This was my first time here at Hoovers and likely my last. Sadly, my experience was not very good. The ONLY thing good was my Pork Chop! It was delicious & that's why they get 2 Stars & not 1. My sides were cold (creamed spinach & Mac & Cheese)! This is not something that's good cold. The service was awful. I waited at least 5 minutes before I was acknowledged & they were not busy at all. I also drove way out of my way to go here because I was in the mood for some good Southern Soul Food. What a disappointment read more

You know, I'm really not sure why I go back here. I feel like I forget the quality of the food between visits. It's just okay. I think I even like Threadgill's a little better for home-cooked food. On my last visit I ordered the catfish fillets and got catfish nuggets. That ain't right! read more

My mom suggested Hoovers one day while the family was out. I had never heard of the place but was willing to try something new. I was not disappointed. I had the meat loaf with mac n cheese and yams. I still dream about those yams!! I will definitely be back...possibly to get take out this very weekend. read more

Good food. Always wanted to try their cocktails bc they describe them well. Even my picky son loves this place.

Mmm, mmm, good. Can't do it often or I'll have a coronary, but love to order up any of the fried options (chic'n, steak, pork chops) with "veggies" (jalapeno creamed spinach, black eyed peas, mac n'cheese) and wash it all down with a mini-pitcher of lemonade. The desserts are mostly tasty too, especially the sweet potato praline pie. Take the tagemet with you. read more

I ate there last week for a late lunch, I ordered the 3 veggie plate, spinach, mac and cheese and salad. It took a while for the food to come out, mac and cheese was BLAND tasted like it came out of the carton, spinach was cold and even more bland, salad was decent. So 3 veggie plate and 2 of the 3 veggies were NOT GOOD, I mentioned this to a friend of mine, he told me when his sister was visiting recently he took her there and had a similar experience. I will not be going back anytime soon. read more

Chicken fried steak, mashed, milk gravy, fried okra, salad - all fantastic. Add excellent service and great sweet tea and you've got yourself a winner. read more

I've been here a couple of times but today will definitely be my last. After sitting at the bar it took awhile to get acknowledge and took even longer to get my food. Once I did get my food it was somewhat cold, definitely not hot. The food probably sat in the back for some time before it was brought to me. I've worked in the service industry long enough to know NOT to send food back. My meatloaf sauce was too sweet and my sides were okay. The meal probably would have been better if it was fresh of the line? I would have given another star but the customer service was horrendous. I should have left once I saw that my server was in the weeds, but I decided to give it a shot and was disappointed. Time to hit up Threadgill's next time I want some Southern Food. read more

Awesome comfort food. Really friendly staff, really laid-back place, and really good food. The chicken-fried steak was fantastic, as was the fried catfish (really, really good.) The mac + cheese, mashed potatoes, and mustard greens were all top notch as well. I washed it down with their home-made lemonade, which they refilled for me in a to-go cup. Great food, great place to bring out-of-towners for some Southern cooking. Can't wait to go back! read more

I love southern home cooking and Hoover's delivers exactly that. The 1/2 chicken with squash and mustard greens hit the spot. Service was good too. Looking forward to visiting again. read more

Wonderful! Used to eat at the one in SA when it was open! So when looking for places in Austin to eat on our way through town I saw this and had to eat there! Just the way I remember the one in SA. Sure do wish it was still there!!!! Great food and great service! read more

Hoover's is right down the road from us which I believe is a good thing. I really love their chicken- not the fried stuff- I have never had that- but the bbq or jerk. so flavorful and tasty. my husband and I will also walk down occasionally just to get dessert- check out the blackboard for what is available that day. not every meal there has been great though- i am not a fan of their brisket; sometimes the wait for the food is epic; and my order was mixed up once (they added a piece sausage) and instead of letting me keep it- they took it away (odd to say the least). overall though, the meals are consistently good and most people I know who have gone keep returning. read more

