This place is the best shave ice I've ever had, and I've tried a lot on Oahu. The best part about this was that I asked for Li-Hing and he said "Regular or Crack-Seed Li-Hing?" I LOVE Li-Hing so of course I said Crack Seed, and it did not disappoint. His prices have been the same for a long time now and they are quite reasonable. You'd never expect to find shave ice this good in a Big Save parking lot, but that's the best part about it. He also puts them in these pretty paper cups, a lot less wasteful than the normal plastic or styrofoam. I will definitely be back!

Hands-down thee best shave Ice in Kaua'i!!! Syrups are so different from all the artificial ones you find everywhere else- you can literally see AND taste the difference of the quality ingredients here! Aaron is just a doll- the most genuine, kind, and gentle soul I've encountered on this island... I would come here for Shave ice just to give him business because he just seems like such a good person! But lucky for anyone in Kauai that not only are you getting the best shave ice you'll find ANYWHERE, you're also supporting a great local business/person! Go out of your way to make sure to stop here if you're visiting the island- you won't regret it!!! *TAKE AARONS SUGGESTIONS ABOUT WHICH FLAVORS GO WELL TOGETHER/WHICH ONES TO PUT SNOW-CAP ON!*

This is our favorite shave ice spot! We make sure we stop by every time we're on the island of Kauai. We come for the delicious, homemade shave ice flavors with snow cap but more importantly, we come to enjoy the wonderful aloha spirit and talk story with Aaron! Sometimes Aaron even breaks out the ukulele and plays a tune! Today there was a steady stream of customers, mostly locals, each person met with a friendly greeting and more often than not Aaron already knew their order! If you want a tasty and very affordable shave ice served with aloha spirit, try Hawaiian Blizzard! Here are some photos from 2010 and from our visit today.

I have to say that Hawaiian Blizzard is probably the BEST -- yes, THE BEST, shaved ice on Kauai. No, it's not because of the amount of flavors they have or how extravagant the shop is. It is also not because of the portions you get there. It is because .. the friendliest man on this Earth works here. That's right! The owner! We never got his name but from the previous Yelp reviews, his name is Aaron. Hawaiian Blizzard was the FIRST stop we made right after we landed in Kauai. We wanted some shaved ice and when we got there, we were a little puzzled. It was just a tiny cart! The price wasn't so bad when we went .. I believe it was $3 each? There was only once size. There weren't a whole lot of flavors for you to choose from if you're used to the bigger stands. But I have to say, Aaron is super nice. The way he talks and the way he smiles, you can tell it's really genuine. It's so genuine to the point where I'm not used to it at all. I'm not saying that its is uncommon -- well, maybe it is. Every day life can be so taxing on everyone and you meet so many different people in your life. I don't know about you but a majority of people I tend to meet typically have ulterior motives. It's a dog eat dog world out there but it's good to know that when you're on vacation, it's not that way .. and Aaron sure shows you that. Aaron would offer us a snow cap for free on our shaved ice and would offer it to us again when we're half-way through as well. Oh and another plus is...his ice is the smoothest of the ones I've tried on Kauai. It is really fine and not chunky at all :) Definitely visit his stand when you're on this island because I definitely will come back if I vacation in Kauai again.

What you need to know: - located in the parking lot of the Kapaa Shopping Center, near the Big Save Market - be aware of the short hours of operation, he said sometimes he might stick around a little after 5pm if there are customers - Uncle is the nicest and happiest guy ever! He has an infinite amount of aloha to share so chat with him! - My favorite story he shared with us is that when he finished business school, he had stressful jobs and had 2 ulcers. He realized he had to change his life, that's when he returned to Kauai and opened up a shave ice stand - it's been 36 years and no more ulcers! - this shave ice stand is very traditional, just dishing out impeccably fluffy shave ice and syrups, and of course snow cap. What we ordered: - $3 for a shave ice - you can order up to three flavors and Uncle will come around and give you a refill of the snow cap, if you want. Uncle distributes the shave machines and syrups so he knows which machines can provide the softest and fluffiest ice. I was very impressed with how fine his ice was. - I loved my experience with Hawaiian Blizzard, but what would have given it 5 stars is if he had ice cream, azuki beans and other toppings. But he's a traditionalist!

