**Visited 10/12/14 but had duplicate Yelp accounts, so am trying to consolidate them here!**
I was more than dismayed when the only dim sum place near north Bothell, Zen Garden in Mill Creek, went out of business a time back (maybe early 2013?). I learned just today that it reopened as Hong Kong Dim Sum off 164th under new ownership but with the same chef and menu. So my 12yo foodie son and I headed off to check it out around 3pm on a Saturday.
Located in a strip mall and considerably smaller than the old location (which seemed like a waste of space anyway because it was never full), we arrived and were immediately seated. There were 3 other large tables that were full of people who looked to be of Asian descent, which I usually take to be a good sign. The atmosphere is less cozy that the prior location (and the curtains are awful), but we were there for the food.
We ordered the pork soup dumplings (which were on special), steamed prawn dumplings, another order of special shrimp dumplings (we like shrimp dumplings!), pan-fried pork bun, radish cakes, and a plate of broccoli.
The soup dumplings were very good. We'd never had them before so the hostess showed us what to do in terms of holding them on a soup spoon, poking them with a chopstick, then enjoying the broth and finally eating what's left. Very fun for my son, and the broth was deliciously flavorful, so probably not bouillon from a cube. The basket came with 6, we ate 4, and by the time we went back to have another one, the fun was over and the broth had absorbed into the pastry. Lesson learned -- eat them fast!
The steamed prawn dumplings were nothing to write home about -- they were as good as we expected, cooked perfectly, the shrimp mixture inside was fine. Came in a basket of 4. This is a staple of ours so we will order again.
The special shrimp dumpling was probably my favorite. First, they were beautiful! They came wrapped in a light green rice wrap tied at the top with a thin strip of seaweed, then topped with a pinch of roe. I almost hated to eat them, but they were very good and tasted richer than the plain steamed prawn dumplings, but maybe it was my imagination because they were so pretty. We will definitely order these again!
The pan-fried pork bun was also nothing to write home about and was as good as we expected. My son liked them because they were the only thing we ordered that had a dough instead of a rice paper enclosure. Variety, you know!
The radish cakes at Zen Garden were always a favorite of mine and these are exactly the same so they did not disappoint. They are cut into 2"x3" rectangles, are about 1/2" thick, and lightly crispy on the outside. I've had them several other places and never like them as much as these. It's a staple of mine!
Finally, the Chinese broccoli was perfectly steamed (I like mine a bit crunchy), beautifully green, abundant, and not topped with a bunch of oil. They served it with a side of oyster sauce that truly was maybe only a tablespoon and it was too thick to pour even though it was warm. I was pretty confused by that and should have asked for more but didn't. It was certainly not enough to serve with so much broccoli even if it could have been easily poured.
We ended up spending just under $30 and lots of leftovers so I think the value was good. The service was friendly, water always full, no long wait for anything we ordered. They were not doing cart service when we were there but it sounds like others have said they do offer it sometimes. We just ordered off the dim sum menu and I was glad to see the same items I enjoyed at Zen Garden were still there.
Next time I will want to try either the Szechuan style green beans or the mustard greens with garlic sauce rather than the broccoli. And one of my favorite dishes they serve is the steamed cuttlefish in curry sauce (so, SOOOOO good if you like squid!), but I couldn't talk my 12yo into it this time.
Overall, I was glad to hear they are back and not too far from the old location. We will be back!
