The food was absolutely amazing! We had breakfast at Hibiscus Sweet Gelato & Café twice during our stay on the island because it was that good. The smoked salmon, hash brown, and egg sandwich was absolutely out of this world--fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. The only downside is that the owner does everything himself, so the food can take a little longer to come out. A helper in the kitchen would definitely speed things up. While staying at Kauai Shores Hotel we decided to try this place while we were at the shopping center near by . Every time we would want to eat here it was closed . We went for breakfast one day at the time they said they were open & waited. We could hear some noise coming from inside the location but they never opened we waited 15 minutes then left . We even tried calling the phone number but no one answered . The menu looks amazing & has a lot of choices. We were sad they were never open when we wanted to try it. read more

I'm disappointed. There are no prices on the menu outside. I was going to use the kiosk to order but they told me they'd put it in for me. Without being able to see the price, I ended up with a $54 bill for two people. There are neighboring restaurants that would have been a least cost option. Hubby had wanted to try breakfast here. Their hours online say they open at 8am, at kiosk 8:30am. We were there at 8:30am, no employees there. At 8:45am heard something happening inside but still not open for business. This must be what they mean by Hawaiian time. Sorry but no! The pictures are very misleading. And so are their prices. The picture said $18.99 when I was charged $27 for a rice plate with a quarter of the flatbread. He said I was getting a flatbread with the rice place not sure where the flatbread is but we were giving a tiny piece only, the shrimp was flavorless and not fresh tasting like we've had here on the island at other places. Rice is bland with no flavor, just a sad dish for almost $30, definitely would not recommend. This was honestly the only thing we tried here on the island that was just disappointing. Food also took a while, maybe it was because he was the only person working idk. Also tried a sugar cane juice $11, not worth it either, flavorless colored water with a slice of orange in it. The ads at the side of the building show the delicious grilled rice plate with what looks to be a full flatbread. In reality, you only get 1/4 of a flatbread, placed underneath the meat so that it was incredibly soggy. For breakfast, we chose the fluffy pancakes. You can see by the photo that it looks like you get 4. You only get 2. In addition, the prices of the items listed outside of the building are not what you pay. The only way to see what they actually cost is by using the electronic kiosk, which is incredibly hard to see in the sun. Completely bait and switch. This restaurant is one of the restaurants located in the Coconut Marketplace, a nicely renovated outdoor mall with great parking. The reason I am leaving this restaurant one star is because of the food, service, price, and poor atmosphere. Food: the food they deliver is not the same as the menu description. We arrived at the restaurant ~10 am and the restaurant was already out of pancakes and waffles - one of the highlights of the menu. We ordered a banana split with two small scoops of watery gelato. The additional scoop at cost. The banana split came in a plastic cone, with a banana thinly sliced around the edge and one strawberry on top. There were two lady fingers in the ice cream and some candied macadamia nuts thrown around it. The best thing about it was the candied macadamia nuts. We ordered an iced coconut coffee for my mom. It came in a large plastic container and filled to the brim with and little coffee. Yes, this is a small complaint, however, there's ice and really just a small coffee in a large cup... Service/Price: Customers order using an electronic ordering system - great, right? Both systems are placed high on the counters on stands. Someone who is shorter would find it hard to reach the top menu options given the vertical layout. This would also be an issue for someone who had physical limitations that impacted their ability to reach. The restaurant has a sign off to the side that indicates customers can save 3% if they pay for their order with cash. There is no option to pay with cash, just with card via the machine. Why didn't I ask someone? This is where the service comes into play... there was no one to ask. Only one person was working and making food at the back of the restaurant with blaring music. The front of house person left after taking a replacement food order for someone when we first arrived. The replacement food order. Another customer approached the front of house person when we were placing our order and indicated that their toast was like cardboard and wanted something else to replace it. The lady was combative and rude to the customer while they took their replacement order. Ambience: the tables were poorly organized and music blaring... not a great experience. HORRIBLE SERVICE, MIXED REVIEWS FOR GELATO Visited Hibiscus Sweet Gelato during a family vacation to Kauai. The Pros: The coconut gelato. Extremely creamy and rich, absolutely delicious. The Cons: Customer service. The person working was a blond haired male (assuming the same one that many others have written negative reviews about) and his customer service was terrible. Not sure why he still works here after all these bad reviews unless someone in his family owns the business? I arrived to the stand with one child and we were immediately told he could not help us and we needed to wait. There was some partially-cooked chicken on the grill, but the guy was just occasionally moving it around on the grill, not doing much else, so it seemed like he could have helped us the meantime, but nope! Apparently this guy is incapable of any multi- tasking. After he completely finished the chicken, boxed it up, and got the food to the customer, he finally asked how he could help us. We asked to try a couple gelato flavors and were told only 1 sample per person. I tried the coconut gelato which was incredible, but couldn't try others that I wanted to try. Our child tried the mango gelato which he also really liked. We asked him about a few of the other flavors which were not clearly labeled and he seemed to be getting visibly annoyed. And then he stepped away again to work on something else and we said we were ready to order and were told we'd have to wait again. After another few minutes, he said he could help us. I wanted 2 flavors and ultimately had to order another flavor without trying it, which turned out to be not that great. We paid and were on our way. The icing on the cake was that I came back 10 minutes later because my elderly mom wanted gelato too and again was immediately told I'd have to wait. The blond guy then put some raw chicken on the grill and still could not help me even though it was clear that the raw chicken would have to cook at least a few minutes before being ready to be moved around on the grill. So I had to wait several minutes while the blond guy did nothing and raw chicken cooked until the chicken was ready to be moved, then he turned the chicken a few times and then finally decided he could help me. Both times I went to the stand, there was no one else in line, and it took way too long; I can't imagine how long it would take if there was actually a line.
