Excellent mussels, French onion soup, cheese and salads. Hamburger and chicken cooked properly. Burger had Grey Poupon and cornichons. All servings generous and well seasoned. I chose the Charles Debourges Sancerre which was crisp and delicate. Lately, ratatouille has been my go to entree if appears on any menu. I was told by the staff that Hopfield's has the best fries in Austin so I ordered a side. The ratatouille looked like it came straight out of a Pixar film. Such a gorgeous presentation with plenty of tomato purée that was great for dipping fries into. I couldn't leave without dessert and a nightcap. Such a cute and eclectic spot! When you first walk in there's a bar and lots of benched tavles but as you move through the back of the restaurant there are alcoves with tables that feel more private. The food was great and the portions are huge! I couldn't finish the Moules Frites which is a shame because they are SO GOOD! It's been many years since I last visited Hopfields, but we're making a point to revisit some Austin classics, and this brasserie definitely fits the bill. We came for a pre-theater Sunday brunch and had a great experience. The ladies loved the Carajillo--an espresso-style cocktail that made for a delightful brunch refreshment. Everyone enjoyed their orders--I had a zingy pascal burger, croissant sandwich, French onion soup, and French toast, all of which hit the spot. Service from Clinton was stellar--prompt and friendly. We also appreciated the old-school charm of the dining area, which felt like a series of little rooms. Don't be fooled by the bar look when you first walk in--the cozy dining spaces inside are super cute. There's a small parking lot around the corner, but we opted for a rideshare to make things easier. We'll definitely be back to check out their happy hour deals. The food: fresh and comforting French favorites. Everything is fresh and filling. I have had mostly sandwiches and salads so far. The vibe: a hodgepodge hole in the wall that has a homey, cozy feel. There are many "rooms" to choose from that make it feel like you are tucked away and able to have an intimate meal with your group. Service: staff are nice and prompt with getting food out. I apologize to Hopfields for not leaving a review sooner because I have eaten here so many times and never had anything less than a superlative experience. Generally, I end up here fairly late, because few places are open past 11 and still serving their full amazing menu. On our last visit, it was the salad Nicoise to begin, which is the best salad in town, fight me. The deviled eggs with white anchovies are an incredible and potent touch. The hanger steak frites followed, perfect in a Diane sauce (that could be a touch thicker if we are picking nits), and the chocolate pot de creme took us home in delightful fashion. It's fun that a Gastropub is the best French restaurant in town. Terrific wine list and their shift to having a full bar a few years ago was very welcome. Cute and cozy vibe if you get seated in the little nooks. Service was friendly and helpful. We ordered several apps - oysters, beef tartar, duck wings, escargot dumplings and ended with crème brûlée. I enjoyed the food overall and think it was prepared nicely. I liked the steak tartare it had chunky pieces of beef and liked the differed capers. I wasn't a big fan of the escargot dumplings - I do like escargot and dumplings separately but was kind of meh about the fusion due to the meaty escargot/texture perhaps. Others might enjoy though! Duck wings came with a nice sauce and had a nice fry to them. The crème brûlée was amazing, it's my favorite dessert in general, and they did a wonderful job on the sugar crust and crème texture. read more

Great Belgian spot that blends the aesthetics of a dive bar with upscale food and drink options. Food options are good. The burger is great, and the nicer options like the braised chicken and mussels are also good. The appetizers are particularly interesting, with the caprese being a standout. Service is okay, but they charge a mandatory 20% gratuity for large groups. This is acceptable in principle, but since you order at the bar it's a bit unreasonable. For large groups, they should send someone to collect the orders, since they are charging a full-service gratuity anyway, My main complaint is their beer menu. It's extensive, but their margins are too high. For example, a pint of Live Oak (which comes from Austin) goes for about $9 on their menu, while the street price is $2. If you look at more obscure options, like Belgian trappist ales, the markup is even higher. While I understand that large markups are needed to keep the business afloat, my sense is that these are a bit excessive. read more

Update: Food has always been so good here, I was excited today to order the Croque Madame on the breakfast menu. I didn't actually expect it to live up to the one I had in Paris--a world historic sandwich with thick slices of grilled french bread, silky Mornay sauce, and Jamon de Paris, with a perfect sunny egg on top. But I hoped it would at least be as good as what I've had at La Madeleine... I was stunned when they presented me with a skimpy piece of toast. The ham on top was quite good, as was the cheese sauce and the egg. But it was a friggin' piece of toast. Or a "Tartine," if you want to get all French about it. But it was NOT a glorious, or even a substantial, sandwich--and it came with some greens--for $18! Not on my birthday! They were nice about taking it away and replacing it with an excellent Eggs Benedict. But the chef needs to get his cookbook out and make a real Croque Madame--or charge a lot less for that piece of toast. read more

