When Covid hit I saw this place going up at the corner of railroad park. Have always loved getting a donut from Hero at Pepper Place Farmers market on weekends and never really had the chance to stop by their homewood shop since I'm just usually not out towards that direction. I stopped by the previous day loving the interior of this place. A nice soft neon light and a clean marble colored interior. Everyone was very friendly and i was surprised to find that they didn't just serve donuts at this location. I grabbed a menu and came back the next day to get some lunch. I got a single Hero Burger add lettuce tomatoes (at no extra cost). I really enjoyed it and had a pleasant chat with who I presume is the owner who also still remenbered me coming in the previous day. The fries are just basic crinkle cut fries but almost everything on their menu has their fluffy Hero buns which I absolutely love! The buns and their OG donuts are extremely fluffy and delicious. No need to say, their donuts are really good. I've always loved Hero but you'll have to give them a shot yourselves and see if you like their style. I would like to add though that the donuts at this location are beyond fresh. On the way out I grabbed a menu to check out their breakfast/brunch and looks like I'm going to have to pop back in soon! read more

Great first experience at Hero at Railroad Park. They're requiring masks (when not eating/drinking) and limiting seating for COVID safety precautions, which is great! The staff could not have been nicer. I got the Hero House Salad and added grilled chicken. It was very fresh, and the chicken was great quality. However, there were some pretty large pieces of dill on it (which was not listed on the menu), so if you're not a dill fan, you may not want to dill with it. The ranch dressing tasted homemade and way better than ordinary ranch. Only complaint was the salad was a little small for $12, but I would order it again if I wasn't very hungry. I literally don't see what you're all seeing in the ridiculously overpriced donuts. I had 10 donut holes that cost $4.29 and they tasted like every other donut hole that you can get anywhere for $1.50. The specialty donuts were ok, but not spectacular enough to cost $4.29 each and the thing they call a kolache, which is actually a pig in the blanket, was basically a hot dog wiener with cheese wrapped in a bun of some sort and it tasted old and it was clearly microwaved. I was not impressed at all. The atmosphere is cool and they have fresh squeezed OJ which I didn't get to try because the machine was broken. I won't be back to try it though as it wasn't worth it at all. read more

Went last saturday. they need to figure out a better ordering space. It's crowded and constantly moving employees have to push their way through to the area that they make the dough in. Makes for an awkward time to order. The bread pudding donuts are delicious, but the burgers leave a bit to be desired. I ordered kettle chips with my burger and got a bag of stale chips. The burger was so drenched in mustard I had to take it apart and swipe some of it off. The burger buns are so good though! Second time I've tried a burger and have been disappointed. read more

My family stayed in Birmingham for one night on our way back home. I searched Google for a nice breakfast spot & I came across Hero Doughnuts. Walking in, we were greeted warmly by the owner. A great old school-diner vibe with great music playing, this was a perfect spot for us. The doughnuts were incredible, but that's just the beginning. I got a breakfast "bun" which was unbelievable! Think sausage+egg sandwich mixed with a handcrafted burger = Yum! Tasty coffee drinks too (my wife and I both got oatmilk vanilla latte's). My wife and daughter shared a breakfast plate with their signature folded eggs (perfectly made) bacon & without question the best little hashbrown squares I've ever had. If you live in Birmingham, this is a must visit for breakfast or lunch. And if you're traveling through, DEFINITELY make a pit stop. It's easy to jump off 65 and get right to it & hop back on the interstate. We travel through Birmingham on road trips atleast twice per year & this will now be a staple in our trips! read more

