While it may sound sketch, I promise Traphouse ATX is anything but. You could also call it Trap House Caribbean & Seafood, or THC Seafood for short, but I'm not convinced that's an improvement. Names aside, it's a real hidden gem that no one seems to be talking about. Caribbean food is tough to find on the mainland, let alone vegan options. That's why it's a distinct thrill to see a meatless Jerk Jackfruit Plate on this menu, complete with dairy-free coconut rice and two sides of your choice. First, we need to talk about the jackfruit. These flavors are BOLD, HOT, and NOT messing around. It's got all the spice and nuance you'd crave for an authentic taste of the islands, minus the meat. It's also perfectly cooked, no stringy, woody texture here; they're doing it right. For sides, I'd implore you to try the sauteed cabbage and fried sweet plantain as I did, providing the perfect contrast to the main. Respectively tender-crisp and almost custard-like, each one is worthy of a separate order, too. Operating out of Cuatro Gato for all your bar-hopping needs and Ghostline Kitchens for direct delivery, it's a distinct pleasure to see a plant-based dish with genuine island flare readily available throughout Austin proper. read more

The food is ok. Not bad but nothing to write home to. I DoorDashed it--maybe it was an off day but I don't really think so. The jerk chicken tasted like oven baked chicken with barbecue sauce on it. Very underwhelming. The greens were the best part--they also had jerk season/sauce which was very unique. Overall, not impressed but not entirely disappointed. Just expected more for the price. Eating at this place while being raised and growing up with Jamaican's was an insult!!! The chicken was undercooked and the shrimp were small, the jerk sauce wasn't a real jerk sauce! TikTok hyped this place up and I was completely let down!! HOWEVER the trap house ice was delicious along with the peas and rice!!! Not to mention it was hot af in there! No fans, no a/c. read more

Food was kinda cold, server was great she really went above and beyond to accommodate us and that was great. The drinks bar needs a little more TLC more options to choice from. Came here for lunch around 3 and ordered the oxtail plate with coconut rice and mac and cheese and plantains as my side. Also ordered brown stew chicken and a beef patty. Everything was really good! The oxtails were so tender and the gravy was so flavorful. The plantains were nice although I don't think anyone can really mess up plantains. The mac and cheese was good, but I do think the pasta was overcooked. It was a little too soft. The brown stew chicken was also sooo good! The chicken was soft and the gravy was amazing. The beef patty was perfect. The crust was so flaky and was definitely my favorite part of it. We liked the patty so much we ordered another one. The employees were nice. The cashier said if I gave them a review on google we could get a free patty so I decided to try the chicken one this time. The crust was different, sadly. I had a jerk chicken taco which was delicious and an asada taco which was ok. Service was ok, not great not horrible. The music was upbeat and it appeared clean. I would go back for the jerk chicken taco but I'd probably get it to go. It wasn't a bad experience and it wasn't a great experience. It just wasn't inviting. read more

Ordered from doordash a bit after midnight so I'm going to assume they just put something together to get an order out. Chicken take like it was cooked in the oven the skin was still fatty and horribly chewy (almost inedible). The jerk sauce was interesting wasn't bad but left wanting more. Basic Mac n cheese. The coconut rice and peas !! Hardly close to authentic, used basmati rice and peas that wasn't ready. The taste was bland. Based on the photos here there is no consistency in rice they use. The plantains was good. The portions was good. I feel played as the doordash rate was high and this is what I got. Smh read more

I love this place, I go every time I'm in Austin. The food is delicious. I usually get a plate but this time I also got a phatty/patty and it was so good, it came with a delicious cilantro sauce. I'm surprised it's not packed every time I go there. It should be! The signage isn't great but it's a big yellow building. Go find it, it's worth it! read more

