I came here on the whim. It's a gastropub where you order at the register instead of having waiter service. They have cute decor of white chalkboards and schoolhouse accessories. Also a nice outdoor area. I had the burger and gyro with fries. The burger was a bit too sweet with the brioche and the gyro was more arugula than actual meat. The food here is shockingly good and feels pretty inspired. I had the fish and chips and the short rib poutine (don't remember what they called it on the menu). The food was just all really flavorful and beautifully cooked. Important: the fries all seem to get a topping of raw garlic and herbs before they join the rest of the plate so if that bothers you I'd ask for it without. Drinks were delicious and the bartenders were friendly and knowledgeable. Small parking lot in the alley which is a huge plus for me. Downsize for me: it gets real loud in that little schoolhouse. I went here for my 21st birthday and the fried fish was so good I bought TWO plates of it. Oh my gosh the fish was so good. Also, our service was ridiculously fast and our food was steaming and fresh. I also had the hall pass (I think it was called). I had never drank before, and I highly do NOT recommend this drink for new drinkers. It's made with muddled blackberry and gin. It tasted so bad, truthfully but it didn't take away anything from the evening. One big red solved that issue! I will definitely come back here. It was so delicious. This place is perfect for brunch. The first picture is the Japanese pancake, which was full of flavor. It had spicy pork but it was overall mild, not too spicy. The pancake was stuffed with different things that made it interesting. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something fun and flavorful! The second picture is the Benedict which is what I would highly recommend! I personally don't like fish that much but the fried fish on it was actually yummy with the perfect crunch. Visited for happy hour and wasn't smitten with any dish (except the mac 'n cheese). Everything was fine; just nothing that makes me want to return again any time soon. I love the indoor seating with its broody, dark interiors and the plentiful outdoor seating on park benches (hard to get in and out of if you're wearing a skirt/dress!) and when the sunset is that beautiful magenta/hot Texas orange color, this venue is perfectly situated to stare longingly at it. I also like that you order from the counter instead of traditional table service because sometimes it's nice not to be interrupted (make sure you have everything you need before you sit down, though, because if the line is long, it makes it difficult to track someone down for something). Solid neighborhood bar, but i probably wouldn't come if i didnt live near by. The best feature is the patio, Manor road is a cool neighborhood and its fun to people watch. The inside feels a little cramped for a group and it can be pretty loud. The neighborhood in general is nice. If your in the area you should stop by. They also have some good happy hour deals. 6 dollar fish and chips and 5 dollars off bottles of wine. Each day of the week has a different deal and they're all pretty good. In terms of drinks, they have a decent selection of beers on tap. Theyre selection extends beyond the basic austin starter pack too which is nice. In terms of food, Its a step up from bar food, but i definitely wouldn't call this a gastro pub. The fish and chips are good but definitely greasy and the portions are inconsistent. The burger is pretty good. The patty is pretty thick and they put a jam on top thats sweet which stole the show. I think the jam was made of onions. I only wish they put more jam on top. If you are reading this, I sincerely hope that you never go to School House Pub. They treated my wife and me terribly. We got married in April and were supposed to host our Friday welcome drinks here. We reached out to them in September of last year and ended up booking the place in December. We signed a credit card authorization form with all the details. Everything was set for months. Four weeks before the wedding, we reach out to them to them to check in. They told us that in order to proceed with our event, they would have to charge us TWICE the amount that we had agreed upon. We tried to reason with them and find a middle ground to no avail. We had already invited everyone in our wedding to join us at the School House Pub! Three weeks before the wedding they fully canceled on us. Not only was it rude but extremely unprofessional. When were they going to tell us they wanted to charge us double the price?? When we showed up for our event? Fortunately we found a better place to host our drinks very last minute. Needless to say that we will never be returning to the School House Pub and hope that neither do you. read more

If you have any type of claustrophobia then I would think twice before you enter on a busy night. They do offer something like 7 parking places, but good luck getting in and out since it was incredibly cramped. We ended up having a new smudge of white paint on our ride from someone who didn't quite successfully negotiate the lot. They do not offer table side service, but rather an "Order Here" area at the bar, which I would imagine will be a cluster f-bomb, when they are busy. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater, but rather just confused as to what the attraction to a place like this would be. Perhaps this concept is themed after Rainey Street and will be a one stop drink and get out place, since I can't imagine it would be a very comfortable place to hang. We were seated in one the booths along a wall and just getting up to head to the bar meant ass planting my neighbor while trying to squeeze between the tables. There was no subtle way to get around this. If they were busy, I would imagine it would be quite a maneuver to get to the bar to order. They had some crafty drinks on the menu, but I opted for a top shelf rita, which was tasty and Suzie grabbed a tito's and soda. They were mixed with care and delivered from a very pleasant bartendress. They had an interesting menu and what we saw coming out of the kitchen looked good, but cannot comment on the quality. What a great little