Ciao Bruto - Ciao Bruto Friday afternoon tasting with Irene Carfagna of Altura! (Giglio, Tuscany)

Ciao Bruto! A newer…read moreItalian wine and provisions shop from the lovely folks at Idlewild Wines nextdoor. The shop opened in 2022 and it's a welcome addition to the Healdsburg wine scene. I love local wines, but this Italian girl also loves exploring and trying these imported Italian wines and provisions too. Variety...the spice of life! The owners are extremely knowledgeable about all the wines they carry. Need a recommendation? Just ask! I've been in a few times so far to purchase Italian wines and treats including Antonio Mattei Biscotti di Prato (the best biscotti ever!), torrone (a nougat confection), pasta, and tomato sauce. They also carry Italian sardines, olive oils, cookbooks, wine decanters, and more. Follow them on social to learn about their Friday wine tastings (I still need to get to one), and give them a visit!

Large, excellent selection of high quality wine from every region in Italy. Piedmont, Sicily, Tuscany etc. etc. they are all covered and in EVERY price range. I have bought numerous bottles based off the recommendations of the owners, all have been exceptional. Add in a large selection of French Champagne and Italian sparkling wine and you have a truly unique assortment of Italian wine and French Champagne. If that was the extent of Ciao Bruto it would be great but the provisions part of the store is awesome! Specialty Italian ancient grain pasta in all shapes and sizes. Believe me, you can taste the difference compared to chain store pasta. Also a large assortment of tinned fish-shellfish, honey, spices, vinegars and oils, pickled veggies, various pestos and sauces, flour, chocolates and others confections, pasta making machines, Italian cookbooks and a whole lot more. All this imported from Italy! You can't quite completely "grocery shop" there but you can get specialty food, wine and provisions you simply can't get anywhere else. Ciao Bruto is the creation from the people next door at Idlewild Wines, also makers of great Italian Piedmont varieties such as Dolcetto, Barbara, Nebbiolo, Arneis etc. all grown in nearby Mendocino County. Service at Ciao Bruto is friendly and very helpful. Not sure about Italian wine, French Champagne or specialty food from Italy, no problem, just ask for help from Courtney whose expertise is French Champagne or Thomas whose knowledge is all about Italian wine and food. We are so happy to have Ciao Bruto locally here in Healdsburg!

However, almost immediately after my fiancé took the last piece, a server removed the plate. We had been served for less than five minutes, and there was still avocado and sauce left that we wanted to enjoy. The plate was cleared so abruptly that it felt as though the staff were more concerned with removing it than allowing us to finish. This was our first red flag. We then waited over 30 minutes for our two pasta dishes. My fiancé eventually asked our waiter, Hank, a simple question: "Where is our food?" Rather than acknowledging the wait or providing an update, Hank became defensive, explaining that it was their busiest night since opening. My fiancé clarified that he was only asking because it had been well over 30 minutes. Hank responded, "Yeah, this is how we do it here. It usually takes 30 minutes in restaurants like this," before walking away. We found this comment unnecessary and condescending, especially considering that my fiancé had asked a reasonable question without being disrespectful. Wanting to understand his comment, my fiancé asked Hank what he meant by saying that was how they did things there. Hank insisted he did not mean anything by it and said he would get his manager. Unfortunately, the interaction with management was even more disappointing. The manager arrived and immediately announced that she would remove the pasta from our bill. There was no greeting, acknowledgment of the situation, or apology. My fiancé calmly began explaining that he had no complaints about Hank's service overall and simply wanted clarification regarding the comment. Before he could finish, the manager interrupted him, repeatedly saying, "That's not your problem to fix." We were genuinely shocked by her response. We were not trying to fix the restaurant's operational issues or demand compensation. We simply wanted to understand the interaction and share our experience. The manager came across as dismissive and transactional, seemingly more interested in removing the pasta from our bill and moving on than actually listening to our concerns. To be clear, we would have happily paid for our meals. A complimentary dish was never the point. We value professionalism, accountability, and respectful communication far more than compensation. Following this exchange, Hank no longer served our table, and another staff member took over. While we cannot know his reasoning, the change further contributed to the uncomfortable atmosphere. Beyond the service, the food itself was underwhelming. The truffle pasta was the only dish we genuinely enjoyed. The risotto was watery, and my New York strip, which I specifically ordered medium-rare, arrived grey and far from what I expected. I almost always finish my steak, but I was so disappointed with the result that I could not enjoy it as I normally would. Overall, the food did not live up to our expectations. My fiancé has dined at hundreds of Michelin-starred restaurants and has experience with private chefs, so we understand that busy evenings happen and delays are sometimes unavoidable. We do not expect perfection, but we do expect quality food, clear communication, and respectful service. As a former restaurant owner myself, I was particularly disappointed by how this situation was handled from both a culinary and management perspective. Ultimately, the issue was not simply the wait. It was the combination of an underwhelming meal, an unnecessarily uncomfortable interaction over a straightforward question, and management that made us feel dismissed rather than heard. A busy evening is never an excuse for defensiveness or a lack of professionalism. When guests raise a concern respectfully, the appropriate response is to listen, acknowledge their experience, and address it courteously. This restaurant has significant room for improvement in food execution, service standards, staff communication, and leadership. Being located in Healdsburg does not automatically make a restaurant exceptional. The entire dining experience matters, and unfortunately, neither the food nor the service lived up to our expectations.

I would pick 4 spirits for my tasting. The choices of absinthe and amaro intrigued me, but I wasn't sure I wanted to taste them straight. I was lucky enough that there was just enough pour from the lime vodka so I chose lime vodka, gin, bourbon, and corn whiskey. The lime vodka was yummy and would be great for mixing drinks. I really liked the H.O.B.S. gin. It stands for Harbor of Broken Souls. Nice name, but with the juniper taste and ABV at 50%? This would be perfect for mixing since it's a higher ABV. I was so curious how it would taste that I ordered an H.O.B.S. Gin and tonic for my wife. Yep, it tasted great. I'm a whiskey guy and I like bourbon. However, I actually preferred their corn whiskey. Perhaps because it's 80% corn so it was extra sweet. The only complaint I had was that each pour was very little. It's great that they use Glencairn glasses for tasting, but wish they had been more generous with their pours. As a home mixologist, I had a nice chat with the bartender about their gin, their local bitters. It's the great conversation that takes the experience to another level. Buying a bottle would waive the tasting fee? Great. I got that H.O.B.S. gin that I really had my eyes (and taste buds) on! I would use 1 oz of their gin and another oz of Tanqueray to make a gin and tonic. Maybe next time I would come back and taste the absinthe.

Very creative spirits at this distillery. Bourbon is there focus with great Vodka too. Large space…read morewould be great for events