Went here for lunch shortly after they opened up so parking was really not an issue for me. I was able to get something in front of the building but it definitely is not easy to get parking in that area. They have lunch special where you can pack a bowl with various things and so I just went with whatever the recommendation was. So it was the shredded pork with the coconut rice and just loaded with everything. All the veggies, all the cheese and the trap sauce and the mojo sauce which I really enjoyed and it was a really good portion for the price. They also have half price fatties and that was a really good deal because I don't know if I'd really want to pay full price considering how small they were but everything I got was really good. I got one of everything except for the black bean and I enjoyed them all. The oxtail was probably maybe one of my favorites along with a jackfruit. I can't say what it is late at night, but during lunch time it was fine. It was a nice vibe. We had really friendly service. It does take a while to get your food made because I think they make everything from scratch, but I appreciate having something different in the downtown area and their food is delicious. read more

Food: 5/5 TraphouseATX does the the best late night Caribbean in the City. Full stop. The Jerk Chicken with Mac and Cheese was outstanding. Free refills of Trap Juice was unbelievable, sugary, and truly encapsulated everything I wanted from a quick Jamaican bite. Service: 5/5 Incredibly friendly, order at the counter, and quick out of the kitchen. They were a little short staffed, but this didn't seem to impact their speed at all. Our cashier/waiter/busser was nearly sprinting from behind the bar to every table, but he was seamless and a true expert. Environment: 5/5 Dark, vibey, and mysterious. You'd easily walk right past the front door of this place, and even find yourself second guessing if this is the right spot after walking in the door. A must stop spot in Austin, the best Caribbean food in the city and it's locally owned and operated! Great and friendly service. Super cute chill space to dine in and dance. Went in to find out this is a ghost kitchen location. Which is no problem. We ordered our food online. Ran into a minor hiccup. Though the item was labeled jerk jackfruit plate the description said chicken. So we called to really make sure we were getting jackfruit and no chicken. Also let them know about the error on the website. I went ahead and got 4 different phattys 2 vegan 2 meat as I was buying 2 strictly for me and 2 strictly for my spouse. They're the reason why this review is 4 instead of 5 stars. No one in the kitchen bother to label which is which. They were all in their own bags which was great. But a nice V on the vegan ones would have been such s nice touch. Before we can even eat we had to sit down and tear each one apart to make sure the right person was getting the right one. They're also much smaller than anticipated. Luckily I got these during their happy hour sale. But original price for these is $6. $6 for something that small?? Is crazy. The taste was there and the sauce they come with is pretty good. But I personally wouldn't get those again just due to size and price. The jackfruit plate was really good. Super spicy to the point we had to keep stopping from eating it which is fine. I love spicy. Very flavorful and really good. I really enjoyed the plate. They have a great happy hour starting at 11 where I had two delicious tacos- one a vegan jerk jackfruit and a chicken taco. I was full and loved it. I love that this place is open late at night! The jerk chicken and tacos are amazing! I love the sauce that comes with the fries as well. Been waiting to try this place and so glad i got to as they were part of the savory farmers market in south austin. The jerk chicken was some of the best I've had i could not stop eating the mean fall off the bone with the rich flavors of the sauces and seasoning. The empanada Patties we're also decadent. Filled with spiced and tasty meat, fried to perfection in vegan dough, you can't go wrong. Can't wait to be back (also amazing restaurant name and all the dishes) read more

Was in town for UT game decided to stop by around 930 pm. The vibe was great there was a live DJ. The young lady in the register was VERYheloful. She told us about the popular items, her faves and was realistic with food wait time. Everything came out in about 15 min. The food was fresh, well seasoned, great spice level as well. We had the curry chicken and curry goat with cabbage and plantain as our sides with jungle juice ( refreshing). Would recommend if in Austin looking for Caribbean try this place. read more

