I really enjoyed my visit to Birdie's and would definitely consider coming back. The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing, and the ambiance hit that sweet spot between relaxed and thoughtfully designed - it feels like somewhere you could linger over a long dinner with friends. I also really appreciated the quality of the ingredients; you can tell they care about what they're sourcing and putting on the plate. That said, the fixed menu we had this time just didn't quite blow my mind in terms of flavor. It was good, just not "I'm-still-thinking-about-this-next-week" good. I'm giving Birdie's 4 stars because so much of the experience was genuinely lovely, and I can easily see myself loving it more on a different night with a different set of dishes. On my recent trip to Austin I was able to snag a reservation at Birdie's thanks again to my Chase Sapphire Reserve card and OpenTable's Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables. Birdie's offers a frequently changing prix-fixe menu of exceptional food at a great value. The restaurant is mostly counter service with a few full service tables with two sittings per night. Our waitress Tera took great care of us and every course that came out was simply perfect. Fresh, scratch made, balanced, and just really beautiful bites. The menu that night was Northern Italy inspired and each course was better than the next. We started with a few shareable plates: gnocco fritto with 24-month Prosciutto di Parma, smoked cauliflower with brown butter and pistachio salsa verde, cabbage and gala apple soup with chives, and egg pappardelle with duck ragù. For our main course we both each had the braised wagyu short rib with polenta and turnip greens. We also added an order of Birdie's focaccia with anchovy bagna cauda, which was worth the extra carbs. There were two dessert options and both sounded too good to choose, so we shared both. The hazelnut soft serve with chocolate magic shell and hazelnuts, and the semolina custard with salted caramel and roasted strawberries were perfectly balanced and a great finish to the meal. On a weekend trip to Austin my wife and I decided to try out Birdie's to see what the whole hubub was about. It turned out whatever recognition Birdie's got was well deserved. One of the most outstanding meals we've had in a while. Now, will preface this by saying we got to the restaurant before it opened on a Friday night and were the 4th party seated. I can see how the ordering upon entry could become frustrating if you were waiting in a long line, but just solve that problem by getting there early. It would also help the line if customers did a little research before hand and were ready to order when they got to the hostess stand. I give Birdie's credit, they give you whatever attention you need when you are ordering because a couple of the parties before us took what seemed like a very long time to order. How does that happen with a Prix Fixe menu. Not exactly sure, but it took my wife and I less than 2 minutes to place our order and find a seat. We decided to sit at the kitchen counter to get a view of all that was happening in the preparation of the meal. And that is the seat you should strive for if you are interested in that sort of thing. From they guy roasting the sweet potatoes for a sweet potato, pear and apple salad to the pasta girl tossing pasta in the pan like a magician. Amazing to watch. Chef Tracy was right in the middle of the action tasting almost every dish to make sure it was just right. She also did a great job of interacting with customers including us when she got a chance. Really good customer service. Her husband Arjav runs the front of the house and was awesome at discussing the wines as well as offering a replacement glass for a glass of wine that had a little more sediment in it than I wanted. Basically top notch service. For the food, it was definitely outstanding. The menu was a fall focused menu, and I remarked to Arjav that a couple of the dishes that were excellent I would never have ordered off of a traditional a la carte menu. I've never ordered a sweet potato dish in my life, and this Sweet Potato, roasted pears and apple salad was to die for. So good, and not cloyingly sweet like I thought it might be. I wouldn't have ordered the Butternut Squash soup, but again, very good dish with lots of flavor. The Pappardelle with white pork ragu was fantastic, and like I said earlier, watching the cook toss it was like being at a Cirque Du Soleil event. Magical. Both the Smoked Trout and Chargrilled Wagyu were also excellent. For dessert we enjoyed the pumpkin soft serve more than the Apple cake that we found a little dry. We were also stuffed by that point of the meal. Great Job Chef Tracy and the Birdie's team. Quite the show and the food was fantastic. I have eaten at Birdie's a number of times over the years and it is consistently very good! The most recent time was for Aiello's Italian night. We made a reservation ahead for a celebration. At $79 pp, one gets a 7 course meal with the possibility of additional items and/or drinks. One can reserve ahead or wait in line and order at the counter (I recommend a rese). There were also many children/families there the night we went. They also gave us a complementary 1/2 glass of champagne for our celebration and continued to ask if we wanted more or other drinks. Each of the servers presented and described each dish with detail. Simple and classic dishes- nothing too fancy or expensive in ingredients but certainly cooked perfectly! The course menu began with olives, then, essentially a breadstick with prosciutto. Next course was pasta e fagioli (bean soup) followed by a choice of salad (we had caesar). The highlight was the homemade pasta with vodka sauce (excellent flavor) and for the table were Nonna's meatballs (a tad sweet) cooked perfectly. The meal ended with a choice of tiramisu or a hot fudge sundae- we shared each. The add ons included mozz sticks, garlic bread or chicken parm (none were necessary)- we added the mozz sticks and it was too much food for us. The service staff was overly attentive and very nice. My fiancé and I have been meaning to check out Birdie's for over a year, but we were always hesitant because of the long lines. This weekend, with his parents in town, we finally made it happen -- and we're so glad we did! We arrived about 15 minutes before they opened at 5pm on a Friday and found about six parties already ahead of us in line. Thankfully, they had big picnic umbrellas set up outside to provide some much-needed shade while we waited. Parking can be tight (their lot only has a few spots, and they were already taken) but we found easy, free street parking in the neighborhood. Once they opened the doors, they started letting people in gradually. You order at the counter before being seated, and because the menu is prix fixe, it's a streamlined process, mostly just choosing between meat or fish. They take their time with orders to help the kitchen keep pace, but we were able to grab drinks while we waited, which made the process relaxed and pleasant. We were seated in the outdoor dining area about 20 minutes after they opened. While we were initially worried about being outside in the Texas heat, the space is well-designed: fully enclosed, with huge industrial fans and standing AC units that kept it cool and breezy. It was super comfortable and we had no complaints at all being sat there! The staff here really impressed us. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, and even the service manager stopped by a couple of times to check in. He even brought by some sparkling wine on the house to celebrate our recent engagement, which was such a nice touch! The whole team clearly cares about the guest experience, and it shows. As for the food -- it was excellent. Every course was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. All in all, Birdie's lived up to the hype. It's casual but elevated, approachable yet special. I was hoping for so much more from what I was told from my friends and family. Don't get me wrong the multi-course meal was very good and the quality of the meal was great, however the ambience was awful. There were no reservations available inside with a/c for the five or six tables and a few bar stools so we were led to an outside plastic covered tent area and seated on a metal picnic table shared with another unknown couple. The food is OK. My favorite is sweet potato. They are good at vegetable dishes. The main problem is first come first serve. And it's even Michelin guide restaurant. It's very silly to wait outside in cold winter and hot summer outside. There are a lot of mosquitoes outside. For many bites. Maybe they want to create a scene to have a long line waiting outside. It's not a nightclub, not necessary to make a scene. It will never become a fancy restaurant without reservation service. I saw more and more people left while waiting. People hate waiting. This neighborhood spot deserves the accolades. I really love their service style - upscale counter-service with fine-dining tableside assistance for drink ordering. The shared plates work well for diners that share tastes. The host immediately recommended we each get one of the mains so we could try both, which we did. We thought the pasta and soup were slightly oversalted, but the divine butternut squash soup with brown butter and sage made up for it. Every dish balanced very well and I appreciated that they allowed us to enjoy the meal for longer than many Austin restaurants let you linger. Birdie's doesn't take reservations and it's a small place and you have to line up to get in. I suggest arriving as early as possible which is what we did. We were fourth in line, yay! The menu varies & they often have themed menus. When we went we had pasta and salad with wine and cheese board apps. I thought everything was pretty good but it just didn't live up to the hype. I am not saying it was bad AT ALL. But, I was really expecting to be blown away by the food. I think the service was just fine as well. This experience was a bit confusing. Went there with friends on a weekday dinner when I visited Austin and was told that this is a Michelin restaurant. We were nicely greeted by the front desk who introduced the menu to us. With 100+ pp pricing level, I was expecting a fine dining experience. The game rule here is that customers need to stand by the frond desk, make the order, pay everything, get a table sign, go around and find somewhere to sit and place the sign on the table, wait for server to come with drink and food. I did not really agree with the fact that we had to pay tips before receiving any service. The food was marketed as seasonal menu and the ingredients were sourced carefully and locally. They were not bad, but not impressive either. The sauce in salad and pasta were nicely balanced and creative, but the rest of the food were just okay. Again, given the pricing, I would expect more. The wine list was very comprehensive. It would be great if they offer wine pairing to supplement the pre-fixe menu. read more

