But I feel like future customers should be aware of the following. - It took 10-15 minutes before I was asked if I wanted a beverage. - The chef was taking table orders over my orders, leaving me with nothing in front of me except their seaweed salad. - The chef asked me only twice within a span of 20-30 minutes what I wanted. - Once I finally received the orders I put in, the sushi did not match anything that was stated on the menu. There were ingredients missing and it was prepared SLOPPY. - The rice was not prepared properly. So it was falling apart all over the bar in front of me. If you're a sushi snob, you generally should be avoiding sushi in Reno entirely--it's unlikely that you're going to get the quality and flavor out of the fish that you're expecting. The menu is significantly smaller than you might be expecting given Reno standards, but don't even worry about the menu. Sit at the bar, tell the chefs what you like, and let them curate a sushi experience for you. They'll keep making it as long as you're sitting there, so give them honest feedback and enjoy. I have very few sushi places I trust for consistency these days. Many places have cleaning standard issues or freshness problems. Sushi is a very hard master. I will always go to Hinoki when invited. They are clean and the fish is amazingly fresh and crisp. The menu is somewhat small if you are used to Reno bling places...but that is because the chefs like to get creative for you if you ask or if they feel comfortable with you. I like salmon and lemon and creamy sauces mixed together. They have made me many very unique and awesome rolls that I can only get if this or that chef is there. That makes for a very special experience. The iced tea is awesome...not sure why! The space is somewhat in an industrial type of area so it will make you feel a bit odd at first. But it is big and open and that means that I can get my butt out the door when I am ready to roll out! It is worth the drive! read more

Ok folks, I'm going to preface this by saying that during my time living in Reno, I've eaten at a lot of AYCE sushi places, as well as in other places I've lived, so I think I can give an objective review lol! Hubby and I decided to give this place a try today, even though I am always so skeptical about trying new AYCE sushi places and then ending up disappointed. Having lunch here was the best decision I made today lol! First, the service was outstanding! Right when we walked in, we were greeted and seated immediately at the sushi bar, as we requested. Throughout our meal, our waitress kept refilling our drinks and removing our used sushi plates. She was super nice and attentive! Next, the sushi chef who made our rolls was named Robert (he works there Sunday & Monday). He was amazing! Hand rolls were perfect...just the right amount of rice in ratio to the other ingredients. The long rolls were also made with care and presented beautifully. He was attentive to our requests and very timely in making what we ordered. Definitely a great sushi chef! Lastly, the sushi was fresh and delicious! We had a variety of hand rolls, long rolls, and nigiri. All of it was super tasty! We loved every single thing we ordered, and the price was reasonable ($19.99 for lunch, 24.99 for dinner). We will definitely be going back!! read more

I honestly think this might be one of the best sushi places in Reno. The rolls are unique, well put together and delicious. The namesake roll Hinoki is amazing. I also got the Mermaid roll, vegetarian Godzilla, R&B, tofu skin nigiri and veggie tempura. All of the rolls I liked with one exception, however that's probably just from preference. The appetizers and desserts are delicious as well. My favorites are the tempura banana, agedashi tofu and veggie tempura. They also have a pretty good selection of vegetarian rolls, which is one of the reasons why I come back! The lunch AYCE is only $20 and the dinner is $25. Definitely reasonable pricing, as well as good service, especially at the bar. read more

Salmon was some of the most fresh I have had, the nigiri rice portions were proper and the flavors and creative plates the chefs made was simply inspiring. I like to go with others who have the "in" or have been there a few times already. Robert S fits the criteria since in the first month Hinoki has been open he has been there at least six times. I have to totally agree with Robert's philosophy and sit at the bar and get to know the chef creating your sushi masterpieces. We sat at Gerson's station (he is one of the partner/owners). Robert said to just let him send out dishes. So Gerson asked if there were any allergies or preferences not to have- mine were no raw onions and not excessively spicy. And the adventure was on....... So many great pieces of fresh nigiri on small pieces of flavorful rice began appearing. Intermixed with smaller version long rolls so we could check out all the various combinations and flavors. There were a few rolls very unique to Hinoki and a couple of new fabulous sauces I fell in love with. Check out the pictures- I decided not to post everything we had because so tried so much, but you can see how wonderful the bites are. I had told Robert earlier that I felt like I needed a wow dinner. And Hinoki supplied it. Several dishes lit up the palate with fresh, bright and unique flavors. A couple of dishes were so exciting they made my skin tingle. No question about it- I'll be returning, sitting at the bar and hanging out with any of their great friendly chefs. read more

I would give zero stars if I could because the service was atrocious. We did get seated right away and the food was good and fast, But that was all ruined by the service. We didn't get refills on our water until the very end of our meal when she asked us if we wanted dessert. After dessert, our patience had already run thin, she took forever to collect the check. So my problem is that I am allergic to seafood, but I still like my share of sushi. The veggie rolls I usually get around town are just simple cucumber or avocado rolls, and maybe one specialty veggie roll. Sometimes though, I get in a fuss with the chef because they don't want to accommodate my food allergies and clean their utensils before serving me (which I understand is hard to do at times, but I am very allergic to fish). At Hinoki, not only did David, our sushi chef, not think twice about using newly cleaned utensils to make my sushi, but he made me very special vegetarian rolls that were absolutely delicious. It was the best and fanciest sushi I've ever had. Being allergic to seafood, this has never happened before and it made my sushi experience that much better. Do yourself a favor and try Hinoki. Wish we were aware this was an all you can eat place. By default any AYCE sushi restaurant be a 6/10 at best no matter where you go in the country. Found this out after we sat down but decided to just give it a shot and get à la carte. Picked a few nigiris, one roll and one entree. Nigiri and the roll were not bad but the entrée (teriyaki beef) came with a tiny scoop of dry jasmine rice, super dry beef (dry chicken would've been worse so luckily we just had to deal with dry beef). Needed more rice since meat to rice ratio was off and that cost $1.50 extra but at least it was a fresh scoop of rice. Salade was not bad. Miso soup was the cheaper dry mix type, wasabi was waxy, pickled ginger so sweet that I decided to skip dessert for the day. 2 stars because the place is inexpensive and probably the best sushi place in the area for sure. read more