Their food was a bit over the top with pepper, but otherwise it was pretty tasty as homestyle food goes. The service was excellent. The atmosphere was comfortable. I enjoyed trying it and might go again if I lived closer. read more

Services was great!! Chicken breading was a tad bit gummy.. Majority of it was already in the container. Hot and fresh grease could've easily been a quick fix!!! Will try again #chik 'n waffles read more

I am not used to Southern cooking, but if this is it, then damn yes, it is good. The chips are pretty good to start with, as is the queso: just something about it. The servings are GINORMOUS; I really tried to finish everything, but failed miserably. Had the charbroiled catfish; I want to try the jerk chicken next time. My boyfriend and his family had pie and cobbler; supposedly very good: I was too full. So I am begging him to bring me back to Austin. Hoover's should definitely be on the agenda. read more

We were at Hoover's this past Saturday, 2/22/2020. I paid my bill with my debit card, wrote cash in the tip line and my husband left the cash tip on the table. Fast forward to Tuesday and I see on my bank statement that there was an added $8.51 added to the charge on my card. I call the restaurant and talk to Evan on Tuesday night and he assured me that he would take care of the problem and call me the next day. Well, the next day come around and guess what? No phone call from Evan. So I call again and talk to Joaquin, he took my info and said he would call back. He did call me back only to tell me that I had to give them a credit card number so they could refund the money and of course it was something I didn't want to do since someone there had already taken money with my card without my consent. He said the only other option was to give me a gift certificate to come back and have a meal again, which was not going to happen because the people they have working there are dishonest to begin with. So I reluctantly gave them my card number and I was assured that I would have my refund by Thursday. I still haven't gotten my refund. DO NOT pay with a debit or credit card at this establishment because they will charge whatever they want! There workers are thieves in my opinion! And yes, I know it was only $8.51, but it was $8.51 that I worked hard to earn only for someone to steal from me! If there was a no star review, that's what this place would get. read more

I am very disappointed! I've been to Hoover's in the past but the experience that I had this visit is simply unacceptable. My experience began with having to wait for a hostess, or anyone, to greet us and seat us in a restaurant that was practically empty. Then once at our table I noticed the menus were new. Our frustration began with having to wait again for our server to arrive and take drink orders. We decided we didn't want to order a meal for both of us, because my husband was not really hungry but I was. So he was planning to nibble off my meal. Oh, but NO!! The menu notes that if an entree was going to be shared they charge 3.00 for an extra plate and no extra or larger size entree. What the hell? And with that it states that an 18% gratuity is added automatically. Again, what the hell? So I look at the kids meals and I'm baffled to see in bold that is an adult is ordering a kids meal there is a 4.00 up charge but no larger portion. Again, What The Actual Hell? At this point I'm ready to leave because I still haven't had the waitress come to take our order or even check on us. Remember practically empty restaurant. So I see a card in the middle of the table asking for a donation of a 1.00 to help pay for their employees sick days. Are you KIDDING me? This was my last straw so we decided to leave and eat elsewhere. All of the extra money gouging is not friendly customer service and not acceptable at all if you honestly think your food is good and worth paying higher prices. I'm not going back and I'm not advising friends to go for all of those reasons. read more

Just had lunch here and honestly felt like I absolutely had to take a moment to commend this place. The moment I walked in, the hostess had a warm welcoming smile, characteristic of true southern culture! Our waiter, Rob, was hilarious. Constantly joking with us, and making us feel very welcome and comfortable. The food was excellent - all made from SCRATCH - nothing out of a can or a box. You could certainly taste the difference. I had the fried catfish, sweet yams, and collard greens. Wanted a nice southern homestyle meal and I got one! The prices were EXCELLENT. There's few restaurants in Austin that combine their food quality, generous servings, and LOW prices like Hoover's. No wonder they're lauded in the press and papers so often. This is a must try when in Austin. Will certainly be coming back - maybe regularly! read more

Um no! Overcooked food, meatloaf smothered in tomatoes from a can, service mediocre, & overall weird...not southern in the least.

