Heartbreaking to say, especially because we live in the neighborhood and have gone to Hopfields for years, but this place has lost our business for good. Just an epically bad experience all around (seriously, the worst restaurant experience in my 52 years of life on the planet). This little cafe is whimsical, creative, and cozy. I got the Salade Nicoise which is amazing, it is the best salad I've ever had and so colorful. The green beans that come with the salad have fennel seed on them which adds so much flavor. The service is amazing and feels laid back in a comforting way little pressure. A rip off. Service was horrible. Mains arrived BEFORE the appetizers even though we ordered appetizers a half hour before we ordered the main dishes. Then the ratatouille main dish arrived tepid. We asked if they could warm it up and they said they don't have a microwave. They will have to make another one. The other one never came. Then we were charged for two of them. It took 40 minutes to get the second bottle of wine by which time we were done eating. You don't expect this horrible experience for $100 a person. I thought this was a special place to take my friends from out of town, but it was a disaster. a required 25% gratuity. Main dishes that arrive spaced out over 30 minutes. read more

Had a rough experience here last weekend. Had a reservation and had to wait 10 minutes to sit down, no one came to the table for 20 minutes. Drinks and apps took 45 minutes. While waiting for entrees a group of 6 people across from us walked out because it was taking too long for their food to come. As they were walking out their food came. Very awkward. Table full of food sat there. Sad to see. Didn't get our food for another hour and my burger came out raw. It was seared on the outside and raw hamburger meat on the inside. I don't normally write reviews but I couldn't justify not writing one for this. I'm sure the restaurant is understaffed and the fault of ownership, not the people working there. They comped and remade the burger but I was too grossed out to eat the second one. Positives were drinks and cheeseboard we had were great ! Seems like it was once a good place. Definitely one of the better Austin brunch spots I've hit. The main draw for us was probably the beer selection, but you can't really argue with or turn down inexpensive riffs on french food. You order at the bar, and they bring you the food. Wasn't particularly busy when we stoppedy trough on a Sunday morning around 11am, though it's always been my understanding people in Austin don't wander into brunch before noon, which seemed to be the trend the longer we were there, which was quite some time by the time we left. We ordered a carafe of mimosas, then several beers throughout the meal. I was impressed by the number of stouts, and beers on nitro in general. As for sustanence we ordered the biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwhich and eggs benedict. I didn't try everything, but can say with absolute certainty that the biscuits and gravy were killer. Sausage on the bottom was well spiced, and the gravy had brisket, which gets bonus points in my book. Will definitely return for lunch or dinner to see what that's all about! read more

I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered the Mondo Burger. French toast and a hamburger...with syrup? I love all of those things, but together? Would it work? Would one overwhelm the other? I can confirm this confusing combo works. It's like an upscale McGriddle and it lives up to that legacy. After all, that's the only reason to eat at McDonald's. This burger was messy and I couldn't have been happier about it. The egg-battered dipped bun was delicious and really didn't even need the syrup. Of course, I used it anyway. Sweet and savory came together and then fell apart as my bun slid apart in my hands. The burger was outstanding and I would order it again, but it's not for clean, delicate diners. As other reviewers said, the interior is eclectic and memorable. I could have eaten in any room and had an experience. Each room could be the backdrop for a poem or vignette. Hopfields has an interesting setup where there doesn't seem to be any table service - we came in on a pretty busy Friday night and were told to place our orders at the bar. We were sat at a small table in the front (side by side in a booth, no extra chairs) and realized the bar was PACKED. So, to order $30 mussels, I have to get up and shout OVER a couple just trying to have a nice evening. My partner and I bailed before we ordered, so I can't speak on the food. We needed a place that wasn't packed but also wasn't a soulless chain restaurant and this was just what we needed. We were drawn by the yelp reviews and the promise of a good beer selection. We had the moules, steak frites, onion and potato tart and Nutella crepe. It was all fantastic. The moules were very different and had a spicy kick to them. Steak frites could rival any brassiere in Paris. Nutella crepe at the end had a touch of honey and lavender that took it to a while new level. And yes, beer