Sure they know the plates name and what is used to make it, but they couldn't tell us what made it a "Guyanese Roti". Was it a bussup shut? Was it dosti? They had no idea. We sent the jerk chicken back so we could get it cut up into some smaller pieces so we could share it, and the kitchen refused. Which was a little annoying, but what was more annoying was that it took them over 10 minutes to just say no. The staff here is not trained to deal with some real deal Trinis who are gonna rib you and ask questions about the food. *Drinks- We enjoyed all the drinks we had! They were all delicious and we liked that they at least used some Caribbean ingredients in them. The beer section is lacking heavily though. To only offer red stripe as the Caribbean beer is very disappointing, especially since Carib and Stag are sold here in the states. The excuse of it being "too expensive" doesn't sit well when I can go to total wine down the road and get it. *Food- The most controversial part of our meal. We had the flan and tres leches, and both were delicious. If you want a little something sweet, I'd recommend the flan. It was almost a cheesecake texture and the jam it came with complimented that extremely well. Wasn't too sweet and it was a great end to the meal. TLDR; The food is okay, but at this price it's not worth it. It's not true enough to Caribbean food as we would have liked. If they're playing to "local" tastes, they should stop and serve dishes with the spice, seasonings, and strong flavor that is so synonymous with Caribbean food. I wouldn't come back, nor would I recommend it, especially charging $28 for a curry with 4 pieces of meat, 5 potatoes, and 3 pieces of chana. If you do come; get a drink, get the wild boar and roti, get the flan, and maybe grab a shirt that says "jerk your heart out" on your way out.

Overall I liked it! The oxtail was tender and delicious, the sauce had a nice mix of smoke, sweetness, and a tiny bit of heat. For a regular (as opposed to their large) size plate it felt like a good amount of oxtail I thought based on the description the gungo rice would have a more prominent coconut taste but it was pretty typical Jamaican peas and rice. We decided to eat at Bikkle, close to the University of Texas at Austin on Guadalupe Street. Bikkle is known for its authentic Jamaican cuisine such as jerk chicken, oxtails (hard to find anywhere anymore) and curry goat. Between the four of us, we ordered jerk chicken, curry goat, and curry chicken. We all went for red beans and rice with cabbage. All dishes came with plantain, which is one of my favorites. Having been to Jamaica a couple of times, I can report out that this food is authentic! The flavors were swirls of goodness in every bite. The food was also warm when served. We also ordered jerk chicken egg rolls. Just think about that concept for a minute. The jerk chicken egg rolls were exceptionally good. The highlight for me was the curry goat. First, you do not find goats on many menus. The curry goat was tender and oh so flavorful. Some pieces had associated fat. All in all, everyone was happy with their meals. During our dinner, only one person was serving customers. She was super friendly and personable. I must think she was overworked as the stream of customers came in. Now for the décor...if you walked in and looked only at the counter, you would have thought it was a "to go" restaurant only as many "to go" containers were stacked high on the counter. Only one other couple sat down and ate in the restaurants and most folks were picking up their food to go. Even the people eating inside the restaurant were served in "to go" containers. The inside is minimalist with no ornate furnishings and yellow walls, projecting a Caribbean feel. Recommend adding a bit more Jamaican artifacts such palm trees, Jamaican flag, surfboard, etc. It would be a great spot for students, friend meet ups and a causal date night... Bikkle Jamaican Restaurant it was great and represented authentic Jamaican food well! We definitely will be returning.

I should call this dish the most flavorful dish I've ever had. Every item on my plate had a lot of flavor. The rice alone should have its own spot on the menu. It's not always that you find a place that puts as much effort into the rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains as they put into the oxtails. But this place did. This was the real rice and peas that go with oxtails, not some made-up version. The plantains were highly favored; they weren't mushy, they had a firmness and a sweet and savory taste. Now the hostess wasn't friendly at all. I'm still wondering what kind of interaction that was. Of course, I was asking her about the menu, and she just stared at me. It was the strangest thing. To make sure this was happening, I brought up the other location, and she stared, her head tilted. She honestly mumbled one word, and I really don't know what that could have been. So that made me feel uncomfortable.
