As luck would have it, they had two sections of their menu with 50% items. Score! Even without the 50% discount, their prices are competitive. The jerk chicken taco...fire...real fire yet so delicious. The combination of finely cut vegetables and the boldness of the jerk chicken...a winning combination! I also got a phatty...very similar to an empanada and Jamaican meat pie married together. The phatty was bursting with flavor in every bite. It felt like a food bomb in your mouth. The rum cake is one of their top selling items, so had to try it. The cake was not too soggy or laden with rum, so quite delicious. In addition, they have vegan options such as the jackfruit plate. The vibe is welcoming and chill. The restaurant has a laid-back "don't worry, be happy" persona. The staff was super friendly and helpful. I felt like I was visiting my favorite family members. Visited here during SXSW and had such a filling meal! Jerk Chicken plate with a side of sweet potatoes, mac, a dos equis. Price seemed fair and when it came out I was blown away by the portions! The location is nicely downtown and had plenty of seating. This was a special event with some hip hop so the setting was nice as we got the cooshy couch area in the corner. This place also had a vending machine with Labubus and a awesome set of Pokemon hats. I even added on some yellow habanero sauce which gave the plate a really strong kick. I swear I would't be able to finish the entire jerk chicken but it was SO good and I hadn't eaten all day so the entire meal was gone by the end. Came on a Saturday evening around 6:30 with a group of 6. This is an order first then sit down and food will be brought to you. They had r&b and hip hop music playing and also sell THC products. They also have cards and a few games available to play at your table. The food is brought in to go containers, which is helpful for if you don't finish. The portion sizes are pretty nice. Flavor wise the food was good, I can always advocate for even deeper, ricer flavors, but I enjoyed it my plate a can imagine coming back or ordering to go on days when I work downtown. I do wish they offered Jamaican or Caribbean owned hot sauces / pepper sauces for the side. I can imagine on a theme night like r&b night or brunch that it can get popping in there. I ordered through DoorDash so I can't speak in the service but the food was AMAZING!!! The greens had a slight sweet to them that I don't normally like but they were cooked perfectly so I didn't mind, they weren't over cooked like most places. The mac was nice and cheesy more creamy than I like (I'm a weirdo who prefers a drier mac lol baked a lil harder) but these still slapped. And the goat was the star of the plate! Upon entering it has that Jamaican decor which was nice to see. There is counter ordering and the order taker was so knowledgeable with the menu and had plenty of personality. There were three of us and we ordered the Jerk Oxtails and Jerk Chicken that came with Jollof Rice, Sweet Potatoes and Greens, another order with Chicken and Jollof Rice, Greens and Sweet Potato also, an order of Rasta Pasta with Jerk Oxtails. Our food was served heat hot and packed with lots of Jamaican Flavor and oh so sendeand prepared with lots of love. Found this place close by, was craving curry chicken which was really great. Very flavorful and tender, side were really tasty as well. The jerk chicken was a bit basic but not so bad. This place was so delicious and such a vibe. We stopped in for lunch and they happen to have some different specials which we enjoyed, including money off tacos as well as their Jamaican patties. I tried the patties as well as tacos, along with one of their custom mix bowls, which comes with your choices, meat or vegetable and rice or another type of base. Everything I ate was really good and flavorful. I also tried their signature trap juice along with a different cocktail while there and it was very yummy. I was excited to try this place out, but unfortunately my first impression was underwhelming. I tried the beef phatty and it didn't give was I was hoping for. So I didn't get an actual meal, which is the only reason why I will go back and give it another try but I was very disappointed with my encounter. So I got the oxtail phatty and the Yucca fries. I enjoy the Yucca fries. They were hot and they were fresh. I do like the sauces that they have there. They have a really nice scotch bonnet sauce . Highly recommend. My real disappointment was in the phatty, is kind of like a patty/empanada and it wasn't that enjoyable. It was OK but not worth the price. So I have to go back and get like an oxtail plate and see if that can live up to the hype. We stopped here for a late dinner after an ACL Live at the Moody show. It was great. The atmosphere was colorful & fun with neon signs & rainbow tiles & funky booths & chandeliers. The menu was varied, so it was hard to choose but I had the vegetarian chickpea curry & my date had chicken curry. We had side salad & sweet potato sides & chocolate cake dessert. We had a very interesting experience here while going to a Sunday drag brunch. This restaurant sits on the first floor while the event takes place upstairs. The service was lackluster as we asked for recommendations and received pretty bad ones. Instead we went with the empanadas and yuca fries. They were delicious but wow those empanadas are small. I walked in the rain when it was flooding for this and unfortunately, it was not too impressive. I was very excited to try this place out since it is one of the few caribbean restaurants. OXTAIL PLATE: Slow cooked oxtail with a side of plantians and mac and cheese. The oxtail was soft, but a lot of my plate was bone (aka less meat). The plantains and mac and cheese were good. The food is good, but not very memorable. Nothing to write home about and underwhelming in my opinion. I would consider trying it again though to give it a second try! Beef was labelled chicken, ordered a jackfruit and got a beans and plantain version ‍ 3. $33 untrimmed ox tail. I don't care it cost $33 but too too many fatty layers to the meat. Flavor was good though once you bypassed the gelatinous layer 4.à la carte jerk quarter was not as flavorful as the normal jerk chicken plate chicken. Sounds odd i know, but it was something different about it vs the normal. Not in a bad way but it wasnt better than the normal chicken. So I'm going to pull 2.5 stars from the 5 and give 3 bc there isn't a .5 on yelp (somebody fix this please) This is really me being a little softhearted bc I love the spirit, vibe and food at this place and I want to see it thrive. Love this place. Food and atmosphere reminded me of a place in my home town in Ohio. Trust me this is it!

