Came here Sunday night to try the $7 fish and chips deal. I'm a sucker for cheap and good fish and chips so I was excited. This was my first time coming here even though I live just down the street. It was a pretty cute and cozy bar with a homey vibe. Would be a great place for a date or to unwind after work. All the workers were super nice and chill too. On to the food. It was fine. Not that spectacular or anything. The fries were pretty salty and over-seasoned but the fish was good and fried well despite there only being one piece. I'm not docking too many points though because it was only $7. I'd say it's worth the $7 but the next time I come here, it would probably just be for a date and their drinks.

I had my birthday meal at this location and not gonna lie .. it confused me a bit because they share a lot with a Mexican cuisine restaurant so I went in there thinking it was House Pub haha The service was nice and the vibe did give sport bar with a hint of classical music I didn't like that I had to put a tab on just to sit down but whatever! My friends were an hour late so that meant I had to as well put more down on my card because the food wouldn't be ready by the time they got there and I didn't NOT want to wait any longer than I had already. I had the special for their steak night and it was pretty good!

I dig it here. I had been a few times prior and never disappointed. It's a funky and eclectic schoolhouse atmosphere with great drinks and food. People are super friendly (patrons and employees). Indoor and outdoor seating available. The food is slightly elevated bar fare and it's really tasty. Quality and quantity.

This was our second stop of the night and we enjoyed some drinks with friends at schoolhouse. The bartender kindly split our drink into two glasses as we were having an early night in after a long day without judgement. TVs playing the UT game / other sec games was a nice touch as well. Be warned if you're out on game night you will experience a lot of traffic on this road.

Austin has a good place to get a sizable portion of fish and chips! The menu here is varied enough for everyone and the fact it is in an actual old schoolhouse makes this place pretty cool. I usually sit at the bar and the beer list is well appointed with many styles of brew. The staff is quick yet friendly making you feel like a regular even if you are not! I can't comment on the service beyond being quick - I never ask where my food or drink is here as they seem on top of it all. So stop in to the schoolhouse on manor for dinner and hit up their happy hour if you can!

its a really cool theme but their happy hour fish and chips were incredible lackluster the drinks are good but nothing special i also don't trust any place that doesnt give you an itemized bill bc omg its expensive for what youre getting

I came in for HH with a friend and enjoyed their $7 fish and chips and $6 Deep Eddy limeade. The fish didn't seem to have salt but it was good with vinegar and the chips were really tasty particularly in the ranch dip which seemed house made. The limeade was really cute in a tin cup though I didn't feel any alcohol in it tbh. The vibe is a bit dive bar and I honestly expected more of a school house theme but it's pretty laid back. The staff was pretty friendly though the food menu seems a bit pricy and I'm not sure if I'd pay that much for those offerings.

Came here for a UT football game, loved the vibe, really felt like a classic pub. Pretty chill, not like a typical sports bar, so it wasn't overcrowded. I was catching up with a friend here so we ordered some food and a few drinks. The bartenders were very friendly and accommodating and the old man that sat next to us at the bar had the energy of a English Football fan - cursing and cheering after every play. The food here was solid: Fish and Chips - two large beer battered fish over a bed of fries. This plate was pretty massive and my only qualm was that the batter to fish ratio was a bit too high, especially at the edges (but still plenty of fish). Spicy Ginger Wings - the chicken wings themselves were good quality, nice and juicy, but the sauce was just too salty. I was able to finish but could've done with half the amount of salt for better wings. I think this a great spot if you're not looking for typical frat energy on sports days, and prefer something a little more intimate.

Shrimp sliders, not worth $18. Muted flavors Fries with the cod and the fries with the sliders two separate batches. Dropped by this East side jewel with some friends for lunch and had a wonderful time. The bartender recommended some great drinks; we had the Wassail drink and it was delicious. Best dishes of the day were the Mac n cheese and the chicken fried chicken. The Mac had cheddar and Parmesan and perfectly crisped pancetta. And the portion for the chicken fried chicken was substantial! (See attached photo). Definitely coming back for the fish n chips. There was a small issue with one of our dishes but the staff and manager handled it wonderfully. Great atmosphere, decent dishes (I'd skip the shrimp sliders tbh as the flavors were a bit muted.) One of my fav places to hang out with a few friends.

Well, I was in the mood for poutine so on today's walk I didn't know where I would end up. I saw School House Pub might have some so I ventured inside. Don't worry, it's coming back next week! I was met by the chillest bartender Mauricio & he even gave me a slight "don't worry, it looks like you're flustered" talk as I approached the bar. He told me the fish and chips as well as the Crawford Bock were on happy hour. Of course I had to have both. I was also in the mood for cauliflower wings and I hit it big here! The food was incredible despite the French fries being overdone. The vegan ranch was delicious and the tartar sauce was unique but not in left-field. The conversation I had with Mauricio was great--it was nice to exchange similar opinions on how East Austin's restaurant scene has changed. He poured me some of his favorite mezcal over ice and it was delicious. The atmosphere was great and super laid back. It was cool to see some Día de los Muertos decor and people from Britain in the pub. I can't wait to go back!