Good sushi. They offer a wide range of Nigiri and rolls, with lots of interesting combinations. Their service is good, and all employees were respectful in regards to COVID. "All you can eat" was fairly priced given the current economic climate. The interior is an industrial open style, which isn't my personal favorite because it offers very little privacy or intimacy. Hinoki Sushi may be the newest kid on the AYCE sushi block, but its staff work together like a well-oiled machine. Comprised of Reno sushi veterans, this team is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. The menu is much shorter than some others in town, but it's intended as a starting point. If you tell the chef the kinds of things you like--and don't like--they'll put together custom creations just for you. I was actually a bit startled by how quickly our appetizers arrived at the table. I might have suspected the baked mussels had been prepared in advance, if not for the fact they weren't overcooked and were the perfect temperature. Unlike some places that have a limit on appetizers, these folks keep 'em coming in rapid order. In addition to the shellfish we enjoyed cucumber salad, miso soup, gyoza, yakiton, and agedashi, a traditional Japanese dish of deep-fried tofu served in a shallow bath of tentsuyu broth. Every app was delicious and some commanded a repeat order. Moving on to nigiri, I ordered Cajun tuna, seared tuna, yellowtail, cooked and raw scallop, fresh and smoked salmon, red snapper, fresh water eel, and octopus. The fish-to-rice ratio was excellent, the rice held together quite well, and the flavor and texture of the fish was very good. Of particular note, the raw scallop and octopus were probably among the best preparations of either I've had in Reno. I ate too much of both. My wife and daughter took the lead on ordering long rolls. Half-size rolls are available--enabling us to try a broader range of flavors--tightly rolled and sliced to perfect bite-sized morsels. The house Hinoki roll combined crystal shrimp with scallop, crab mix, cajun tuna, basil and balsamic sauces, garnished with a fan of tempura-fried noodles. It was very pretty, but the heavily-spiced tuna overpowered the other flavors just a bit. A little of that stuff goes a long way. The Golden Gate was a bit more subtle, with cucumber, crystal shrimp, lemon, salmon, ponzu sauce, and a drop of chili sauce on each bite. Quite nice. A little bolder was the Ceviche roll, featuring crab, salmon, lemon, yellowtail, avocado, red onion, cilantro, jalapeno, and sauce. Perhaps one of the more interesting rolls, the Workout involved seared beef sirloin, spinach, asparagus, spicy tuna, wasabi mayo, teriyaki sauce, and scallion. The combination worked surprisingly well, though it wasn't necessarily our favorite. Next up, a spicy pair of rolls. The Casanova's mix of cream cheese, mango, tempura jalapeno, crystal shrimp, lemon, salmon, lemon honey sauce, and dusting of togarashi--a spice blend of seven ingredients--had a lot of flavors competing for attention. Even more demanding, the Playboy mixed cream cheese, white onion, tempura shrimp, avocado, red snapper, jalapeno, ponzu and habanero sauces into one of the spiciest rolls I've tasted. No wasabi needed with this hottie. A simple Mermaid roll of cream cheese, spicy crab, tempura shrimp, and avocado was a welcome break from the heat. Then things took a sweet turn with the Yoyo's blend of crystal shrimp, lemon, mango, crab, seared scallop, mango and teriyaki sauces. Sweeter still, the Tundra's mashup of mango, tempura shrimp, seared salmon, spicy crab, macadamia, honey mustard, balsamic and teriyaki sauces was too rich for me, but the ladies loved it. Rounding out my meal with a favorite hand roll, a nori cone of crystal shrimp, cooked scallop, avocado, and wasabi mayo really hit the spot. Our meal provided something enjoyable for everyone and the service was exceptional. At first glance the menu may seem a bit brief, but the devil--as they say--is in the details. read more

Usually the food here has great presentation and great customer service. This past visit was lacking in both customer service and presentation. I went in around lunch to get the lunch combo special that they offer, 2 rolls plus an appetizer. I got the Mountain and the Samari plus a Yakiton. The Yakiton was great! That's one of my favorite items at any sushi restaurant. The rolls were.... sloppily put together. I couldn't even recognize one of the rolls and had to ask to make sure it was correct. When I showed it to the gentleman to ask if it was the Samari, he didn't seem fazed that the roll was haphazardly put into the container. It didn't even look appetizing, but I still ate it since I was on lunch and didn't have time to go anywhere else to get some food. Not sure I would recommend it to anyone since the consistency is lacking here. Also, the amount of soy sauce they give you for 2 rolls is ridiculous. They give you a couple teaspoons of soy sauce. I understand trying to save money in these trying times, but at least fill the cup up to half full if you're just going to give people 1 of those cups for 2 rolls.
