This review is NOT about the food. Solely about the service and setting expectations. It took us an hour and 15min to get our food. Upon ordering, the woman told us 45min. She was not friendly whatsoever, but likely overworked just like the food staff. We have a 2 year old and a 2 month old, but we knew that nothing in the area would likely be under that so we went for it. Over an hour later still nothing. Finally at an hour 1:15 it showed up. The main reason for the one star is that they only had 2 people working there making food - they need to hire more staff or set better expectations. It's not fair to treat their workers like that. Upon getting the food, they had run out of takeout boxes. So now we're bringing food home wrapped in tinfoil, will be cold and soggy by the time we get there. They stopped taking orders an hour before close, but didn't tell anyone walking up that. No signage or anything. I told at least 20 people they were no longer taking orders. Very poorly run place - management needs to staff up and not work their current employees like dogs. read more

I'm full Mexican and I was really looking forward to Hawaii's take on fish tacos. Im happy to say the Chipotle Fish Tacos were BOMB!! They have some sort of colorful bell pepper salsa on top that is SOOO good. I ordered the 2 taco combo which comes with rice and beans. The rice and beans were not very flavorful so I wouldn't recommend you getting the combo. Unfortunately they didn't have any avocado or guac, but my food was still delicious without it! The food was delicious! Five star quality and taste! I wanted to mark it down one star because it took at least 40 minutes to get our food. Which felt like an excessive amount of time. But, I know there are staffing shortages throughout the Kauai island, (and everywhere else too). So, I didn't because I don't want to diminish the food quality. But a warning would have been nice... To the owners, please let people know about the long wait when they order and -- take their phone number -- so you can text them when the food is ready! That way your customers can walk around shopping at the many cute gift shops, and looking at the historic markers (there are many on the backside of Federico's) while waiting. I wouldn't have minded the wait at all, if we could have walked around during that time. (Get a free Google voice number for texting!) read more

Be prepared to wait for your order (30-60 min based on the time). Fresh ingredients, good flavors. Wish there was the option to make something spicy or add some chilis. Favorite was the veggie enchiladas, but the other veggie/vegan options were great too (grilled/charred veggies on the tostada were also great). They stop taking orders 20-30 min prior to closing, so plan ahead. read more

Very disappointing on several levels. First, the service. It took 45 minutes to order and get our food. And the place wasn't busy! 12:20 pm a Thursday. Didn't want to wait for Calypso's to open at 1 PM. Got our food after Calypso's opened. Should have cancelled but had been waiting so long. The food: Guacamole. It's not made with fresh avocados. It was watery and had no flavor. They use fresh avocado for garnishes but not in the guacamole?!?! Fish taco's: the fried were a 2. The grilled were a zero. The fish had a yellow hue. Gross. The enchilada wrap was nothing but meat and cheese. Nothing resembling enchilada sauce. The Carnitas burrito was a 2. Again, bland with nothing to make it memorable (in a good way). It's one of the few places that serves Mexican in Hanalei but do yourself a favor and stay away. I'll be surprised if this place is able to remain open a year from now. read more

I ordered the carne asada nacho fries which were good, but it took almost 40 minutes to get them. The girl at the front remembered me paying for them and said they must not have got it in the back. She sent back to the back and then went to ask them if they made any nacho fries. They said no and continued making plates. Instead of making mine the priority they continued with what they had and my ticket went to the end of the line. When they were finally done she told me that they made it earlier and someone else must have took them, even though I heard the cooks tell her they didn't make it. There was no offer of a refund, discount, not even a free soda. I would definitely stay vigilant when ordering here. read more

