I think my previous three stars is too harsh a rating. It's a tiny place in a tiny riverside town and I shouldn't hold it to standards of places in Santa Rosa or other busier cities. Linda is trying her best and she's doing a pretty good job. Also, the breakfast burritos are delicious. Boyfriend likes the one with chorizo and I like the one with ham. She seasons it with something that makes it a little spicy and it's so good; maybe cayenne pepper? We don't love the pizza sauce, it's too much like pasta sauce, so we get ours with pesto instead. NICEST OWNER EVER and some really tasty homemade style pizza! So good! Literally walked in 5 minutes before closing (hours were very wrong on yelp but more on that soon), they were all cleaned up and she made me a pizza on the spot and even gave me a taste of the pulled pork for the sandwiches (also very yummy!!!). We came in to order a pepperoni pizza (or peporoni, as written on their menu). The total for a pizza and a couple of soft drinks from the fridge came out to $49, and when I asked if I could leave a tip on the card, the owner went on an incomprehensible, anti-government diatribe, taxation, etc. I nodded politely and listened as she eventually transitioned to complaining about AB 1228, the recently-enacted law that increases minimum wage for fast food workers in California. Not a great first impression, but would the pizza save the day? Not even close. If you ever ate cafeteria pizza in public schools in the 90s and 2000s, this was worse. The sauce, proudly made in-house, tasted like canned tomato paste, and was covered in a mixture of shredded "mozzarella" and yellow cheese. The dough, also apparently made from scratch, was so stuck to the bottom after just 15 minutes in the box, that you couldn't even lift a slice without it breaking in half. Maybe it was an off night? Driving though town we saw the sign and decided to stop and check it out. The woman working there was running it alone so it took us sometime to get a pizza. Took a trip back up to Northern California to attend my brother's wedding and we stayed in Monte Rio. The resort we stayed at had no restaurant, so I scouted out the area to look for eats. Two doors away, I found this place. Rustic, but really friendly and nice, Fern's offers fresh custom deli sandwiches, pizza slices, mexican food, and the general variety of small town, "corner market" goods. Great place for generous sandwiches to go. Plus, they're open until 10pm which is really convenient. Thanks for your service Fern. Found this place driving by the river and thought pizza sounded great after a long hot beach day. Dropped in and without assuming, we asked if she sold whole pizzas to which she snarkly and sarcastically replied it was obvious... obviously not since there were no signs or prices, only a sign saying 4.95 a slice (outside). The only reason she stopped belittling us was because we asked her for the price. We purchased a whole pizza but felt regret the whole half hour. When we went back to pick it up, she was with a handful of customers. Two separate groups had asked the same question and her answer was quite different. No sarcasm, no smartass jokes, just smiles and nice words. When we grabbed our pizza, my partner mentioned that the sale of a whole pizza wasn't obvious and to that she responded, "maybe". Unlike every other customer, she never said "thank you" to us and immediately engaged with the next customer who seemed to be caught between the tension. We felt bad eating her pizza which was alright, so we came to a conclusion that our service could be appreciated elsewhere. I never leave reviews but this left a really sour taste in my mouth. My stomach churned a little from the anger but it wasn't worth arguing. Go one town over and find nicer people to give your service to. It ain't worth the 30 something bucks. Fern's is an institution in Monte Rio. And it just gets better. You won't find better pizza anywhere in West Sonoma. Sandwiches are made to order with fresh ingredients and plenty of meat. And you'll most likely find things you need but don't want to drive so far to the next big box supermarket. Hours are great : 6AM - 11PM and on Fridays & Saturdays they are open until midnight. I've lived here two years, this place is no good. Parking is a hassle, there's usually 2-3 homeless or dirty people laying on a picknic table out front. Inside looks good. I wouldn't eat here. We stopped into this cute little hole-in-the-wall stop to grab a quick soft drink. We all looked at each other with eyes like saucers when we entered and were hit by the delicious scent of fresh baking pizza. Sold right then and there, we decided to order. Pepperoni, Bacon, Ranch pizza???? There were numerous choices, but this was the one that caught all our eyes. Some of us, being from Texas where we use ranch dressing like salt and pepper, decided hands-down that THAT was the pizza for us! The other two were not so convinced, but gave in and agreed to the choice. FANTASTIC !!!! The crust was light and crispy on the bottom and light and fluffy on top. The seasoning was SUPERB down to the gentle bursts of garlic that truly "made" the pizza. Finding larger bits of well-roasted and hand-crushed fresh garlic clove intermittently, we all knew when one of us had found another by the look of rapture. The two friends were instant converts and the first to grab a second slice! Everything in the deli area had a handmade artisan/gourmet look to it and appeared as if all the meats, cheeses, and vegetables had just been delivered that morning. I don't know that and didn't ask, it just looked that way. So, I want to try something else there the next time I'm in the area. However, that'll be hard t' do because that Pepperoni, Bacon, Ranch pizza was OUT OF THIS WORLD! Oh, and really nice, everything was made and baked right behind the counter fresh when ordered.
