This was my first time in this adorable little community, and I truly loved how it's truly a hidden gem between two valleys!! This particular marketplace had an assortment of food, drinks, sandwiches, as well as a mini coffee shop! Truly, something for everyone and my sister-in-law and husband both bought a bag of the coconut curry popcorn!! I've read other posts about the prices and the sandwiches within this particular marketplace and sorry, I'm from Silicon Valley, but the prices are the same with Silicon Valley as this little particular shop! That being said, they had a number of organic, eclectic, allergy sensitive items like gluten-free or vegan items that I only see at specialty stores all within a nutshell of this little hidden gem in the middle of nowhere mind you!! I also loved the corner, left hand spot of a mini pharmacy where they had a handful of organic, home remedy items that you could buy over-the-counter!! I wish I could have tried one of their sandwiches, but we are eating dinner across the street at a nostalgic Italian restaurant, and I was very eager to see what they had!! I can't wait to come back to this adorable little town and come shopping again!! They also had an amazing wine selection, and I would love to try all the local wineries that I saw driving into this little hidden gem within Sebastopol! I can't WAIT to come back here! We were in the area and decided to get a small bite to eat. As we were walking around Occidental, the Bohemian Market sign across the street caught our eye. We ordered a small roast beef sandwich, but their homemade chili caught our attention as we stood there waiting for the sandwich! Folks, the chili was delicious! So much so that we ordered one quart to go! The staff got us what we needed promptly and with a smile. The store is spacious and organized, with a variety of goods. My husband and I were on an adventure through the Russian River Area. We discovered An alluring river, hikes, kayaking, artists ( the entire area is an art colony) redwoods, a kind community, and great food experiences! We love food! We stumbled on the Bohemian Market one afternoon as we explored Occidental. We were heading to the coast for a beach picnic. It is amazing you can go from a beautiful river and redwoods, to dramatic ocean vistas in 20 minutes! Haha, we took longer. We got captivated by the town of Occidental. It is an artist collective. Art, captivating shops featuring local artists, clothes, and a stop for sandwiches at the Bohemian Market!!! The place is a gem! Marcus, AKA, The DeliLama, is a food artist, tucked away in the back. He can cook!! We came in for a sandwich and came away with his (should be famous) chili, and chicken soup, and a sandwich that was as loaded, as it was flavorful. I saw in one review that a person lamented about the amount of peppers on the sandwich, you can ask for them on the side. They are delicious. They use three kinds! Marcus is a sandwich and food craftsman. We got roast beef and cheddar, after much debate. And went with "everything". We don't usually. But we wanted the full Marcus creation, after speaking with him. So glad we did. Marcus knows his way around the deli! Meat and deli selections prices are lower than our big markets near us, and looked good. Yes, you might wait a short time, but that's because Marcus and his team are building those sandwiches custom. Engage about the soups, brisket, salads, whatever catches your eye. The chili and brisket have a story. The chicken soup has heart. The salads are made with local ingredients and Marcus knows every ingredient in each, like a walking cookbook. I am sure the team he has back there are just as wonderful, he is the captain. Eric, in produce, was awesome too. He is very knowledgeable about the selection there. We walked away with fruit, veggies, and greens, for later. I really appreciated his gentle sharing about freshness, origin, and flavor. If you come in, hopefully Gabe will be upfront! He is inviting, warm, and fun to talk to about the area. You can't miss him. Darling, tall, and smiling, and knows the market and ins and outs of the area. Oh, I can't leave this out! We picked up a pound of Marcus' brisket. It, like the chili, is a multi day recipe. We bought it early because it runs out. We paid and he stored in their fridge for our way back, sauce in the side. When we did pick it up, he was still working, and he packed it our cooler for us! He treats food with care. DeliLama!! It is flavorful, tender, and lean. It takes a real chef to render it that good! We are already planning our next trip back. We will call ahead to see what's on the stove. And see what's on the sandwich board!!! Haha. Do yourself a favor, and do the same. I included pictures. Service ranges from absolutely inviting and friendly to the polar opposite. The sandwiches are usually pretty great and unbeatable for occidental. They like the roast beef on a soft roll with everything but onions. It's not a cheap sandwich but they do hit the spot. Sadly 1/3 of the time they don't have much in them as far and meat and cheese go. You order at the sandwich/meat counter. There is a tip jar, which is fine they should get tips. Then you go to ring out in the front and there is another tip jar one at each counter and one at the coffee bar. It's a bit much. I am all about showing gratitude towards the workers but I don't like having it in my face so much that I feel weird about it. If you don't tip the sandwich maker they clearly seems miffed, even if you are just waiting to do it when you ring out. Feels like maybe the your sandwich quality depends on their mood and them witnessing you putting money in their jars. Everything they have is expensive, they do have a manager special rack in the back corner but most of what is there is moldy or worse. I do like that they have Strauss Dairy products and they accept the bottles back for deposit. The produce is very hit and miss. Does not seem like there is much thought about it other than making as much profit as possible. But we are a captive audience out here and they gouge us locals and then cater to the tourists. Over the years the staff has been a revolving door, some are good and some clearly hate being there. Either way it's always a lot of personality. I hope they are paid well. While I def do not recommend them them for groceries I do love their sandwiches and milk selection. If you are into $7 granola bars and $12 jars of mayonnaise then this is your place. Highly recommend getting your sandwich fix at this location. There's a lot of really good beverages and snacks and fresh local groceries. But the deli and the sandwich artists that will take care of you genuinely want to make you the best sandwich they can and they deliver. It's a small place so I imagine on busy days it can take some time but we had the luck of being one of only a few patrons and got our sandwich (as big as it was) pretty quick. Cut into thirds and those were still heroic sized sandwiches themselves. The bread is light and fluffy, the meat cheese, chipotle mayo, sweet peppers, everything was 100% on this baby. If you ever find yourself in Occidental and are in need of natural and organic products, this is the place for you. Nice little store with a good selection of health foods. They offer organic coffee all day and will make special drinks like mochas as well. They have a decent selection of beer and wine and they carry some great local meat from Panizzera meat co. Definitely the best part about Bohemian Market are the sandwiches. All the specials are fantastic and they offer them in 6",12" and 18". I'd suggest the Italian, the Monster or the Meatball sandwich. They don't always have meatballs so it would be wise to call first to see if it's available before showing up to utter disappointment and heartbreak. This place isn't very cheap but it's nice to support a small business. They do have a clearance section where sometimes you can find great deals. The Staff is always friendly and helpful. We rarely get to this area but needed a vegetable for tonight's dinner, so we stopped at this market. We bought some asparagus which looked pretty good but later noticed that some of the stalks were rotten. That's our fault for not taking a closer look. The darn stuff cost us over $11. Live and learn I guess. But the reason for the poor review is the attitude of the store staff. Indifferent at best and downright rude at worst. There were three staffers in the store, and they all had scowls on their faces and were way less than civil. Geez... we went in with a friendly attitude but came away wondering in this was unusual or the norm. From reading some of the reviews, this seems to be fairly normal. We come to this area occasionally for rest and relaxation. We sure didn't get that vibe at this market. read more

