After a morning of snorkeling, we decided to go for a little food trip. This was one of the stop. My wife and I shared the 3 Taco plate. We had other stops to make. This gave us an option to try three different meat...had the fish, carne asada and chicken. All were good and flavorful. Service was friendly and food didn't take long. They have seatings inside but there are picnic tables outside to enjoy the Hawaiian weather. Parking is scattered around the area but many of the parking lots were full. Okay for the record I was starving...and our food took FOREVER to make...but honestly, one of THEE best fish tacos I've ever had. I got the Rosarito Fish Taco, Garlic Herb Shrimp Taco, and Carnitas Taco with a side of steamed beans. Also got a side of Chips and Salsa Best taco was the Rosarito Fish Taco. It had plenty of perfectly grilled and seasoned mahi mahi. Second best was the garlic shrimp taco. This was just as good as the fish but it only had like 2 shrimps in it! RIPP. Last was the Carnitas taco. Carnitas were pretty good but a bit salty. At least there was a lot of meat tho! Wish I would have got a second fish taco instead. Chips were thick (it's my pet peeve to get thin-ass chips so that's a plus) but lacked any flavor and they gave us a 2 oz container of salsa...with like 100 chips.... That amount of salsa is good for like one bite lol. Steamed pinto beans were FIRE as well! Cute indoor decor and plenty of outside seating. Definitely recommend! read more

A Mexican food restaurant in Hanalei! Wow! Anyway, my wife and our sister-in-law wanted fish tacos so they ordered that here. The food took a long time to prepare as they had to prepare it fresh. The process took longer than I thought but my wife said that it was worth it. The fish was fresh and the 2 tacos that came in the order was filling enough. The restaurant sits along Route 560 in the middle of Hanalei. It's popular because most of the other restaurants close too early to accommodate the tourists who come around after laying on the beach all day. The wait is horrendous but they have great happy music to entertain the hungry crowd. I had the Seafood Flautas plus a large soda, total was under $20.00 dollars. They served me cold rice and very cold beans, the flauta was ok nothing extraordinary. The wait is long so by the time you get your food 1/2 of your drink is gone and they do charge for a refill. Extremely disappointing experience. We waited nearly 45 minutes for food that was mediocre at best--and not a single apology for the delay. To make matters worse, the "small guacamole" was barely a tablespoon of mashed avocado. I don't usually write negative reviews, but this one felt necessary. 2nd Place - 2022 Kauai Fish Taco Throwdown There is a lot of upside to this place. Cute venue, nice staff, nice outdoor covered tables, easy parking and pretty solid, authentic Mex fare. The fish taco was solid all around with on point flavors. A little pricier than others but not outrageous and you DO get a slice of avocado. On the North Shore, this is the place for fish tacos. We got some tacos and was able to sit at the picnic tables outside and people watch! Such a relaxing and great experience. The tacos were good and full of toppings. The fish is cut on and grilled. I may have ordered the wrong thing. I prefer salsa over pico so I asked for no pico on my chicken tacos. Apparently that is all they put on them so I was served 2 corn tortillas with diced chicken on top. When I asked for cabbage or lettuce on top, she charged me 2.50 extra. Unfortunately, I already tipped so walked away unsatisfied for $22.00. As a local, there are many other taco trucks/restaurants that serve a proper taco with toppings for a better price. Good Mexican restaurant that opened in Hanalei Town recently. Quite a few vegetarian options and menu items overall. Service is pretty good and portions are okay but it can take a while to get your order, however. You can dine in at their open-air sections or at the benches outside. Just a heads up, Federico's does charge for extra condiments and drink refills. read more

While sightseeing and perusing the shops in Hanalei Center on 2/5/2022, it was time to grab a bite to eat for lunch. There were several places to choose from, and with just six reviews ... but all 5-stars on Yelp! ... Federico's was a logical choice. After all, you can't come to Kauai and not have some Mexican food, can you? Being from SoCal, where anyone with a sombrero can claim to cook Mexican food, and now a mostly retired caterer whose Mexican menus were the most popular, I can honestly say that Federico's is 100% legit when it comes to tacos. And I've been spoiled by several "hole in the wall" places around L.A. that most people have never heard of. My wife had a combination plate with two grilled fish tacos, and I opted for the trifecta ... carne asada, carnitas, and al pastor. The plates come with homemade refried beans and rice. The fish tacos are loaded with fish, cabbage, avocado, pico de gallo, and drizzled with crema. The meats were each distinctly seasoned as they should be. The asada was topped with onion and cilantro, the other two with pico de gallo. We both added the red salsa ... homemade with just the right amount of heat. These are not "street" tacos made with 4.5" tortillas, but two full size 6" tortillas -- your choice of either flour or corn. The amount of fillings in all five would easily have made double the number of typical street fare. Considering that most food on Kauai -- in restaurants or markets -- is priced about double (or more) that which you find on the mainland, at $5.95 for an a la carte taco, you won't find better for less anywhere on the island. Ordering a "plate" is like getting the rice and beans at no cost, so why order a la carte? The burritos I saw going out looked just as stuffed, but I think the tacos are the best choice for the money. If you come to Kauai, don't pass up a drive to Hanalei to see the bay, and don't pass up the chance to have what is probably the best Mexican food on Kauai. Definitely 5-stars, if not more! There are picnic tables outside and a small indoor dining area with high tables and chairs for about 10 people adjacent to the pickup counter. No upcharge for credit cards like many other places. read more

