I've known Hillstone Restaurant Group since South Beverly Grill in Beverly Hills/Los Angeles. I have visited a few of their restaurants and am always pleased, Bandera in Brentwood close by UCLA, Houston's in Century City (now closed ), Pasadena and El Segundo California. The Hillstone Restaurant Group has and will continue to be a pinnacle of excellence, where attentive detailed service meets gastronomic delectableness in comforting and relaxed ambiance. We stared out with: in season Grilled Artichokes from Castorville, California, served with a whole grain mustard rémoulade and Ciabatta Cheese Toast. We followed up with our lunch mains of: 1. Scottish Salmon that is fileted in house daily with the Emerald Kale Salad with Peanut Vinaigrette and the accompanied Steamed/Blanched Broccoli with grated/crushed Reggiano (the broccoli was so beautiful - nice big pieces with stem, clean and piping hot, perfect execution. 2. The USDA Prime French Dip Au Jus with their delicious Coleslaw that features green onions and curly leaf parsley mixed with white cabbage and held together with a Coleslaw mayo (made in house too) and creamy Horseradish. We inquired about dessert and of course the Five Nut Brownie was still on the menu but they 86d the Champagne Crème Anglaise à While back, but I still asked for it . These young servers should definitely know about that unctuous dessert sauce. Overall this was a very happy lunch experience, I left there with dreams of returning. HUGE SHOUT-OUT TO THE ASIAN "HOST" THAT SAW THE SAZERAC RUNNING LOW AND INQUIRED IF SHE COULD GO AHEAD AND GET ME ANOTHER.. We made a last-minute decision to try Hillstone after landing, and it turned out to be a huge mistake. We didn't have a reservation and ended up waiting nearly two hours with zero updates. While waiting, we watched a party with a reservation leave after staff rudely refused to seat them for having one extra guest. Completely unnecessary and hostile. In that time, we tried four different drinks--all overly sweet and poorly balanced. Service was slow and inattentive throughout. The food? Mediocre at best. For the price, there are far better steakhouses in town. To top it off, management gave us attitude about having our kids with us. The vibe was unwelcoming from the moment we walked in. We have dined at several upscale restaurants and have never been treated with such disrespect as we were at Hillstone in Houston. Believe the bad reviews, they're absolutely true. The food was disappointing across the board. We ordered an Old Fashioned and a Grapefruit Aperol Spritz, and both were overwhelmingly sweet, totally off-balance. The Brussels sprouts came drowned in a sauce that had an overpowering, unpleasant cheesy funk; we could've done without that entirely. The cole slaw served with the crab cakes was swimming in mayo. The spinach artichoke dip reeked of pungent, stinky cheese. We waited so long for our entrées that by the time they arrived, the kids were already getting restless. When the food finally came, the steaks were more medium rare than medium, the mashed potatoes were loaded with green onions my child hated and kept spitting out, and even the salmon, which my kid normally loves anywhere, was rejected bite after bite. As for the service, the hostesses were clearly unwelcoming from the start. If Hillstone has such a negative attitude toward children, they should've told us before we spent TWO hours waiting for a table with a baby. Once seated, we couldn't even start eating in peace before the blonde, manly-looking female manager with the hair bun began glaring at us. She actually told us our babbling baby (who hadn't even started fussing yet) was being disruptive to other guests and to take them to the front lobby to calm down. Can you blame a child for being restless after waiting forever just to be seated and fed? Even before that, we were already getting nasty, condescending looks from this manager. It felt downright discriminatory and completely unprofessional. We ended up boxing everything to go as we felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable. We spent a total of $300 for lackluster food and terrible service. I will say, though, our male waiter was kind. Unfortunately, all the females in the establishment that we encountered were not. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration. We'll never return, and strongly advise families (or anyone who expects decent hospitality) to stay far away. read more

On June 19th we were turned away for service because my partner walked in wearing an Astros shirt (not a jersey, no name or team number on the shirt - a sleeved Astros logo shirt) As we left there were women walking in and out in midriff exposed athliesure, men in hoodies and pull-on athletic shorts, people with unwashed ponytails and ball caps on in the dining room... I am honestly floored. He was not out of dress code in the slightest - it is an athletic shirt far more appropriate than a litany of the others who were seated in the restaurant. The staff was extremely rude despite the fact that his shirt is NOT A JERSEY per their own dress code policy, I've never had such an embarrassing experience at a restaurant in my life. We just sat down at Hungry's instead where we were immediately and kindly seated by friendly service. As much as we were embarrassed at Hillstone, service like this is far more embarrassing for an establishment that apparently things so highly of itself that a 30 year customer WHO IS ABSOLUTELY IN DRESS CODE is not good enough to sit in a seat and enjoy a weekday lunch. Staple restaurant for my family. Whether the name is Houston's or Hillstone the food is always