This is a must stop for us when we land in Kauai! Solid local plate lunches that don't skimp on portions. Service was good and fast. Walked in, ordered, and waited till the buzzer went off. Got the food and it looks the same like it always does! Ordered a beef stew and loco moco plate, a loco moco for my son, and a pumpkin crunch. All were great choices and nothing was left. My wife proclaimed the pumpkin crunch to be the best she's ever had. A classic must stop in Kauai! Don't skip this place!

I'm crying inside because I miss their food so much! One of the best loco moco's I've ever had. And that gravy... its gold! On our last day on the island, we wanted to take some home with us. But how do we get the gravy past TSA?? The rule was no more than 3.3oz per container. Tyren to the rescue! He suggested putting the gravy in 2 small clear plastic containers that were under 3oz each! Hurray! It worked. All that liquid gold made it through TSA and we were able to enjoy our loco moco in California. Great service. Small hole in the wall. Lots of grab n' go lunch boxes. Popular! OK, stop crying now :)

First stop after landing in Kauai was a quick lunch at Mark's Place. I *love* loco mocos, so as soon as I saw this place near the airport, I knew I had to come. We stopped by for Thursday lunch around 12:30 and it wasn't too packed. You order inside and then find a seat at one of the picnic benches outside. It was hot and humid so most people were sitting in the limited shaded spots. I got the loco moco ($18.49 for regular) and my friend got the teriyaki chicken sandwich ($9.49). Our food was ready after ~10 minutes. The loco moco was super solid. Everything tasted great and I was a big fan of both the patty and the gravy. The only thing is that the patty was a bit burnt on the underside. Also portions were a bit off, as they gave way too much rice (couldn't finish it all) and gravy wasn't enough. I could've easily used twice the amount of gravy. Interestingly, they also give some chow mein as a side in addition to the mac salad. I tried some but personally found it too sweet. My friend liked his teriyaki chicken sandwich. It's on the smaller side but makes for a great snack if you're not super hungry.

(Late review - July 2024) This place was recommended by a friend since it was the hubby and my first time in Kauai. Only outside seating is available. Portion size are large. Decent price for the portion. Flavors were pretty good. Service was quick. Bottom line: Easy and quick fix for some local Hawaiian food.

Best hamburger patty and Korean chicken is always great, but price has definitely gone up in the last few years

The chicken was so crispy and there were pieces of skin too! This was a good plate lunch spot and bonus with the fried noodles under the chicken. Ordering was easy and the wait wasn't too long. Mostly a takeout place, but there are a few picnic tables outside with umbrellas.

Firstly small parking lot but you'll eventually find a spot as people coming and going. The service is pleasant nothing crazy. Took about 15mins to get our food. Couldn't take a photo of the masubis as I demolished them. We went straight here after landing and it was delicious. The mini katsu came with noodles, rice and ketchup. Even the noodles were well seasoned and the katsu was delicious. We also got the combo box with beef and Korean chicken which was also really good! Restaurant has no seating it's more of a to go place that has tables outside and roosters to enjoy!

Our group ordered bentos from Mark's for a group activity and they were very good. Traditional Hawaiian bentos with spam, hot dog, beef teriyaki, fried chicken. I can see why it's a popular place. I'll have to stop by their actual restaurant for a meal.

This was an awesome first stop after flying into Kaua'i. Food was cheap, flavorful and good value. Make sure you come here when you hit the island!

Ah yes - my final meal in my Hawaii saga. It was a grand finale indeed - got the Hamburger Steak Loco Moco and man was it wonderfully delicious. A sloppy mish mash of perfectly blended flavors - a perfectly cooked pattie topped with a runny egg that ran perfectly texture-wise with the also ever so flowy gravy atop the dish. A generous and affordable helping - friendly staff that served it that were really patient with me while I decided what to order. Wish it had more seating, but that is such a small and unimportant complaint - had a picnic table out front all to myself and got to reflect on everything I had done to that point, and it just felt like the perfect Hawaiian comfort food and finale. Authentic, affordable, accessible, and delicious. Thankful I got to try this place!

