I will never recommend HLI!
They, or certainly their crew boss Carlos, are deeply unethical.
They took advantage of my 92-year-old father. He has his faculties, but doesn't hear well, processes slower than he used to, and isn't as strong psychologically as he used to be. The crew boss, Carlos, exploited that to make money off him.
Carlos approached my father, offered to trim a small oak for $250. Dad said OK, with my agreement.
Carlos suggested they also remove a 35 foot palm next to the house, for $2300. My father and I talked about it and decided to wait, so we could get bids before a sizable expenditure like that. I then saw a guy climbing the palm with a chain saw and told him to stop. He said "Really?" I said "Yes, really", and said we did not authorize cutting it down, and to get down.
A while later I heard the chain saw fire up, and ran outside to see the guy cutting the palm. I yelled at him, saying "I said NO!", and he said my father had approved it. This was strange, because my father and I make these decisions together. I ran over to where Carlos and my dad were, and asked my father why he OK'd it. He said Carlos had led him to believe that I had OK'd it, so he had agreed to go along with it. I said I absolutely had not approved it, and had told them NO, in no uncertain terms. Carlos never denied it, either.
They dropped the tree into the neighbors' yard, leaving a long, 3" deep depression in their lawn, and broke the branches on one side of their crape myrtle tree, so it is now lopsided. I asked Carlos why he thought it was OK to do that without their permission, and he said he had their permission. I called him a liar to his face, because I had talked to them, and knew the truth. He finally admitted he had not gotten their permission.
My father was so distressed, he just wanted the situation over, and paid them the full $2300 for the palm and $250 for the oak. I advocated paying them $1000 total, and if HLI wanted to go to court, I would have enjoyed telling the judge what they had done. But Dad was upset, and just wanted it to end.
HLI took advantage of a 92-year-old man who is feeling the effects of his advanced years ,and by lying and deceiving, made a good chunk of money off him.
I called HLI and only got an answering machine. So I wrote HLI a letter about this, and have received no reply.