OMG I've died and gone to heaven! Austin's only real southern fried eatery. Their desserts are amazing!

I waited to be seated and once seated the servers all looked mad because they were closing today at 4. If you dont want people eating at your place lock the doirs read more

When I need a hearty meal that does nto disappoint, I go get the Chicken fried chicken, mac n cheese and sweet potatoes. I like the mash potatoes but they are always warm. The bread is thin and hard now when it used to be really fluffy. Bypass the chicken fried steak because it is bland. Ribs are good but they are TOO little and too expensive. I recommend this place to people who are not weight conscious and who want filling meals from pleasant people. The wait staff os always friendly. read more

Good!!! I always leave happy. I have heard that the service is not so great but every time I go I am just fine with the service. Everything is delicious.... except I once ordered a smothered pork chop and I personally did not like it. Its just not really what I was expecting (my mom makes hers different). MMMMmmmm. Casual place. Great place to take the family from out of town. read more

I have been to Hoover several times and left stuffed eacha every time. the portion are belt busting and your wallet is never hit hard. It is easy to share meals here and I remind myself that this is good old southern cookin done right. the desserts are awesome and the chicken fried chicken and the pot roast and meat loaf were excellent. I will be sending many there way over the years.. read more

OMG! Due to reviews from Yelp friends I went and had dinner at Hoover's did I say OMG? The jerk chicken was " The Bomb"! So next time I'am going for the jerk ribs! can't wait!!! read more

Hoover's is pretty good. They serve true southern comfort food! I highly recommend the chicken fried steak or chicken! They have great sides, too, including mashed potates, mac and cheese, and good garlic cheese grits! If you like lemonade, you have to try their own which is served in its own little pitcher! Also, i've heard that this location is way better than the north location on Hwy 183. read more

I think Hoover's has gone downhill. The vegetables are nearly tasteless. I found myself pouring tabasco sauce into them to get some flavor into them. I can't say whether they were undercooked or overcooked, as they were just so dull. And stringy. We had the brownie dessert, and it seemed like something your ten year-old daughter might make using a mix. Positively meh. read more

I always liked Hoovers, but something about the food yesterday that was so perfect. I couldn't stop hmmm-ing, the food was just so good I think I dreamed about it last night. Please please try the jerk chicken, garlic cheese grits, chicken n sausage gumbo and mango cobbler(ok this is optional, but I loved it too). My friend's trout and broccoli rice were nice but they didn't stand a chance against the flavor explosion that my order brought. If you're on a diet, just get the jerk chicken and a cup of gumbo. Or just get a cup of gumbo. read more

Wow. I'm so happy that Austin has a consistent comfort food place, that isn't over priced! Service is usually great - our favorite server is a really nice complexioned South American/Latino/Mexican (not quite sure, and don't want to be rude) young man. He is always smiling, and pleasant. Can't say the same for all the servers levels of pleasantness, but they sure are REAL. And I'd rather get REAL than fake chipper attitudes. My fiance and I frequent this place a LOT. Favorites: Smothered Pork chop (Saturday Special), all of the pies and cobblers, cowboy beans, and their hot wings appetizer! read more

This place was both good and bad. I had the chicken fried steak. The flavor was good, but the steak was over cooked and not tender. The greens and bread are all cooked using sugar, which personally isn't my thing. The potato salad and fried okra were good. The main reason it gets 3 stars from me, though is the server. He truly acted like he didn't care to be there. The hostess paid more attention to us than our waiter. That said, the price and food are overall pretty good. I would go back and try something else. read more

Have eaten here since almost the beginning! Hoover Alexander can COOK! Love the food and can't wait to have their homemade Lemonade!

