The food here is pretty tasty. Though I will agree with the other reviewers that you should come here for the buffet lunch. You'll get more value then. I had the tandori chicken, which was moist (always a good thing, dry chicken is terrible). The naan bread was fresh from the kitchen and piping hot. I am glad that it wasn't under a heating lamp of sadness (I love calling it that... haha). Anyway, I did try the lassi. It was my first time trying it. I wasn't a huge fan, but it wasn't terrible. It's tart (as expected), but I thought it would be sweeter. I'm definitely open to trying it again. If you're looking for a cheap, tasty lunch spot, Himalayan Cafe should be an option to consider! read more

I had the: Samosa chaat Vegetable pakora Saag paneer (the spinach with cheese cubes) Vegetable korma Mint chutney Mango chutney Himalayan chopped salad Kheer Mango lassi The samosas were too hard to easily chew, but the bed of garbanzo beans, tomatoes, and veggies were good. The vegetable pakoras were very red and delicious. The saag paneer and vegetable korma were underwhelming and lacked flavor. The himalayan chopped salad was the worst salad I've ever tasted. It was lettuce, cucumbers, and a light lemon-looking dressing. That's it. The dressing was so plain and odorless it tasted like water. And this was at least $8. The kheer was okay. I found a huge cardamom? (long oval spice) pod in my kheer, and it tasted brittle, dry, and bitter in my mouth. I had to spit it out. I don't know how kheer is cooked but I never found nearly raw or undercooked cardamom pods in my rice pudding before. The mint chutney was a little underspiced but the mango chutney was sweet and delicious. The mango lassi was the best part of this restaurant. It was sweet and creamy and tasted better than most mango lassi I've had before. On the plus side the to-go orders we took after eating here was still hot after we brought it back. They wrapped the boxes and containers in plastic wrap so the food was very warm. My relatives and me don't plan on coming back here. read more

Himalayan? Never tried it before, but I discovered it is very similar to Indian food with Himalayan spices. Saag Paneer, Fish Tikka and an amazing mushroom and peas dish turned out to be good choices accompanied by Garlic Naan and Basmati Rice. The only miss for me was the raita... Which was a bit watery and too sweet for my taste. The service was exceptionally friendly and thoughtful, to the point where my wife and I never had our water less than 2 sips away from another refill. Have always wanted to try this place and so six days ago I had lunch here with my boyfriend. They had a 10 dollar buffet but we decided not to since we didn't really want anything that was offered on the buffet - so instead we each order separate entrees. We had the Cheese Pakauda - Cheese with battered chickpea flour served with a sweet bbq-tasting sauce. It was okay - not super tasty and not sure will order again. However the entrees - Lamb Vindaloo and Lamb Sekuwa was very good. I especially liked the Lamb Vindaloo because the sauce was very creamy and flavorful - great for dipping the Naan or served on the rice. The service was okay. The waiter was semi-friendly and they were pretty empty too...just us and like two other diners. Overall the food isn't bad and the service was okay. read more

Ok I have personally never been so blunt but I'm really disappointed by their service and the food offered for $90 today. I went to this place considering their rating. We were offered Papadam as soon as we settled in with green dip. Here's what we ordered: 1. Beverages- sweet Lassi . My one star is just because the lassi was good. Sweet, thick the texture of it was perfect. You can give a try. My friend tried salty lassi it was great too. 2. Momos- we asked for a mix- chicken and vegetarian. It came 10pieces in total with chutneys (dips) in the center. One spicy one tangy. The spicy chutney/dip is just spices put together with no taste to it. Tangy dip was ok. Momo overall were alright. The covering was good. The problem was that they took so long to come it was almost our main course time. 3. Tandoori Vegetable and chicken with Garlic Naan- YOU DO NOT give burnt food in the name of 'Tandoori' . I don't accept it. The bell peppers and the broccoli were literally burnt when it was brought to the table. The onions laid on the steaming plate were plain raw. When asked the guy said that it's how it is the rest is fine!! Garlic Naan- the bond that holds a Naan and garlic is butter/oil/ ghee. I don't understand how can you just give out Garlic Naan as two separate entities for $1 extra charge. The Naan didn't have any garlic-y taste to it as it should have been. 4. Lamb Biryani- it was the only savior on the table along with raita/yogurt on the side. It was alright I guess. We went to the restroom with no light in it. Once in a while I crave for Indian food but it's disappointing when such plates are offered. I loved their Tikka Masala. It was very aromatic, flavorful, and smooth. But the price is what made me give it "A-OK" or 3 stars. It is pricey for what you are getting. At $13, you are only getting some chunks of chicken white meat, and a lot of sauce. The rice was not even included ($2.99). It should have at least been included for the price charged. The Lamb Vindaloo, and the Chicken curry were good too. Obviously, they taste different from the Indian style. But I liked the Himalayan style too. I would say that they are not as pungent as the Indian style. The food took sometime to come out too. I hate giving bad reviews, but this restaurant was just blah. I used a discount coupon deal to try this place out and I'm glad I didn't have to pay full prices for what I ordered. I ordered the vegetable pakoras, chicken curry (mild), mixed grill plate and onion naan. The pakora was good and it came hot out of the fryer. Nothing really stood out with the dish. The chicken curry was just bland and it's partially my fault since I did order mild. However, the curry was just ok. The mixed grill plate came on a sizzling platter with chicken, shrimp, and lamb on a bed of onions and green peppers. I don't particularly care for lamb, but the chicken and shrimp was good. The vegetables gave the dish an extra boost of flavor. The mixed grill was probably the dish I enjoyed the most. The onion naan lived up to its name but was overpowered with too much of the sautéed onions stuffed in between the bread. Rice is extra charge per order. The restaurant is conveniently located in Old Town Pasadena below the Schoolhouse parking garage. Free 90 minutes parking in the garage. Overall: None of the dishes were exceptional. Prices are higher, as the restaurant is located in Old Town. I highly doubt I will come back again. read more

Came for a dinner and really loved the food, service and relaxing vibe of the place. If you like Chai Tea, this is the real deal and very good - not as spicy as the ones I got in India but still I liked it. We loved the Tandoori dishes, we got fish and chicken. The come on steaming hot plates to your table and smell AMAZING! My husband loved the garlic naan and ate the entire basket himself. They have a great selection of vegetarian dishes and were pretty flexible in customizing a dish for you. Oh Man I LOVE THIS PLACE!! The Beau and I had decided that Old Town Pasadena is where we wanted to dine for din and came here on a whim. I have been here on two occasions and I have never left disappointed. My first time here I enjoyed my chicken Saag. It has a spinach based sauce and tastes pretty good. There unfortunately isn't a ton of spice to the dish but it was something different that I wanted to try and I enjoyed it. Last night I ordered the Tandoori Chicken. I've never ordered Tandoori before but I was a bit thrown off when it came out sizzling and smoking and it smelled sooooo good. Once I got all of the smoke to clear away I dug right in.( I had ordered my plate HOT.My nose started to run...:::sniffles:::) It was amazing! The service is awesome. Your glass will NEVER be empty. Our waiter Rajan,(forgive me, I'm sure the spelling is way off) was super friendly and accommodating. They actually care about you enjoying the food. Best garlic Naan---HANDS DOWN. Its sooo doughy, and soft mmm. Its like clouds in your hands. Please try the Himalayan Tea, its a nice creamy tea to try. The Black Tea is actually nice too. After a day in Old Pas, we were looking for a place for dinner, and due to the good reviews of this place, we decided on here. The first thing I noticed was how hidden the restaurant is; we actually walked past it before we realized that we had passed it. Upon entering, the service staff was very friendly and helpful, seating us quickly and professionally. Drinks were quickly brought as well. The biggest issue is likely the service speed. We ordered the chicken mo-mo's, and they took roughly 15-20 minutes to arrive when there was only one other table of guests. The entrees took another 10-15 minutes after that. Other small problems include there being no trash