My parents were in town this weekend, so my partner and I took them to Hillside Farmacy for brunch. We arrived just after 9am and were immediately seated inside. We were thankful to be in the AC, given how hot it already was outside! Our server was quick and attentive and quickly brought us some coffee before taking our order. Food came out quickly, too, and we enjoyed a pleasant breakfast. The aesthetics inside are really unique. The place used to be an old restaurant pharmacy, so it still has a cool pharmacy vibe. This was our last stop for brunch in Austin, and let's just say it definitely did not disappoint! I loved the homey vibe of the restaurant. The decor perfectly reflected the place's history, and the staff was super friendly--even though they were clearly busy with the Austin Marathon in town. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted and seated within minutes. The woman who sat us was warm, engaging, and even recommended a few menu items we should try. We started with the frozen Irish coffee and the carajillo, both of which were absolutely delicious. The carajillo could've used a little less ice, but it was still refreshing. For my main, I tried the fried egg sandwich with bacon (thanks to the recommendation) and it was everything you could ask for in a breakfast sandwich! The bacon was perfectly crispy, the fried green tomato added a nice touch, and the avocado and slightly runny egg made it all come together. I seriously didn't want it to end. But once I took a bite of the pancake, I knew I was in brunch heaven at Hillside! It was so fluffy, and the berry compote was amazing--you didn't even need syrup. Honestly the most performative restaurant i've ever been to in Austin. Went for a birthday dinner and they immediately let us know there was a $25 cake fee for us bringing in cake for the birthday girl?? I'm sorry i've never in my life heard of a restaurant doing that. So just know if you want to bring your own cake just don't unless you want every bite to cost you! Second the bathroom lights not working and all you get is a puny little dollar tree candle to see is wild to me? Like i'm young and able but bitch i couldn't see a god damn thing in there. I got the Caesar salad and wish i didn't cause it came out with legit no dressing just some dry ass leaves then when we asked for dressing (which all 3 of us needed cause tf?) it was legit mayo i stg. I went to Hillside Farmacy with my friend for brunch. We were trying to go to Paperboy but found this gem nearby because the wait was too long. We both ordered the big brekkie. I got my eggs over easy. Instead of meat I chose avocado because they only had pork bacon and sausage options. The dish also came with arugula, toast, and crispy potatoes. I added a side of fruit as well but the fruit could've been fresher. They also brought ketchup, jam, butter, and hot sauce to the table which I loved because I love sauce with my food. I absolutely loved the meal overall. My favorite part was the crispy potatoes. I dipped them in a side of garlic aioli that I asked for. The vibe of the restaurant was amazing. The furniture and decor had a cute vintage and earthy feel. I would love to decorate my future home like that. The service could have been better but the food and decor made a great experience. I've written a review in the past but HAD to follow up after my most recent experiences with Hillside Farmacy. In my review, 11 months ago, I said I'd 100% be back....no lies told. I've been back week after week and it's because of the amazing customer service and good vibes. This place feels like home to us. Tonight, especially, the filet with the steak dinner was cooked to PERFECTION. Haze (sp) at the bar was so kind and knowledgeable by walking us through the wine selection to find a perfect pair with our food. The ambiance and music is always top tier. Richard checks on guests while making them feel comfortable and always has great recommendations, food wise. If you're reading this, and haven't been yet, please go and find out for yourself! The history of the space is so special and they have tasty and affordable Happy Hours throughout the week, as well. Thursday has Happy Hour specials, at the bar, for drinks and starter options, so that's a fun way to make your way around the menu. We will continue to keep coming back! Pretty good! I was drawn in by the very unique and pretty set up outside, the indoor decor. I love the backstory of keeping the pharmacy theme but unfortunately it really did not live up to my expectations. The servers were nice but the service was very slow, getting our order in took awhile, getting our drinks took awhile, and getting our food took even longer. I had the kale Caesar salad with chicken and it was good, good portion, but not outstanding. It really didn't have much flavor, I've never had to add salt and pepper to a salad before and I asked for lemons too just because it didn't have much taste. The Caesar dressing also was a little on the sweeter side which wasn't the best but overall it wasn't too bad! Fresh ingredients! I came for happy hour last Friday. I liked the vibe and how the place was decorated. However, the food was not good and had me questioning if I had covid because so many of the items were tasteless. I ordered the following: Baked Brie: 1/5 I don't know how you can mess up baked brie, but the brie was tasteless and the fig jam on top had no sweetness at all. Arancini balls: 1/5 Very mushy inside, needed seasoning. Mac & cheese: 1/5 No different than boxed mac. Desperately needed seasoning. Shrimp cocktail: 1/5 I had one shrimp and left the others unfinished because it tasted foul as if the shrimp had been sitting out defrosting for a while without refrigeration. A dining companion and I ate here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon at 3:00pm. Although we had a reservation, the restaurant was only about a quarter full. Hillside specializes in 'farm to table' food, with a witty spin on the word 'pharmacy', more on that in a moment. For starters we shared the Arancini Balls. The order came out promptly and were delicious. There were three to an order, so of course instead of fighting over the third we split it. The sauce was tangy and at the same time hearty, which complimented the balls of risotto, parmigiana onion and spices. They were perfectly crispy on the outside and moist and gooey on the inside. A winner dish. For the