Has new hours on their website showing Saturday 11am- 1am, showed up on 8/24/2024 and place is completely closed, no note on the door or explanation. Walked across the street and enjoyed a great lunch and drinks at Haymaker, which we will go back to again instead!

    Mean Girls cocktail
    Jessica M.

Came here for cocktails and a bite before an event at Moody Center. I tried the Mean Girls and the Hall Pass cocktails. My favorite was the Means Girls (their take on an espresso martini). I ordered the gyro and the mac n cheese. The gyro had great flavor and came with thick onion rings on the side. I definitely recommend trying this! The Mac n cheese was good but not amazing. I will say I'm a tough critic when it comes to Mac n cheese though. Based on other reviews, most people really like it! You order at the bar counter and your food is brought to your table. The staff were kind and welcoming, and we didn't wait long for our food. The vibe is dive bar meets school house, which was fun to experience. There are tables inside and outside as well as a few parking spots (which is rare for this area of town). Street parking is available in the nearby neighborhood.

Regardless of the food or ambiance the server is the face of the establishment. Bad service can easily lead to a bad review. In this case the waitress, when she finally showed up, was not friendly. She was indifferent, like we were bothering her, and had a borderline RUDE attitude. The clincher was her assumption on who was paying the bill. We waited a good ten minutes for her to initially show up. When she got to the table the first thing she asked for was a credit card to cover the drinks we ordered; which I thought was strange since our family was sitting at a table and ordering dinner. After the food was delivered she never returned to check on us. Other servers had to get us refills and were happy to do so. When she finally returned at the end of the meal with the bill , all smiles of course, she had already run the credit card without ever giving us the bill to review??? The card she asked for, for the drinks, was NOT meant to pay the bill. We were going to split the bill but since she already ran the card the cardholder didn't feel comfortable asking her to rerun the card. This was VERY awkward!! "Nosh & Bevvy Won't Forgive Me for All the Ways They Wronged Me"…read more That title is meant to be ironic. After more than fifteen years as a customer, I made one mistake: a four-dollar tab discrepancy on a day when I had just been turned away from a dental appointment because my blood pressure was too high for treatment. I was upset, distracted, and wanted to be around people I believed were my friends. That was the last day I ever stayed there as a customer. Let's go down the list. I have been accused of skipping out on my tab. The truth is that after fifteen years of faithful patronage, there was one incident involving approximately four dollars. I had added items to my order, paid cash, and made a mistake. One mistake in fifteen years. After that happened, I became concerned that I would continue to be treated as though I couldn't be trusted. In my experience, comments about unpaid tabs continued to surface. Rather than create another misunderstanding, I made a point of being generous. On the very next occasion I tipped Charlie more than fifty percent. Instead of feeling appreciated, I arrived the next time feeling insulted when the entire amount was simply pocketed without so much as an acknowledgment. Maybe others see that differently. That's how it felt to me. The situation became even more disturbing when interactions began taking place outside the bar itself. While standing in front of my own home, I experienced conduct that I considered harassment. As a result, I filed a police report and have the corresponding case number in my email records. What disturbed me even more were stories that reached me through people connected to my former partner. According to what we were told, false rumors were being circulated claiming that my ex-girlfriend had committed suicide. Whether people thought this was gossip, entertainment, or somehow harmless, it was not. The psychological harm caused by spreading something like that is difficult to overstate. Shame on everyone involved. What you don't know is Satara an I  spoke with witnesses that completely implicated Gilbert in the rumor. What strikes me now is that I nearly forgave all of this. I removed earlier reviews because I genuinely wanted to move on. I thought it was over. I thought everyone could move on with their lives. Apparently not. If people insist on dragging the issue back into the light, then here it is. The reality is that I don't even particularly miss the place. What I do object to is being disrespected. When a business chooses to disrespect a customer who supported it for fifteen years, there are consequences. One of those consequences is that customer telling his side of the story publicly. A Message to the Staff: If I believe I am being harassed in public--whether at Night Owl or anywhere else--I will pursue every legal remedy available to me. And Sam, for what it's worth, I am sorry that your employees have represented your business in a way that ultimately cost you a longtime customer and the loss of business from everyone else that read & took this review to heart as a warning & again, Sam & Charlie, for what it's worth I wanted to make all of this go away.  Fifteen years. One four-dollar mistake. And somehow I'm still the one expected to apologize when I feel like my partner and I were the ones most wronged. Because I'm not a completely vindictive man. If I get an apology from every employee that works building that knows me, In writing, I will remove this review. -- Mad Dashiell

A coworker suggested this place for sports watching and atmosphere. Never knew this place existed…read morebut glad we ventured here. Nice pub located in a strip center off Burnet close to 183 area. Convenient. Came for sports and drinks and that's what we got! Bartenders were super friendly especially the woman bartender. Gosh I wish I could remember her name. I wasn't hungry but are party ordered the fried pickles and fish n chips: my husband said they were the best fried pickles he's had in town and would come back for the fish and chips. That says something if he's saying that. You can tell this is a regular hang out spot for people. Good place for casual eats and sports viewing.
