My husband and I really enjoyed our meal here. We were visiting from out of town. The restaurant has a warm local vibe. It's was a bit noisy but it was a lively Friday night. The staff were all very welcoming and our waiter was really engaging. I ordered the pot roast which was AMAZING. Such a comfort food on a cold night. My husband wanted the schnitzel but was apprehensive. I told him to take a shot. Who puts schnitzel on their menu unless they know what they're doing? He thoroughly enjoyed it. Pizza is absolutely amazing. Literally one of the best I've had whether here in the states, Italy or from my kitchen. In fact, I've been there so many times that the Chef was amazing enough to share with me his gastrointestinal phenomenon of sausage making skills. Came close but mine still doesn't compare to his. All tbe ingredients are locally sourced and made in house. Everyone is friendly and what one would want when dining out. Stopped by randomly after zip-lining in Sonoma on a Sunday afternoon. We were able to get a seat without reservation. First off, come if you have an abundance of time because service can be really slow even for 2 people. We spent 75 minutes in here! Aside from slow service, (or is it because I'm from SF and move at a much faster pace?) everyone is friendly here. The two of us order 1 pizza (half pepperoini and spicy sausage) which we felt was fitting for a lunch. I also LOVE wood burning ovens. You can watch the people toss the dough. what you order is what you get and i mean that in the best way possible ! it's like asking for a car and you get a lamborghini. they have mexican coke here i don't even like soda but it was worth a try. got the scallops that were so irresistible my boyfriend made sure the plate was left barren. also ordered the mushroom pizza perfect for 2 and this is a real mushroom pizza. not talking about a few pieces scattered here and there real chunks of mushroom and even mushroom paste so if you're not really a fan of the shrooms and you're only agreeing to it cause your friend claims to love mushrooms don't do it. it was certainly delicious but would be overwhelming for non mushroom lovers. got some hot pepper flakes for my pizza usually this stuff is pretty weak but it was spicier than what i'm used to meaning it was perfect ! this is what hot pepper flakes should be like ! staff is so friendly and attentive ambience is sweet and cozy love that you can see the cute kitchen we are going to come back and try the other dishes. maybe tonight ! ps you gotta go down windy dark roads for miles and miles but it is worth it ;)o read more

We threw a dart online and hit this restaurant. It was a 45 min drive for us and well worth it. The quaint little building is located on the main street in the sweet little town of Occidental. The hostess was so sweet and welcoming. We had fried Brussel Sprouts which were literally best I have ever had. The pizza was made from fresh ingredients and had a unique twist that we both appreciated. Definitely 5 stars. Love the atmosphere and the food. We booked a reservation. Recommended. read more

Wow, this is the best value restaurant I've been to. Dishes easily serve two, if not four. Better yet, the food is excellently prepared. I'm not sure I've ever ordered roast chicken at a restaurant before, because that is usually a dish that is boring at best. Here though, the chicken was of top quality, expertly cooked and very flavorful. Plus, it was two full meals. The rib-eye must have been about a pound and half, and also well cooked. I suppose we should have known something was up when the appetizer of Brussels sprouts was a massive mound of crispy roasted sprouts with bacon. This dish was addictive. Even though it was enough for four, it was so delectable the two of us nearly polished it off. The wine list has about a dozen local wines available by both the class and bottle at a decent price. Not sure about this business model, but as a selfish consumer, I sure do hope they stay open and continue down this path! read more

Came here on my birthday/anniversary night for dinner. My husband ordered the grilled pork chop and I got the pot roast. The meat in the pot roast was good, but it was lackluster. Just potato's and the pot roast soup. A little too much liquid for my taste and I was missing carrots. My husbands pork chop was SOOO dry. It was hard to cut and even though they drench it in their sauce, it doesn't make up for the rubber texture. By far the worst we've had at a restaurant that charges $32 for it... No complimentary bread or anything. I was really hoping for a special meal for a special night, but was disappointed. The people who work here are nice, which is why I'm giving this place 2 stars, but that's about it. read more

Excellent meal and service on a Saturday night for Sonoma restaurant week! Made reservations on Yelp and were seated as soon as we arrived. The space is warm and inviting and undoubtedly some warmth from the wood fired ovens. We started with Brussels sprouts with bacon, the mushroom soup (thinner, broth based), and the lamb meatballs. Everyone enjoyed and we took sprouts home with the large portions. The meatballs could have been a meal if you added a salad. They were lamb-based, very flavorful with some hints of Mediterranean spices. Entrees of the braised pork shoulder with polenta and the chicken with smashed potatoes were huge and we ended up taking a lot home to save room for dessert. The pork was very tender and perfectly done. Desserts of peanut butter pie, Granny Smith apple crisp with three twins vanilla ice cream, and the Hazel hot fudge sundae were all good. PB pie was pretty rich, our friend loved the crisp, and the HFS was good but could have used more caramel and hot fudge. Service was pretty well paced if not a quick tad on the food delivery. Just a feel good, stick to your ribs dinner. $15 corkage for wine. read more