I'm giving this place five stars! What a treasure in the middle of Hanalei. They were slammed when we arrived around 1:30pm and our order took about 45 minutes to arrive. The fish tacos were out of this world. My son's burger wasn't very good but who orders a burger from a Mexican restaurant??!! I highly recommend this. OMGOSH!! Does not even begin to tell you just how delicious their food is!! I am a vegetarian and I ordered the bean and cheese burrito with rice. My husband had the same thing but we made his "Mojado Style" and he said it was awesome!! The burritos were huge and so filling! Honestly, I'm kinda glad we didn't find them sooner. I stopped in for dinner yesterday as the family wanted some Mexican food. We ordered four meals and an appetizer. Instead of the Carne Asada burrito I asked to make it a Carne Asada plate which was not listed on the menu; however, it's the Carne Asada with rice and beans on a plate. My son also asked for the same. When the food came it was just two Carne Asada sides without rice and beans. The owner or manager was cooking in the back and the cashier appeared to be an employee who was also helping with handing out the food. The owner/manager informed me that they charged me for 2 Carne Asada sides instead of a plate. Instead of fixing my order by providing the additional sides, she took both sides of Carne Asada back after they were handed to me and I touched them and made one plate of Carne Asada from one of the sides and offered to make me another plate by charging me more. I decided to settle for the Carne Asada Fries (appetizer) and move on with life. We were all shocked at the horrible service we received. The funny part is that they ask for a tip before you even get your food. I gave them a tip and I got horrible service anyway. Lesson learned. Tip after and never before. The food is average at best. Food and taste is outstanding. The fish tacos were so good my wife and I ordered them on both occasions. Warning; takes a long time to get your food due to staffing shortage, but worth the wait. Not uncommon to drive 30 minutes out of your way when they are "open" and discover they are actually closed. Suggestion to anyone interested in eating here: do not rely on the hours posted on their website, on google maps, yelp, nor apple maps. Do NOT order the guacamole! $13.56 for about 2 tablespoons and then a bunch of chips. Outrageous even for a vacation spot. Gave it back for a refund--because before I ordered it I specifically asked how much guacamole was in a large order. She showed me a container that could hold at least a cup. Then when I checked the box of guacamole and chips you could barely see any green stuff. When I asked for a refund they were extremely rude and tried to justify it by saying "do you know how much 150 avocados cost me!" I said yes, I live in Hawaii and I never paid $13.56 for 2 tablespoons of guacamole. No aloha here. Just a rip off--they could have been honest upfront. Sad. read more

I've been to hanalei bay about 5 times now over the last 15 years and I love it. This place used to be a burger joint, but has now become a delicious Mexican restaurant. I'm from California and have grown up eating some of the best Mexican/Latin food one can find outside Mexico, and this place was a solid 8.5/10 on taste alone. Service was a liitttllee slow but not horrible, and well worth the wait. went on a Monday evening though so not a hot time of day. We had the fresh fish-of-the-day tacos (Mahi Mahi) and they were delicious, as well as shrimp, carne asada, and carnitas tacos as well. I also had a carne asada quesadilla and it was amazing. The fish tacos had more on them (pico de gallo, avocado, crema, etc) which made them better than the carne asada and carnitas tacos, but the others were still good. Portions were large and prices were totally reasonable. Server was delightful, Spanish speaking, and super patient. Love to see the representation from the home culture, it really shows in how good the food was. Ambiance was fine, it's just a standing window-order kinda place. But had lovely Koa wood benches, beautiful view cause hanalei bay is just so gorgeous on its own. Definitely check this spot out when you're in hanalei bay. read more

Very unexpressed. This restaurant was more eager to close their shop 2 hours early than they were to not only serve us but two other groups behind us. As soon as we ordered they closed off all access to the restaurant, refusing to serve anyone else. They didn't give us the correct meals and wouldn't serve us any drinks due to their machine that had already been shut down for cleaning. This place is a great value and the food is great. We got the nachos with beef. So flavorful with fresh chips and a heaping mound of toppings and melted cheese. I also got the grilled fish taco and immediately wished I had ordered two because it was so good. My daughter got the carnitas burrito and loved it. It was a huge burrito. All of this food for just $35 including tip was mind-blowing. Now while it's not better than Mexican food in Houston, it's great island fare especially after a long day at the beach (we had just finished surfing lessons and were starving). We ate at 3 and didn't eat again all day because we were so stuffed from this meal. read more
