Decided to check out this cute shop after getting dinner in the Mountain Brook area, and was surprised at how fun this was! Sons absorbed the old Steel City Pops for OG Bham dessert fans. So you have access to the classic vanilla, buttermilk, coffee, and fruit pops we all know and love. The new addition is the fresh donuts made right in front of you by the servers. Mini, fluffy, and the perfect mouthful, these donuts come in lots of flavors, topped with flavored sugars and delightful jams. Will have to keep an eye out for their season flavors! Went for donuts after breakfast at Lady Bird Taco and was extremely surprised at the quality of this place! Donuts were made fresh in front of me and tasted incredible. As promised, we returned for the donuts! These were absolutely delicious little bites to snack on - the cinnamon sugar flavor with the vanilla creme on the side was just the perfect mix of spiced and sweet! They were freshly made right on front of us which is always a treat in of itself. Super warm and soft - would love to try more flavors! Sons Donuts is a nice little dessert place that will definitely satisfy a craving for donuts. I only got the donuts, but this place also does coffee and ice pops. I will say, compared to most donut places, there is a minimal selection here, but what makes them stand out is the fact that they only do mini donuts and somewhat personalize them with the glaze flavors they have. Some of them also come with a dipping sauce, which is not common for donuts. They also do seasonal flavors like most other donut places. I decided to do the two flavor option and got the cinnamon sugar with vanilla cream and a milk chocolate glazed. Both of them were very good and fresh; the cinnamon was my favorite, though. Getting the two-flavor option, you get 8 mini donuts altogether, and I would say the price is a little high for mini donuts, and you aren't even getting a full dozen. Another thing I'd like to point out is that it does close a little early, so if you wanted them as a late-night dessert, you'd have to get them earlier, and they don't taste as good cold. However, that is a preference, as some people see donuts as a breakfast item; I personally see them as a dessert. The location is in a nice area, and there are many different walkable stores surrounding. The service was also very friendly. Overall, I would go here again, and I'd recommend trying, but it's not something I'd get very often. read more

Heard people rave about Sons Donuts and decided to try it for myself today. Cute little storefront with inside and outside seatings. Employees are very nice and friendly. They make the mini donuts fresh after you order so it's best if you can eat them on the spot to get the full effect. We ordered a dozen at a little over a dollar each. For the flavors, we chose the salted caramel, the apple, and the strawberry. They were all pretty good. Their sauces are a highlight for sure. These mini donuts are cake textured, dipped in a kind of sugar mixture depending on what you order, and then topped with topping or sauce. Sons Donuts have some stiff competition here in Birmingham including Heavenly Donuts, Hero, etc. While I don't personally love these more than other full-sized donuts, it was fun to try for sure. read more

Had this one bookmarked and decided to check them out on a day off. The mini donuts were a great addition to a gift I put together. I went with The Carter (strawberry sugared) and the Glazed, classic vanilla. Although part of a gift I did keep a few for myself and they were enjoyable treats. Cute new place located right next door to Big Spoon Creamery. I enjoyed their unique twist on donuts! I thought that the dipping sauce they add would come on the side but they don't ask if you'd like it on the side but instead just drizzle it on top. This took away for me but it was still pretty good. I tried the Fisher which is a cinnamon donut with vanilla bean cream on top and I also tried the carter which is a strawberry sugared donut with "sons" sauce, a sweet caramel looking sauce but I'm not sure the exact flavor. The donut shop also has inside seating and looked like they had their own brand of beverages. It's worth a try. read more

These were THE BEST donuts i've ever had. ever. they are small but so filling and literally melt in your mouth. i came on a tuesday afternoon so i did not encounter any long wait, and was able to sit inside for as long as i wanted. the staff was really nice, and being that this is a new establishment, very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients of their different dipping sauces. the guy at the register recommended "the carter" which is the strawberry sugar with the sons sauce (made with lemon and passion fruit) and it was an automatic homerun for me. i love all things lemony/citrusy/tart, so these were my favorites. my two additional flavors were "the tripp" and "the fisher." these were really good also. i can defffff see this establishment growing into a chain with more shops around the city. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking to satisfy their sweet tooth! read more

When the shop was in Avondale we would travel with our family all the way down 280 because it was that good and it's such a fun family experience. They recently moved to mountain brook and have a bigger location with the same great quality. I love the family friendly atmosphere. The kids love being able to see them made in the shop and that they are the perfect size. They are always fresh, yummy and great customer service. Sons Donuts came to serve food at my church's college/youth night with their food truck and not a single person I talked with had any form of criticism (unless it was the small issue of "being too sweet", which has never resonated with me). They have a variety of products including donuts, locally roasted coffee, espresso, pops, and a milk bar with house-made flavored milk shots. I actually don't remember the name of what I ordered because I asked the cashier for the exact same thing as whatever my friend ahead of me ordered. I received what seemed like two cinnamon donuts, a strawberry jelly donut, and a caramel donut. Their donuts are miniature, which is very cute but also dangerous because you can eat so many without realizing how many calories you are intaking! I also ordered their iced coffee which was unfortunately a little too bitter, but good for those who are big fans of coffee. I actually loved their diverse array of donuts so much that I went back to the "counter" and asked where they were located so I could support their business more often. I was told that they have a permanent location, which brought me so much joy and I'm excited to go check it out. But for now, my review only entails the food truck. Delicious new donut shop in Avondale right next to and by the same folks as Big Spoon. I love the concept of having a sort of curated flavor of mini-donut paired with a sauce to perfectly complement it! The donuts are small, so order 4-8 per person depending on your hunger level and how many flavors you want to try! Everything was delicious... I think my favorite was the fisher (cinnamon cardamom donuts with vanilla cream) and the tart lemon donuts with the strawberry elderflower jam. I did feel like I couldn't necessarily taste the lemon flavor in the donut but nevertheless they were absolutely yummy! I appreciated that when I wasn't able to finish all of my donuts they gave me a to-go box with a whole new set of to-go sauces, something they definitely didn't have to do. My only critiques are minor and are certain to be first-week things that will be wrinkled out soon... the menu is a little hard to understand as it is written and led to a couple of customers seeming confused how to order... but basically for every 4 donuts you order you can pick a flavor of donut and a sauce... either from their recommendations (the seasonal pairings or the five sons) or you can mix and match. My only other recommendation is that with covid, I would probably dispense the sugar for coffee in a different fashion than a bowl with sugar cubes with no tongs or anything.
