What a lovely spot! Came here two days in a row on a drive between Sebastopol and Jenner. I've actually been driving past this spot for a couple years and never stepped in. So glad I finally did! Beautiful interior with a large wooden bar and lots of house plants. I got a vanilla bean latte and my wife got a strawberry matcha. We also got a chocolate croissant and a ham galette. All were delicious and were extremely high quality, which is an odd way to describe food, I know. However, I watched the barista make the drinks and he was extremely measured and clearly experienced. We could also see the kitchen where food was being made. My point is they are very committed to their craft here! The ambience is so cozy! Nice warm lighting, lots of seating, and even a kids play area. And the large windows with the fog rolling through the redwoods really ties it all together. Although this General Store adds a touch of gentrification to the laid back Bohemian vibe of Occidental, it seems to do it in such a magnificent way. Open, welcoming, space to work and commune, delicious and varied menu, very local amazing sourdough toast and goods to cart off to your other adventures. The Avocado Smash (with egg on the amazing sourdough) - so unique and tasty with black garlic aioli and chili pepper water?! Perfection. Hojicha, black sesame and a few other select lattes that are unique around here. A bit of an Asian flair on the menu with Korean fried chicken tacos, chicken katsu on the kids menu along with bowls and salads. My wife and I came up here to see the sonoma zip line adventure and stumbled on to this beautiful gem. Walking into this General store setting takes me back to Lahaina town. Such a great homey feeling. Service is out of this world amazing, we had or teas delivered while shooping the book store. shortly after paying for our books our food was on the table. Amazing! While in our third trimester, we were trying to pack in as many food events as possible while we had the freedom of time. One of those days we decided to venture out to the Altamont general store even though our real destination was a pick your own apples farm. When we arrived at the store, I was really excited to see the variety of specialty items they sold while I was waiting to place my order for food. I noted multiple specialty items that I purchase that they have there, all in one place! The menu was pretty big and full of really interesting combos of food. I was delighted to see so many things with a Hawaiian twist including mochi donuts and lots of things with black sesame, which is one of my favorite flavors. I ordered the black sesame latte and he ordered The cafe Daniel, while we looked over more food. Because I was pregnant and feisty about food, I decided to start with the mochi donuts and then go for a breakfast plate while he ordered the breakfast sandwich. I took the mochi donut to my table and it was so delicious, I literally cried. Pregnancy is magical. Our entrees were also very good and on subsequent trips we had breakfast one time as well as lunch the next time and they were both delicious. My favorite thing though was still the mochi donut, followed closely by their breakfast focaccia. The prices are a little on the high side but what you get for that price is a lot of dedication to high quality, and the presentation is really nice as well. Everything is made with attention and love, and you can really feel that in the ambiance too. Every time I go here I find something that I haven't tried that is my new favorite, whether it be a dish or something that they sell in the store. I always leave full and happy. The only downsides here are the hours, which can be challenging if you want something other than breakfast, and the bathroom situation can be also a challenge because of the limited access. I do wish they were a little bit closer to the central Sonoma county area, but it does make it a great excuse to get out this way. The Altamont General Store is such a cute find in downtown Occidental right along the Bohemian Highway. They offer a cafe specialties as we as breakfast, salads, sandwiches, bowls, tacos and entrees. I tried their chai milkshake and focaccia pizza and both were AMAZING! The focaccia pizza with pesto and garlic was so tasty. They have a large indoor area for seating as well as an outdoor seating area in front of the restaurant that overlooks the beautiful redwood trees of Occidental. This was a great find and glad I was able to stop in! The staff was also very friendly during the visit. read more

