1. This is an absolutely first rate pizzeria. I wish we had the Hearth in my home town. 2. Make that a smashingly superlatively good pizzeria. 3. I would disbelieve the Yelp reviews that complain about service. There may have been a server with an attitude back in some ancient period of history. If such a person ever existed, he or she is now gone. I received absolutely every attention possible either from the wait staff or from management. My order was taken quickly. My food came quickly. And this is when there was nearly a full house !!! On one issue - the house was out of a key ingredient for a drink. A manager came and apologized and after we worked it out brought me an alternative drink that was first rate. Take away the Yelp reviews with service complaints - which seem unjustified - and you are looking at average ratings between four and five stars. 4. What makes the pizza good? One factor is the copious arugula they put on many - but not all - of their pizzas. They use high quality arugula - better than what I get in my supermarket back home. The taste combined with the pizza knocked my socks off. 5. There is something about the pizza sauce that is special. This is no institutional pizza sauce out of a can. I suspect their tomatoes are also superior. 6. I had one of the most boring kinds of pizza imaginable - a cheeseburger pizza. You know the deal. Hamburger. Cheese. Tomato. That recipe is a snoozefest from a chain like a Dominos. Here is was FOOD FOR THE GODS. 7. There is a large crowd and it is extremely wholesome. Lots of Needham High School teens. Few people were drinking - even the ones of legal age. Few people were watching TV even though there was a helluva baseball playoff game on the screens. A few tables were playing trivia with the trivia master who was the entertainment for the night. Mostly everyone was talking with friends and having a good time. We were no exception, inasmuch as we had two children in our party. Our lunch order included a Kid's meal cheese pizza with a side of broccoli and a chocolate milk ($12), a kid's meal mac and cheese with a side of broccoli and a regular milk ($12), a medium BBQ chicken pizza ($20), a medium sausage, onion and pepper pizza ($20), and a full sized antipasti salad ($15). The salad was excellent with mixed greens, red onion, roasted pepper, artichoke hearts, salami, turkey breast (and a lot of it), pepperoni, and a roasted shallot vinaigrette. Zero complaints here. I had a few slices of the BBQ chicken pizza and I loved it. It included a house-made BBQ sauce, roasted chicken, charred red peppers, a mozzarella blend, shaved red onions, and fresh-cut scallions. The BBQ sauce was strong and pretty zippy, but that was perfect for my taste. Our lunch for 5 ran $98.75 after tax and tip. The crust was very soggy, and the toppings almost non-existent, even though the prices have gone up. I hope this is an exception, and does not reflect a change in their product. Nice pizzeria with great beer selection, pizza options, and good wings that has outside seating. The outdoor patio in the back isn't much, but it works well. There's ample space heaters for the fall/winter. It's fairly well shielded for windy days, too. Service is very good. The manager/owner was very helpful and one of our waiters the other weekend. We came with kids and they were accommodating and easy-going. Masks on everyone all the time, good spacing on the inside for people picking up, and clear signs everywhere. The pizza options were great. We got the white bean pizza, smoked bacon squash and zucchini, and pepperoni. The white bean pizza was smashed/liquified as a base/topping and surprisingly good. The smoked bacon had real smokey flavor, unlike some "smoked" foods advertised at many restaurants, and the squash and zucchini had a nice firmness without being sloppy nor undercooked. The pepperoni pizza had decent sized slices of pep and didn't disappoint. We got the buffalo wings and were good. They were listed as being crispy but came out medium, if that. We ordered a larger salad given some of the other Yelp reviews say the small was too small and large was tiny. One person in our party got the large greek pizza for her main course and felt it was plenty, contrary to other reviews. The spinach artichoke dip was full of lots of big chunks of delicious artichoke though was a somewhat small dish. Drinks listed many good wines by glass and bottle, and beer by cans and draft. We liked the option for 3 different draft sizes so a lot of us sampled a few things. Prices here were very reasonable though the pizza prices definitely incentivize you to get the large pizzas. Got there on Friday night around 6:40 with the place just over half full. We were directed to a 2 seat table nearest to the door and I asked if we could sit at a two seat table on the opposite wall. I was told that table was reserved. I found that hard to believe, and over an hour later the place was 25% full at best and still that table was empty. Our waiter, like the others I observed weren't there to add to anyones experience. Now the worst part, once we got our order, the waiter came over once to ask how things were and that was the last time he came to our table. After we ate we sat for ten minutes with now 4 tables of diners in the whole place waiting for our check, I flagged over another waiter to get our waiter. Instead he brought over the check and I put the credit card on the table. Now our waiter is walking around by the bar and never bothers to see how his lone table of his customers is doing. I put the card away, paid cash and reluctantly gave 10% more of a tip than I should have. The only reason for three stars is the pizza and salad were good. Won't be back. read more

I like their pizza but giving 3 stars due to its poor service by either the owner or manager. my interaction with him was taking my order (30 seconds) and getting my check (waited for more than 5 mins to get his eye contact while he was standing around chit chatting with others). He did not give me a glass of water or came back to check on my table. Why are we expecting to pay 18%-22% for tips for a one minute interaction? Exactly what kind of service did I receive? We've gone to Hearth numerous times - sometimes just as our family, sometimes with friends or grandparents, a few times for birthday parties. The service is always good - the servers are very nice & accommodating; the food is yummy and consistent - it's always the same, which we like, especially when you've got little ones. The kids' menu isn't the most amazing deal - the pizza is basically the same price as a small pizza, but it does come with ice cream and a drink. Again - I wish ALL kid menus would give a veggie with every dish, but that's for every restaurant. I really appreciate the menu variety. From make-your-own salads, to a huge selection of pizzas, subs, calzones, pastas, etc. - you can really find something for everyone. In fact, we've never even tried anything other than the pizzas & wings, because we like them so much! But I've seen some of the other dishes and they do look yummy. The live music on Thursdays & Saturdays is nice, and we appreciate that they encourage kids to get involved. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the salads are SO.SMALL. We often order a pizza and salad and the small salad is teeny. Even the large salad is pretty small. Up the salad sizes and we've got 5 stars. read more

