This place has lovely ambience and great customer service. I appreciate that it has a free valet option however you can also park the car yourself. I tried the crabcake and the ribs. The crabcake is decent however I'm not a big fan of the ribs. There's also a very rich mashed potato dish and cabbage that they have, which did taste good, but is very decadent. I've been a loyal Houston's/Hillstone customer since 2004 and have dined at this location for the past two years, always with a great experience -- until tonight. I was hosting a client for a business dinner when the new GM, Hannah Overstrom, informed me and said my dressy crop top violated the dress code. I've worn similar dressy tops here many times without any issues, and another guest was wearing a far more revealing outfit without any comment from staff. Being singled out like this in front of a client was embarrassing and unprofessional. Very disappointing after 22 years of patronage. Highly recommend making a reservation as this restaurant is always packed. This is only my second time visiting. The service is amazing everyone greets you and makes you feel welcomed. The server was very attentive. She even poured my martini into another glass that was cold because mine had warmed up lol I loved the attentiveness. The restaurant is dimly lit definitely great for date nights, but also good for dinner with friends. For my beverage I had a lemon drop martini. It tasted more like orange liqueur and they do put an orange peel on the outside was not my favorite version of a lemon drop. For my entrée, I ordered the Hawaiian ribeye, which was cooked to perfection at medium. I love that they top it with a teriyaki style butter that has pineapples in it. I opted for the baked potato as my side, which had all the right toppings in it they were not stingy. How to ruin a once thriving, excellent, and expanding restaurant? Hire a consultant to tell you to drop every signature item off the menu. First get rid of the baked apples that made your restaurant a destination stop. Then axe the signature chicken tenders. Then get rid of the absolute best club sandwich in the world. Then drop the baked beans and replace the signature cheeseburger with Canadian bacon with a standard burger that lacks charm and distinction. Then just drop the signature shoe string fries all together and serve fries that diners can get at any restaurant in town. The list goes on. Such a revolting development. June 2026. My first time since before when it was called Houston's VALET PARKING. They have an adequate parking lot, so why is it completely blocked off at lunch? WORSE MANAGER and RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE EVER!!!  After a fabulous afternoon with three friends, enjoying some of the best food on the planet and settling a $1,100 tab, our experience took an unbelievable turn. The manager came to our table and told us, "You need to leave the restaurant because you have been here too long."We were shocked and asked what she meant. She explained that we had been there for more than five hours and that our table was needed by other people. We then asked if we could move to another table, especially since there were many empty tables in the restaurant. Her response was simply, "No. I need to ask all of you to leave." What made the situation even worse was the manager's rude and condescending manner. We were longtime customers who had just spent $1,100, yet we were treated as though we were children who had overstayed our welcome. I have been a loyal customer of Houston's/Hillstone for more than 20 years, not only in Houston but also at locations in four other states. I have always enjoyed the food and the restaurant experience, which makes this treatment especially disappointing. After this experience, I can say unequivocally: I will NEVER EVER dine at another Houston's or Hillstone restaurant again. 4 of us dined at Hillstone Saturday night - arrived at 6 pm and table cleared by 7 - adults had 2 drinks in 1 hour but wait staff was clearing as FAST as they could!!! A busser dropped a very heavy fork on my foot and I yelled and a hostess came over to ask if I was OK. Well, there was no blood but it really did hurt!!! My dad and I stopped in here for dinner on a weekday night. They have free valet but we self parked. We were sat in a semi circle style booth and it was a great location to see the whole restaurant! I got a margarita, the burger, and he got the redfish with dirty rice. The food was very good! The service was so on par, many servers came together to make sure our drinks were refilled and we wanted for nothing. I took a ten minute phone call and didn't notice someone had slipped a card at the table asking to not take calls in the restaurant. I was not offended at all, what a classy move and I totally respected it! Along with the delicious brownie for dessert, our total was $100. I had a business meeting amd webdecided to grab something to eat. I mentioned asked my associate if he had ever been to Housto's? He mentioned that it had been many years but he remember the quality of the food and the service. We showed up approximately 9:25pm. When we walked in, the hostess was not present. We waited but then a friend recognized me and we went and talked to her. Afterwards we sat down, waited l. After a couple of minutes I got upbandvwalked to the hostess. She informed me that the kitchen was closed. I looked at the time it was 9:35pm. I then informed her that we had actually walked 10 min ago and that no one was at the hostess stand. Her Mangaer walked up, Ms. Sadie Sweet and had obvious attitude and told the hostess to go and seat me and my associate. Then she turned tovmevand told me to order immediately because and proceeded to fling the menus. I asked her whywas she so upset?? She quickly responded with attitude and said that she was not and that I should not judge her facial expressions. She asked if I wanted to sit down, which i responded yes, I just did not understand why she was so visibly upset and that i had been a frequent customer and not once had I ever recived this level of treatment from a Hillstone restaurant. I ordered the tried and true Ding's