The atmosphere is great but that is where it ended for us! We went for happy hour and honestly, it was a bit disorganized. We weren't sure who was working there and who were the patrons at first. The GM or owner was standing at the bar on his computer. It was kind of weird. We ordered wine and duck wings. After waiting 20 minutes for the duck wings my husband went to the bar to ask about them. The bartender forgot to input our order. They did not try to make it right except for just oops and reordering them. Now, if the duck wings were amazing then I would have excused the whole situation, I mean we are all human but sadly they were not. They did not deliver on the flavor they promised. And we're back to 3 stars. Hopfields just doesn't do it for us sometimes even though two of our close friends live and die by this place. We came here last weekend and had such a mediocre experience--food, service, everything, just SNOOZE. The ambience is still pleasant enough but service was very on-and-off (like, occasionally she was there, mostly she wasn't) and all of our dishes left a lot to be desired. The cheese plate was allegedly Antonelli's but felt more like an HEB sampler plus some random crackers. Salad verde was...fine? Like, greens with a massive hunk of cheese. OK! The mushroom pho one of us got as a main was bland AF. The broth tasted like pure water and the rest of the bowl was unimaginative and disappointing. The butter-poached halibut dish off their specials menu was probably the best thing we had all night since it was interesting with the beans and cucumber-fennel crumble side. Seems the kitchen was at least bringing their A-game with one dish! Dessert was creme brûlée and a pot de creme. Fine once again ZZZzzzzzzzzz. So, overall, we have no doubt that we will be here again because we seem destined to keep returning. Hopfield's is a much better place if you sit indoors. It is very easy to get a reservation here at one of the few places that provides unpretentious French food. The French toast is always a solid choice, I would pick it over the French omelette if I was a newcomer. But the Full English is both delicious and gorgeous to look at. Every part of it was cooked well. The eggs had perfectly runny yolks. The bacon is fatty and crispy at the same time. The sausage packed a helluva flavor punch. This dish made me enjoy tomatoes as a tomato-hater! Other aspects added different tastes and textures to give an odd sense of fun when eating. Somehow food looking food just made it taste even better. Our waitress was new but really went out of her way to not only provide me my Earl Grey, but honey and milk that wasn't listed on the menu. Before this meal I only came to Hopfield's rarely, but I most likely will come back much more often due to how enjoyable this breakfast is! read more

Came for dinner, without reservations, on Friday. It was pretty empty and easy to get a table, so we sat in the middle room of the place, which was somewhat of a makeshift library/lounge with old foreign decor. We got olives and almonds to start, with escargot, which came with small lettuce leaves and was in a red sauce (not your typical garlic butter). It was really good, different and interesting to try it in a different preparation. For the main, we split the steak and frites. It was probably the smallest portion of steak I've ever seen and if I had eaten it myself I probably still would have been hungry. But, it was really nicely cooked and seasoned, as well as the fries. So despite the size it was super good. Don't know if I'd come again, also because they only had some special cocktails and not a full bar, but it was interesting to try the place. read more