We decided to come here for dinner because it is a short walk from my friend's place in Austin. When we arrived around 7:45 last night, there were only a few people in line. We did have to wait for about 15-20 minutes to order. Each group took a while to order. You order drinks and your full meal at the counter, so if you want to sample any wines, talk through the menu, etc., it can take a while. Not sure if I really like this system, but that's how it is. The person at the counter recommended we order 6 dishes for three people. We weren't super hungry, so we ordered five dishes and some glasses of wine. We ordered French bread with Jasper Hill Willoughby cheese, a strawberry fennel salad, casarecce with heirloom tomatoes, rockfish with a creamy mushroom and leek sauce, and an olive oil cake. Prices range from $12-$36. I believe the menu changes frequently. The bread and cheese came out first and was pretty disappointing . The portion was tiny and I thought the texture of the bread was tough. The dinner went uphill from there. The salad was tasty, the pasta dish was lovely, the sea bass entree was fantastic, and the olive oil cake was good too. I would order any pasta on the menu again, as well as the fish. Overall, it was a nice meal. The patio has a relaxed and romantic feel. We spent about $85 per person, which included tax, tip, and a couple glasses of wine each. Birdie's is a nice, relaxed restaurant for an upscale dinner with friends or a date night. I would come here again if I'm back in Austin! read more

