I went here for their fried catfish and the owner was kind enough to include a side of sweet potatoes for free. Both were very good. The catfish had a nicely seasoned and crispy breading and a good portion of food. I didn't end up using the, included, tartar sauce, because the seasoning alone flavored the fish perfectly. The sweet potatoes were very sweet and a little cinnamony. It was like a desert, served in a syrup as chunks of soft sweet potato, rather than as a mash. Good alone and paired with the fish. The location is a hole in the wall window in a gas station. Be prepared to wait in line, but you'll be glad you waited. Looks like they're best known for their chicken and fish, but they have daily specials and I noticed they have other items, like pork chops and meatloaf. This magnificent sandwich shop is within walking distance from my apartment and sadly, is a place that I sometimes had taken for granted. It's so much more than sandwiches. I literally ate there every day it was open last week. Often times I got two meals. One for lunch and other for dinner. My favorite meal was their chicken and dressing. Dressing is legit. Greens are good. Like you're at home and can eat a plate of dressing and greens. Service is polite and fast. I love that I get in and out. After getting my haircut, the plan was to get some BBQ across the street from the barbershop but my barber Ruben told me that it was closed and suggested that I check out Galloway Sandwich Shop. Well this sandwich shop turned out to be an old skool soul food restaurant. When I entered, I noticed a patron eating some nice sized fried catfish that made my mouth begin to water but instead I ordered the Cajun chicken, rice, greens, and some real cornbread. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the savory Cajun Chicken, I wish Steve's hand could have been a little heavier on the portion. Next time, I'll order the catfish. They talked me into ordering the banana pudding which reminded me of my grandmother's banana pudding and again, I should have ordered a double portion. All in all, I was well pleased with Ruben's recommendation and I will be returning for the catfish. read more

The food was unbelievable. It was so delicious and the portions were huge! This is a family owned place and you could tell there was a lot of TLC poured into the food. We were all watching Jerry Springer while eating and it was hilarious and I'll treasure that memory forever. My only complaint is a small one and that is that there were no posted prices. It was very reasonable but I didn't know until after I had eaten and was ready to pay. Come get some soul food from a true East Austin Staple you won't regret it. Hankering for mac 'n' cheese, I galavanted to Galloway's, which was the top hit on Yelp. Not realizing that Galloway's rotates their sides in addition to their entrées, Jon A. and I arrived to no mac 'n' cheese on a Saturday afternoon. (It was an option on Wednesday and Friday.) We decided to split an entrée ($8.10), which comes with two sides and a little cornbread muffin, and an iced tea ($1), which was very sweet. The platter was huge: I could never have finished it myself. We selected the barbecue brisket with buttered corn and collard greens. Other options available were smoked sausage, smoked chicken, potato salad, and red beans. The collard greens were my favorite course, but the lean brisket was cooked nicely, too. The Galloways seemed to both be working that day, aprons and all. There were some regulars who appeared and greeted them. Also, it is a sandwich shop, and the sandwiches are on a separate menu from the big dry-erase board from which we selected our options. The restaurant is fairly small and has about six to eight tables that seat about eight each. We shared our plastic tableclothed table with a lady who ate her lunch by herself. Another table near us sat a family with a couple of young children, while a Capital Metro employee shared a meal with a friend. The verdict: Galloway's seems like a great gathering place in its neighborhood and is family-run. We'll be back for more of its delightful soul food. read more

While the ambience leaves a little to be desired (read: 12th and Chicon plus no A/C), the food more than makes up for it. Galloway's is a little treasure in East Austin. It is a no-frills, down-home, soul food restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I haven't eaten Galloway's breakfast before, but the lunch is excellent. When you walk up to the register, where you place your order, there is a breakfast menu taped to the counter. The lunch items are not listed anywhere. Instead, the incredibly hospitable man behind the counter will tell you what they are offering today. You can choose one of the main dishes on offer plus two sides for $6.50. Today they were offering catfish fillets or roast beef, plus green beans, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and another side that I can't recall. I think that the choice of main dishes changes daily, and I seem to recall reading that it rotates weekly (catfish fillets and roast beef every Friday, meatloaf every Monday, etc., but I'm not sure about that--you can always call ahead and ask what they are offering today if you are curious). I chose the roast beef, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. The guy chuckled and pointed out that I was choosing two starches, and I told him it was OK, that I really wanted to try both. The beef was excellent, with a delicious brown gravy. The meat was perfectly seasoned and falling-apart tender. It took me back to Sunday dinners as a child at my grandmother's house. The mashed potatoes were the best mashed potatoes I've ever had at a restaurant. The macaroni and cheese was too hot to eat at first, and the sauce was a little bit thinner than I would normally prefer, but the flavor was great. The corn muffin that came with the meal was dry in a Southern cornbread kind of way, and I think it would have been better if they had greased the muffin tin with some bacon grease the way my grandmother would have done it (it gives the cornbread an incredibly rich and crispy crust), but It was fine the way it was, especially after dipping it in some of the gravy. One thing to note is that Galloway's does not offer ANY soft drinks. Only punch, tea, or water. Maybe they have milk, too, but I didn't ask--I just had water. I found out about Galloway's by reading several glowing recommendations for the place on Chowhound, and I can only say thank you to the intrepid souls who found this place and let me know about it. It's one of my new favorites. I will be going back regularly. read more

This place is great! The employees are very courteous and friendly, the soul food is very affordable and delicious, and service is quite fast. With me was this guy from Italy who wanted to try all types of American food. So I searched for a nearby soul food place, and this place came up. He said he really liked the grits and the grilled cheese. I ordered the sausage, egg, and cheese tacos. They were more like burritos but they hit the spot all the same. The rotating menu is something new to me, but I like it. It would keep things fresh and encourage you to try something new. There are a few things that are consistent (like eggs, cheese, bacon, pancakes, and waffles), so if you are a creature of habit, then you'll find something you'd like. Between the two of us, my friend and I only paid a little over $10, a huge plus since a lot of the places I've eaten in Austin so far end up costing that much for one person. The food here is excellent. Stick to your ribs soul food that will satisfy your hunger. They have a revolving menu that changes everyday. Smothered pork chops fried or roasted chicken, salmon croquettes, and chili mac and cheese are a few of their entrees. They have all the sides: collard greens, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, and whatever else they may have that day. I would have drove right past this place but I'm lucky to have had it brought to me by a friend. What a friend! I love this food it was delicious. I had the meatloaf, cabbage and sweet potato's and I have to say I have never bought a plate that while eating it I made so many ummmm and ahhhhhs.
