Great pizza!! And the habanero wings were properly spicy. Recommended if you're in the mood for some pie.

Well, I will start and say this was an excellent pizza with firm crust, nice chew, char on edges, pepperoni a sweet flavor , not salty or greasy or harsh... The lemon wings were very good, needed more crispness , but the cooked onions with wings added a bite with the chicken . I really liked this place and its pizza and now our Newton pizza spot. Stands better than many pizzas from the North End . Excellent and quick service, small area for seating and gets busy fast. I ordered the Mikey pepperoni pizza and good size pizza, price not too bad . Pepperoni was the key to me as not salty and a fresh sweet flavor... so good quality ingredients. My extra slices heated up the next day and were as good or better the next day. No soggy slices here . Nice cold draft beers, The other specialty pizzas all a must try... meatballs appetizer next time... all good here

Running around all day, we decided we wanted pizza and had a few different choices. We decided to stop in at Max and Leo's and I'm glad we did. The place has meter parking out front, there's definitely a lot of traffic being that it's right off the highway 90 mass pike etc. The space was a lot smaller than i was expecting but it was cozy and we took a couple seats at the wall counter. Our server was cool and she took our orders promptly. We decided on two individual lunch time specialty pies from their pizza menu. I chose the L'oscar, and l'umina. I gravitate toward sausage toppings and this had sausage, white olive oil base, caramelized onions, mascarpone and mozzarella. (I opted no shrooms as it's not my thing). The lady's pie had the same base, pears, caramelized onions, basil, ricotta, and fresh prosciutto with wild flower honey drizzle. Both pizzas were cooked to perfection, no excessive char. The pizza dough was thin and had a nice crisp to it whilst still having a nice chew. We traded half of each pizza so we could get a chance to try both. The sausage pizza was awesome, added red pepper flakes parm oregano etc that is provided on the counters for self serve garnish. The umina def was sweeter but well balanced. We finished both pies including all crusts. The pizza wasn't soggy nor too oily even with our choice of pizza base. Every bite was consistent. Happy with our pizzas. Will be back again!

L' Umina 10" Lunch specialty pizza

Today, we ran some errands nearby and figured why not stop by for some pizza. It was our first time trying Max and Leo's and we were not disappointed! They have DELICIOUS pizzas. Max and Leo's run a lunch special Tuesdays-Sundays from 12-3:30pm. We decided to each get a specialty 10" pizza: L'Oscar & L'Umina. Both pizzas were full of flavor and the perfect size for lunch. The L'Oscar: Italian sausages, carmelized onions, mascarpone + mozzarella-- we decided to omit the mushrooms. So tasty, seasoned well, & loved the carmelized onions, which gave it some sweetness. The L'Umina: Prosciutto pizza with ricotta cheese, carmelized onions, basil, sliced pears, drizzled with honey! For me, I absolutely LOVE prosciutto fig pizza whenever I can get it, but I enjoyed this prosciutto pear pizza a lot. It is definitely a sweeter tasting pizza but the ricotta cheese balances it out. Also, I really liked how thin the pizzas were, still having a nice chew & not like eating cardboard. Would most definitely come back. 10/10

Best pizza! Tiny little restaurant with not many places to sit but the pizza is delicious.

Baby Spinach Salad

We New Yorkers are particular about our pizza, and it takes a lot to impress us. Max and Leo's did just that. Conveniently located across the street from the Four Points Sheraton in Newton, this restaurant is a gem. It's small inside... only a couple of tables and bar seating. However, if it's too crowded, don't hesitate to take out. The server was very warm, friendly, attentive and observant. We couldn't decide on which pizza to get, so she suggested we go half and half. We started with two beers, split the delicious baby spinach salad and shared a combination pizza...the Dante and the L'Enza. Excellent!! Thin crust, crisp on the outside, chewy on the inside; fresh ingredients perfectly balanced; and a very flavorful sauce. Convenient location, delicious food, excellent service...I highly recommend

This was such great pizza, I'm excited to try out all their other pies and see if the takeout holds up just as well as eating it fresh out of the oven. The crust/dough reminds me a little of Juliana's or Lombardi's, same crispy/chewy perfection. The wood-fired coal oven adds a beautiful well-done roasted undertone. We got the margherita. Whenever I try out a new pizza place, I always go with one of their simplest pies on the theory that if you can master the combination of cheese, tomato sauce, and basil, chances are everything else that you churn out has to be good too. It was so, so good. The pie didn't even need the meatballs as a topping (my mom's choice, she's a fervent believer that if something doesn't have meat on it, it's not a real meal). We also tried the Caesar salad but let's be real, the undisputed star of the show is the pizza. Our waitress was exceptional and so considerate: dividing our salad into two plates so we could share it more easily, joking that (after we knocked over a glass of water onto the floor) they didn't need to clean the floors given how many times people had spilled water, and saying "Thank you, [name]" after handing us our check to sign. Just a ton of small, meaningful gestures that we so appreciated after a long, exhausting day. The inside is quite tiny, only a few tabletops and seats at the bar. Not ideal for a larger group. Because everyone is so crammed in together, any sort of loud talking is amplified 100x. When we went, there was a group basically shrieking in each other's faces. It didn't make for the most pleasant experience, having to shout just to be heard over their racket and hearing every single word of their conversation, but the pizza was worth the slightly busted eardrums afterwards. Parking: a public parking lot two streets over.

