This one was equally wonderful with the outdoor seating area that was perfect for conversations and relaxing. The lights back there are lovely and plenty of space to not be disturbed. Local Foods in the Upper Kirby/River Oaks area has a slightly different vibe than the one in The Heights because it's located in a shopping strip on a busy street (W Gray) with nice retail shops and restaurants. Parking can be tight depending on the time/day. This location feels like it has more indoor seating and a better patio than The Heights which is more exposed to the outdoor elements off the trails. I couldn't remember if I'd been here before until old photos I posted showed. I'm used to The Heights location which is closer to me. It's been about 5 years when I first moved to the loop that I went here with a friend. I had the OG Brussels sprouts which were my favorite when they still had Benjy's in Rice Village. It was a staple for 25 years. They closed in 2020 to expand Local Foods. Pretty bummed because Benjy's was great and had an amazing pecan-crusted goat cheese appetizer with pita. It had more of a cocktail lounge vibe that my friends and I would frequent back in grad school for HH. They had another location off Washington, but that is also closed and is now Forget Me Not. Anyways, the Brussels sprouts were amazing, and I always loved them. I'm glad that Local Foods occasionally features it as a special. I usually gravitate towards the crunchy chicken sandwich. The pretzel bun is everything, and the filling is loaded. If you have a bit allergy, this is not for you. It has pecans in them. I like the added potato chips, too. This time I tried the tacos de camote which was a sweet potato taco. I couldn't find any photos of it on this Yelp page, but I've had sweet potato tacos before in Scottsdale and was hooked. I didn't expect two large wedges on sweet potato lodged in a taco shell. It was delicious and carmelized. You could hear the crunchy outside texture. Loved that. What I didn't love was the difficulty of eating it. The wedges were huge, and the sweet potato was too hot and steamy. It would've been better had they been diced. The pumpkin seed mixture was good but too spicy with the jalapeños. I like spicy food but didn't expect that. The tacos needed salsa or crema to cut through the heat. I picked off the jalapeños and fork and knifed the sweet potato after a few bites with the taco shell. The taco itself is a blue nixtamilized corn tortilla. It held up the taco filling fairly well considering the huge wedge of sweet potato. It also dripped the oil off the sweet potato. I couldn't taste much of the refried beans. I liked these tacos, but it was a little too spicy and didn't have the acid it needed to make it better. I ate the sweet potatoes and nixed the tortillas. As for the sides, I usually get the kale salad because theirs doesn't taste like dirt. Lol. They add enough lemon, pine nuts, golden raisins and Parmesan cheese to make it taste better. I could eat a bowl of that. It's always served in a tiny container. I also get their homemade potato chips. It's dusted with Old Bay seasoning. It can be oily at times, though. This time, I tried a seasonal side of strawberries that was recommended by the guy at the register. It was delicious. The strawberries were soaked in a slightly sweet simple syrup with chopped basil. They have a variety of lemonades, tea, fountain drinks, cocktails and refrigerated beverages to choose from. Lemonade can be too sweet, so I dilute it with ice and water. I like that it's open with the cups and plastic to-go cups if that's your preference. I've always enjoyed what Local Foods offers and like that they offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Service is friendly, and it's a nice, casual place to dine in or on the patio. read more

I have been to local foods dozens of times and it never gets old. I literally get the same thing EVERY TIME. This week I visited twice. So I decided it is time to review this place. I have been to one other location in the Houston area but to me this is the best location. Always consistent, fast, clean, and friendly with huge portions. Lunch time gets busy just an fyi! Parking is a breeze usually because they have a parking lot. Every single time I come to local foods I get the same thing and I recommend you try it if you haven't. It's called the Crunchy Chicken Sandwich with pickles and chips. I could eat this every day and never get tired of it. It has so much flavor, chicken, and texture. It's perfect in every way. Wow! This place worked for me. You order at the counter, seat yourself & they bring your food based on the number they provided to you. My power bowl was just simply wonderful. I have to give a huge shoutout to this location of local foods. I had a last minute 27 person meeting with a variety of dietary restrictions and needed to find same day pickup for food by 11:30am. I called before opening (while sitting outside just in case) to see if this location could accommodate my order or if I needed to split it between rice village/ upper Kirby locations so I didn't overburden their kitchen. I couldn't believe they picked up the phone before the restaurant opened :) Jason (GM) let me inside, sat down with me and the menu to make a plan, and happily accommodated my order for an 11am pickup same day. The order was flawless, the food is always delicious and they are great at accommodating dietary restrictions. I ended up with the chicken Mediterranean bowl, Thai steak bowl and pistachio crusted salmon as my main entrees and chocolate chip cookies for dessert. Stopped by for a Valentines dinner and we had the beef entree and the salmon salad. Beef was good and tender and my salmon filet was cooked perfectly. Salad was good amount. Service is still order at the front and they bring food to you. I saw a lot of solo eating here tonight. We sat on the patio and they have ample indoor and outdoor seating. Boy was she right! When I recieved my delivery, I saw that this was the BIGGEST salad I have ever gotten in my life! Not only that, it was packed with the toppings (cauliflower, brussels, hummus, chicken), making it so hearty. I went for lunch with a friend, one of our regular spots.. they made a small insignificant mistake, on my order, so when the food came out and I noticed the mistake I mentioned it, and for a second I thane I forgot to specify, but my Freind said I had asked for GF, I told them I was happy to pay for the difference, they declined, corrected my sandwich, and someone else came out, maybe a manager and said they were going to refund my full lunch... I said it wasn't necessary, it was an insignificant mistake, and they corrected it.. but appreciated the offer... well they insisted, and after brought me a complimentary GF brownie, which was amazingly good... I checked out Local Foods for the first time yesterday. I did go during an odd time, between 2 and 3, for a late lunch. There was plenty of seating, the place was calm, and ordering was quick. Nut allergy warning: Most dishes at Local Foods have nuts. There are really limited options for people with a nut allergy and most are relatively pricey or not as healthy. I wouldn't recommend eating here with a nut allergy to be honest. Food came out really quickly, just about 8 minutes from ordering. I had the Gulf seafood sandwich and the only sides that were good were the chips and potato salad (not a fan of pickle, and the watermelon portions were just not much). The sandwich was great - very flavorful, decent portions. Much more shrimp than crab, though (4.5/5). The potato salad was okay, flavorful but a bit too much mustard (3.5/5). The chips varied in size and quality. Some felt almost stale but others were fine (2.5/5). It was very pricey ($21+ with tax and tip) so I wouldn't come back often. Its super chill and the customers always seems so relaxed.Plus, its only ten minutes from where I stay so the convenience of it is also a positive.The vegan queso chili w/ tortilla chips and vegan carrot cake are my faves!!!! After not having visited Local Foods for a few years, a friend and I stopped in for brunch this past weekend. I liked this location a lot more than the one I had previously visited as it was cozy on the inside and had ample parking. The sandwich was delicious and I loved that they used a pretzel bun. They also didn't skimp on the ingredients within the sandwich which I also appreciated. I opted for the 2 sides and chose the Tuscan kale salad and the couscous, both of which I love. Their food just feels fresh, light, and flavorful. I will say that for lunch, it can be on a pricey side for a sandwich- running between $15-$18, but I do enjoy the food and am willing to splurge every once in a while The service is great. It is a walk up counter to order and then seat yourself. The staff members were super friendly and nice and will bring the food out to you and bus the tables.