"Lies" Hours of Operation "Gone Fishing"!
    John C.

Now this place is on most every locals list to eat. I have to tell you as a tourist it was the hardest place I've tried to eat at ever! Beware the hours posted are NOT the hours they are open. I had to find out the hard way after three trips during the week they are open when they feel like it and closed to go fishing whenever they feel like it. I guess it's a local thing? Even when you call and talk to them several times they lie a tell you 6pm and close at 2 or 3! "Gone Fishing" Was it worth the 3rd attempt to eat there? The food was good and the portions plenty full. It's definitely a local restaurant accommodating the locals and surrounding businesses/employees for lunch hours.

Marks Place is very unique in their local dishes of plate lunches. They cook everything to order and they have daily specials too.

Are the outside picnic tables open again?

Aloha Chuck, As of this moment we have kept it closed as the covid cases are still on a rise on Kauai. Our main focus is trying to keep all of our customers and staff safe…

Are there good gluten-free options? For instance, can/do they use GF tamari (soy sauce)?

They did have those options ! Great place and benches outside

I ordered the teriyaki chicken plate and my hubby got the garlic shrimp plate. Everything had really good flavor, the rice was perfect, and the macaroni salad had just the right amount of mayo. The teriyaki sauce was really yummy. I prefer my chicken without the skin so I removed it but it was cooked very well and it came off easily. My hubby enjoyed his plate too. The portions are a good size too - you could probably share one plate if you're not that hungry. I saved half of mine for later and ended up eating it cold cause we didn't have a microwave, but it was still so delicious! We even got some fun chex mix snax to eat while we waited. We had a view of the ocean. It was pretty high waves after a nearby tropical storm so that was fun to watch. The photo ops are incredible here. They have wonderful seating overlooking the water. Would be great to come here just for drinks. We started with an ahi sashimi appetizer. We pretty much get ahi sashimi at every restaurant in Hawaii. It was good. The hawaiian painkiller drink was nice. Not too strong. For entrees, I picked Kampachi which came with bok choy. Although the portion looked small, it was a good size. Very flavorful. I had a hard time picking between 3 fish entrees. This one worked out well. My wife had a shrimp farfalle pasta. She enjoyed it. When we went to order dessert, they brought us out a lava cake like dessert with happy anniversary written in chocolate on the plate. Complimentary and such a nice touch! Extremely disappointing experience at Hualani. We planned this dinner as a special family…read moreexperience and arrived a few minutes before our reservation. While waiting for our table, we stood right outside taking 4-5 quick family photos--something I think most people do while on vacation. Unfortunately, while we were literally just a few feet away, the hostess gave away the ocean-view table that had been intended for us without ever coming over to get us or communicating with us. That lack of communication completely changed the experience. We were then seated at a table with an awful view--essentially looking at bushes. At an ocean-view resort, that is not what you expect, especially when you specifically planned a family dinner there. We spoke with the hostess stand, but there was no meaningful effort to accommodate us. After we were already upset, the manager eventually came over and offered another table--but only if we waited another 45 minutes. We were also offered a high-top table, which simply isn't practical when you're dining with four young children. The entertainment made the poor seating even more obvious. When the luau dancers came through, our family literally had to get up from our table to see the performance. That is how obstructed our view was. I want to be clear that our server was wonderful and completely at no fault. She provided great service and did everything she could. The issue was the hostess stand, the lack of communication, and the complete lack of ownership or accommodation after the mistake happened. People don't come to a beautiful ocean-view resort to spend their special family dinner staring at bushes. What makes this especially frustrating is that our original ocean-view table was right there, and we were never given the courtesy of being told, "Your table is ready." We were taking a few family photos--not disappearing for an hour. For a restaurant at this level, I expected much better judgment, communication, and customer service recovery. Unfortunately, the experience left a very bad impression, and I would not return to Hualani or recommend it for a special occasion.
