The add ons here are over the top! 3 dollars for 2 slices of lemon for water 10 dollars for an extra thing of chips. 6 for extra salsa. And if you ask for only rice and no beans they will charge for the rice that is "extra" Make sure you check your bill before paying. They will add on sodas and appetizers. And no margaritas at a Mexican restaurant should've been the first red flag. read more

Nice to have an authentic Mexican restaurant in Kauai when you want this type of food. They use Ono fish for their fish tacos so that's an upgrade. Salsas are not shy and are well made. Rice and beans could use some more flavor but overall this place is good enough. read more

Went on a Monday at 3pm And the food was fresh and wonderful. I got the birria tacos- highly recommend! Some of the best I ever had, incredibly fresh. Local and charming restaurant located in a small strip mall. We ordered the steak taco combo plate (w/ rice and beans) and the king burrito. The steak was very flavorful and tender in both the tacos and burrito. My husband said the burrito was tasty and very filling. The homemade beans were tasty and not too salty. I've heard great things about this place but after trying it, I'm not a fan. the food is totally bland, steak and shrimp just tastes like butter, fish is definitely not salted and has zero flavor whatsoever, the table salsa has no flavor either, the other sauce is a chipotle mayo which is ok. the portions are great, beans and rice are good and the watermelon juice is good too. Greeting & seated quickly upon arrival. Staff were friendly, and attentive enough to warrant an "okay" tip. 3 people were working the front of the house. You could tell the difference between the customer service given to select customers vs. others. Food came quickly and restaurant was clean. Ordered watermelon and hibiscus Fresca drinks--but they were on the sweet side so we waited until the ice melted to drink them. Food was good, and had flavor. Could have used better hot sauce options. Didn't care for the two options provided--mayo chipotle mix & some kind of red/brown spice filled sauce almost similar to an enchilada sauce. Kauai doesn't have very many open late, dine in options--this one will do if looking for something to eat late, dine in--but don't wanna get all dressed up and don't want McDonalds, or some other fast food option. read more

Not the greatest location, but that's the only negative. People were friendly and helpful. Food was delicious (particularly the chile relleno, which is my husband's favorite) - don't miss the flan for dessert! Prices were very reasonable. Will definitely return if we are visiting Kauai. read more

Shrimp tacos were so good I'd be proud to be a subject to this "King of the Sea" The special sauce was great and I love that they had bottles of it for me to douse how ever much I wanted onto my tacos. The Al pastor tacos were solid too. The food was so good I had to order a Baja shrimp burrito as well. Very authentic and delicious! Lots of Mexican food back home. This was by far the worst. Stopped for a snack (Nachos) and who would think you can mess that up. Stale chips, almost no cheese, and apparently a hard of hearing owner, we asked for salsa and got none. Charged us $6 for the initials chips/pico he brought to the table.. Coming from San Diego we always said we would never try a Mexican Restaurant in Kauai. But this last trip we decided to try something new. The soft shelled crab tacos intriguing us so we decided to give El Rey Del Mar a try. Victor was kind enough to recommend some items, the Octopus tacos one of them. So glad he recommended it because it was hands down the best thing we ate on this past visit to the island. I order the chimichanga, flan and pickled jalapeños. The first problem was the cheapness of the to go box!!! I barely made it to my car with the container intact!! It fell apart when I got home. I had to put it on a plate to carry it from the car. The steak was going bad and had a bad taste to it. I only ate a few bites and then didn't eat anymore. A few hours later I felt sick and was nauseous all night. I'm grateful I didn't eat more than a few bites!! DO NOT EAT HERE!!! We came here three times over the span of our weekend trip to Kauai, it was that good! I highly recommend the Baja fish tacos and Baja shrimp tacos, the shrimp were definitely my favorite! They have a really good chipotle sauce that really ties everything together.