We've been to Hearth twice. The first time was great! We waited five minutes, sat down, and enjoyed a delicious pizza. Tonight we went in, and despite there being two open tables, we were told that it was going to be a 15 minute wait. So we waited for 15 minutes, while two more tables opened (!) and then were told that we would need to wait *another* 15 minutes. I paid $90 for: - buffalo wings (never showed up), - a 3 topping medium pizza that they charged $25 for, and arrived dry, with no cheese, and virtually no toppings (inedible), and - a large 4 topping pizza. We could have gotten a way better pizza at Blaze or Mod for $12!! It took 75 minutes to be delivered. And when I called to notify them about the problems with my order, they put me on hold 3 times and never returned. When i finally got through, the person on the phone was incredibly rude. They said they would replace my missing wings and empty medium pizza but couldn't do it for another 35 minutes. Who wants to wait 2 hours for terrible food and service?! Also, we're new to the area. We've been going to Hearth for more than 10 years. Pros: kid friendly, decent food, lots of selection (pizzas, sandwiches, salads, pasta, beer, wine, dessert). Cons: inconsistent service - sometimes great and sometimes lacking. *New* owner (he's been there for several years now) can be rude, condescending (e.g. my son and I asked to be seated outside when the weather started turning cooler. The restaurant advertises via email that they have plenty of outdoor heaters. There was one other table occupied and we asked to sit next to a heater. The heater was not on so we asked for it to be turned on. The owner came out to try to get it to turn on but he apparently gave up on it/it never turned on and he just decided to walk away without offering to sit us near a different heater). They also recently accepted a Door Dash order from me, including taking my $$$$$, then 2 hours later the restaurant closed, I never received my food. read more

We really used to like hearth pizzeria and the food here is top quality. However I went yesterday with kids and had a really bad dine in experience. I think the place has shifted focus entirely to takeout only. There was one uninterested server for the whole place (about 40 ppl) on a Saturday evening. Took forever to place the order, no one ever checked back how things are or to offer water refills. I placed an additional order which never got placed in the system until I checked (+20mins). Then it got placed incorrectly and had to be redone (+25 mins). About 45 mins for a kids pasta with tomato sauce. This experience last night gave me the feeling I was interrupting their high margin takeout business and was not welcome or needed for this restaurant to thrive. By the way - I get restaurants have busy nights and service can be delayed or mistakes happen. I don't have a problem with that. This was not it - it was abject indifference and lack of focus on the dine in experience entirely. Also this was not one bad server - it was the entire place not designed to cater to dine in guests. I was between two and three stars, but felt I had to go with two. I hadn't been here in years and couldn't remember why--then, after eating their gluten free pizza, I remembered why. The crust isn't your standard Udi's crust, which is nice. However, it's kind of dry with a weird texture: 'artisan' style, but not particularly tasty. For some people who don't have gluten free pizza often, it might be fine. Also, I remembered quickly how this pizza bothers my stomach. Not sure if the tomatoes in the sauce are super acidy or what, but I am not right for two days after eating it. I work in Needham and had never tried this restaurant. I had to work late and wanted to bring pizza home. I called early because I knew work was going to get crazy. I asked for them to make it to be picked up at 5:30. When the girl confirmed all the info with me she said "and to be picked up at 5:00." I corrected her, she apologized and then I hung up and went about the rest of my work day. I went in at 5:15 expecting fully that I would have to wait. Lo and behold my order was ready? I paid (a lot) with tip and left. I thought the boxes felt cold. I asked the girl if they were made a while ago and she said "No...they just came out of the oven?" Okay? Off I go. I get home, open the box, and they were cold!!! They were so chewy it hurt my jaw to try and eat them. The Fig and Prosciutto with Blue Cheese had NO Blue cheese. The Eggplant was gagging me because it was not properly prepared and the skin was inedible. I was SO disappointed because everyone in town RAVES about this place. It was $48 for four 9" pizzas so it should have been AMAZING! I bet you'll notice that I still gave it 4 stars. You know why? Because they owned it!! I called and the manager took the call. He was SO accommodating and apologetic that I will DEFINITELY will go back. I always give restaurants at least 3 tries. This was not going to get a second, but the customer service was exceptional! My family and I were there tonight..unfortunately it was Trivia night and we were blasted with one song after the next while the guy asks trivia questions..you can't even hear yourself think! They have to play an entire song very loudly after each question. There were only 6 people including us there,,place was empty! We could not wait to leave it was so loud! Also my Son asked for more water and the Waiter was too busy with his 2 person table I guess making their drinks. I also do not like the way you have to pay there. The tip is already included asking you if you want to leave 10%, 15% or 20%,, those are the options you have,,you cannot just leave whatever amount you feel like and after leaving just a 10% tip I regretted it as my Son just wanted more water. The Waiter clearly could have filled up his glass real quick but we were left waiting so we finished up and left. The service is really bad!