selection delivered as well. This place really hit the spot! Gussied up french gastropub food with a super chill environment. Really nice beer selection, they let you sample a few until you find the one you like. They also had one of my favorite ciders! You seat yourself and order at the bar. We got the mussels and frites, the burger, and the ratatouille. The sauce the mussels were in was really quite good, perfect for French fry dipping after the mussels were gone. I love Hopfields. You should check them out: The layout is fabulous, with a pleasant pub up front and a snaking corridor of intimate private dining nooks as you go back. Great beer selection and a small-but-thoughtful list of wines by the glass. The food can be really good, and if I'd thought to write a review after previous visits I'd have given Hopfields four or five stars. But alas. For years I've suggested it as a dinner option to a friend who'd never been, and recently she took me up on the idea. I saw a dinner entree I hadn't noticed on previous visits - I believe the dish was called "Berkshire Pork" or some such. Sounded interesting, and the $27 price tag promised it would be something special. It was not. I was too absorbed in conversation to recall the description of the dish or its exact components but it was a disappointment by any measure at $27. Seemed to be a few desiccated medallions of pork loin with a small starchy cake (grits or polenta?), served on a bed of innocuous sauce/paste and festooned with a few greens and grains. The pork was overcooked-leftovers level of dry. The grains (or whatever provided crunch) was a bit too-crunchy - think stale Corn Nuts that you're worried might break a tooth. I didn't complain because I was there to hang out with my friend and sending the dish back would have resulted in us watching one another eat, in turn, taking more time than either of us had to spare. I suppose I'm writing this review in hopes that Hopfields might take note and consider doing two things: Step up quality control and, more importantly, maybe not try to play in the $27 entree league. I seem to recall spending about half that number on earlier visits and feeling happy with almost everything. Anyway, you're good, Hopfields, and I still adore you. Update: I now believe that Hopfields is the best restaurant in town. They have the most diverse, delicious, and truly culinary menu at the best prices. The staff is friendly and professional, the drinks are outstanding, and the ambiance is just right. It's my favorite in town--officially--and that's saying a lot in Austin. You will not be disappointed! Fellow celiacs: most of the menu is gluten free, it's really easy to eat safely here. Excellent ciders, often on draft. -- Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Over due praise incoming. Hopfields has the best burger and fries in town, hands down. I really mean this. They offer Washington state ciders on draft which are truly top notch and 6% or higher. If you love East Ciders in Austin, these are a must try at Hopfields. Service here is consistently great. The soft was very good and strong but the other two were nothing special. The French bread was no better than grocery store version. The pickled veggies were interesting but limp. By son got the burger but again. Outing special except it tasted heavily of the strong cheese. The pommel frites were solid but not special. He didn't finish either. I had the spicy ratatouille, which I did enjoy the spin on the French dish. But the spice was a bit over the top hot, so I wouldn't suggest for everyone. The waiter was overworked and we didn't see her for long periods, so we skipped second drinks or dessert. That's what finally got them the 2 stars. If my husband and I could open a restaurant. It would be very similar to Hopfields. A place where beer aficionados, wine connoisseurs, and craft cocktail enthusiasts can come together in harmony and eat food made from scratch in house. They use local fresh produce for a seasonal focused French inspired menu. The prices are reasonable for the quality. I also love the void of pretentiousness here. The servers were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. They have a great craft beer program and focus on food and beer pairings. The front bar is first-come first-served, with communal seating. You just place your order at the bar, and find a table. The food is then brought to you. Or, you can reserve in advance a spot in their back dining room which is hidden in cool nooks. The back room dining is the way to go. It's quiet and you can carry a conversation. Everything we had here was five star. Our group started with a cheese board and radish salad. This was one of the best cheese plates I have had. The radish salad was fresh and delicious. For the main course, my husband had the special of the day pesto pasta dish, and I tried the Steak Frites. The steak frites were THE best steak frites we have had since moving back from the French side of Switzerland 4 yrs ago. The steak was perfectly cooked to be crisp on the outside and then melt into butter on