Hard to find (hence the name, very appropriate) but great little cafe in south eugene. It feels very much like a neighborhood cafe and typically has a decent amount of customers, though it always feels calm and relaxed. They have a great selection of house-baked items from bread to pastries (even a few gluten free options, though don't count on it being celiac-friendly as it is a bakery). Hideaway has always been a wonderful spot for delicious food and a lovely atmosphere. I hadn't been since the pandemic and was interested to see how they were operating at this point. I was blown away by the changes they have made! They've changed all their seating to socially distanced circles and expanded it out to little garden coves within the parking lot, allowing for the safest set up I've seen of any local restaurant and continuing they're wonderful atmosphere. They've built an outdoor cart like kitchen with open windows that allows for the kitchen staff to be safer and there for the customers. The menu is different so I was curious to see if that quality of food was the same. I ordered the hideaway scramble and honestly think it's BETTER than before. So incredibly delicious. Stopped in for lunch with my husband and everything started off very well. Super friendly cashier with good suggestions on pairing which drink with which meal. Ample seating. Not too long of a line. Music playing. Sadly it went a bit downhill from there. We waited over 30 minutes for a veggie rice bowl and a soup/sandwich combo. The people in line behind us received their food before us. We figured maybe something about ours took longer to cook. Just as we were about to go and inquire about our order the server arrived. Not nearly the personality of the cashier. Put our food down and walked away. No silverware or even a heads up to where we could get it ourselves. No mention of "sorry for the wait". Nada. Starving we dive in. My husband said his minestrone soup was tasty and his turkey ruben tasted good but wasn't very warm. My rice bowl wasn't very warm either. The ginger and peanut sauce had a great flavor but was a bit watery. I'm assuming it was watery because the squash in the bowl was total mush from being over cooked. I was also surprised when I bit into caramelized onions. It was like eating a bite of French onion soup mid Asian dish and just did not work. I've had Hideaway's pastry at the Saturday Market and loved the veggie Cornish pastry but I was sadly disappointed with my visit to the restaurant. This is our second time visiting Hideaway Bakery. We really enjoyed it and will be coming back for more! It's definitely a busy spot on a Saturday morning, so come with a little bit of patience. The lattes were delicious, the baguette was really good, but our favorite was the cinnamon sticky bun (warmed up). I definitely recommend this spot. They also have a Farm Cart outside, with a bigger menu for breakfast and lunch. It's actually pretty good, but our order took approximately 35 minutes to come out. If you're looking for a quick bite for breakfast on a weekend, this isn't it. If you have time to sit down, chat, sip on a good cup of coffee while waiting for breakfast, this is the spot. There seems to be heating available for the cooler months as well. There's shade for the warmer sunnier days! The food from the Farm Cart was delicious, but I have to remove one star for the wait time. Even though I was patient and understanding, we ordered three items but they didn't come out at the same time. Most people wait for everyone at the table to get their food before eating, so by the time we waited for the last item, everyone else's food was cold. I'd recommend that they bring all the food out at once or maybe have a food warmer while they wait for the entire order to be complete. Other than that, I enjoyed the visit. read more

I came here to do a bit of studying on a Sunday around 11 am, and there were quite a few people here. I tried a veggie cornish pie, almond croissant, and a ciabatta roll here. The cornish pie was delicious, filled with carrots and potatoes I believe, and the crust was wonderfully flaky. The almond croissant was disappointing, it wasn't particularly flaky and didn't have a strong almond flavor. The ciabatta roll was chewy and light and airy, quite good, although not the best I've had. They have lots of outdoor seating, which was quite pleasant on a warm morning like when I was there, and the cashier was very friendly and helpful. They have internet too, so it was good to be able to study there, although if you're bothered by a lot of noise it's not ideal, since it was pretty crowded and loud. I just put in my earbuds and I was fine. I would recommend this place, although not the almond croissant. read more

Hidden from tourists. This was our destination for breakfast and we almost couldn't find it! I was looking for something different for breakfast and this bakery sounded good. My DH chose some of the baked good while I had the Muesli with yogurts day berry compote. It was delicious! We sat outside since it was s very pleasant morning. I was delighted to see the mix of people and dogs and kids. There is actually a small sandbox for the kids to play in. There was also an indoor area which is shared with the restaurant that fronts on Amazon Dr. There were many breakfast choices and we enjoyed ours. read more

Good looking bread; good latte. Wanted a loaf of sourdough but was told they'd thrown it out because it was underbaked. I ordered a sandwich. When I inquired about my sandwich after a 30-minute wait, I was told "30 minutes is our usual wait time." For a sandwich? It's not busy. Maybe it's time to look at ways to make the kitchen more efficient or hire more staff. Sandwich was "ok" when it came 10 minutes later--just a sandwich, no chips, not even a garnish. Continually not impressed. They run out of or put away all baked goods, including bread, cakes, etc. at least an hour or two before closing. My son played in their sandbox and a day later was sick with a fever. Updated 2/16/18 they installed one more door in the ordering area so that is slightly improved. But... I'm pretty afraid of this place's standards of hygiene. I just spilled a little water on the floor inside the seating area and went to wipe it up with a napkin. I'm serious when I say I've never seen a filthier floor in a restaurant. It was quite literally sludge that came up on my napkin. The water made BLACK mud-like substance. It's not a high-traffic area either so not from regular Oregon muddy feet. read more