can in the women's restroom Food: Chicken mo-mo: Essentially, chicken dumplings with a distinctive Indian flavor to them. We were definitely a fan of these, and would recommend them. Garlic Naan: A little bit on the chewy side, but still seasoned very well. Basmati Bhat(Rice): I don't know about this, I mean it's rice. I would have expected a side of rice to be included with a curry, but it must be ordered separately. Nonetheless, there were no problems with the rice. Shrimp Curry Vindaloo: The flavor was excellent. It maybe could have used some more shrimp, but the shrimp was cooked well and the flavor soaked in well too. Lamb Sekuwa: The lamb was a bit tougher than expected. The flavor was nice, albeit a bit unevenly distributed among the pieces. If it were a bit more tender, the dish would have been much better. All in all, the food was fairly delicious. The prices were a bit higher than anticipated originally, due to ordering rice and naan as sides, but still definitely within the budget. read more

Thanks to Pasadena Restaurant Week I was able to discover and try out Himalayan Cafe. The moment I walked into the restaurant, I was warmly greeted by the staff. Appetizer: Samosa: Good (crispy/flaky) Entree: Saaj Paneer: Ok (spinach flavor is subtle, homemade cheese cube was very different.) Chicken Curry: Good ( spices were not too overwhelming. Chicken was nice and moist) Dessert: Kheer: Good ( The Nepalese rice pudding had cardamom and nuts. This made the pudding enjoyable.) Gulab Jamun: Meh..(The deep fried dumpling tasted too oily and it was just too sweet for my taste) Customer service here was wonderful! Came here with my wife last night. I just don't 'get' the high rating but this place is definitely excellent in one respect - the food came out fresh, piping hot, and the chicken curry was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately I was let down in other ways - 1st - I ask the waiter what is good on the menu and he shrugs and says "everything". I have to really question him about the menu before I can figure out what I want to try - a bit long waiting for the food to come out but this was cooked fresh to order so totally forgiven. The meal that arrived looked very nicely presented. Unfortunately the Saag Paneer had a terribly burned flavor. This must have been on a full burner for way too long before the chef realized and just attempted to stir to get a more desirable consistency. Unfortunately he infused the entire dish with the most horrendous 'burnt' flavor. Saag paneer is a favorite of mine so this was disappointing. Then - my curry. It was just so bland I couldn't believe it. This was obviously a very tamed down, diluted version of the Indian and Nepalese cuisine I have come to enjoy. No bold flavors. No spice. It was like baby food. In some ways I sympathize with these people if they are forced to pervert their cooking to that extent for it to be well received by the American public but mainly I felt just disappointed. This food needs to grow a pair of balls!! It is not authentic. It has the same base flavors that are so delicate and in such diluted fashion that it's a crying shame. read more

I have had several amazing meals here. The wait staff is prompt and extremely interested in providing a great experience. I highly recommend the Chicken Makhani (#14 on the "non vegetarian" menu.) I love that they ask you for the spice level desired on theie dishes, and when you say "spicy", it IS actually spicy! Finally, I judge Indian food restaurants on the quality and freshness of their naan bread and the Himalayan does not disappoint! I actually think the Himalayan has the best Indian food in Pasadena. I would give them 5 stars, but because of the atmosphere, I just can't! I do sincerely wish they would lose the odd "blue light bulbs" that illuminate the entire restaurant. Simply put, the food looks bad under blue lighting and so do people! Food here is pretty traditional all around great indian food based off of what we got. My favorite were the lentils! Some of the best we've ever had. I'm already looking forward to my next visit! We tried HC last night for dinner and were very happy with our experience. Service was friendly and prompt. Food was hot and VERY tasty. Loved the chicken tikka masala and the shrimp vindaloo were excellent. The place is smallish, so I'm not sure how busy they get during prime dinner time on Fridays/Saturdays. We ate early on a Wednesday and the restaurant was not busy. I normally do not give 5 star reviews the first time I eat somewhere, but I would be happy to do so if we receive the same great food and great service again. When you're craving Indian and don't want to wait over an hour, come here! It was a Friday night around dinner time and there was absolutely NO WAIT time compared to another place I had tried going to that wasn't in Old Town (I'll refrain from naming them in this review). The restaurant itself is fairly homey and intimate because the tables are a bit close together and it's semi-dark with the only source of light coming from the blue bulbs overhead. We ordered Tandoori Chicken and the Lamb Masala. I freakin' LOVE Lamb Masala. Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed as the sauce didn't hold the amount of flavor I've come to expect. I also ordered the garlic naan, but could honestly tell you there was not a hint of garlic anywhere. I will say that the naan was good...if I had ordered just plain ol' naan. Anway, food aside, service was ok. The food took a bit of time coming out. I felt like we were sitting there for at least 30 minutes before food started coming out. Decided to try this restaurant during the 2011 Pasadena Restaurant Week. Upon walking in the restaurant, I was immediately impressed by the promptness and hospitality of the staff. They were extremely attentive to our needs. Since I am a hardcore water drinker, I don't recall having to ask for water at all during our dining. My glass was always filled at the second it becomes half empty, or is half full (?) =) I will definitely say that the food is excellent. I had the Chicken Pakauda for an appetizer - Wonderful! Tandoori Chicken for an entree- Exceptional! Kheer for dessert - Heavenly! I would 100% go back to this restaurant. I hear that they also serve Sunday brunch for $9.99. Got $68 groupon voucher for two, so we went here for dinner on a Thursday night. Parking was hard, it's located in old town pasadena so street parking was a struggle. The place is not big too, its across the street of Bachi burger. FOOD 4+ * Chicken Tikka Masala - ehh, its not as flavorful as the previous ones I've had. This was just lacking and a little bland. Not my fave. * Vegetable Biryani - now this one was done just right! Really good!! It wasn't dry and flavor was there, not too overwhelming. I can even eat this by itself.m. Oh, the portion was huge too even for two people. * Mixed Plate - pricey but pretty good. Portion was big and you get lamb, shrimp and tandoori chicken altogether. The meat were cooked well but not dry. Definitely worth getting. SERVICE 3+ Wait for food was sooo long!! We were seated at the corner too so we can't always see our waiter. Had the lunch buffet for my first try, so I could sample and compare the food to Indian food. The options included chicken tandoori, chicken tikka masala, lamb curry (tomato based sauce), basmati rice, sauteed cabbage, aloo gobi (cauliflower w/yellow dry curry), channa masala (chickpeas), a carrot "pudding," yellow daal (lentils), a fried curry potato chips, naan, chutney (tamarind, mint, hot sauce and yogurt raita), salad and for dessert, fresh cut watermelon. I liked that they let you adjust your own spiciness level with the hot sauce. You don't need very much to make the sauce of the lamb curry pretty spicy. My favorite was the lamb and the sauteed cabbage, which still retained a pretty nice crunch. The naan is not as fluffy as Indian naan (like at Akbar's down the street), but it soaked up all of the sauces pretty well. The chicken tandoori was properly spiced and not dry at all. What's really nice is that all of the dishes aren't too salty and have instead a balanced flavor profile. I dripped a little tamarind sauce on my carrot pudding and had it on top of the naan; it tasted like a dessert, very yum. I ordered a large Taj Mahal beer and the entire meal came out to $19.05, which is a good deal for lunch. I can see from the decor that they've been selected as customer favorites for specific dishes by online reviewers like Eat 24 for their saag paneer and chicken vindaloo. There is about two Himalayan/Nepalese places in downtown Pasadena, and this is one of them. The other one may have been more on the exotic side as they had yak. The menu on this one had closer relation to Indian food than the other one, with some more curry-flavored dishes. Nevertheless, the food still stands out. Pretty tasty. Interior is about small to medium-sized and a group of 2-6 should fit okay. Parking is available on one of the parking structures (90 min free) around or behind the restaurant. read more