Crispy Chicken Sandwich which is a buttermilk fried chicken sandwich with Swiss cheese and their house slaw. It tastes like a classic chicken sandwich but when coupled with their spacious, low lit dining area, soft music, it's a complete vibe. I felt called to review this restaurant after reading all of the horror story reviews related to children dining in. We had a reservation for a group of 5 (2 couples, 1 two year old) for 5:45 on Sunday night. We were seated within 5 minutes of our entire group arriving and seated at a large booth. There was no children's seating (high chair/booster seat) offered, but also was not needed in our case, we simply put my son in the middle of us in the booth and he was able to reach the table well enough. Not once did I feel like anyone was giving us the side-eye or condescending due to us having a child with us. In fact, there were several tables with children while we were dining. No kids menu was offered, but no one said anything about us providing him with snacks from home. He sat quietly and watched his iPad with his headphones on after he was finished eating. The service was phenomenal. Drinks were never even halfway empty before they were filled again. Food was good for the prices, but I wouldn't say anything was amazing enough to return for. Especially in Houston. Steak was ordered medium-rare and came out rare, but still very good and better than being over cooked. We also had the Caesar salad, chicken sandwich and the crab cakes. All excellent portion sizes. We wrapped it up with the cobbler, key lime pie, and sundae. All delicious. I have visited a few of their restaurants and am always pleased, Bandera in Brentwood close by UCLA, Houston's in Century City (now closed ), Pasadena and El Segundo California. The Hillstone Restaurant Group has and will continue to be a pinnacle of excellence, where attentive detailed service meets gastronomic delectableness in comforting and relaxed ambiance. We stared out with: in season Grilled Artichokes from Castorville, California, served with a whole grain mustard rémoulade and Ciabatta Cheese Toast. We followed up with our lunch mains of: 1. Scottish Salmon that is fileted in house daily with the Emerald Kale Salad with Peanut Vinaigrette and the accompanied Steamed/Blanched Broccoli with grated/crushed Reggiano (the broccoli was so beautiful - nice big pieces with stem, clean and piping hot, perfect execution. 2. The USDA Prime French Dip Au Jus with their delicious Coleslaw that features green onions and curly leaf parsley mixed with white cabbage and held together with a Coleslaw mayo (made in house too) and creamy Horseradish. We inquired about dessert and of course the Five Nut Brownie was still on the menu but they 86d the Champagne Crème Anglaise à While back, but I still asked for it . These young servers should definitely know about that unctuous dessert sauce. Overall this was a very happy lunch experience, I left there with dreams of returning. I am sad to say that my last few visits to Hillstone have begun to disappoint. The spinach dip always hits a home run..def the best in the city. However, they are often short on their specials, having run out early in the evening. We arrived at 630 and they no longer had any crabcakes available giving me the feeling they aren't overselling them but under preparing for the night. They have changed the Asian noodle salad no longer offering steak as an option which they note many have expressed disappointment but it is not an option at all. The potato's are still delicious but are only offered at night so if u want a heavier lunch and lighter dinner, you are not afforded the option of a baked potato during lunch. My last visit they were out of all specials: artichoke hearts, crab cake, and soup by around 645??! I still love frequenting this restaurant and want to support their continued success but it's starting to make it easier to try new places. We've been coming here for 35 years and over the past year have begun to have little complaints upon leaving. I hope things start to change for the better. read more

VERY disgusted with my experience here today!! I (a black woman) was wearing a soccer jersey for FIFA. The host let me know that I was unable to wear my jersey because it is not apart of the dress code. I went back to my car to get a jacket and returned. Upon returning there were 2 ladies (white women) in athletic wear in the lobby. I asked the manager if the dress code was enforced across the board and she replied with "I enforce the dress code and it's Houston so they are hot". Does me being hot warrant me being able to wear my jersey or no because I am a minority? When I expressed my frustration that it wasn't a fair policy being enforced to everyone she stated that "I don't have to dine here.". I have been going to Hillstone for 15 years and have NEVER NOT ONCE experienced mistreatment like today. Poor customer service from the GM, Heather, and the way she handled this situation to a loyal customer is completely unacceptable. After I went to sit in the lobby the GM went directly to the chef and began to talk and laugh about the situation right in front of me while continuously looking at me. Been to this location since it was called HOUSTONS. Just got denied service for wearing "flip flops". We just left getting mani and pedi's for our 10yr anniversary next week. But we can get served at way higher end place "Toulouse, Bari, Brasserie"and not a problem. Sports hat backwards was the issue before no problem but vineyard vine sandals is ridiculous to not serve us. While waiting, we watched a party with a reservation leave after staff rudely refused to seat them for having one extra guest. Completely unnecessary and hostile. In that time, we tried four different drinks--all overly sweet and poorly balanced. Service was slow and inattentive throughout. The food? Mediocre at best. For the price, there are far better steakhouses in town. To top it off, management gave us attitude about having our kids with us. The vibe was unwelcoming from the moment we walked in. We have dined at several upscale restaurants and have never been treated with such disrespect as we were at