All around very mediocre experience Food came out. I ordered an omelette. I had to use napkins to mop up the grease and water the mushrooms let off. The fruit was from yesterday, but what rubbed me the wrong way was the staff. Two in particular. A young man (if the manager is reading this he was white with tattoos) who was obnoxious, unprofessional, and kept answering his phone on the floor while working. This is a business. No rules applied to him as I overheard him talking about a customer in a rude way. My server was a young gal who was more interested in flirting with the man at the bar than help me. Took my order. I really wanted to like this place. Their food is great, but their service is very poor. We've been here a couple times and the wait staff has messed up a few times. Once they messed up our bill and we had bought another table a cinnamon roll for a birthday. Second and most recent they ran out of the food for one of our orders, but didn't tell us until the other food came out to the rest of our party. No apology, just a we"ll replace it with something else, while everyone sits waiting to eat. Not to mention this was over 45 mins waiting for food. The waitress didn't even bother to come back to check in on how the food was or the replacement. My husband and I went there this morning to have breakfast. We asked for a booth. There were 2 available. However, we were denied. We were told that we could not be seated there because they "expected" to be busy soon because of graduation. I don't know any morning graduations, but ok. 4 people came in after us, no graduates in sight, and they were given a booth. There was no one waiting to be seated. There was still one open booth, and we were again still refused to be seated. They had many open 4 top tables any "graduation party" could have been seated at. The hostess was rude and snickered when we left. If she was the owner, she was an )awful person. People like her need to do better. If she wasn't the owner, she should be moved to wash dishes. Service was very good. We have enjoyed the food on previous occasions. But this time we were very disappointed. Ordered the Grandpa skillet, it was tasteless, minute pieces of green and red bell pepper about a tablespoon full and sausage in extremely small bits, maybe another tablespoon full, over a boat load of sliced potatoes then covered in a bland white gravy and a bit of cheese and over easy eggs. Salt & pepper did not help. $3.99 for coffee and $3.79 for iced tea. The veggie skillet was not much better. Just left the KOA campgrounds and wanted to get breakfast in the way home. They had outdoor seating and menu looked decent. My travel buddy enjoyed her meal but I was underwhelmed. Bigger isn't always better. The pancake was huge but rubbery and dense there's no coming back from that rookie mistake. I usually say something about my dissatisfaction but decided to let it be. Hen House Cafe is approximately 45 minutes drive from our house, but we wanted to surprise our teenager with the Hen House famous giant pancakes. We arrived expecting to wait for a table. Our group of 5 was seated immediately, which surprised me at 9:30 on a Sunday morning. Immediately I noticed that our waitress seemed unhappy. In response I thought we would be kind and polite. It would turn her day around. As we ordered she became further unhappy to learn that my son would be having the giant pancakes. She tried repeatedly to change his mind. I explained that we drove over specifically for this dish. She informed us that the kitchen has a hard time making the giant pancakes because they require such a large amount of the cooktop. As a result it takes approximately 90 minutes to cook an order. I reiterated that we drove a distance specifically for this dish and although the delay is not ideal we would wait. I requested that she hold the rest of our breakfast orders until my son's pancakes could be made. I told her that we would like all of our meals served together. Unfortunately, each of our meals came out of the kitchen one at a time. Initially we thought she was bringing them out individually, but that all of the food was done in the kitchen. It quickly became apparent that she simply disregarded my request that our table be allowed to eat simultaneously. I decided to share my meal with my teen while waiting for his pancake order. Our waitress was right about the wait for pancakes. Once ordered it took nearly two hours to get them. They were not at all worth the wait- cold, chewy, and and difficult to cut through with a butter knife. Overall, we were disappointed in Hen House. This is one of our favorite breakfast spots and come here almost every weekend. Food is amazing. Staff is always super friendly and attentive, always checking on us and topping off our coffees before they are even empty. Atmosphere is cozy and has that hometown feel. It can get a little busy but that is for a reason and not a bad thing. They should have locked the doors and and said we are closed today. Sad. Gordon Ramsey needs to visit this location. I have never seen anything like this in my entire life. When it was ready she kept asking if we could switch to a table since she wanted to