They have delicious food, drinks, and treats! It's been 10 years since I've been here because I never find myself on this side of town and the bakery is, like the name suggests, hidden! We just happened to be nearby and looking for a place to eat, and we're so happy we stopped here! I'll be coming back often! We ordered a roasted beet salad, Turkey BLT, a plate of holiday cookies, and a steamer. Everything was delicious! They didn't skimp on the chevre on the salad, and it was perfectly dressed. The sandwich was juicy, not dry, which is sometimes an issue with grilled sandwiches. The caramel steamer wasn't overly sweet, and it had silky foam, which I love! read more

I ended up purchasing the Gluten Free Pumpernickel Bread. I am happy to say it was quite delicious as I enjoyed it as avocado toast with radishes I purchased a few stalls down from them. My friends and I tried the Hideaway Bakery the first time today, to celebrate one of my friend's birthday. Another friend had recommended it. There were 6 if us. All of us really liked our menu selections. It does take a while to get your order and it took approximately 20 to 25 minutes from the 1st order to the 6th order. So that is the reason for the 4 stars. I was aware there was a wait which means everything is prepared fresh which is great. But you feel bad when you have your food and the others are still waiting. They did try to serve 2 of us a couple of times. I feel the food is worth the wait. I will go back again with a friend, but I won't suggest doing it as a group again. It is very popular and they served a lot of people during the time we were there. So they do have a vast following and I can certainly see why. read more

Went here on a whim to see if I could get some of "those rolls" (you know, the ones they serve in Mazzi's). "They just got out of the oven" Yeah! They are fantastic! Got them home and we had some with a little butter. Also, I thought I would try some of their banana bread and while it was good, it seemed like it lacked bananas. The people behind the counter were very friendly and helpful and appeared as though they liked doing what they were doing. Lots of people coming in and out buying stuff and people eating outside under the covered dining area. A little cramped at the display/cash register area but do-able. I love their lattes and ravioli. Their pastries and breads are top notch. But I need to talk about their bagels. As a Jewish person who has family from New York and family from Montreal, and who grew up in Los Angeles, I've been searching for the best bagels in Eugene for almost a decade now. And I've tried a lot of bagels, but these bagels are it for me. Now hear me out. These bagels are NOT the fluffy bready bagels that many are used to. I've tried Lox, Stocks, and Bagels and they have a pretty decent New York bagel- possibly the best in Eugene. Humble Bagel was a consistently yummy go to before it closed. Bagel Sphere is fine in a pinch. But still I've been missing something. But Hideaway has filled that void. The sesame bagels here are as close to a Montreal bagel you can get in Eugene. Flatter, chewier, crispier, seedier than your typical bagel. Are they a perfect match for the bagels of my childhood family visits? No. But they're damn close. And I appreciate that a whole lot. This is an update--and my apologies that it's taken me so long to post this update. Sometime after I left my original review, one of the co-owners of Hideaway contacted me and we had a great discussion. As valued and long-time local business owners in our Eugene community, I feel compelled to share some history about Hideaway that they shared with me. First, the owners of Hideaway, as mentioned previously, originally started out with Mazzi's, which is a much beloved Italian restaurant in South Eugene. They also own an organic farm, and a portion of their income comes from their farm. One of the goals was to create the area's only wood-fire wholesale bakery. That's key because if you have ever wondered (as I did) why the interior was set up in such a challenging fashion it's because the intent wasn't to have a bakery where customers would come, but to instead act as a wholesaler providing yummy wood-fire baked goods to local stores and Saturday Market. The actual success of the baked goods is the same exact reason that the structure of the bakery can be a challenge if you happen to be in a hurry. One of the things Brooke let me know is that they are in process on trying to come up with solutions to the bottleneck, perhaps an exit door that would help eliminate the difficulty. I'd also like to share that one of the things I really appreciate about Hideaway Bakery and the Mazzi's ventures that are somewhat affiliated--at every turn I can see a goal of trying to create something community-minded. So for instance--once it became apparent neighborhood customers, rather than just wholesale customers were eager for some wood-fired baked goods, the family tried to create supports to be a comfortable gathering point. The outdoor area is simply amazing, including boasting one of the most lovely children's sandboxes you'll find at any place of business in Lane County. The outdoor area is heated in winter, and I've loved that if I am feeling housebound, I can sit outdoors and drink a coffee, stay warm and dry. Alternately, bakery customers can go inside a side door to the Mazzi's restaurant and enjoy a table by the fire. If you're in a time crunch, as I often am, you will have to be calculated in your visits to Hideaway, but everything about this family labor of love deserves to be supported. read more