It's the sides that make this place memorable. Creamed spinach , Mac n chz , and collard greens were outstanding! Greens and spinach had a nice southern kick to them. I spent 6 yrs in the "A" and learned a lot about proper southern cooking. I took off a start due to the CFS being over cooked. But I am looking forward to returning to try the meatloaf or the pork chops or........... read more

Basics of southern cooking, which I usually end up with meat loaf or chicken fried steak with the various side options. My last lunch with friends I wanted something different so I tried the Red, White and Bleu burger. It has their wing sauce which if you would have asked me ahead of time I would thought it wouldn't have necessary but I would have been wrong and missed out. In fact I think they sell the sauce and I want more of it! read more

Quality southern comfort food. Here's what we tried: Chicken fried chicken Jerk Ribs Charbroiled cajun catfish mac n cheese potato salad jalapeno creamed spinach okra & tomatoes My husband was a little disappointed that his only option for fried chicken was the chicken fried chicken. I think we could've gone to their trailer across the street, but it wasn't worth the effort. The chicken, ribs, and catfish were all delicious. The ribs were a little spicy (and I like spicy), but I did like the unique flavor. The catfish was also really good and I may Hoover-size it next time. We killed the Hoover-sized order of chicken fried chicken. My favorite sides were the jalapeno creamed spinach, okra & tomatoes. The potato salad and mac n cheese were both okay. I thought the mac n cheese was bland, but remember I like spicy. We had great service although it was around 7pm on a Saturday and parking was limited. Drinks were also reasonably priced. We will be back. read more

I don't get it. This place is horrible! Service is always bad. The food is overcooked, bland, mushy or just weird tasting. Dislike.

Yum yum yum pretty much describes all the food I have ordered from Hoovers. I've tried the meatloaf and chicken fried chicken so far and have no regrets! Talk about real southern comfort food... mmmmm Staff has always been incredibly professional and friendly and I've never had to wait for seating. Prices are reasonable for the large portions they bring out - usually have enough left over for another meal. read more

Came here for breakfast today. I ordered the breakfast muffuletta with the home fries -which are cubed potatoes (since it comes with one side) and a coffee. It was definitely delicious and the service was great! My coffee maintained filled :) I couldn't finish my muffuletta so I took the other half home. It came with eggs, bacon, lettuce, tomatoes and cheddar cheese. Very delicious and fresh veggies! Definitely would love to come back to try their lunch/dinner items. read more

Was in Austin (Love you Linda and Robi) visiting some dear friends and was able to take my buddy to lunch- and the goal was mac n cheese so we stumbled across Hoover's...................and I will say that I am very pleased- we had a wait (at 145 on a Friday) so I was assuming that this place was packed for a reason- and I will say that everything we had (from the Jerk chicken to the jerk ribs and the array of side we went through was delish). I will say that service was quick and attentive without being all weird and in your business...great attitude and really nice spot. Parking was fine, right up front and the sausage I believe is local....good beers on tap as well...I will be back!!!! read more

Should be 3.5. Overall, I had some good eats at Hoovers. I had the Elgin (say el-giin) sausage with mac & cheese and mustard greens with an Arnold Palmer. The sausage -was- great! But there was a -whole- lotta sausage on my plate! 4 or 5 large links! Luckily, my friend took one off my hands, but even so, I could only handle 2+. if you get there before 6, you can get smaller meat portion plates that cost less and add an extra side...we got there too late for that one. The sides were ok. The greens were sweet, but I really liked them. Big chunks of smoked turkey (?) and pretty flavorful liquor in the bowl. Mac was kinda bland but decent. I nicked a taste from my friend of the rainbow trout special, which I found great, she thought a bit salty. Sauteed cabbage was bland and creamed spinach was a little thin. They had a molassses drop biscut in the bread basket that was good and probably great when it first came out warm (I grabbed mine at the end of the meal). Oh! And before I forget, the Arnold Palmer. It came to me in a pitcher. I then patiently waited for a glass...and then finally had to ask for one. I was given a blank stare and told "that's how we serve them here...but I'll get you one if you like" I get the large portions thing, but a pitcher??? It was a small pitcher, but still... Overall, my food was tasty and I left with a (very) full belly. Get thyself to Hoovers and bring your appetite! read more
