Several years ago we would buy HuliHuli chicken from a man who had built a large grill on the side of the road. It was really good, and we were disappointed when he retired. We heard about Richie, but the last two years could not find him. This year, success! Our first visit to the truck we got 2 Hull Huli chicken halves, so we could have it 2 nights, with leftovers for lunch. At first bite we almost lost our minds! Smoky, tasty, juicy chicken, even the breast was fabulous! Then we came up with a plan - to buy another 1/2 and freeze it and take it home so we have a good dinner the first night. It's ready to go! It was good! Chicken tasted fresh. We got there a little after closing time and they served us anyway. Lucky us there was 1 quarter chicken left. We took it so we could try the hype. Since we had eaten so much fish during our trip we were looking for some good bbq chicken. (You are kind of reminded every day since there are so many chickens around LOL). So in looking through Yelp we saw Richie's. Since it is a food truck we were not sure exactly where it was. After reviewing the most recent reviews we saw it was right down the street where we were staying. It was in the area by Haole Girl Island Sweets. Everyone mentioned getting there early as the close once they sellout. They usually have the Huli Huli Chicken on Friday and Saturday but check to see. Quite a few people were already seated at the picnic table when we arrived around 11:30am. We were greeted right away and ordered the half chicken with macaroni salad and a roll. We stood by the grill area looking at all the good food being prepared. Smelled like heaven. When we got our food we were amazed at how much was there. Large portions. They serve it with a pineapple white sauce that is so tasty. The macaroni salad was good as well. Also some white rice on the side. Best chicken we have had in a while. Thanks to Richie! Double the love. We had to come back and eat here again before leaving the island. On the weekends they have daily specials and we tried the teriyaki beef this time around. Service is swift and we happily grabbed a nearby picnic table and dug in. Their chicken is delicious. Driving through Kapa'a and seen this food truck off to a side parking lot and the smell automatically caught our attention. We were greeted by a nice lady taking orders at the window and decided to go with the Chicken plate and a rib plate. They were out of greens which was a bummer but we just got rice and mac salad for the sides which was okay. The flavor was amazing! The bbq was soooo good, not that it needed it but it was a good taste on the side. Mac salad was good. Ribs were tender, flavorful and juicy. We went to Richie's a second time and I cannot say enough about this place and the owners. First, we order Kalua pork loco. SOO delicious. Second, the owners really show the true spirit of Hawaii. They are so kind, warm, welcoming and they even remembered us! Truly some of the kindest people that I have met and that makes the experience that much better. Big eater alert!!! Huli Huli chicken is one of my all time island favs. Richie is not open every day of the week....So be sure to look for the red food truck with the banner out in front. He is only open W,F, Sat from 10-3 or until they sell out. Sundays they now have breakfast.. pancakes 2 for $8., Plates are $18 for half a chicken (and they are wayyyyy plumper than Costco chicken as well as fresher) with Mac salad and either a green salad or rice for sides AND a roll. Clearly ,it is enough to feed two people. The pineapple white sauce is tasty as well but I do not like anything competing with the smokiness of the flavor. Benches are available If you choose to eat there or take home containers are no extra charge. BBQ pork ribs with lychee bbq sauce is the second item on the menu but no combos are currently available. We came here after hearing about it on a couple of Kauai pages we follow on FB + Yelp reviews. We were staying right down the street and smelled the smoke (makes this Southerner believe it's authentic) as we drove by. Finally stoped and got the Huli Huli Chicken and a rack of ribs. They're in Kapa'a with a yellow truck attached. You can really taste the smoke on the meat especially with the chicken. The sauces it comes with are really unique and compliments well.