Buffalo chicken pizza

This place isn't a huge sit in place it's more of a pickup place but the pizza is exceptional. The service is also great. We ordered the buffalo chicken pizza and chicken pesto and they were both delicious. Will definitely come back again.

Belgian White Draft

I went to this spot because it was recommended by someone at the reception desk of my hotel which was right across the street. Kinda felt like a cool little dive bar when I walked in. The hostess/server/bartender Brianna 'Bri' welcomed me in with a great smile. It is a small with limited seating, but I didn't mind. I ordered a beer (Belgian White) and built a sausage, pepperoni, mushroom, artichoke and jalapeño pizza (see pic). It was super delicious. I'm here for a few more days, so I will probably try one of the house special pizzas before I leave town.

L'Umina

I have been here way too many times in the 6 months I moved within walking distance of Max & Leo's. The pizza is exceptional, and the Jero's Pineapple is my favorite. It is a smaller place, but it seems to work. I have never waited too long when I've dined in. The staff is wonderful. They have gotten to know my name and even gave me an extra pizza for free once when someone didn't pick up. Even if I think of trying the many other pizza places around, I usually end up going to Max & Leo's anyway because it is so consistently good. I highly recommend visiting!

Everything went well. The service was exceptional. The staff showed up at our table before we could look up from the menu.

The food is lackluster for the price, an $18 bowl of clam chowder should knock my socks off, but it didn't. The fish and chips were severely over-breaded, they don't have malt vinegar in the bottle, a thimble full is supposed to suffice. They attempt to give gargantuan orders of fries to appease the mediocre preparation of the main entree. Get an UBER or go across the street to Buffs, but by all means do not waste your time and money at this establishment. Service at the bar was adequate, but the food overwhelmed the experience.

Come here for a social event? Perhaps? Expecting reasonable service is unlikely to be realized. The…read moreservice was poor and the minimal food I had access to was fair at best. I attended an event being held at this restaurant and was surprised and disappointed in the restaurant. The networking event itself is not being reviewed here. So where to start... accessing the restaurant was a bit of a nightmare. The garage (parking is $4-24) was the only place to park and the elevators were out of order and the garage was dimly lit. It was frankly not safe. The driveways were partially blocked for construction which I had to navigate around as a pedestrian. This is not realistically accessible for those who have mobility limitations (the temporary attempts at ramps are not usable with a wheelchair). I was given beverage menus after arrival. They were extremely hard to read as the lighting was turned down. I did manage to read it when I put the menu directly under a pendant. The beer and wine selections looked interesting! I was looking for something non-alcoholic and there was no water readily available nor offered. There were a few (maybe 4) mocktails on the menu-they looked interesting so I got one that resembled a mule (ginger beer based). I ordered one so I wouldn't be empty handed as I talked with people, especially at a networking event. The server gave it to me and made a point of saying "here is your mocktail" (which itself is not unreasonable; referring it by its name or "beverage" is much more appropriate in those circumstances as the drink type and alcohol content or lack thereof is not anyone else's business). The food menu never appeared. The appetizers that were left out for the group were picked over and unappetizing. Cold fried calamari that has been sitting out? No thanks. A cheese and cracker board with no crackers and no serving implements? No thanks. There were two flatbreads there-I had a small square of each and these were ok. About 15 minutes before the event was scheduled to end the server asked me if I wanted another mocktail. I responded with an affirmative. I assumed he had canceled the order as the event ended. As I was getting ready to leave when the event ended (I had my jacket on at that point and he had validated my parking!), he brings over the mocktail and says "here is your mocktail" and sets it on the high top table where it just sat as I left for home. I have no idea if he charged the hosts for the beverage. I left hungry. I left a bit thirsty. I left surprisingly frustrated at the restaurant. When I arrived home, I made myself dinner. Fortunately, I enjoyed meeting new people as the event itself was interesting.

Bonus points for an extravagantly laminated menu that has pictures of every single dish rendered in uber-colorful detail. We got the: papaya salad with shrimp; chicken satay; crab fried rice; pad thai; and mango sticky rice. More than enough food to feed two people, including a little bit for leftovers the next day. The crab fried rice - please, please get this. I'm usually not a fried rice person, as my parents taught me long ago that rice is just filler and must be avoided at all costs at the buffet line, but their crab fried rice is stellar. Loaded with generous chunks of real crab and so flavorful, with the smokiness of the wok permeating through. I also usually skip the pad thai at any Thai restaurant but I loved this rendition, beautiful balance of sweet and salty, and with all the necessary accoutrements, like chopped peanuts and a squeeze of lime. I would say the chicken satay is maybe a skip but it comes with an incredible peanut sauce that I love to slather on top of everything. Mango sticky rice: eh, it's not the season for mango. The one that came with ours was definitely a bit anemic and limp. The warm sticky rice covered in condensed milk with the faintest tinge of pandan green was good enough to eat on its own. They're really busy so not the best place to sit and talk with your friends all evening. Also not a lot of street parking on a busy street. I suggest walking or taking the bus over. Need to order the fried fish next time. You know a Thai place is excellent when I'm lured away from my beloved green curry to try the other options.