Must try! The best shave ice on the island IMO, since I am more of a shave ice purist and many of the more well known shave ice places on kauai appear to serve artisan/organic offerings. This place offers delicious classic hawaiian shave ice. The price point is very affordable and you will be supporting a small business. They are a bit hard to find - we were looking for them and couldn't spot them under the awning on the left hand side of the strip mall when doing our first loop. Don't give up, they are there, just slightly hidden!

Went to JoJo's in Waimea: pretty good. Went to Ono Shave Ice in Kapa'a: diverse flavors like ginger and green tea. Hawaiian Blizzard, the cart in the Big Save parking lot, has the best shave ice. Flavors are pretty standard but Aaron serves up the softest shave ice. Not slushy. Not icy. Sort of fluffy. Like a dairy-less ice cream (unless you get the snow top.) I had POG and lychee. Wonderful!

We found it! --- HANDS DOWN the best shave ice in Kauai! $3 for everything (you can have up to 3 flavors) and Aaron would even walk around asking if you want more snow cap (condensed milk) for free! His ice is very fine and the same consistency as in Ululani's in Maui/Big Island. Don't look for a shop as his is only a food cart in front of Big Save supermarket.

Located to the side of Big Save and across the way from Chevron. This shave ice stand is a small operation but the flavors are great and the ice fairly finely shaved. Unfortunately, the many add-ons available at other locations (ice cream, azuki beans, Mochi balls) are not available here. Friendly service and a worthwhile and low-key stop. Cash only.

I guess you really can't judge a book by it's cover, or lack thereof in this case. Standing bare with only the owner and his Ice maker, Hawaiian Blizzard is the paragon of all hole-in-the-wall places. It's conveniently located next to Big Save Market, the only thing that really gives it away is the approximately 6 foot wide banner behind the stand. The nice man behind the stand suggested some kinda shave ice that I let him build for me, with pineapple, mango, lilikoi and capped with condensed milk. The ice was finely shaved, not packed in, and the owner was kind enough to re-cap my shave ice with condensed milk when I was halfway through. It was heavenly. I was eating off clouds for $3. Best shave ice on the island, hands down.

    Best shaved ice period.

The best shaved ice on island at the most reasonable price. No gimmicks just straight up good old fashioned shaved ice. Served by the nicest person on the island.

This is the best shave ice I've had in Hawaii!! This place was just a little stand outside of Nom Kauai. The owner was sooo nice and kind and really put a ton of love in our shave ice. My shave ice was super fluffy, not too icy and only 3$! I loved it. I got lilikoi, pineapple and coconut with an iced cap. It was delicious!! He was even nice enough to add extra ice cap! Really great shave ice!

The best in Hawaii, not just Kapaa

The Best Shave ICe on the island of Kauai ! WE have shared many happy afternoons here quietly enjoying the shave ice and the different flavors available . Oh boy what a treat , really ! Its right off a main road and you cannot miss it. Parking lot was a bit small, but there was plenty of parking. AMBIANCE: When I went there was plenty of seating. A bit dead, but I also did go pretty early. There were a bunch of decor of older American pop culture like Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, etc. But also Hawaiian themed decor (obviously). SERVICE: You gotta walk up to the front to order. I was approached almost immediately as soon as I walked up to the menu on the screen. The girl working was super friendly and welcoming. I made my order and she gave me a pager for when my food was ready. FOOD: I ordered the chili pepper chicken, which was recommended from the girl at the counter. My friend ordered the ahi katsu. The chili pepper chicken was good! It was crispy and extremely flavorful. It was slightly too salty for my taste, but luckily the rice does help balance it out. Some of the crispness was sacrificed for the sauce, but it was overall still pretty crispy. I loved that they used boneless chicken thigh. I was expecting bones or lots of breading but it actually had a perfect ratio. I wasn't much a fan of the mac salad. It was like a mix of mac and potato salad, but more like a potato salad. I'm not big on potato salad, so that makes sense. My friend's ahi katsu was alright in my opinion. The sauce that's on it was good and enjoyed all the flavors. The tuna was just a bit overcooked to my liking, but idk how else one would make a katsu without overlooking it too much. Maybe bread the fish and freeze it before frying? Idk man, I'm not a chef lol but the tuna would definitely be better if it was less cooked. OVERALL: Honestly, I would still come here again. I still enjoyed the meal and the service was pretty quick. Both items were both worth trying. All the flavors were there and the little things I didn't like were just personal preferences. Its a great place to pick up a lunch plate and enjoy it at the beach.