sit a bigger party at the booth. No I do NOT want to sit at the table right at the front door by the hostess podium. Stop asking me. We were there ahead of the bigger party. Not my problem. Also try to smile every once in a while. Anyways, to the food. I ordered the Paul Bunyan breakfast dish. Basic 2 eggs, potatoes, sausage, and 1/2 of french toast. The potatoes were undercooked and had never been introduced to salt. The french toast was literally 1 slice of battered white bread. Tasted okay but 1 slice is considered a half order? Wife ordered the steak and mushroom hash breakfast. Again the potatoes needed salt. There was nothing steak or mushroom about the dish. The "steak" was ground beef. She got 2 pieces of mushroom in the entire dish! Her side of toast was 1 slice. Perfectly seasoned potatoes with mushrooms, onions, bell peppers covered in house made sausage gravy that is so good I sincerely thought to ask if they dump the creamer from the small bucket on my table and just fill it with the gravy- you know, in case I needed it. Fortunately my self restraint and portion control mindedness prevailed. Initially I thought I might need ketchup, now I feel as though I should slap myself for having even the remotest notion to defile this culinary magnificence. Everything is made fresh, delicious and a test of willpower to not over indulge. Did I mention the friendly, accommodating and lighting fast service? I cannot put into adequate words how wonderful my brunch was! We started with the Churro Donuts (which I would drive from my home in North Phoenix to have again!). They were crisp on the outside and melt in your mouth perfection on the inside. Holy Mackarel were they good!! I chose an omelette that was not normally on the menu that had brie and crab meat. Unbelievable. So fluffy and cheesy. The portion was big...if you go home hungry that's a you problem. My friend had pancakes with a side of sausage and hash browns (if I am remembering correctly). The side was as plentiful as her main dish! The entire experience, and that includes the waitstaff, was superb. I am beyond sad that there isn't a location closer to me. Give me a break! The portion size on the chicken seems to have gone done as well. It's almost $20 with a reasonable tip and an overpriced drink. Red Robin, for example, charges $1.99 for unlimited iced tea. In addition the gravy on the chicken fried chicken was runny. I thought it was a bad day but I've been there 3 times since Covid and every time the gravy has been watered down. I am very disappointed. We went on a Sunday morning, so it was definitely busy with a line out the door and large groups waiting - so if your with more than two people during peak hours, it may be a bit of a wait. With two of us we were told about 30 minutes but we're seated working 5-10 - which was great!! After being seated we thought service was a bit slow although we recognize it was fairly busy there so I guarantee it was not a fault of the server but maybe a short staffing that day. With that, we also thought it was fairly loud. Not just with other customers but also the staff was loud yelling to others about taking food places or needing things at tables right in front and around us. We felt the coffee was not super strong - so if you add cream start with less and go from there. The taste was otherwise okay. Our server was on point with the refills. The food was good! We would definitely return here and I would be excited to try other items on the menu! We started with a cinnamon roll, which was good but a bit pricy. I did think the omelet was a bit smaller than expected but the flavor was great! Overall this is definitely a poppin place to go to that is well worth the wait. Large groups beware, the wait is probably longer during peak hours. So, this place seems to have somewhat of a following. I can't blame people either. The chicken fried chicken is quite possibly the best fried chicken I have ever had. My wife says it's a close second to the fried chicken we got while visiting Nashville. They have good coffee, and service, while sometimes a little slow (due to being busy, not a knock) is always happy and inviting. Their biscuits and gravy are fantastic as well. The only issue we had was their cinnamon roll. Most cinnamon rolls are a little dense, but theirs is super fluffy. It's also beyond sweet, my wife and I called it diabetes on a plate. I'm not going to get mad at it, because there are plenty of people who enjoy it, it just wasn't for me. Thanks for having a great spot to enjoy some amazing food. P.S. Our Recommendations were made by our server hunter who was a real gem. We also met Bailey the manager who clearly loves people and his job. I was dropping my car off at the Porsche dealership and looking for a breakfast place nearby. Yelp did not let me down - woo hoo this was a great find! We sat outside in the perfect weather and enjoyed a great cup of coffee while waiting for our food to arrive. I had the lemon blueberry mascarpone pancakes and my friend had the pumpkin pancakes. We shared an order of potatoes. Our food was crazy delicious and the potatoes were probably my favorite I have ever had - crispy with a hint of rosemary.