the inside. Full of flavor and juicy goodness. The fries were crisp and tasted decadent with the fresh herbs and aioli sprinkled on top. I am glad I was hungry because I saved room to share dessert. The dessert is not to be missed. This place tops many lists of "most essential Austin restaurants" and the like, and the steak frites are most often cited as the dish to get. As, such I went to this restaurant and ordered that dish. The place seemed charming enough with a nice beer and wine list (no booze) and a pleasant enough, if pretty generic and neutral atmosphere, and was packed on a Saturday evening. The dish was pleasing to the eye and the fries were delicious and well prepared, and I guess so was the steak, which of course benefited from a big dollop on infused compound butter topping it. However the lost me with he selection of a filet for the steak, which only served to further confirm to me my belief that the pricy cut is lacking in fat, flavor, and moisture. Indeed this one was no exception, dry and relatively flavorless, and pretty damn tiny to boot, I know its a filet but this is still Texas, right? If you look at the accompanying pic you'll see the scale of the minuscule filet on the plate, surrounded and overwhelmed by a massive pile of fries. I'll take a juicy and fatty NY Strip anytime and would probably find it hard to make another visit to this place on a future trip down to ATX based off that extremely disappointing lil glob of meat. read more

My hamburger was served basically raw after asking for medium. We ordered bacon on both of our hamburgers but the waiter did not place the order with the bacon on them. Thankfully, we were not charged. Waiter was inattentive and did not check on us to ask how our food was until we had finished eating. He did not bring water to us the whole meal, after we had been out for 30 minutes. Wanted to order dessert but because the waiter wasn't attentive, we felt our time was wasted time and chose to leave. $70 + tip is robbery for such mediocrity. Awesome... fantastic...great place to grab food and or drinks. So I have come here many times for beers and just love the atmosphere... particularly near the bar. It has a little European-feel in my opinion. Anywho...as I was saying, I have been here in the past and have only had their Pascal Burger. Really good burger with awesome fries... crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and they serve it with mayo...like I said, really European. What you need to try is the mussels and frites....mind blown! So so good. The sauce that the mussels come in is amazing. This place is a hidden gem. I used to live across the street from this place but never went, but came back here for a lunch with a friend for a birthday since he wanted French food. It's surprisingly legit french food. The jambon beurre is so-so - I've had better french ham sandwiches with more potent ham flavor and better baguettes. The butter and Camembert add some good richness and a bit of salt; cornichons add some texture (though I wish they were sliced) and some crunch. The lightly dressed salad on the side is good to, but I guess for me this dish pays homage to just good french picnic food, which is more nostalgic for me than anything. But what puts this place as really really good though, is the moules frites. Steamed mussels in a non-traditional spicy sauce (gochugaru spiked) that adds a pleasant heat to the dish. Ask for some baguette on the side to dip into that broth. The fries and aeoli in the dish are amazing - some of the best fries you'll have in Austin. It comes in a huge bowl and can easily split between 2 less hungry people. Atmosphere is a bit loud for my liking, but guess I expected that coming in. They have a lot more interesting things on the menu I would like to try again one day though, so hope to be back! read more

I had high expectations for Hopfields after reading numerous glowing reviews, but sadly my experience didn't match up. The service was a bit slow given the fact we were sat at the bar and were never more than an arms length from the front of house staff, who were for the most part polite. The trouble really began, however, after I received the Pascal Burger -- with a hair visibly clinging to one of the pomme frites. And boy, did it cling. The hair was so well lodged within the plate of fries than when I picked it up, the fry came with it. My dismay was not matched by that of the staff. After responding to my gesture, the woman immediately responded, "That's weird. No one back there has long hair." After a beat she asked, "Do you want to keep the burger?" The initial error in Hospitality 101 was unfortunate, but once I explained I'd prefer a clean plate of food the original order was cleared from the bar and (too) soon after a new burger appeared. The server marveled upon delivery at the odd nature of the hairs arrival, repeating that no one in the kitchen has long hair. (Note: all three front of house staff had long hair.) The plate at least was hair-free upon the second attempt, but it appears that in the rush to get the replacement order out of the kitchen the chef didn't give himself enough time to finish the frites. They were undercooked and bordered on raw in places. Overall, my meal was a bust due to the unwanted hair, lackluster service, and aggressive over-salting of the food. My hopes for hops were satisfied by the great selection of suds, but there were precious few other aspects of my visit to redeem the experience. read more