great. The salmon and dip is a classic starter for us that is always on point. Normally i get the Hawaiian steak as my entree but i went with the ribs this time and they were fall off the bone good. Always get a baked potato as my side. Caesar salad is so good. Poor service from the quality of steak to the manager first time dining in. Second time attending but the first attendance we left due to long wait wiht reservation. Our $60 steak was well cooked, however, it contained very high content of fat, about nearly 33-50% of fat that was inedible. The waitress did not show urgency or attentiveness to the problem instead she recommended to order a "lean" steak next visit. Nor did the manager ask if assistance is needed when she was asked "are you the manager?" Called the restaurant to report the problem but it rang endlessly. Recommendation: Seek professional service at many other nearby businesses that serves edible food more safe to consume for your family or purchase a steak at HEB for your loved ones. Regardless, have a nice steak, one of their wonderful salads and SPIIIINACH DIP! If you're looking for the best of the best in experiences, get a crescent-shaped booth in the back. My second time at Hillstone. It used to be Houston's but they changed the name. Our waiter Charles was extremely nice and knew we were on a time crunch. It's a candle lit table kind of atmosphere so classy inside with valet parking. My friend got the red fish with fried shrimp on top which was actually really good but my prime filet steak was even better! I order it medium rare which came out perfect. I would recommend going for dinner time instead of lunch time as they told me the menu has more options. I wanted mashed potatoes as a side but they only do that after lunch time. We walked in and were told there would be a 45 minute wait which we graciously accepted but expecting that was a conservative estimate as is typical. We sat patiently waiting for our text telling us that we would be seated and expecting that we would be seated in the order that we arrived. After a while we noticed several other walk-ins that arrived after us were being seated ahead of us. Finally after about 35 minutes we went up to the hostess stand and inquired about when we would be seated and were told there were still 3 parties ahead of us. First in Austin (now Bartlett's) and then the North Miami Beach location where I was able to get my fix for the six years I lived there. Since being back in Texas, Hillstone on Kirby has been my go to. We had a reservation for Friday 9/27 (or so I thought). We show up on time only to find they don't have my reservation. Turns out when I updated the number of guests on Fri morning, it defaulted to the next available date which was the next day (Sat). No problem, we headed to the bar expecting to wait a bit, but we were seated within five minutes. Now, I'm not a big steak guy. A few times I've paid a lot of money for a steak, only to be sorely disappointed. But I was in the mood. Our waitress talked me into the Hawaiian. I like pineapple, but wasn't sure how it'd be on a steak. But she promised me it'd be good. And it was. OMG, I swear, THIS IS THE BEST STEAK I'VE EVER HAD! The pineapple flavor was barely noticable but nonetheless tasty, and this was one of the juiciest and most tender steaks I've eaten. I can't wait to go back again! We had 5 hours to kill after a vollyball tournament. 16 strong. We made 4 reservations. We got there @ 2:45 so after the lunch rush. We asked to be seated close together as we know they dont combine tables. Please wait in the lobby to see what we can do so we waited in the lobby. 5mins later we cant sit you. Sorry why? We just cant. Yes we had bags. All are carry on and they had an empty outside deck. Not sure how you cant figure out a large group at a time that is truly not busy. Cant imagine what Friday or Saturday night happens here. Do not go here without a reservation do not go here with a large group even if you have a reservation. The worst experience I've ever had. I took my 3-year-old son to this place, and he accidentally bumped his head on the table. He started crying, and instead of showing any empathy or offering help, the manager immediately came over and told us to leave. She even took away our food and drinks from the table. I was in tears. My little boy calmed down and asked for his burger, and with a lump in my throat, I had to tell him there was no food for us anymore. It was such a heartbreaking and humiliating experience. Their servers are so knowledgeable, polite, and make sure my order is right every time. After 8 years in the Texas Hill Country, we returned to Houston for a visit and decided to have dinner at one of our favorite dining establishments, namely Hillstone's/Houston on Kirby. What a total disappointment! It is blatantly evident Hillstone has done its very best to destroy a fabulous eatery! Let's start with the food - SPINACH & ARTICHOKE DIP served with salsa, sour cream & warm tortilla chips. A favorite; however, the dip was lackluster at best and no subtle cheese flavor of the past, the salsa was bland and reminded me of the salsa one gets in hospital on a healthy diet, sour cream was sour cream but the tortilla chips although warm were store bought, surely a restaurant of this advertised caliber should make their own! GRILLED ARTICHOKE HEARTS WITH REMOULADE - Artichokes were charred but over cooked & stringy (no need for dental floss tonight, an orthodontist's dream) and the remoulade was totally flavorless. USDA PRIME FRENCH DIP AU JUS - thinly sliced roasted prime rib piled high on a toasted French roll with Horseradish & French Fries - Prime Rib was cooked medium-rare (perfect) but totally without any flavor, roll was OK but I suspect store bought, Au Jus was excellent, Horseradish had no heat & was a disaster as were the French Fries which were also store bought & soggy! I'm not sure if there is any truth in the rumor but I heard years ago that each meal had to be made every day and tasted for its quality and consistency before opening the doors? It is evidentially not happening in 2025. Service - The only positives of our experience was (1) our waiter, Devon, who was excellent, professional and polite and (2) our bottle of wine, Duckhorn Merlot, Napa Valley which was excellent! Prices - Outrageous compared to far better establishments "Up & Down" the Kirby Strip! My wife & I are not coming back until this poor excuse of a restaurant is thrown a life raft, I'm sure the Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay would relish the experience in resurrecting a distant memory, kicking ass and taking names! She comes up to us and says the guests are leaving and they are cleaning up the table. We are waiting for 15 more minutes, so I go up to her again. She says oh no. They are actually still eating, but soon finishing. They still need time for the bill and then to clean the table. Which is not what she said when she had come up to s 15 min before. So we continue to wait. Tired of waiting, we just decde to leave. She comes running out and says they are leaving now. I keep walking. She insists, and walks up to me to say they are leaving now. What upset me most is she told my sister and I that the guests were leaving and they just needed to clean the table. Then to renege and lie when I asked her about the table. I am sad to say that my last few visits to Hillstone have begun to disappoint. The spinach dip always hits a home run..def the best in the city. However, they are often short on their specials, having run out early in the evening. We arrived at 630 and they no longer had any crabcakes available giving me the feeling they aren't overselling them but under preparing for the night. They have changed the Asian noodle salad no longer offering steak as an option which they note many have expressed disappointment but it is not an option at all. The potato's are still delicious but are only offered at night so if u want a heavier lunch and lighter dinner, you are not afforded the option of a baked potato during lunch. My last visit they were out of all specials: artichoke hearts, crab cake, and soup by around 645??! I still love frequenting this restaurant and want to support their continued success but it's starting to make it easier to try new places. We've been coming here for 35 years and over the past year have begun to have little complaints upon leaving. I hope things start to change for the better. read more

Coming here for a fancy date is mostly worth it because of the ambiance of the restaurant. It's beautiful inside and out. However, I was shocked and awed that they served us fries that looked and tasted like cardboard. They seemed like they came right out of a frozen plastic bag and onto our plates. Aneena's ribs were also mediocre and small for the price. Aneena: Pulling into Hillstone, we were greeted by the complementary valet which was very pleasant. The staff at the front desk quickly and professionally attended to our needs and we were seated right away. The ambiance of this restaurant is perfect for date night with its dim lighting and light music playing in the background. The service was nice, the server answered any questions we had regarding food allergies to the best of their abilities. I opted for the Knife and Fork Barbecue Ribs that came with fries and coleslaw on the side. Oh Hillstone... no matter what you call yourself, you'll forever be Houston's in my heart. Hillstone is a dying breed in the hospitality industry. Their staff exudes genuine care for their patrons - offering thoughtful suggestions, anticipating diners' needs, and actually giving a sh*t. The venue strikes a balance with its subdued lighting and exceptional accoustics to create an atmosphere perfect for a lunch offsite, datenight, or special occasion dinner. My favorite dishes are the spinach artichoke dip, grilled artichokes (seasonal), caesar salad, and the prime french dip: - Caesar Salad: this may very well be my favorite caesar salad in Houston. The baby gem lettuce has the most satisfying, tender crunch. Their in-house made croutons are buttery and indulgent. I would gladly make this my whole meal if it wasn't for the insanely delicious prime french dip. - Prime French Dip: When HIllstone removed the Prime Rib steak off of their menu, it hurt me like a bad breakup... but then the younger, sexier Prime French Dip came and swept me off my feet. I'm a self admitted sandwich snob, but the Prime French Dip is easily one of my favorite sandwiches in Houston - Piles of thinly sliced pink prime rib are caressed by a fluffy French roll, served with a rich au jus. Make sure to opt for the creamy horseradish sauce. The whole sandwich feels much lighter than you'd imagine, making the whole thing easy to devour. The fries that come with the sandwich are lackluster compared to the french dip, so order the fry seasoning if you'd like to kick it up a notch. For my dirty martini lovers, they make a killer dirty martini with goat cheese olives. For diners with kids, I wouldn't describe Hillstone as kid-friendly, but they do offer an off-the-menu grilled cheese with fries for the little ones. While the food makes Hillstone worthwhile, we return again and again for the unrivaled service. Every server cares. If you walk away from the table