Everything from the food, beer, ambiance to relaxed vibes completely made my experience so wonderful. Hilary was our wonderful server, and she was super chill and relaxed. She definitely guided us towards the best menu items. We started with the pomme frites (fries) because they ran out of the escargot dumplings by the time we got there on a Sunday evening. I'll definitely go back and try those. The fries were heavenly. Like crisp, perfect thickness, and that garlic aioli though!! They had a wide array of beers, and I enjoyed their wheat, IPA and belgian options. There was something for everyone...cocktails, wine--you name it! They also serve tap water too. I was torn between the ratatouille and veggie burger. The mussel frites were the star of the table. My friend said her pascal burger was alright. It could have been more of a medium rare instead of a medium, but it definitely wasn't the "best burger" she'd had. I enjoyed the ratatouille. They give extra bread upon request--there's no way I was going to soak up all of the yummy juices of that flavorful ratatouille dish without BREAD! The food server was very friendly too. We didn't catch his name, but he was very knowledgeable when we asked him what was in the white aioli that came with our fries. In all, the experience is wonderful for good friends, dates and even family dinners. The place is dimly lit, sooooo those of y'all needing glasses might need to turn on that cell phone light. Came here for brunch on Saturday at 1. We had a reservation but honestly, we probably didn't need one as they didn't seen busy. The place has the east Austin hipster feel where it seems like an old house being converted into a restaurant. It's not very pretty if you get my point. The cocktails menu was limited but they had a lot of beer and wine options. I ordered what's equivalent of an expresso martini and the beef cheek Benedict's. It really wasn't as good as I thought it would be. It was kinda a subpar eggs Benedict's in comparison to all the other brunch places in Austin. My date got the croissant breakfast sandwich and it also was just ok. I had pretty much a three star reaction to all the food he joked. We also got the bread pudding dessert cause honestly, the portion was kinda small and I was still hungry after I ate all my dates fries. The bread pudding was good but again could be better. We had dinner last night and I was surprised that I've lived in Austin for over 3 decades and never heard of this delightful French restaurant. We started with burrata and figs served with baguette slices which was good but didn't wow me. The escargot dumplings were absolutely delicious and the waiter brought extra baguette slices so we could soak up the left over sauce. Definitely try these! I had the mushroom leek tart served with salad greens. If there was dressing on the greens, I couldn't detect much of it. My companions ordered the pascal burger and moules frites. The mussels were served in a quite spicy sauce and the frites (fries) had an aioli garlic sauce sprinkled on top. Yum! We shared a large creme brûlée between the 3 of us and it had a delightfully crunchy sugar crust on top of smooth custard - fabulous! I'll be back! read more

Best steak frites I've had in a long time! House-made fries done right is a rarity. Oddly enough, the green salad was also a standout. It is a traditional vinaigrette that clings to whole Bibb lettuce leaves that you eat with knife and fork. Very French. I also really like the layout of the restaurant. Having a lot of small spaces rather than one large dining room makes for a more intimate experience. The food was a little slow to come out, but it did arrive hot, not like it had been sitting around. To start, the layout of the place is kinda quirky. The front is a dive bar. As you maneuver toward the back, the the rear restaurant portion is noticeably in need of a decent renovation. The place seems very slapped-together with a Home Depot DIY aesthetic. And perhaps that's the desired aesthetic to match the hodge-podge furniture, mismatched place settings, and rag-tag staff who are unshaven and wearing oversized ratty t-shirts and jeans. But the result is a fairly uncomfortable ambiance. (The blade of my knife had a few finger-smudges and there was a piece of old food encrusted between two tines of my fork. I discreetly swapped my silverware with the unused place setting next to mine. I would have expected the unused place settings to have been removed but ultimately, I'm glad that they were not.) We allotted two hours before we would need to leave to make it to our next engagement. But ultimately, service was so slow that the latter portion of our time spent there was frantic. Who wants to be forced to shovel down the meal in a rush in order to make it to the show on time? Not me. Others at the table enjoyed the Escargot Dumplings and praised that the French Onion Soup was the best that they'd ever had. After a surprisingly long wait-time between the small plates and the main course, we started to get a bit concerned about time so we flagged down the server to let him know that we had a firm end-time and that we'd like the check delivered with the food. Not too long after that, two of the four main courses were served. Instead of waiting for the other two dishes to arrive, we insisted that our friends start eating (assuming that the remaining two meals would be arriving shorty.) We were mistaken. It was almost ten minutes before our plates arrived. My two friends felt uncomfortable for eating in front of us before our food had arrived and my date and I had to scarf down the entire meal in a matter of only a few minutes. There was even confusion about the cocktails that were delivered: the "smoky" cocktail tasted like chocolate and the "chocolate" cocktail was mostly whiskey! read more

