We ate at Hazel's on the last day of the year, an early reservation, after a pleasant drive out to Occidental. Everything about the dining experience at Hazel's was absolutely fantastic. Desiree, our server, was very pleasant, attentive, but not obtrusive. She and everybody else were very friendly. The Fried Brussels were amazing along with delicious Homemade Sourdough. My wife had the Pot Roast, I had the Roast Chicken. I must add that I had a tasty Gowan Cider from Philo. Later she had a Sundae, I had Granny Smith Apple Crumble with ice cream. I would have loved to have actually tasted the food, but we never even got that far. This review is solely based on customer service interactions. From the moment we walked in at 5:05pm (dinner service starts at 5pm) we were asked if we had a reservation. I kindly told the server (who I believe to be a server based on his attire) that we did not but would love to have dinner for the three of us, including a small child under 1 years old. At this time, there was no one is the restaurant. All tables were open including outdoor dinning. The server kindly told us that they were fully booked. This is where I started to get frustrated because there was clearly no one in the restaurant. I couldn't imagine this place, which is basically in the middle of no where, didn't have room to accommodate us at the first seating of the evening. I will say that he did offer us an outside high top table in what looked to be in the parking lot which I had to turn down because with a small child, high tops with barstools is impossible. This table was also sloped at a downward angle which again was impossible to sit. Besides this point, there were literally approx. 15-20 other tables that would have worked. My biggest gripe is that if I were the owner of this small restaurant in a secluded location I would never turn a customer away. Turning customers away is basically saying that you don't need my business because your business is doing so well that you don't need my money. Gordon Ramsey would be appalled by such service. The worst thing was that an hour later we walked by the restaurant on our way home and some of those empty tables were still empty, about 50%. We would have been easily fed and gone because before those tables were ever going to be used. From past experiences, if a restaurant is to ever earn a Michelin star they will have to welcome and treat walk-in customers with respect and service. At the end of the day, I can only believe this restaurant does so good they can turn customers away. Sadly disappointed. read more

We were recommended this place during our overnight stay in Occidental. It is a cute place with a nicely put together menu, with options for vegan and GF guests. We shared the Brussels sprouts and a pepperoni pizza. The Brussels sprouts were a lil too overdone and slightly saltier than I prefer. The pizza was delicious and quite filling. We ordered the Hazel sundae for dessert and it was just perfect. I am not a big ice cream fanatic, but the salted caramel flavor with generous portions of butterscotch and salted caramel chunks blended it, made it a delectable treat. This place was recommended by friends, so we went. The service and ambiance were quite nice with a very attentive server. The bathroom is outside around the back of the building. We each decided to order the individual pizza; one was pepperoni and the other a spicy sausage/ egg. The first was very greasy and thin, but lots of pepperoni. The second was a hot mess! Gooey egg yolk flowing all over, and hard to cut off a wedge without destroying the whole dish. It was rather flavorless for being called spicy sausage. The crusts were very thin and cracker hard to cut in order to remove a wedge. Beneath each was a thin piece of paper which disintegrated with the grease and cut up with the pizzas, resulting in paper in the fork with the bite. Each was so loose that one could not pick up a wedge to eat by hand without the topping flowing off. All in all, the only pizza I have ever had in my life which was worse was the very cheapest frozen grocery store type. The chocolate dessert was excellent. The order of dipping bread was quite hot and tasty but with a crust so hard it could cut diamonds. So, one order of bread, two pizzas, two beers and one dessert resulted in a tab of over $80. We tipped nicely as the server isn't responsible for the food quality. We were very disappointed and felt confused. Perhaps their entree dinners are better quality. read more

Great food, ambience and service. Every couple years my wife and I come up from Occidental and the Russian River and this is now the 3rd time we have come to Hazel. I had the Ribeye and my wife had the ribs and both were absolutely delicious, the portions were huge (we have left overs) and the cappuccino I had after the dinner was the best I've had in the USA. What a gem! Everything was great at Hazel, from the warm casual atmosphere to the amazing food. This visit was with my mom, and we split the chicken and the ribeye as neither of us could decide what we wanted. The portions, as usual, are generous and we went home with a couple of doggie bags (not for the dogs!). Mom's declared the chicken her fave and I loved the sauce so much I was eating it alone with a spoon. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and the potatoes were a great complement--thick cut and crispy outside with a creamy center. A great chimichurri sauce and bed of delicious greens made it sing. Our server was attentive and recommended wines that we loved, and was chatty and fun. We couldn't pass up dessert despite being stuffed and had a blueberry crisp and the week's pie which was a peanut butter cream (I'll be seeing that in my dreams). Whew! A really nice experience. Occidental has a charming mini-downtown including this sophisticated, yet outdoor-seating-dog-friendly restaurant. We would have had more food, but the (delicious and HUGE) brussels sprouts plus bacon appetizer slowed us down. It was certainly the winner among our items. The scallops crudo looked beautiful and had a nice texture but the taste was very "acid forward" - only for the strongest of ceviche enthusiasts. Mushroom pizza had a wonderful truffle sauce... needed more salt though. The place had a classy antique feel to it and great service. Would recommend. read more

