TLDR: go here if you're looking for an affordable and delicious Sonoma experience. This restaurant was fantastic. My boyfriend and I had dinner here tonight (a Thursday) while visiting the area. I was looking for a restaurant that used local ingredients, and this fit the bill. The food was delicious. We got the heirloom tomato salad (boyfriend's favorite), the little gem Caesar salad (my favorite), a half-mushroom-half-blue-cheese pizza (both great, but only get the blue cheese if you LOVE blue cheese bc it was very funky), and the pot roast (SO TENDER). The prices are extremely reasonable and the portions are HUGE. The pot roast alone could have fed 4 people as a main dish. You're basically guaranteed to have leftovers. The staff was friendly and attentive. They had a nice, affordable wine list. Parking was very easy. My only regret is not having a dessert :( read more

I told them I'd give them a good review. Their oils, herbs, dairy, the halibut -- everything -- was very fresh. The halibut was flaky on the inside, crusty on the outside, done to perfection. The fingerling potatoes and asparagus had just the right textures. The mushrooms on the pizza were diverse and of high quality. (I think there was even a Morel in there!) The Brussels sprouts were roasted just right. The most telling: Even though they prepare you a rich meal, you don't go away with that heavy feeling, like someone's trying to kill you by feeding you fat. Even having the leftovers the day after didn't give that feeling. Rich, but not excessive, with very fresh ingredients. I would rather that the meal was a bit less rich, maybe. Last night I had my birthday dinner at Hazel. Everything was absolutely perfect. The service was absolutely fantastic!! The food was incredible! Visited wine country recently and after being recommended by a local we went and had a wonderful farm to table meal. My better half had the meatloaf, I opted for the pizza and a salad. Probably one of the best pepperoni pizzas I ever had. I am not a meatloaf person but enjoyed their take of the classic American dish and it was preset tasty! The staff was very friendly as well. Hazel has long been a favorite of mine. I was desolate when Bistro des Copines, Hazel's predecessor, closed but this has been a truly worthy replacement. It's a great example of a restaurant that knows what it's good it. The menu is not huge but everything is done with care. Their pizza is among the best in Sonoma County. We love this restaurant! Found it four years ago when we stayed at Occidental Lodge for a weekend and have been returning every year during our weekend getaway. The pizzas are a big hit with my sons. The wife loves the fish dishes and the ribeye is my favorite. The fried brussels sprouts are our go to appetizer. My sons didn't enjoy brussels sprouts until we tried them here! The fresh apricot jam is to die for... Brunch always includes the beignets! Can't wait to return next year! read more

We started with the bacon brussel sprouts which were fantastic, then got our meatloaf and chicken entrees which were both excellent, perfectly cooked and large portions which we appreciate. Deducted one star as the apple pie type dessert we ordered was just overwhelmingly sugary with no real taste of apple. This spot is very cute and very quaint. The kitchen is open concept in the dining area. You can see the giant brick oven for pizza. We ordered the ribs to share and a meat pepperoni pizza. Also- we got an order of bread and a sundae to finish the meal. The ribs were finger licking good. However, I'm so sad to say the pizza was not my favorite! I don't enjoy when I pick up a slice and the toppings all slide off. So before you know it you're eating the crust and bread alone, and scooping the toppings into your hand. Overall, not a great pizza experience! Too oily and messy for my taste. The ribs were sooooo good though. If I ever stop by again, I'll order just the ribs! The bread was very fresh- but very dense with a soda flavor. Some may love that, I found it difficult to eat. But it's hard to be mad about fresh bread. The sundae was delish- hard to go wrong with a sundae. This place does deserve 4 stars. It was an nice dining experience. If the pizza was more on point- a five star experience. What a gem, hidden in magical Occidental. Food is excellent. We had the home made sourdough bread - they serve a whole loaf! The brussle sprouts were so good. We got two main courses, which was way too much - the portions are BIG. The schnitzel was huge and excellent. We got the pot roast based on other reviews here and actually were not as impressed - it was a bit burnt and dry and even though everything with it was really good, the meat itself was just OK. The octopus salad was probably the best I've ever had, the scallop crudo was divine, the pita plate was was a packed plate full of fun. Hazel offers welcoming and excellent service. We started with the fresh sour dough bread, home baked with olive oil and was very