Considering the hype, I thought the experience would be better. They don't take reservations so you have to wait in a huge line to order at the counter. Parking was also a nightmare because of how packed it was. The wait in the line was surprisingly short and because we had a person using a walker in our party, they found us seats right away. Wow! The food was so good. I brought a couple of friends here the next night! The ingredients tasted fresh, their red sauces were perfectly made, you could tell that they put some time and effort into ingredient selection. We enjoyed their Fagioli, Cesar salad, penne (I think it was actually a different penne-like pasta but not actually penne )à la, vodka, meatballs, and chicken marsala. The service was fantastic and delivered with a smile, we were constantly checked on and attended to. I love that they don't try to do any of the crazy hoity-toity stuff, they simply serve great food with a smile, and they are super appreciative when they see you enjoy enjoying it. We arrived on a Saturday night prepared to wait given they don't take reservations. While standing in line they let you order drinks to pass time. We arrived at 6:15 and ordered at 6:50. Our first dish promptly came out at 7. Overall, I would say the flavors were very creative and unique. It reminded me of odd duck's menu. We cleared all of our plates! However, I will say I wasn't a fan of some of the flavors due to personal preference, specifically the salad and deviled eggs. The pasta was cooked perfectly but I had a hard time enjoying with the field peas that were the texture of beans. The one dish I really enjoyed and wish I had more of was the chilled potato and leek soup! We paid $88 (with tip) for 2 people splitting 2 small plates and 2 entrees (I think the soup was an entree) I can't remember. We also didn't order drinks or dessert. Decided to try this restaurant on a recommendation from our friends. As I read the other reviews, the pros and cons seem to align well with mine: PROS - the food was yummy. We had the steak and fish dish which were both cooked to perfection. The fish dish especially was delicious. We also tried the deviled eggs which were super standard and underwhelming. - the service was really good for us. CONS - the 45 mins wait in line on a random weekday, ordering at the counter and then again, waiting at your table. Be ready to dedicate time. - the prices are high for what you get. The soft serve once fees and tip was added was $17. - the music was so loud we could barely talk, making the already unimpressive ambiance worse. Would I go back? Maybe. I have been meaning to visit Birdie's for years and finally took the plunge on a late Thursday evening. The only disappointing aspect of our visit to Birdie's was that I had not tried it out sooner! Who knew someone could make carrots so tasty, but the roasted carrots with ramp and pine nut pesto at Birdies could have been a main course on their own. The spaghetti with crème fraîche, sun gold tomatoes, Parmesan, and basil, and the minute steak with smoked cabbage and a sauce of beef and red wine were perfectly cooked and rounded out our meal nicely. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and homemade. I always love when restaurants have you order at a counter and then pick where you want to sit. It is refreshing to see this seating style at an upscale restaurant such as Birdie's. Since their menu changes often, I can't wait to see what else they have in store for us this summer. read more