We've been to this location twice. First time the service was not good and the doughnuts were stale. Today my husband and I came and I asked "do you have anything that's just fresh from the oven?" And the manager very frustratedly said "what? I don't understand." I asked again if there was anything hot and fresh and he just said "No". Extremely rude. Don't recommend. Terrible. Came mid afternoon for a simple cup of coffee. $4.25 coffee needs to be good for drip (live in Los Angeles for 5 years and never paid that). Was given a cup and directed to a thermos of old coffee that was so empty couldn't even fill my cup. Brought it to the cashier's attention and she attempted to fill my cup disregarding what I just told her. After several attempts it still could not fill my cup so I asked for a fresh brewed cup since it was apparently a hassle. Since it was a hassle I asked for an americano which was also on the menu for $4.25 but told "I'll do it for the same price". (Hope so) ended up with a cup of coffee so terrible I just poured it out minutes later. Will never return. read more

When you go here, because you simply must, be sure to order the Vanilla filled donut. I am not a big fan of filled donuts but when I got here one early morning after walking the pups on a visit to town I just had an itch for it when I saw it. Literally the best donut I have ever eaten. The filling was a perfect taste explosion of both butter and vanilla. The sugary textured outside made for such a surprising little crunch to the fluffy inside of the dough. That was all I was able to try on this trip but I would assume all other items are just as good, I will certainly be back for the rest o the menu! Literally 10/10. I love this place. We got 4 donuts. The banana pudding, blueberry crumble, sugar and spice, and the original. Their flavors are to the tee! I've never tasted anything more accurate. They gave us a free hashbrowns with cheese due to a mistake, and it's literally the best hashbrowns I've had! My boyfriend said the cheese was amazing as well. Excellent service and food! We ordered a breakfast sandwich (pepper jelly was delicious!), fries (crispy well-seasoned crinkle fries), a cinnamon roll and sidekicks (doughnut holes). They also have a full bar at this location. Plenty of seating indoor and outside. Great spot to grab doughnuts to-go or stop in for a quick breakfast or lunch. Staff was efficient and all were wearing masks (Covid-19). Most importantly, the food was all delicious. I went in to get donuts at hero DONUTS, and they were OUT. So, respectfully asked what else they had because I had never been there and the women replied "uh food" in an extremely rude tone. I asked what the Sunday special was because I did not know what "superhero minis" were and she told me to look on the board to see the special. Then handed me a cup of creamer with no instructions and had to figure out how to use their coffee machine and where it was. The customer service was horrible, and they were out of donuts. 0/10 would never recommend. read more

Wow what a horrible kolache overall. I asked for a jalapeños polish sausage kolache and it was just awful. I slice of jalapeño on the outside top, the polish sausage on inside was small and cold. Wife ordered the jalapeño kolache, I had the folded egg and cheese breakfast bun and our son had the hero breakfast plate. He didn't stop eating until his plate was empty. This was my second time at Hero Doughnuts! It's a great place with a very modern interior. The food is really well made also, it's very different and has unique twists on common items such as their donuts, chicken sandwiches and breakfast foods. I had the Super Crunch sandwich and ranch fries, and we got some donuts to-go. They have a really cool selection of donuts, however they sell out really fast. By the time we got there which was about 12 in the afternoon, they only had 3 options left. It is quite cleanly, the staff is friendly, and they are doing well with COVID precautions. They have markings on the floor on where to stand in line and also do not fill all of the tables. It is also very conveniently located next to Railroad Park, we were able to walk there from our apartment. read more

I rarely give reviews but I've loved this place since it's inception in Homewood. I love the new location downtown, however my best friend and I had a less than savory encounter with the bartender last Sat. We ordered margaritas because they were out of mimosas. But upon tasting them they were very bland and full of grapefruit more like a Paloma so we took them back to ask if they were margaritas and she said yes and then I said with grapefruit and she says yes it's in the description of the drink in a nasty tone and walked away. Then my friend came and called her back over and said that regardless of the grapefruit they didn't have a taste and wasn't good so what could we do to remedy it. She huffed rolled her eyes and said I'll get my manager. He was very pleasant and even said yeah these are more like palomas and gave us his suggestion which was amazing and we were satisfied. The bartender was just rude even another customer was frustrated with her. But all this to say their donuts and management are amazing but had this been my first experience I would have gave this place a 1 star. read more