Looked promising but came up short. Atmosphere was fine but a bit noisy in the back room. Service started out well. But the food was the most disappointing. Here's why: Had the burger. Seasoned and cooked well, until the second half, which was bathed in salt. Difficult to finish. The mussels with "frites" - fries - was more of a challenge. First up, there are easily 100 fries on top of mussels with a broth way down at bottom. The fries were coated in a garlic type aioli. The mussels themselves had 2-3X more garlic than needed - had to be multiple cloves, some with 1/2 a clove of slices in one mussel. So much so that some indigestion later. Dunking the mussel in the broth helped but navigating the ridiculous pile of fries to get there was a challenge. Here's where the service comes in. Once the food was served, neither our server nor the hostess ever asked how the food was. Disappointing. read more

We go to Hopfields regularly for brunch and it is consistently a great experience. It is not loud or overcrowded like many brunch places, and the food is always good. The eggs benedict in particular are amazing (my daughter orders eggs benedict everywhere she can and this is her favorite by far), and they are served with a delicious side salad with a mustard vinaigrette. I ordered the pascal burger with a side salad, and my boyfriend ordered the French Italian sandwich with fries. Pascal burger -- Very mediocre. I had asked for medium-rare and got a very well-done burger. The flavor was okay, but the burger was very dry. French Italian -- The sandwich itself was extremely dry with maybe 2 slices of thin deli meat on it. The fries were fantastic and the only redeeming quality. Great for a date, a family gathering, or a casual friends get together. For lunch, you order and pay at the bar, and then wait for your food and take it to a table of your choice. For dinner, a waiter serves you, providing a complete dinning experience. Staff are friendly and accommodating. Loooved the pascal burger $16. It hit the spot the first time I tried it. When warm, the soft Camembert cheese melts into the cornichons, caramelized onions, and grain mustard, creating a perfect medley with the juicy patty. The meat was flavorful and well-seasoned, bursting with flavor. Definitely, one of the best burgers I've ever tried. Try this. Eat it while it's hot. When it cools down, it looses its ooomph. When I ordered this during my second visit, I waited until it was cool, and I did not get the same kick out of it. Fries were perfect--well seasoned, crispy, and delicious. Duck confit with polenta $27 was a small portion, but every element was executed perfectly. The duck was delicate and bursting with flavor, thanks to the bright, citrusy orange sauce. I really love the casual but slightly upscale vibe to this restaurant and pub. I've been in for coffee, brunch, drinks and a late night bite when nothing else great is open in the neighborhood. The food is French and pub fare, all of it quite delicious. I highly recommend the French onion soup, the cheese plate and pretty much everything on the brunch menu. You often have to order at the bar, and the servers are not super attentive, but it is not terrible. The eclectic decor is quite unique, and each room has a different feel. You can choose to sit in the more crowded bar area or have a quieter place in one of the lovely rooms behind it. We were a party of 4 and ordered the following: -- moules frites - lots of mussels, lots of fries and a really flavorful and slightly (to us) spicy sauce; the only thing missing was baguette, and though we were offered it, we had to ask for it twice more (our server was new/being trained) and it didn't arrive til we were almost finished with the meal --burger and fries - this was an 'elevated' burger with great, tasty high quality meat, an aioli sauce on the side, brie cheese and a generous heap of fries - my nephew devoured it (thus no photo) --duck 2 ways - this was a special with a roasted duck breast (cooked perfectly) and a confit duck leg (also perfect), served with a side of watercress and roasted rainbow fingerling potatoes - the whole dish was well prepared, flavorful and pretty - and for a single person, a big portion! --mushroom leek tart with side salad and a fried egg on top - this was also very good with a nice crispy pastry on the tart, a nicely dressed salad and a touch of truffle oil Service overall was good with folks checking on us and replenishing drinks often. At our son's suggestion we made a reservation for dinner through Open Table. We arrived on time, were seated, and ordered wine and, shortly thereafter, dinner, but it never arrived. After 30 minutes, we were informed the kitchen was backed up, and dinner would arrive shortly. It did not. We gave up, received perfunctory apologies, paid for our wine, and left. To add insult to injury, Open Table emailed us asking why we hadn't honored our reservation. We had. We were there; the food we'd come for was not. We came for the charcuterie board, but instead got the APÉRITIF DÎNATOIR at the advice of our friendly and knowledgeable bartender. She steered us in the right direction. The board came quickly, and we dug in. The chicken liver mousse was creamy goodness, and the star of the show for me. But every morsel brought something special. From the deliciously funky soft cheese (forgot the name), to the sweet little section of honeycomb that helped reset our taste buds. The red pepper confiture was making friends with everyone on the board. And the pickled watermelon radish was a tasty little treat we couldn't quite place (jicama?) until we asked.