Stumbled upon this little place after hanging out at the beach all day and decided to give it a try. It was BUSY and they had a sign up saying they were short staffed, so we were prepared to wait. Waited in line for about 20 minutes and then waited 40 minutes for our food, but my fish tacos were worth the wait! Catch of the day was Wahoo (aka Ono) so I had to try it. These were the best fish tacos I've ever had! Loved the toppings and the sauce, plus the fish was cooked perfectly. Both the crispy and charbroiled were delicious, but I do prefer charbroiled for a lighter feel. Other people in our group got the Al pastor and shrimp tacos, but we're not quite as impressed with those. I shared a few bites of mine and they wished they had gone with the fish! read more

We both had the fish tacos, and they were some of the best we had in Hawaii - and we had quite a few while we were travelling! Friendly staff and reasonably quick service. The weather was overcast and threatening, so all of the restaurants in town had waiting lists the day we were there. There was no line at Federico's the first time we passed, and a very deep line once we got in line. They did an excellent job of keeping the orders flowing. Highly recommended! read more

This place is excellent! I ordered the 2 enchiladas plate. 1 enchilada was carnitas(shredded pork-so tender & tasty) and other enchilada was chicken. I loved the corn tortillas. Tasted like they just made them, fresh. Green sauce was excellent. Guac was tasty and rice and beans were great! But my favorite was the salsa. Medium and delicious. The line is well worth the wait. (40 minutes waiting in line & to get food) There is a reason the line is so long for a take out restaurant. Looks like they used to have indoor seating pre Covid. (See pics) The only reason why I gave them 4 stars is because they need to serve beer and margaritas to make it a perfect meal. You will only find soda & water here. Sigh .... I should have known better. Like a restaurant with a stunning view, food from a fast food establishment in a tourist town is rarely worth it, and Federico's fell into that category for me. Was it truly Mexican fast food? Sort of. Both the Carnitas and the Carne Asada were cooked well, but their choice of spices leaned more towards Hawaiian than traditional Mexican. Can also say the same for their fish tacos, but I'll give them a pass on those as almost all North American restaurants fail at delivering true Mexican fish tacos. Were the prices reasonable? Lol, it's a tourist trap, and to top it off they charge for soda refills and to-go containers, literally nickel-and-dimeing every chance they got. In my case a single fish taco was $7.25 and the other two were just under $7. In total, including my wife's chicken burrito and a side of chips, our bill came in at $45 with one soda. Was the salsa good? NO! Was the kitchen quick and efficient? Not a chance. No restaurant, fast food or not, can cook food to order instantly. Real Mexican fast food takes a few minutes to put it all together. With a huge backlog it's not unreasonable to wait 10 or even 15 minutes to complete an order. There were a total of 7 tickets ahead of mine; it took them 30 minutes as they painfully prepped one order at a time using less than 50% of their flattop. Was the front counter service good? Not even close. No dialogue, no smile, no help with questions (at least in my case). Worse yet, when I asked for a refill on my soda I had to get back in line and wait another 10 minutes. Service at its finest. Across the street is a little red hut that served Dole Whip. That was equally as pricey, but at least the food was good and the service was engaging. read more

The food was a solid 8/10. I'm from a small town right on the US/Mex border which has an abundance of amazing Mexican food. The fish of the day (mahi mahi) was cooked well and not too dry. The sauces that they add on top of the fish was great and tasty. The Carne Asada was good, and so was the pastor. The tortillas fell apart quite easily which was a tad annoying. We also got a carne asada quesadilla and it was good too, for Hawaii. The service was great. They were busy but did not have to wait too long. There are a few shops near the restaurant so we just walked around and checked them out while we waited for our food to be done. The indoor dining area is small but there is seating outside too, a few benches. It was also clean. We would go back again the next time we come to this island. read more

Also, we ordered fish tacos that were breaded and soggy, even though there was no sauce in the taco. We waited about 1 hr and 15 mins with no warning it was going to be that long. Decent fish tacos (wahoo was the fresh fist for the day on our visit). I tasted the fish more with the Rosarito Fish Taco, which was charbroiled well, while the Chipotle Fish Tacos highlighted the flavors of the sauce more, which I wish I had more of. My husband thought the opposite...either way, the fish tacos were satisfying. I appreciated the thick piece of fish in the tacos and loads of cabbage. Not too saucy though my Carnitas Taco fell apart since I tend to eat slow and the two corn tortillas didn't hold the fillings well for too long. The orders don't come out in order. We waited 45 minutes for one taco and a bean and cheese burrito. By the time the food came out, our drinks had watered down and were warm and the cups were soggy as all the ice had melted. My hubs went and asked the young lady that took our order if she would replace them, which she did. Hence a 3 and not a 1. The food, when it finally came was really good. The chips and salsa were yummm. Again, the 3 and not a 1. However, I had asked for no chipotle sauce on my taco and it was covered. I did not want to wait another 45 minutes for a taco, so I ate it. It wasn't bad, I'm just not in to chipotle on everything as is the trend right now. I'd say if you're going to try this place in the beautiful Hanalei, that you NOT go any time during the 12 o'clock hour. They seemed to settle after 1:30. The young lady that took the orders was very nice. The female cook was not. She was a bit rude. After three orders taken after mine came out, I asked her what was taking 1 taco and a bean burrito so long. She rolled her eyes and said it's coming up.