spot! Stopped in during HH on a Thursday and posted up at the bar. Super friendly bartenders and just a great vibe overall. Went ahead and sampled some beers, grabbed a Dogfish Punkin Ale - they guy even threw some sugar and freshly ground cinnamon on the rim! This is the only way you should be drinking a pumpkin beer! Ordered the fish and chips - $5 bucks on HH! These things came with some serious garlic fries.. I want you to take what you think is a lot of garlic, then multiply it by 83874... Somehow still delicious, the tarter sauce on the side deserves an award.. It was like a tarter/greek tzatziki sauce hybrid! I should have asked for some to-go. No idea why they give you ketchup as well.. Doesn't really fit the plate because of the fry seasonings and garlic. The fish was tender and crispy... perfect balance. I had been meaning to check this place out as it is literally down the street from a friend's apt on Manor and having investigated almost every other place on the block, my FOMO was kicking in when I would see this place packed to the hilt every time we drove by. Luckily, I came on a quiet weekday evening and barely made it for their HH (the bartender was nice enough to honor it since it was but a minute over). I like the vibe here, it is very trendy eastside but w/o the pretension or self-importance of other places nearby. I had my sights set on the Montreal fries as I am a poutine enthusiast (and purist, to be truthful) , so I will establish right now these are not traditional poutine, but a conceptualization. First off, the serving was massive and I probably reached my sodium quota for the week by finishing every last bite, but I'm not a quitter and setting this heap of short ribs, gravy, cheese curds, and fries in front of me was instantly "Challenge: Accepted!". It took me almost an hour and a half whittling away one bite at a time and having to take literal breathers in between, but it was ::MISSION ACCOMPLISHED:: (in the unironic non-Bush sense) and I had 0 regrets. In the 90mins of unleashing my hardcore Fatty for all to see, I got to interact w/the staff and other patrons and I have to say, there were no judgements (aamof, I got several nods and eyebrow raises of approval at my endeavor). I'll admit, everyone I encountered was a very Austin-y version of splendid! We laughed, I cried (when I finally finished the Montreal Fries), and even rebuked the very handsome bartender's insinuation I would even think about a to-go box! All in all, I enjoyed my visit here and can see myself coming back on an off/quiet night. This place is a great casual, laid-back, rustic bar to grab a drink and grub with a group. The only parking available is street parking behind the bar in the neighborhood, but you don't have to walk too far. (Less than 5 min) This bar has a throwback school vibe with chalkboards on the walls and mini composition notebooks for your receipt. They have a good craft beer selection and their food is delicious and higher quality than your average bar food. We ordered the wings and pretzels. They lured me in with their lovely looking outdoor seating area, but it was full so I had to sit the back near the parking lot on an old rickety bench. My partner ordered two beers from the online menu on their site. The guy who took his order was super snarky and rude. The food menu is very small and uninspired. School is in session!! Everything under $10! Holy Opening, Batman! (I just made myself giggle. There has got to be a better way to say that. I just mean the grand opening was last night and a TON of people showed up.) We were lucky enough to arrive around 6:30 and found two seats at the bar. Otherwise both patios (out front and to the side) were busy, and it was standing room only for many folks. Worth the hype! We have been stalking this place ever since Zandunga closed, and then even more closely since we moved to the east side. The theme is ridiculously cute. Without being too cutesy. Well maybe...there is a giant blackboard on the wall (I'll let its message be a surprise for you), the menus are written on index cards, and the flag they give you when you order food is literally a ruler stuck on a chalkboard eraser. I actually expected one of those trough sinks when I walked into the restroom. Alas... I thought my boyfriend was kidding when he said everything was under ten bucks. Nope. Everything: Beer, cocktails and food. Awesome! I got a giant plate of deep fried deviled eggs with chorizo. For $4. You read that correctly. I would have paid twice that, not kidding. They have a bunch of shareable plates like that (although I ate that whole plate myself), and a burger/sandwich menu. They have about 20 beers on tap (lots of local) and about 20 bottles. Oh, and bombers. Whoop!! The cocktails are $7-9 bucks are the most expensive items in the house. They all have themed names, and every one I tried was excellent. The standout was "Physics," made with Forty Creek Bourbon, walnut bitters, Convict Hill Oatmeal Stout, and maple syrup. Good god. Why have I never dumped bourbon in my stout?! It tasted like chocolate milk, but lighter...boozier...awesomer. (My date actually ordered this for himself and I stole it :) His "Singing in the Rain" was my second favorite: it had both scotch and whiskey in it (!) plus a bit of agave and orange rind. I was surprised I liked it so much. Simple. Good. I also tried the Hall Pass which seemed to be pretty popular: Gin, muddled blackberries, topped with sparkling peach. Beautiful. And refreshing. My boyfriend tried the Teacher's Pet as well with rye, and though the cinnamon was a nice touch, it was my least favorite. But again, all really great cocktails! Not quite as strong as a Weather Up or the like, but honestly, I like what they are doing here. Jesse ordered a couple local tap beers and I had a Fume Blanc. The prices compare to other pubs and bars in the area and the selection is decent. We came hungry and ordered the Mac 'N Cheese and an order of their pickled veggies with the "School House" sausage. The Mac 'N Cheese was absolutely delicious with ample rich gooey cheese. It has aged cheddar, Parmesan and topped with pieces of salty pancetta. The picked veggies was a substantial amount of various vegetables, carrots, pickles, beets