at any point, you will come back to a neatly folded napkin. If you sip your martini slowly like me, they have the forethought to transfer your drink to a chilled glass. Pre-bussing is automatic. Food and drink always arrive exactly when you want it to. I had the worst customer service experience at Hillstone. I was there with my daughter having dinner during the peak dinner hour (6:00). The dining room is always a loud, noisy place, which is fine. We were not expecting a quiet restaurant setting. We were sitting towards the front by the hostess stand. I showed my daughter a video on my phone, without the volume turned up. The hostess gave us a card which stated the following..."please out of respect for other diners, we ask you take your call away from the dining area." My daughter and I could barely hear each other while talking to each other across the table. The video on my phone didn't even have volume on it. I asked to speak to the manager, who was rude and basically said, "too bad." Hillstone (previously known as Houston's) has always been one of my favorite restaurants. No where was there any signage stating or requesting customers don't use their cell phones. We weren't talking to anyone on the phone. This seems absurd, since this is an extremely noisy restaurant to begin with. The prices are high and this type of service for customers is not acceptable. I responded to a customer survey Hillstone sent and didn't receive a response. I wonder if they will allow small children to entertain themselves with devices...I just hope they can do so quietly. This was an enjoyable visit. I suggest that you make reservations as they are always pretty busy and the wait could be long for a table. We met another couple of friends for dinner. My visit here was strictly for the Hawaiian steak. No steak sauce needed. I paired with a house salad and loaded baked potato. Everything was on point. I enjoyed it immensely. There was enough steak leftover for breakfast the next morning. Even though it's not Houston anymore, it's not very different. The menu is the same and the ambience is the same. Me and my girlfriend talked about dining here for about a week since it's one of her favorite restaurants. She usually goes to Houston's in Georgia and she wanted me to try it out for the first time. We we're assuming the food was the same here as it is there. So we booked our reservations online on Christmas Eve at the Kirby Location to have a much needed date night. My girlfriend has a chronic lung condition and isn't able to walk more than a few steps so we requested wheelchair accessibility on the site. It didn't give clear instructions as to how it works exactly so we weren't sure what to expect. Upon arrival I checked in with the greeter at the front and also asked her about a wheel chair while my girlfriend stood outside waiting. The greeter told me to give her a few minutes while she gets an associate to come out and assist us. At the end of the conversation a lady walked up to the counter next to the greeter and stared at me without saying anything (I'm assuming she was the GM). I proceeded to walk back outside and wait for assistance. We stood outside for about 5 minutes until the same lady walked outside in a hurry and she approached us and said "Do you have a jacket to put on?" I was wearing a long sleeved dress that comes down to my knees with nothing provocative showing. It's a fitting dress so it slightly rose up while walking but to diffuse the situation I pull it down to my knees. She says again (You still don't have a jacket?) So i explained to her that I didn't have once since there was nothing inappropriate about my dress anyhow. So afterwards she said (Okay never mind it's fine) then she turns around, walks away and as she was going inside I ask her if anyone is coming out soon to assist us with the wheelchair. She says that they don't have wheelchairs and she doesn't know what the greeter was talking about. She also couldn't explain what wheelchair accessibility on the site meant. So we had to slowly walk in and be seated on our own. The best part about the service at this place was our waitress. Thank God she was as sweet and polite as she was because after that incident I felt so disappointed and disgusted with the customer service within 15 minutes of us being there. I would have been willing to disregard the approach about my dress. But what really made me leave this review is the fact that the GM at this establishment was 100% inconsiderate to my girlfriend's disability. Instead of her coming outside and informing us about the wheelchair we requested, she walked all the way outside to only approach me about my LONG SLEEVED dress then walks away. My girlfriend just got diagnosed with this disease a few months ago and has already been feeling really down and discouraged and we specifically planned this dinner as an outing for the holidays and before we even made it inside, we were being treated HORRIBLY. That situation was completely unacceptable and ruined our entire experience here. We weren't even able to enjoy our meal. If it wasn't as late as it was, we would have left and went elsewhere. My husband and I had our first date at Hillstone, when it was Houston's, over 26 years ago. We celebrate every anniversary here. Today was our 26th anniversary, and Shauna and Edna made sure it was wonderful! We had the ribs and grilled redfish, which were delicious! To end the meal, we were served a hot fudge sundae. What a great ending to our celebration meal! Such a blessing to be able to still celebrate at "our place" every year, and know it's going to be as wonderful as the year before! read more