Hillstone in Houston. Believe the bad reviews, they're absolutely true. The food was disappointing across the board. We ordered an Old Fashioned and a Grapefruit Aperol Spritz, and both were overwhelmingly sweet, totally off-balance. The Brussels sprouts came drowned in a sauce that had an overpowering, unpleasant cheesy funk; we could've done without that entirely. The cole slaw served with the crab cakes was swimming in mayo. The spinach artichoke dip reeked of pungent, stinky cheese. We waited so long for our entrées that by the time they arrived, the kids were already getting restless. When the food finally came, the steaks were more medium rare than medium, the mashed potatoes were loaded with green onions my child hated and kept spitting out, and even the salmon, which my kid normally loves anywhere, was rejected bite after bite. As for the service, the hostesses were clearly unwelcoming from the start. If Hillstone has such a negative attitude toward children, they should've told us before we spent TWO hours waiting for a table with a baby. Once seated, we couldn't even start eating in peace before the blonde, manly-looking female manager with the hair bun began glaring at us. She actually told us our babbling baby (who hadn't even started fussing yet) was being disruptive to other guests and to take them to the front lobby to calm down. Can you blame a child for being restless after waiting forever just to be seated and fed? Even before that, we were already getting nasty, condescending looks from this manager. It felt downright discriminatory and completely unprofessional. We ended up boxing everything to go as we felt so unwelcome and uncomfortable. We spent a total of $300 for lackluster food and terrible service. I will say, though, our male waiter was kind. Unfortunately, all the females in the establishment that we encountered were not. My family and I have been coming to this restaurant since the year I was born, nearly 30 years of consistent dining here for casual and celebratory occasions. On June 19th we were turned away for service because my partner walked in wearing an Astros shirt (not a jersey, no name or team number on the shirt - a sleeved Astros logo shirt) As we left there were women walking in and out in midriff exposed athliesure, men in hoodies and pull-on athletic shorts, people with unwashed ponytails and ball caps on in the dining room... I am honestly floored. He was not out of dress code in the slightest - it is an athletic shirt far more appropriate than a litany of the others who were seated in the restaurant. The staff was extremely rude despite the fact that his shirt is NOT A JERSEY per their own dress code policy, I've never had such an embarrassing experience at a restaurant in my life. We just sat down at Hungry's instead where we were immediately and kindly seated by friendly service. As much as we were embarrassed at Hillstone, service like this is far more embarrassing for an establishment that apparently things so highly of itself that a 30 year customer WHO IS ABSOLUTELY IN DRESS CODE is not good enough to sit in a seat and enjoy a weekday lunch. We were at Hillstone two Saturdays ago for lunch. My grandson, 6 months, was asleep in his stroller. I asked for a table against the wall , so that he could remain asleep. We were told that the stroller had to remain at the front door. The hostess could not have been ruder. We had to wake him up to leave the stroller. Fortunately, he is a very good baby and we held him during lunch. No one would wait on us. I have grown up eating at Houston's. I will never return. The whole experience was awful. My daughter and I felt very uncomfortable. The other adult with us is still talking about the negative experience. My second time at Hillstone. It used to be Houston's but they changed the name. Our waiter Charles was extremely nice and knew we were on a time crunch. It's a candle lit table kind of atmosphere so classy inside with valet parking. My friend got the red fish with fried shrimp on top which was actually really good but my prime filet steak was even better! I order it medium rare which came out perfect. I would recommend going for dinner time instead of lunch time as they told me the menu has more options. I wanted mashed potatoes as a side but they only do that after lunch time. I've been coming to Hillstone (formerly Houston's) for decades. First in Austin (now Bartlett's) and then the North Miami Beach location where I was able to get my fix for the six years I lived there. Since being back in Texas, Hillstone on Kirby has been my go to. We had a reservation for Friday 9/27 (or so I thought). We show up on time only to find they don't have my reservation. Turns out when I updated the number of guests on Fri morning, it defaulted to the next available date which was the next day (Sat). No problem, we headed to the bar expecting to wait a bit, but we were seated within five minutes. Now, I'm not a big steak guy. A few times I've paid a lot of money for a steak, only to be sorely disappointed. But I was in the mood. Our waitress talked me into the Hawaiian. I like pineapple, but wasn't sure how it'd be on a steak. But she promised me it'd be good. And it was. OMG, I swear, THIS IS THE BEST STEAK I'VE EVER HAD! The pineapple flavor was barely noticable but nonetheless tasty, and this was one of the juiciest and most tender steaks I've eaten. I can't wait to go back again! Poor service from the quality of steak to the manager first time dining in. Second time attending but the first attendance we left due to long wait wiht reservation. Our $60 steak was well cooked, however, it contained very high content of fat, about nearly 33-50% of fat that was inedible. The waitress did not show urgency or attentiveness to the problem instead she recommended to order a "lean" steak next visit. Nor did the manager ask if assistance is needed when she was asked "are you the manager?" Called the restaurant to report the problem but it rang endlessly. Recommendation: Seek professional service at many other nearby businesses that serves edible food more safe to consume for your family or purchase a steak at HEB for your loved ones.