My husband and I paid Hopfields a visit over a little weekend getaway to Austin, and it was an interesting experience. It started off very strong! The hostess was bubbly and sweet. We had reservations, but showed up a few minutes early, which proved to be no problem at all. The restaurant itself is decorated in a way that is very trendy and Instagram-worthy. Our server Savannah was lovely: welcoming, with a dry sense of humor and very apparent knowledge of the menu. Then the food came The peaux de poul was DELICIOUS. Extremely crispy, VERY well-seasoned without going overboard, and the house pimento cheese was delectable. The fish and chips were a disappointment like no other. The crust was so delicious: glassy, crisp, slightly chewy. The cod, the fish itself, was well-cooked: moist, not tough at all, very mild. But then, sadly, it was BLAND. My goodness, it was bland. Were it not for the tartar sauce and malt vinegar, the actual fish would be inedible. Judging by the masterfully-prepared fries, the chef clearly knows what they're doing, but they missed the mark on the fundamentals: salt and pepper. My mussels dish was a mixed bag. A flub putting the order in led to my entree arriving 20 minutes after my husband's. Then, sadly, it was prepared incorrectly (I wanted baguette instead of fries, so it ended up taking another 8-10 minutes or so before my dish hit the table). The chili sauce is not for the faint of heart: this dish is SPICY, but the seasoning is not overly enthusiastic and it eats well. The drinks were absolutely delicious: a corn-whiskey 'rita, a berry martini, and a Mexican martini kept us very satisfied and feeling quite nice. Clearly, the bartender is adept at their trade. Brilliant! Hopfields, overall, felt like a strong player having an off game. Lots of potential in what we saw, but in need of some fine tuning. I came here for a team dinner and it was fantastic. We had the chicken live mouse (5 stars!), pickled vegetables, cheese plate and I got the lobster roll. Other people got the pork chops and steak and really enjoyed it as well. One coworker said the hamburger was the best one she's ever had. The waitress was excellent. Very friendly and funny. Got all our drink orders and food orders right. The place is super cute, just like you'd expect out of Austin. I'm definitely coming back here! read more

Half-an-hour passes and still no breakfast, except for 2 glasses of OJ. No-one came over to check up on us or offer refills. Hop fields was such a pleasant surprise given how close it is to UT campus. They have an extensive beer list, but what I really loved was the "cocktails". They are made with sherry and fortified wines. I got one with grapefruit and absolutely LOVED it. It was so creative and delicious. That being said, they do not serve hard alcohol. As for the food, we go the Mushroom Leek Tarte, Moules Frites, and Pascal Burger. We loved them all! The tarte was flaky and perfect and the burger delicious. I wasn't super wild about the fries and a with I had subbed them for a side salad, but I guess I will know for next time! The modules frites were great, but also had quite the kick, so don't order unless you like spicy food. Overall, the atmosphere with the outdoor patio was phenomenal and the food was superb! We ate here for Valentine's Day2022. After being seated and our initial order taken, our server didn't return for 50 minutes. I asked the person that delivered our dinner if I could place a drink order with them, to which they replied "I'll get your server". The server never came. When our server finally checked in and we communicated we hadn't received any service for a very long time, the reply was "do you want to order dessert". We ate our main course with nothing to drink. This is my girlfriends favorite restaurant, and she was very upset that my experience was so terrible. I called the next day to discuss with a manager. None were available, so I left my name and number. I never received a call back, so at least they are consistent. A friendly and happy "gastro" + "pub". The "gastro" part is really quite good. The food isn't spectacular, but *is* quietly consistent, the type of place that you come back to over and over again. The "pub" part is brilliant - a constantly changing/updated selection of beers, that they staff is more than happy to discuss with you in crazy depth. Mind you, i'm not downplaying the food - it's really very very good, but it's important to note that it isn't the kind of food that hits you upside the head saying "check me out! I'm awesome!", but more the type that you nosh on while having a beer, or two, or three, whiling away the time with your friends. Hopfields has been one of my go to favorites for the last 10 years. It has a has a fun lively atmosphere and a strong following of regulars who either work (me) or live nearby. That being said, I don't eat at this price point often unless it is a date or something special. Today I ordered the pho, and my girlfriend had the ratatouille. We should have both sent our dishes back after the first bite. My $30.00 soup was served in a tepid under- salted broth. Why tepid? Probably because the cook put a handful of cold raw scallions, mushrooms, and bok choy into a bowl and brought the temp down. So the soup was tepid; the veggies were not cooked at all. This equals ZERO umami, zero joy to the soul, and zero pleasure. I was so hungry I would have gladly eaten my hand so I did not send it back. My friend's ratatouille was also un-tasty. Over salted and uncooked zucchini chunks in a weird pickled red sauce sauce that tasted like kimchi without the cabbage . We mixed the 2 together and ate it. Uggghhhh-- busy Friday night or not, I should have sent that schlock back and let the manager know. Based on previous excellent experiences here, I cannot believe these are "new improved" recipes. read more