filling. My husband enjoyed the tender home style pot roast and was almost able to finish this large portion. Halibut was fantastic and made to order as I did not want potato and was offered additional fresh asparagus. There was Rhubarb Cobbler that was a delight. We will happily return! Found this jewel of a restaurant accidentally and could not have been happier. The server was so personable and the dishes we ordered were perfect!! There is something very special about this restaurant. You can tell the minute you walk in, you can feel the love they put into their ambiance and their cooking. I wish I lived closer so that I could be a regular. Whenever I'm in the area, if at all possible, I WILL eat only here!! You must try this restaurant. My friend had the ribs as an entree and used the homemade sourdough bread to soak up all the goodness that was enveloping the ribs. I had the pot roast and sorry mom, it was just as good ( probably better) if I'm being honest!! Their sourdough bread is the owner's wife's recipe and made there. What an experience, when going to occidental over the years I've always eaten at Negris but the night I was coming in to occidental it was closed. I saw that Hazel was open so I made reservations and looking at the menu was looking forward to it. My plan was to order Pork Schnitzel I've made it my whole life and loved the chance to try another version. When we arrived it was almost 8pm and the restaurant was full. We were seated right away and served delicious warm bread with olive oil. I ordered the schnitzel and was told they had just ran but the gentleman at the table next to me gave me a bite of his. This was my first time ever going to Hazel. We went because of Restaurant Week but we will definitely be back. The portion size was huge and everything we had was delicious. Highly recommend the Brussel sprouts. And any of their desserts, we had the apple crisp though. Not overly sweet at all and the crumble was amazing. Both of us brought home almost our entire entree. Pizza is absolutely amazing. Literally one of the best I've had whether here in the states, Italy or from my kitchen. In fact, I've been there so many times that the Chef was amazing enough to share with me his gastrointestinal phenomenon of sausage making skills. Came close but mine still doesn't compare to his. All tbe ingredients are locally sourced and made in house. Everyone is friendly and what one would want when dining out. Wow... first time in Occidental, CA and we decided to snag a table at Hazel. Overall, busy/nice environment. Inside/outside dining options. Friendly/contemporary environment/team. Menu items varied. I always ask the server their favorites and what's popular. He suggested the sourdough starter, ribs, and post roast (I like that he said it wasn't his personal favorite but that people who come love it - the honesty gets high marks!) ... we did a starter of the sourdough, (the owners make it from their family sourdough culture dating back a long time), dense, warm, tasty! My spouse for the quinoa vegetarian dish and LOVED it. I went with the pot roast as a local favorite (pictured). Both were HUGE portions!!!! Easily two meals out of it. Highly recommended if you are in the area. They offer corkage, so bring a bottle of your local favorite, as the only slight criticism is the wine menu for the location/area isn't strong. We've previously been here for weekend brunch and find it to be one of our favorite brunch spots. The quality of food is great in every bite. And do go for the beignets, they are a decadent treat. Last week we had a delicious dinner at Hazel. The Brussels sprouts were so good and crispy, the arugula beet salad was beautiful and tasty, the pizza was so delectable we wanted to order another but we had already ordered the pot roast so we restrained from doing so. We went with Hazel for our intimate wedding dinner of 15 people and we could not have been more pleased with our choice. It was difficult to pick because we are living in a different state and had to go off of online reviews. However, our first reason for picking Hazel was because of the online reviews. Secondly, the interaction over the phone (with anyone) was pleasant and helpful. Thirdly, we were able to see the menu beforehand and notice the range of food items, at reasonable prices!! Lastly, it seemed small and cozy from the online images and definitely fit our style. I didn't realize our waitress was the owner but she was absolutely wonderful to us the whole time! The food was SO delicious, the atmosphere was relaxing on the patio and they were amazing to offer heat lamps. Unfortunately, I heard from many of my guests that their coffee was cold (after we had left) and the bathroom situation was less than ideal. However, with it being such a small restaurant, we really didn't mind. Would absolutely come back! Hopefully next time we could experience the bakery side of things, as I've heard really good things about that as well! 10/10. read more