Was in the mood for jerk chicken and the place that I normally order it from was not taking orders so went with this ghost kitchen. You get a drumstick and thigh with plantains and rice. I picked the cabbage as my side. You don't get a side of curry sauce but you can order a portion for extra. The sides are generous. The jerk is a little more sweet and not as spicy as my typical place. I assume this is a different style. It was interesting sauce because you taste hints of raisin or plum in the sauce. The rice also had a nice coconut-y flavor so I definitely felt Caribbean influences. I do wish it was more spicy since I didn't get that hot lip after effect I was craving. Saw this place on Tik Tok and my wife and I have been talking about coming. We tried a Caribbean restaurant In Pflugerville, so our expectations were high. Let's just say I've already forgotten the other place. I had the Jerk Chicken, with Jollof rice, a salad and collard greens with turkey. My wife had the Oxtails with Jollof rice, Mac and cheese, and sweet potatoes. Everything was good, tasted really authentic. The restaurant recently opened and the owner infuses Jamaican dishes with Caribbean, Central American, and West African flavors. My friend and I split a plate of curry chickpeas over joloff rice with sides of tostones and cabbage, and everything was phenomenal. We also tried an oxtail phatty and it was amazing. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well cooked, and the portions were generous- we split a plate and still had enough leftover for a third meal. The Caribbean food stand at the Cuatro Gato bar on Colorado Street. Cuatro Gato used to have Venezuelan food. Now they have Caribbean food. I have no idea how the old Veneuzuelan stand was ... But Traphouse is absolutely positively outstanding. * * * A lot of the food served at "Sixth Street" bars is really really mediocre. The hamburgers at Casino El Camino are legendary. But in general, food stands and food trucks serve overpriced lousy stuff to people too drunk or too hungry to care. The food trucks at the corner of Red River and Sixth are an abomination. * * * Traphouse, in contrast, is in the circle of the saints - along with the aforementioned Casino El Camino. Most of the menu are Caribbean rarities it is hard to find elsewhere in Austin. Yeah, Trinidadian food trucks exist in some of the distant corners of our city if you go looking for them. But no one will confuse Austin with Miami as a source of great Island food. Traphouse in contrast, is first rate. * * * I dared to go boring and got macaroni and cheese. Macaroni and cheese at Traphouse is definitely positively NOT boring. Never mind the fact that the actual mac and cheese is very high quality ... Really good Ziti with an unusual mild cheese mix I could not identify. Hearty comforting fare. Traphouse serves four Island hot sauces on the counter to go with everything. I put Mabel's Hot Sauce on my mac and cheese. OH MY GOD Mabel's took that otherwise solid comforting macaroni and cheese and turned it into the edgiest most interesting dish ever. Mabel's is a Trinidadian food company that makes everything. You want mayo? They got it. You want spiced beans in a can? They got it. Etc. Etc. Their hot sauce is not even the most famous food product they sell. (It is not the equivalent say of Heinz Ketchup.) But Mabel's hot sauce is an eye opening revelation. My mac and cheese was already good. But the Mabel's made this a dish to remember totally. * * * I don't think much of Cuatro Gato as a bar. But Trap House makes a trip to Cuatro Gato an interesting proposition. After you are finished, you can go dancing next door at the eminently worthwhile Coconut Club.