There's so much to love about the Altamont General Store, I drive 65 miles from SF to enjoy. The owners have expanded their operation and the work that they're doing in the community is phenomenal. They have connections to the Hawaiian islands and I love their island inspired menu. There is now a huge outdoor space with live music and entertainment on the weekends. Tons of indoor and outdoor seating. The curated shopping experience inside is incredible with fancy foods and beautiful local made jewelry and gifts. My only gripe is that the prices have increased significantly from the first time I started going. I spent $70 (without tips) on a matcha latte ($7 due to added collagen and manuka honey), Korean fried chicken plate ($21) for lunch, a few items to go in their ready made food case (small chia pudding, small egg salad, lemon turmeric marinade, two cookies). There's a sign in the bathroom that talks about the cost of doing business in Occidental as it relates to them having significant sewer costs. (Weird flex). Overall, I love the Altamont General Store and will continue to spend ALL my money here to support a family that is doing incredible things in the community. read more

Spending a weekend around Bodega Bay, Jamie W and I decided to make a pitstop in the quiet hamlet of Occidental. Why? After all, we don't fit either prototype for the typical visitors, whether it be stoned hippies or strenuously uptight cyclists. This appeared to be the congregation spot in town since there was a line. It's owned by a same-sex couple who spent four years renovating the building. They did a fine job because there's a family den vibe that attracts not only tourists but local laptoppers. Their menu was pretty diverse from chicken katsu sandos to avocado toast to their locally famous boho bowls which was anchored by rice and stewed lentil beans. First time at this spot and it's the cutest and most fun general store/ restaurant I have been to. It's has items for sales, a space for kids to play, and cute couches and seating areas. I came early for chai latte and ginger muffin ~ delicious! Service was great as well and the staff are super friendly. On a recent road trip, we stumbled across this little gem and had a beautiful Caesar salad. I'm a bit of a Caesar salad snob: usually the Romain is overdressed & chopped too finely. This salad was non of these things. Just outstanding. Such good bacon chunks (not 'bits') and shaved (not grated) Parmesan. Glad that my brother had heard of this place. Perhaps he'd been there once before, but said that the interior looked different from what he remembered. Dear Hubby, my brother and sister-in-law, and I were out for a rambling drive on a Sunday afternoon last month. We hadn't had lunch and needed a break from apple picking. My brother suggested stopping in Occidental, and recalled this as being a place to get good sandwiches. I had in mind a good deli, but The Altamont General Store is more creative than that. Housed in a fabulous historic building, but remodeled to a modern aesthetic inside, they feature a unique menu. They offer various food choices, plus a roster of barista coffeehouse beverages. DH and I decided to share Mary's Free-range chicken Katsu Sando, and a side of fries. The chicken came in panko-crusted flavorful glory, with tonkatsu sauce, yuzu aioli, slaw, pickled onions, on a fresh banh mi roll. House-made potato chips also came with the sandwich. We didn't know that, and with the side of fries (which was very large, and plenty to share among the four of us), we were well-potatoed! The fries were some of the best I'd had in a long time. After we ordered and paid, we took a number and found a table in their expansive dining room. There was also seating out front of the building, but we opted for indoors. Gave us an opportunity to "see what they've done with the place". They have minimal display racks with items for sale, nodding to the general store roots. There's also a zone set aside for kiddos to play. Service was cheerful and reasonably prompt, once the sandwiches were ready. It's not a mass-produced operation, so it took a little while for the food to be prepared. We had time to relax and visit in the bright and character-filled surroundings. Lovely spot for brunch or lunch. They have tons of gluten free options and unique local baked pastries with many of them being either gluten free or vegan. The sourdough bread and pizza crust they use is also locally baked and it was delicious on my avocado toast. I stopped in for breakfast and had an avocado smash and a cappuccino. Loved that they use Strauss organic milk for their drinks and also have great non-dairy options. Each and every dish on the menu sounded fabulous and was made with good quality ingredients. I'm a fan... at least I was, I'm a weekly regular. But unfortunately my last few visits have been met with lazy service at the register. I got an eye roll today that made it really difficult to leave a tip. I got the tasty Apple focaccia bread and I've always been asked "for here, to go, do you want it