Exceptional Service. Thats the thing that really stood out to me here. The staff was friendly, attentive and made sure my party had a good experience. This a smaller establishment thats easy to miss but you should definitely pay attention and stop by if you're in the area. The decor and coziness makes you feel like you're in a classic pub. I had the port of havana to drink and it was delicious. Lighter on the alcohol(as intended) but it still tasted like a real drink and had an assortment of flavors that I haven't had before but I loved them. For food I tried the burger which was really solid. Cooked well, tasted fresh and the flavor from the caramelized onions made sure it was far from bland. The service was pretty prompt and the atmosphere of this place is really unique; there are three sections of this restaurant and they all have different themes in decor and music that was being played. I ordered their brunch frittata (which wasn't on their menu; perhaps it was a temporary offering), which was like an omelette stuffed with potatoes, sun-dried tomatoes, and goat cheese (topped with tomatoes and veggies). Burger crew meeting called to order on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at 12:30pm (Burger Crew Does Austin 2017). Members in attendance: Angela d., Sumana S., Trevor Y., and Wayne T. Members who are living in regret: Dennis K. I. Ordering Trev and I split the Pascal Burger ($15) - camembert, cornichon, whole grain mustard, caramelized onions, brioche bun, +farm egg ($1.50), +bacon ($2.50). Comes with pommes frites and aioli. We also ordered a couple beers. Wayne and Sumana also split the Pascal Burger, no additions. II. The burgers The patty came out over cooked: more medium instead of medium rare, but it had a nice sear on it. The patty did not really have a meaty flavor, and it definitely could have benefited from more seasoning. The bun was a little dry, and there was too much bread. We all had some left over bun at the end of our meal. There was too much mustard and the flavor was too strong. Maybe it wouldn't have tasted so strong if the mustard were spread on the top bun instead of the bottom bun. The camembert served with the rind and had a funky flavor (now funky doesn't necessarily mean bad. If you like more funk in your cheese then this is great!). The cheese was also gooey and oozing out of the burger, which we loved. Cornichons were good and the onions were really sweet. This burger was definitely unique. III. The Fries/Sides Fries were on the limp side. I think they needed to keep them in the fryer just a bit more. Came with mayo, but they also bring ketchup on request. IV. Miscellaneous There is a little parking lot in the back. There is also street parking, but there are a lot of limitations so watch the street signs. It has a cute vibe and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. There are little nooks with tables if you want more privacy. They have great beers on tap. During lunch, you order at the bar and it is open seating. You get old taps as your order marker. Servers were really friendly. There's also a water station so you can serve yourself. V. Value We have a new way to measure value. I ask the members how much they would pay for the burger they ate. We would pay anywhere from $11 to $13 for this burger. So this burger is a little on the high side since it's priced at $15 (including fries). VI. The verdict This is a unique burger, but that didn't make it good. Give me more meat flavor, please! We came here for a 'light' meal. My friend got the mussle and fries which were definitely good enough to share if you wanted to. I got the scotch egg and escargot dumplings. Everyone I was with really enjoyed what we got -- we tried the French toast with berry jam and toasted coconut, croissant breakfast sandwich, avocado tartine with a fried egg, eggs benedict, and grapefruit mimosas. Great service, chill ambience (especially for brunch at 11am on a Saturday!)--just great all around. I rarely leave negative reviews for restaurants, but Hopfields needs to make some changes. Last year I went to Hopfields and ordered the steak frite, medium rare. I got a medium steak and had to order another. Last week, I tried Hopfields again. I ordered a cheese board, and the waitress didn't give much information about the three small pieces of cheese. I also ordered the salads Nicoise. It was a plate of sliced potatoes, green beans, olives, and tuna with lettuce piled on top. It was an upside down salad with a little dressing on the lettuce. None of the other components had dressing. My companion had a mushroom, onion tart, actually a piece of a tart accompanied by a pile of frisée with no dressing.