and okra. The crumbly sausage was flavorful and seemed lean without being too dry. I thought the food was reasonably priced. What I didn't love is it is very loud inside. We couldn't hear each other whatsoever. It is one thing when it is only the chatter of customers but they also had music blaring. It is also very warm inside, eventually we sought out shade on the patio and it was actually cooler despite the fact it was in the 90s. There was also a mix up with my order and when getting in line to pay my bill another customer was charged for the wrong bill (both issues were with the same bartender). I do like this new Manor area pub and will definitely be back. I will however opt to sit outside on a cooler evening. Just got back from School House Pub and I must say I was quite impressed. The bar is very well done with a great school house theme (imagine that!). Everything down to the detail including a chalkboard, school bell, a number holder for food orders made of a ruler, chalk eraser and number, shelves MADE of books, etc. We didn't get too far in the food menu. In fact, we didn't make it past the appetizers. I had the cheese plate, which was huge. Only one cheese was lackluster, the rest were quite tasty (especially the one made with an IPA). The lady had the FRIED deviled eggs, whaaaaat. That's right, they fry the sons of bitches and then they put friggen chorizo on them. As a vegetarian, I've never been so jealous. Beer selection was good. They have about 20 beers on tap, 20 in a can or bottle and another 10 bombers (give or take). Cocktails were excellent. Personal favorites were "Physics" (amazing chocolately, whiskey goodness) and the Singin in the Rain. The Teachers Pet was also really good, but not a big fan of the Hall Pass, which was a little too sweet and expensive at $9 for a not so strong bev. Only negative was that the a/c was functioning, but not all that well. There were a lot of people though which may just be a function of opening night. We'll see! Bulleit rye, Cointreau, grapefruit bitters, barley malt, cinnamon. This is the cocktail to order. Much better flavor. Could do with .25 to .5oz less of the Cointreau and replace with bourbon. A little too syrupy sweet. Do appreciate that no cocktail is over $9. Food: Appetizers and sandwiches to choose from. Nothing over $10 again. Ordered the chorizo and eggs for an app and the pig pen burger for my meal. Fried deviled egg with crisp chorizo on top was SO TASTY. You get 4 of them. Worth every penny of the $4 I paid for em. Pork patty with bacon and ham, provolone, and arugula was not near as good as advertised. The arugula overpowers much of the sandwich and the chunks of ham in the patty are not a welcome surprise. Not a fan. Feels like I'm eating undercooked pork even though I know I'm not. Overall, there are some good items and some not so good. Lacks consistency. We've been to School House Pub a couple times in the past with friends and decided to go back again last night because we've always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. It's really cute inside with the bell and school-themed decor. Last night, however, they were BLARING the music and it was uncomfortably loud--since it's communal dining, people were practically screaming at each other for conversation. We got a couple beers and the Montreal fries and the grilled cheese with a side salad. First of all, if you're going to be all cutesie and not call it "poutine", then at least execute the dish well. The cheese didn't melt, so there were just random chunks of it scattered all over the plate. And while the meat/sauce tasted delicious, it was also in large chunks on top of the fries. The grilled cheese was equally not well thought-out: thick Texas toast pieces with a very thin middle layer of cheese. Why? The side salad was great. We were pretty disappointed in the food because we've always had great dishes at SHB in the past. What happened to the brisket fries? Those were much better. The place was also beyond packed last night and the busiest we've ever seen it, no doubt a testament to the growing and trendy Manor area. We just hope that this won't be one of those great Austin places that stops trying, rests on its laurels, and proceeds to go downhill. Even though we had a 3 star experience last night, we're rounding up to 4 because it's always been 5 stars in the past. Hopefully things will be better next time we visit. read more

I really, really enjoyed this place! I came here with friends for a birthday dinner so we could try something different and we just stumbled upon this place online. The atmosphere is really cute! It's all old schoolhouse themed with the set up and all. Their menu has cute names, and they have a pretty good drink menu too! I got the Steak & Fries and man was that amazing!!!! I'm not a big steak eater, but I just about ate the entire thing on my own. It was really juicy and delicious and they are very generous with the Parmesan fries too. This place is awesome. Comfy inside, lots of seats outside, fireside tables, great and genuinely friendly service, the best damn French fries I've ever had in Austin and close to taco joints. Seriously, a happy find. They have a dedicated food & drink order corner of the bar, which is so much nicer than standing uncomfortably close behind someone sitting and yelling an order over their shoulder. The bartenders were on point. Made great drinks, fast and actually smiled and chatted. Ya' know, like bartenders that like being bartenders. A rarity and really nice to encounter. This place was awesome! I came here for my roommates birthday and we just loved the ambiance. Ambiance and service: So you order at the bar and they give you a letter on a ruler connected to a chalkboard eraser. It's seriously so clever. The bartenders/servers working that day were really nice also! They asked if we had any questions on the menu and they were genuinely nice people. Food: I had their school house burger and truffle fries. I constantly say that I'm a French fry fanatic and these were a 10/10! So great! The burger was okay! I guess the onions kind of threw me off because they're marinated in something different so I was iffy about it. But I loved it here. I will definitely be back.