heated?" So I figured it was a part of the routine. I asked for here and if it could be heated and cut in half. The register woman said "the kitchen is too busy right now". We had other food for here as well so I asked if the kitchen can just take care of it with our order, it was no rush. She rolled her eyes and sighed. The kitchen brought out our focaccia cut in a half and cold. Also wasn't the freshest piece so it was a bit stale. I enjoy the food but I have had to take a step back from my weekly visits due to the lack of consistency and multiple mistakes on orders. This place has the BEST COFFEE CAKE I have ever tasted!! The outside was crumbly and sugary while the inside was moist and delicious. It had the perfect blend of cinnamon and sugar. I wish they had more but we bought the last one. I still think about this coffee cake... For coffee, I got an iced vanilla bean latte, which was pretty good, and not too sweet. The inside is absolutely beautiful because of the decor and how they've sectioned off each area to feature different products or decor. Oh my this is a super find. We drove up from Marin had a great drive along the coast and then stopped at this general store restaurant. The food is super we had this amazing crab salad with a special dressing include from including kimchi yeah I know may not sound so great amazing. If you're not gluten-free don't read this, but there is amazing amazing gluten-free options including this killer chocolate caramel shortbread that is pictured here with ice cream topper. My husband, sister & I wanted to come to Occidental since we'd hadn't been here since my sister & I were children. I found this gem, and wanted to check it out. We arrived around 1:30pm on Fri 1/10. The sweet lady behind the counter named Julie told us to grab a table where ever we want. We checked out the menu, walked up to the counter & ordered. It was too late for breakfast so we decided to get a 16oz Mocha $6.45, 12oz London Fog Latte $4.75 and we all shared a Bakers Pizza $11.50, which was more like a thick slice of Focaccia. We also got a Mary's Free Range Chicken sandwich $18.00, and a Ork Melt $17 which came with their own homemade seasoned chips. Everything we got was oh so delicious and authentic. Can't wait to come back again, hopefully in time for their fabulous looking breakfast items. read more

I've been here a couple times and always amazing. But on this rainy day, feeling especially grateful for Altamont. Good spot to have a cup of coffee and get some work done (which I was doing earlier), or sip on a mimosa and do some writing. I'm always a sucker for a cafe that is a sort of "choose-your-own-adventure." As in you could just grab a drink and do work, have a delicious meal, or gather with friends. My friend Alexis lives nearby, and took me here while I was visiting her for breakfast one day. We came on a Friday morning and it was not very busy. Such a cute store! They had all kinds of goodies. We ordered: - Jammy Plate - Coffee - Avocado Toast I loved the Jammy plate! It looked like a random plate of veggies and eggs, but everything went together so well. I loved the black garlic aoili that came with the plate. We went back later and browsed the shop section, and I bought some local seeds for my vegetable garden too. Occidental is a small town but The Altamont General Store is a huge space. There's tons of indoor seating and a great patio area shaded by a large tree. Dogs are welcome out front. The whole menu looked delicious and unique. I was feeling basic and got the Avocado Smash which was far from basic! I loved the arugula salad, soft boiled egg and pickled onions. The passion fruit tea was fabulous and perfectly refreshing. All of the staff was very friendly. Super cute spot and will definitely come back next time we're in the area. read more

So glad to see this building open up after years closed. It's a big gorgeous place, and the new management is very kind and welcoming. The menu is carefully designed with options for everyone. They even sell gluten free pastries baked in-house. I ordered the beyond beef hotdog. First time trying a beyond product, and damn... I'm hooked. The toppings were amazing and complex--pickled mustard seed and green tomato relish, yuzu aioli, spicy ketchup, and crispy fried shallots--all on a delicious pillowy bun. The textures and flavors all played excellently together, and I devoured the whole thing in under 5 minutes. (Yes, I'll definitely be going back for seconds.) The matcha, too, is very wholesome and tasty, with added collagen, and you can request almond or oat milk if that's your thang. There is currently only outdoor seating but you can always take your stuff to go. They have plenty of tasty pre-made lunch options too, so this is the spot to grab picnic provisions. read more