Birdies is hands down my favorite restaurant in Austin. I feel so lucky to have this absolute gem in my home city. With impeccable service, beautiful but cozy and causal ambience, and out of this world food, Birdie's has never failed to amaze me. It's a good sign when many of your "best I've ever had" dishes have been enjoyed at one restaurant! This visit we had the pleasure of experiencing their Italian pop up called Aello's that I believe Birdie's puts on once a year. Everything was outstanding. Went here for an anniversary dinner after regularly hearing raving reviews and I gotta say it was extremely disappointing. Every course but one on the prix fixe menu was bland, or not cooked well which I'd expect much higher quality when spending hundreds of dollars for one meal. I opted for the steak which was tiny but looked like it'd be solid. Quickly realized it was chewy and tough, it didn't seem like the quality of the meat was very high at all. Definitely not for vegans / vegetarians. We ordered vegetarian for three. Unfortunately we cannot recommend this place one bit. Food portions were too small, spread over 90 minute period and just didn't hit the spot. We got very hungry between the dishes as they were such small portions. Unfortunately, all three of us are sick - up late at night - throwing up. We think the culprit is the pasta we ordered for our kid as that's the only dish we all ate. While the food poisoning may be one off, this place is definitely not for vegetarians. The pasta was very bland, and the Lima beans dish was truly unremarkable. The butternut squash soup and the sweet potato dish were the only thing that tasted good, though the portion was extremely small, and not what I would have expected at this price level. At $100 a person ( not including alcohol), this was a learning experience for us to read the other reviews more carefully. Don't make the same mistake. read more

We really enjoyed the space. We waited outside about 40 minutes but were able order drinks while we waited and there were heaters. The food was okay. It was definitely a classic home cooked meal vibe. We ordered a bit of everything. The beef stew was the winner of the bunch, it was a bit cold by the time we got it but still good. The pasta dish was just okay, probably won't get it again. The salad was delicious, my favorite of the night. We also ordered both desserts and the beef tar tar. All of them were pretty basic but good. Their wine list is really extensive. They have no cocktails and limited other drink selection so that was a bummer. Overall I would rate my experience a 3/3.5. I have been here in the past, but this was the first time trying the prix fixe menu. Definitely recommend getting to Birdie's right when it opens as you will have to wait in line a bit to order at the counter. Getting there at 5PM, we were able to order by 5:30PM on a Thursday. One thing I do really appreciate is that even though it is a prix fixe menu, they are able to easily accommodate you if you are gluten free and not everyone in the party has to have that dish gluten free. Highlights from the Aiello's menu were the garlic bread, caesar salad, and Maccheroni ala Vodka. We sat on the outdoor patio and there were tons of fans which is helpful for the Texas heat. Initially, the service was good and the plates came out in a timely fashion. However, our table was abandoned when it came time for dessert and we waited 30 minutes after the last course before we had to physically get up and find someone to ask them what was taking so long. We waved our hands several times and no one came to our table. Since it had already been about a 90 min experience, we were thrown off on the delay and lack of attention to our table. I would have expected the dessert to be on the house at that point, but since you pre-pay for a prix fixe menu, maybe that is not an option. Overall, it was a 3 hour experience so please take that into consideration when planning to go here. I am not sure if or when I will go here again. However, Birdie's has a great wine list and I am hopeful they will one day open a wine bar so that I can try the wine without the $200+ dinner as there are better options in Austin at that price point. read more