main we both ordered the burger. My barometer for many American bistro/diners is a burger, just like for Mexican restaurants the taco - if you can't make those staples then I'm going elsewhere. The burger is flattop fried, not smashed, and the quality of the ground beef was evident, with a nice char on the patty and the sides. Bun was toasted - the only proper way to serve a burger - and was brioche style and delicious, not overly bready. The picked cucumbers were great, as was the garlic ailoi, and the cheese was melted perfectly. The bun fits perfectly over the patty. The fries were delicious; fried in what appeared to be peanut oil as there was a nice brown crispy crunch and they were moist inside. The decor is charming; the first Black owned pharmacy in Austin, converted to the restaurant. The old pharmacy counter has been turned into the bar, with beautiful original penny and vintage tile on the floors throughout. The lighting complimented the space perfectly; copper sconces on the walls and huge copper kettles hanging upside down fitted with light fixtures. Plants throughout top off the charming vintage cozy feel. There are two main dining rooms with a few tables out front and a covered side patio with fans and misters. The music was neither too loud nor offensive, a nice calm upbeat ambient style. Our waitress Sally was a consummate professional; she was completely knowledgeable about the food and proportions. Sally kept a watchful eye on our table and was not intrusive or pushy, her timing was perfect, and everything came out exactly as ordered; the burger temp and the 'extra' and 'on the side' items. I absolutely recommend Hillside Farmacy for a nice calm quality dining experience, and will definitely return. Go. read more

The overall look of this place is SO cute & very on brand with FARMACY! Our server was very nice & saved us some money by recommending we order one batch of fries to share due to the portion being large! We had a mimosa carafe that came to the table pre mixed & the taste was excellent. We started off with the Arancini Balls & let me tell you those babies were divine! They are very large in size, the flavors are on point & the sauce that accompanies them is SO creamy. I had the Kale Caesar salad w/ Chicken & was a bit disappointed. The kale pieces were huge which made it hard to eat & the chicken was nothing to write home about. My girlfriend had the Citrus Salad which she found extremely refreshing. Circling back to the fries, we had the option of regular or vinegar fries. Our server suggested that we get the vinegar on the side just to try it! I was a little apprehensive on the vinegar but they must add a sweet element to it because it was a perfect dip for the fries, which honestly could have been crispier. Feels like stepping back in time, with sweet swiveled barstools, checkered tile floors, and glowing apothecary decor embraced by ivy vines. What was once a trendy chef-driven foray into the East side has now become a mainstay, and they're serving all your favorite farm-to-table dishes sourced fresh from local providers. I'm going a little nuts over the hand-cut fries - crispy russet potatoes with a dash of sweetly acidic malt vinegar and smoked salt, dipped in garlic aioli. I CANNOT STOP. But we did in fact stay for entrees, a beautiful red fish subbed in for snapper atop seasonal butternut purée with crunchy green apple and a brown butter reduction. Fish was delicate, flaky but not dry, blending perfectly with sweet, crunchy, savory flavors rounding out the very nice dish. Campfire mousse was a bit disappointing, finding it more milk than dark chocolate, and challenging to eat. I'd recommend a rework on that item. Hillside Farmacy has been on my list for a long time and I am happy we caught their Sunday Night Steak Special. For $25 it is definitely a great deal. There was a good selection of wines all resonably priced and the patio was beautiful in the evening. Our waitress was kind and attentive. However, we felt the food left something to be desired and was lacking flavor. The bolognase does not compare to many Italian restaurants in town and I would argue a home-cooked one even surpasses it. We had to send back the french fries for being undercooked / raw. No complaints about the steak though! It was cooked to order and paired with a nice sauce. Overall, a decent resturant with a nice ambiance but I would be hesitant to return. read more

Disappointing Experience - Wouldn't Return I really wanted to like this place, but the service left a lot to be desired. Our waitress seemed to forget about us for long stretches of time, and we waited far too long for our food with no updates or apologies. When the food finally arrived, it was average at best--not worth the wait. To make matters worse, a mandatory 20% gratuity was added to the bill. While I normally have no problem tipping well for good service, being forced to leave a high tip after such a poor experience felt unreasonable. Overall, this visit was frustrating and disappointing. Went for restaurant week a couple weeks ago and was so impressed. Admittedly I hadn't been in years! They have a new chef and the revamped menu is excellent! Ordered the crab and mushroom toast, petite ribeye, roast chicken, panna cotta, and campfire mousse. The toast was stellar! Loved the texture and flavor so much. I feel obligated to rate this spot 5 stars for brunch just on the basis of the service alone. Our server was extremely patient with our large group of 9 and even agreed to tease the two people who showed up late, and indeed did so in a non-hostile way that gave us all a laugh. The staff were very pleasant and conversational. Food-wise, we collectively tried the pancakes, the house salad, the caesar salad with chicken, and the oysters. We came here in November 2022. This was a special breakfast as it was at this restaurant that I met my manager of my first job after graduation. My school had an event here in March 2022, and this was the "room where it happened". Since that was a private event, not sure if the catering menu is different. The food that day was great but nothing special. This time I ordered one of the sandwiches and the coffee drink that has the stick of cinnamon on top (I'm one of the few folks who does not detest that spice). The coffee was good, but the sandwich I got was a little plain. Otherwise, the service was great and the restaurant is very pretty!
