A little restaurant in a strip mall by some shops. Sleeping is the key word here because although it is unassuming, it was arguably the best meal we had on Kauai! The young guy that took care of us at the counter was so friendly, welcoming and cool. He realized we were from out of town and took extra time talking through the menu. We had delicious food, and opted to dine in at a table inside the restaurant. We had a fried Hawaiian ono (wahoo) burrito with black beans and rice, ahi tuna poke with coconut rice, and a grilled mahi mahi plate. Everything was so fresh and tasty. This spot is is very busy, so come before the rush if you can. It's walking distance from hotels and the beach with lots of parking. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. Food is made to order, so though it takes a while, it comes out fresh and hot (just how I like it). They have water cups you can self serve. All the food was pretty good. My favorite thing was the lillikoi Cheesecake. It was full of lillikoi flavor infused in instead of drizzled on top like other places. The salad with the Wagyu Plate was also a hit. I looked up places with the best plate lunch before we arrived to Kauai and Sleeping Giant Grill seemed to be very well rated and highly recommended. The restaurant is on the smaller side and tucked away in a smaller stripe mall behind the Coconut Marketplace. There is limited outdoor seating, and also a larger indoor seating area found at the back of the restaurant. My husband ordered the Teriyaki Chicken and I got the Habanero Chicken - both ordered with the mac salad and rice. The portions were fairly large, although I would have loved even more mac salad because I love to have all components of the plate in every bite and ran out of mac salad quickly. This is the first time I've had a mac salad with potatoes in it, and although I'm not usually an enjoyer of potato salad, this was delicious!! If I can recommend one item off of this menu, it would be the Habanero Chicken. It was cooked to perfection - the breading was perfectly crispy and the heat level was decently spicy. The flavor was so delicious, I bought an extra side of the sauce to drizzle over the chicken. Although they offer a wide variety of items on their menu, I ordered the same thing on two different occasions because it was THAT good. This was our first meal upon arriving to the island and it truly set the bar so high! The last time we came here was 8.5 years ago and we weren't sure this place still existed. Lo and behold it sure did and we were so excited to go straight from the airport to eat our favorite ono fried fish, crunchy. Creamy sauce. Just perfect. For the kiddos they had a chicken teriyaki rice bowl with carrots and they loved it. And of course a lilikoi cheesecake to commence our vacation. I'd give this place a solid 3 stars. The overall experience was just okay, but there's definitely room for improvement. The fish was overcooked and ended up being dry, which was disappointing considering it's a seafood-focused restaurant. Portions were also on the smaller side, especially for the price. I was particularly let down by the fish tacos--they were below standard and lacked the flavor and freshness you'd expect. Nothing really stood out in a positive way, but it wasn't terrible either. My husband and I were staying at a hotel nearby and thought we'd stop here for dinner. It was really busy on a Tuesday night, so we figured it was a really popular spot with great food. We ordered takeout and the food was ready within 20 minutes. We ordered the grilled ahi burrito, ono fried fish tacos, and a lilikoi cheescake slice. The ahi burrito was okay. It was a little dry, and there were some sprouts or vegetables in there that just didn't taste good at all. The fish tacos were huge but they were so overcooked and dry - I'd compare them to thick chicken breast tenders. It was not enjoyable at all. I've had a lot of poke on this trip, and this was, by far, the best one. We've had a lot of lunches, a lot of fresh seafood, and this, again, was the best meal. One thing I've learned here is that the exterior and interior of the space is 100% not an indicator of the quality of food you'll be getting. Outside had a few tables, inside had a small seating area, there were no flashy signs or decor...just really, really good food that came out on paper plates. We got the poke platter and the grilled fish plate and our favorite meal of the trip only cost $50. The fish, the rice...everything was spectacular. Stop by for a quick meal (it was ready in about 6-7 minutes) and I dare you to be disappointed. So simple, and so delicious. read more

If I could give this 6 stars, I would! Our neighbor in the condo next door recommended this place. I struggle to find words to tell you what a delight it is!! This really is off-the-beaten-track and we would never have found it without the recommendation and directions. It is part of a small building, just across the sidewalk beside Lava Lava Beach Club. The address is 440 Aleka Place in Kapa'a, HI. Tucked away in a small strip mall behind the Coconut Marketplace, between Imua Coffee Roasters and a jewelry shop, it is worth the search. They have a few tables inside for seating and picnic tables in front of the shop. Since we were a short walk away, we ordered take-out and ate our meals on the lanai of our condo. You enter and are greeted by a friendly person eager to help you order the take-out style meals. They are ready to answer any questions you might have. Fortunately, our neighbor recommended the Ahi Wrap. I just might dream of this meal when I am back home. To try to describe it (knowing I won't do it justice) is challenging. A very fresh, large tortilla is filled to the brim with rice which might have been seasoned with a touch of hoisin sauce, shredded carrots, a small amount of shredded cabbage and a few slices of cucumber and the freshest, perfectly sautéed Ahi you can imagine. The seasonings and a little bit of some dreamy sauce make this truly delicious. It is then wrapped up like a burrito. They give large portions. I am glad my husband and I split it. Perhaps most amazing of all, is that it cost $18.99, before taxes!! We came back several times for this meal. We also ordered the Korean Barbeque Chicken Plate on a different night, which was also very good. Since we live far from the coast and don't get fresh fish often, we usually stuck with the Ahi Wrap. The Lilikoi Cheesecake was really special, too. It reminded us of a cheesecake version of Key Lime Pie. They offer several wrap options, plate options, and Andy Iron Burritos, which we did not try, but I have no doubt are equally delicious. The only disappointing thing was that they are closed Saturday and Sunday, but hey, if you need the weekend off to create such amazing food and keep the workers so happy, it is a good call!! read more

We figured out in was Sleeping Giant and decided to give it another try. So glad we did! You order at the counter, and find a place to sit outside or inside. It is very casual. They have drinks for sale or cold water available to customers. We ordered the Korean BBQ chicken plate, Habanero chicken plate and Poke plate. We all were so happy with our food! There was plenty to eat and share. The cashier did go around and check on everyone which I thought was great because she wasn't actually a server, just had good customer service. The flavors were so balanced, and the ahi was so fresh. It was also a really good size, and at a good price point. The service was also really friendly. They were nice enough to help us pick out what to order, and even though it's counter service, they brought the food out to us when we were sitting outside. The ambiance is very casual, and I think they cater to both tourists and locals based on the price points being fair and the food not overly touristy.