Then were seated in what was effectively a wind tunnel with no less than 12 industrial fans blowing about, in what would otherwise be a very nice mild temp night. Had to ask three times for them to finally fix the issue fully. We were served a fixed menu (Italian pop up) which comprised a sad half bowl of chick pea soup, an equally sad and small bowl of salad, a pasta dish that my partner and I had to share, and a decent piece of fish. Overall the ambiance was bad especially with the wind and the dishes were small and bland. Overall we paid $340 which included 4 glasses of wine total. We waited for about 30 mins before we got seated. You will be directed to place your order and pay before being seated. The day's menu will be taped to the door so while you stand and wait you can decide what you want. The menu changes and does not stay the same. Birdie's make the dishes based on seasonal produce. The portions for small and large are smaller so you might want to order a few dishes if you don't want to be hungry. Prices are higher for dishes. Their drink menu is extensive with many options. They even have mocktails. There were limited inside seating but the outdoor seating wasn't too bad because it's semi enclosed and has fans blowing. Service was good. We ordered the beef tartare, rock fish, pesto finger potatoes, minion steak with black eye peas, deviled eggs, olive oil cake, and corn soft serve corn ice cream. Beef tartare was not the best I had. Very little beef and a lot of mixed mixture such as couscous pecans and stuff. Served with a cracker that was crispy. Seasoned well. For the price I was expecting more beef. Devil eggs were 2 eggs split into 4 pieces. Amazing Devil eggs and well balanced. Love the lemon zest on it. Creamy and perfect cookery of the eggs. Minion Steak - large (for sharing) .... Is not really for sharing. It's a 1 person entree. My husband and I were still hungry... steak was chewy and we didn't think anything special with this one. Pesto finger potatoes--- my lawwwd I didn't know potatoes with pesto is a thing! My new favorite and that pesto was fresh vibrant and so good! The pesto wasn't oily and complimented the potatoes perfectly. The potatoes were refreshing and didn't feel heavy to eat! One of the best thing ever! So creative! Highly recommended Our friends got pasta and it was delicious! Highly recommended Olive oil cake was good. Light fluffy and light on the sweet. Blueberry component is delicious. Overall the service was friendly, the interior is chic (although too small to expect to sit in) and the back patio is covered with fans and quite pleasant. The food was very tasty. The reason I don't think this is a 5 star place is there was a long wait to get in, and for how much it's hyped up and how long you have to wait outside in the sun only to be left with outdoor tables the food's not THAT amazing. We got there right as they opened and waited for probably 45min before placing an order. Birdie's had been on my list for quite some time - but I am not sure it lived up to my expectations. Counter service is confusing as it is otherwise a relatively nice restaurant and atmosphere, but you have to wait for 30 minutes to order before sitting down (this is not an indication of how many people were in line, just that it is not fast at all). Food and drinks are very pricey - for just myself it was well over $50 for just a main and a drink - my friend spent over $90. We split the turnips, I ordered the halibut. The turnips were surprisingly small and not all that tasty. The halibut was alright, but not creatively flavored or anything that was memorable. Maybe will have to come back and just stick to the small plates in the future. read more

Absolutely the best restaurant in ATX. We love every dish we've had here and most especially the pasta! We try to recreate it at home often. This place is also like a restaurant straight out of a romcom. It's so charming and romantic, but also has the best family friendly vibe as well. It's perfect for a random night out and also a special occasion. I hope they are here forever and ever! read more

I loved the food but didn't necessarily love the wait outside and counter service. The hostess, person who helped us order was lovely and had a great personality. We waited for about 30-40 minutes and nobody came out to take any drink orders. :( The inside of the place is cute and I would love to come back and sit at the bar area and watch the kitchen. The food was excellent. I loved the timing of which the food came out. It was perfectly paced. The tables in the back are spaced out. You could sit with other people at a picnic type table (no thanks) or grab a tiny table. There were three of us so they put two "two" tips together for us. The tables were a bit unstable and didn't really fit together. It was a bit awkward. We each got a glass of wine and with tip we each spent around 75! That's a bit pricey for counter service and odd seating. read more

Interesting place to say the least. Service was probably a 2/5. Outdoor patio 1/5. Tables small, loud not the vibe music blasting, and swap fans blowing everything around. Beef tartare was filled with more filler food than actual meat. Main dishes came out 15minutes apart, so everyone ate separate. read more

THE BIG: Friendly neighborhood restaurant. 1st come first serve, no reservations. Order at the front and order more sitting down. THE BLACK AND WHITE: The fiance and I came here for a date night. We heard birdie's was a neo-american restaurant and had a great wine selection. Caution: there is a line, since it is first come first serve and order at the front before sitting down. The front receptionist said around 4-5 items will satisfy a party of 2. We had another event to go to so we didn't want to be stuffed. We ended up ordering the minute steak and the bolognese. Both were cooked very nicely (al dente and medium rare). However the price point was steep for the portions and quite frankly the ambiance. I don't like the option of tipping at the beginning when we didn't even receive service yet. It felt like an obligation rather than merit. Sitting down, you had the option of inside or outside (outside has more seating). Birdie's winterproofed the outdoor patio so don't fret to come here during the wintertime. THE FINAL BAMBOO: Overall the damage done for 2 dishes (1 large, 1 medium) was $67 excluding tip. The food was good but not the exorbitant prices. read more