I live in town. Never had a problem with the market until 5 minutes ago. Went to the deli to order three sandwiches. Was told it'd be 25 min if I wanted to order three sandwiches (there were no sandwich orders ahead of me). Said I'd only order one then and he said it'd be 10 min. And then he angrily wrote down my order. The dude was pissed to be taking an order before he got off his shift apparently. But instead of just saying that and having someone else take my order he rudely implied I shouldn't be ordering three sandwiches because it'd take 25 min. Really? So the guy who didn't take my order made my one sandwich... wrong... while the dude who rudely took my order packed up for the day as the other guy was making the sandwich!! I can handle slow service, like normal for this market, but after this, I will NEVER spend money here again. I'd rather drive to Andy's. Great option for picnic fixins on our way to pick apples. We came specifically for the deli sandwiches and were not disappointed. Three of us split an 18" Monster sandwich on a sourdough roll... and it was more than enough. It may not sound like much, but I found my 6" segment of Monster sandwich to be way more filling than a 12" from Subway. It also tasted much, much better. The Monster looks like a pretty standard hoagie, but some combination of the mustards and other ingredients they use made it taste extraordinary. Formerly - the Occidental Market - (look over the front door as you come in) , now called the Bohemian Market is a real healthy looking place with a very active coffee bar, good looking vegetables, a very nice meat counter and lots of choices for fresh bread. The baguette that I had was fresh and wonderful. I couldn't wait and started munching on it in my car. It was top flight. I can hardly wait to come back for a sandwich at lunch some time. This used to be a great local store with friendly staff. I've asked a couple of times about the sign for Taylor coffee indicating a discount if you bring in the empty can to get more--They say it is wrong, there is no discount, but won't take the sign down. I actually got charged extra for bringing it back, as they charged me for a new can. I think I may have encountered the sullen young lady mentioned in other reviews today. I got a sarcastic smile when I suggested the sign be changed. If you want to feel like a burden and find out what you are being charged at the register, this is your place! read more

Yummy sandwiches - not cheap, but the quality of every ingredient from bread to meat is excellent. I got the Italian and it had a drizzle of dressing that spiced it up just a notch and brought all the flavors together. Be forewarned, the "medium" sandwich will feed a small family for a week. The board price seems high, but seriously, you will eat the delicious thing for days. I may have lost a point in my cool quotient when I asked if they carried Diet Coke and the guy huffed "we only carry natural beverages,' but not a huge deal. Clearly I'm not a local. I've only been here the once, but the folks were super friendly and helpful. We discovered Comet Corn here- in the coconut curry flavor! Heavenly! this store had many unique local items (including some really unusual sodas), and great prices on wine. My husband bought produce here, and was very happy with that. We also loaded up on some of their specialty sweets (all very satisfactory). When I am in Occidental next I will definitely stop here! read more

UPDATE: 4 years later these guys are really getting it down and provide an invaluable resource for our community. The employees are much friendlier, mostly cute young ladies. The produce has really improved, both selection and quality. They have a wide variety of choices at the butcher counter, including great deli meats. The coffee counter is convenient, coffee drinks are the best in Occidental, chai is usually is a little watery though. The stock seems to change a lot, so don't depend on always being able to find the same item. Nice store to be in, especially if you are looking for snacks. ORIGINAL REVIEW: They seem to have a knack for hiring rude, lazy employees. I called in a sandwich the other day, when I drove down to get it, the chick that was supposed to be making it was outside smoking a cigarette, and hadn't made the sandwiches yet. And I've been there when 3 employees were just standing around and not one of them answered the phone. And some of them just give you attitude for no reason. It's like, you work at a grocery store, really? I have been overcharged on more than one occasion. They make a good deli sandwich half of the time. They have meat and not always fresh produce, but lots of snack foods and frozen foods and desserts, especially of the non-dairy variety, which I appreciate. Good when you don't want to drive all the way to Sebastopol and you need some, like, cheese or something. They do have fresh Panizerrra sausages, which you can't find anywhere else I don't think. They have a focus on organic, "natural" foods, which I think suits the community. They also have a section of home cleaning and hygiene products, pet foods. It's clean and not as sketchy as Gonnella's, so overall it's good to have in town.