We came in on a Saturday night without a reservation and were able to get in on a small table for two. This is a really cute little restaurant in downtown Occidental right on the main drag. We ordered grilled octopus starter, grilled pita starter with tzaziki olives nuts, and the red quinoa entrée. SO MUCH FOOD. SO GOOD. We also ordered a glass of pinot and sepillion to pair with the meals. The service was great and the food was delicious. I would highly recommend this place to anyone passing through. read more

What a treat! We had such a lovely time and a wonderful meal last night. We had eaten our way to Occidental so we weren't terribly hungry, but the menu tempted us throughout the meal. We started off with some great wine for me and cider for my husband and the little gems salad. It was absolutely delicious. It's vegan but in a caesar style so they used fried capers to get a saltiness to replace the anchovies, and some nutritional yeast to give it some cheesy, nuttiness. It was truly special. After the salad we were ready for a pot roast. My husband and I both had memories of chewy, tough pot roasts from our childhood before ordering but we took the leap and so glad we did. It was more of a brisket style cut and the meat fell apart perfectly. The onion sauce and the mashed potatoes were delicious as well. The salad and the pot roast made for a perfect pairing. This place is amazing! At first we called to order takeout, and they said they weren't doing takeout, so we decided to go in and sit down. The only seating they had left was at the "chef counter". Little did I know our experience at the chef counter would be so cool. We got to watch chef and owner, Jim, make incredible dishes at lightning speed right in front of our eyes. This is a small cozy restaurant and chef Jim cooked for every table. The portions were big and the food was AMAZING. We also met Michelle, Jim's wife and co-owner. Michelle is also the pastry chef (trust me - order dessert!!). We had a reservation somewhere else tonight but are already debating running it back at Hazel! I liked the pizza and they stayed open late to accommodate us. My friend ordered the tomato salad, and I thought it was very good, but she forgot she didn't really like tomatoes, so that wasn't going to work for her. Came in for a date with the hubs a few weeks back. The restaurant is small, and when it's hot out, it's HOT inside. Ambient temperature, people seated close together, and a pizza oven all contribute to a sweltering vibe, so snag a seat near a window if you can. Plus, it's always nice to sit by a window, right? I had the joy of having dinner here during restaurant week. It was an amazingly delicious meal and the drive there was beautiful. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for nice drive, a yummy meal and then maybe some beach time (as the restaurant is only about 20mins from the coast). It was a night and day experience from the first meal we had during restaurant week at Dry Creek Kitchen which we will never return to. Just finished an amazing meal at Hazel's for our anniversary. We walked in without a reservation and weren't prepared for that question when asked if we had one. Admittedly I thought: this is a little tiny town, do I really need one? After tasting the food I can say yes, yes you do..let me clearly say just call ahead to be sure you get a table. It's totally worth the drive! The ribeye was melt in your mouth good, as was the pot roast. We had a bottle of 2013 Boheme Zinfandel, and enjoyed It thoroughly. They let us try 3 wines before we bought the bottle. The fresh bread made in-house (by our server who is also a co owner), oh my, so much goodness. I've nurtured a sourdough starter from scratch...it's work, it's finicky; and her bread is spot on. Dense chewy inside yet tender exterior. For dessert a peach cobbler and chocolate pot de creme; also great texture and taste...the whole vibe was great...Small town cute decor, attentive service, outstanding food. They make you feel welcome, and as an interracial couple visiting the "sticks" so to speak, I wasn't prepared for that honestly....because even though it's 2019, the struggle is still real after 30 years together. We were warmly welcomed here though...a huge win in itself. What a perfect ending to our celebration day. Ps...The portions were large and worth the money, and even if not large, still worth the money. We have half our plates and desserts for breakfast tomorrow morning :) You won't be disappointed coming here. We will definitely day trip back, and as often as possible. What a surprise to find a restaurant like Hazel in a town of less than 800. We drove through one day on our way back to our home in Bodega Bay and saw it. We were lucky enough to get a reservation and even more fortunate to be able to sit at the Chef's counter for dinner. It was a prime spot. The pizza oven in front of us and Jim the owner/chef cooking next to it. We started watching the food come up, and several things stood out. It was obvious the Brussels sprouts and the Riblets were popular items off the starter menu. We started decided to share everything so we could try more. We started with the Little Gem salad with fried capers, in a vegan Caesar dressing. Like my husband said, the lettuce taste like it was just picked in the garden. Not the cold storage stuff we are used to being served. You could taste the freshness. Next we ordered a pizza. The Pt. Reyes Blue Cheese with Marcona almonds, and Caramelized onions. Perfect thin crust, topping not too heavy. Sublime. Up next, glazed meatloaf. As soon as we sat down I knew my husband would want this dish. It did not disappoint! Huge portion to split with a BBQ glaze and mashed potatoes. The best! We ended up taking home a rice Krispy treat and oatmeal raisin cookie for breakfast.