Came to Occidental from Solano county to celebrate my birthday. We were going to have dinner somewhere else but then we saw this place and decided to eat here. Firstly, the ambiance is stunning and quaint! It reminded me of a low key European dining experience. We had the Caesar salad, pepperoni pizza, and the roasted chicken and OH MY GOD everything was so GOOD! The chicken was by far my favorite! The flavors were dancing in my mouth and I audibly let out an "mmm" at least three times! For dessert I got a cappuccino and the Granny Smith Apple Crisp and I devoured it all. Suffice to say I loved this place. The service is amazing, the staff is amazing and the food is amazing. Wow, thank you Yelpers for helping us find this gem of a place while on vacation in Bodega Bay. We went for dinner after making reservations using the most handy Yelp app. It didn't disappoint. Everything we had was phenomenal. When I inquired about their wines by the glass Pinot Noir selections, our server recommended Paul Mathew. It was delicious. I had the margarita pizza and my gf had the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes. Both entrees tasted amazing. For dessert we had the ice cream sundae and the strawberry shortcake. Both were winners. Being a vegan, I always seek out a restaurant worth originality or creative takes on standards. I found both at Hazel. While they serve comfort foods like pizza, roast chicken and pot roast, I was happy to find a vegan Caesar with fried capers and nutritional yeast. Delicious. For the main dish, they came up with a red quinoa with mushrooms and kale. Original and unexpected, as well as delicious. We sopped up the broth with the homemade sourdough bread. Overrated! Uncomfortable! We were visiting and stayed overnight. Make reservations for a table for 2. Our reservation was for 6 pm. When we arrived, the restaurant was pretty empty, with about 3 or 4 tables filled(about 20% filled). The host walked us to a 2 person small table in the middle of the restaurant. In my mind, thinking they must be full. Right after we sat down, the host walked 2 people to a large table (4 person table) by the window. Not long after, the same host walked 2 people (both Asian) to the small table right next to us. There are still plenty of large table around. Again, i give them the benefit of the doubt they have large group coming in later. Nope, only one table with 3 people all other tables were given to 2 people. Tables didn't fill up until we were almost done with our meal. The food was so so. I order the roasted chicken, which is dry. Feels like chicken was precooked and reheat. Plus, it was salty. I wish I had read their low rating reviews before deciding to come here. Our waiter is new (6 months) and is the only good thing they have there. I felt very awkward throughout the meal. Honestly, the food was just ok. Had a pizza. It was blackened on the bottom. Not such a bad thing. The real problem was the lack of hospitality. I didn't feel welcome. There were no smiles. We were getting a Togo order. The guy who was gonna take our order, as I was telling him, walked away somewhere into the back and didn't return for almost 5 minutes. As part of Sonoma County restaurant week, I decided to try Hazel in Occidental CA. Hazel is a Mediterranean style cuisine restaurant- and its very good. We were seated quickly. It's a small restaurant so you will get to know the people at the table next to you. The staff is friendly and professional. Hazel has a good selection of beer, wine, and specialty cocktails. The food is excellent. There's two wood fire ovens where most of the dishes are cooked. I ordered the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes. It was excellent. Chicken was tender, juicy, and flavorful. The potatoes were light, and buttery. The desert are also great! Pies, chocolate dishes, and ice cream. It's not inexpensive, but definitely worth going for a night out or special occasion. read more

The Wife and I went to Hazel with our youngest son (6yrs old). We had not dined here before, and were excited to try it. We were seated right away and tended to by our Waitor almost immediately. He was very professional and polite. We started with the Brussel Sprouts, which were delicious. Then came our entrees. The Ribeye was wonderfully prepared, and the Pork Schnitzel was absolutely amazing. They were both topped with what our Waitor referred to as "Salsa Verde", which I would describe as Green Onion / Garlic bliss. Our son completely finished his Mozzarella Pizza. He said it was "delicious". It was a great dining experience to end the evening. We will most definitely be back...soon! read more

Beautiful seasonal food carefully prepared just for you. Mixed green salad showcases gorgeous multicolored lettuce with goat cheese, diced beets and the thinnest sliced fennel I've ever seen wow. Marcona almonds added a lovely crunch. Next was the Point Reyes blue cheese pizza with caramelized onions and arugula. Salty, sweet, bitter all at once oh yum. Lee's pot roast was tender and better than we make at home, dang. Horseradish cream was a perfect complement. Get dessert, it's all made in house. Lee got the sundae with house made Hot fudge and salted almond brittle Wow. I got the lemon cheesecake pie which was tangy and creamy. Service is very attentive and efficient. Small, quiet and communal, a simple menu, local ingredients, the food is never less than stellar, and everything you eat is the personal work of the terrific chef. The food is not to par for the prices they charge. The fish dish was good. Maybe that was freshly cooked. The sides dishes were better. Mash potatoes were good. Salads good. Little disappointed. Hazel is a gem of a restaurant that is worth seeking out. Last minute reservations on a Wednesday night had my husband and I sitting at the Chef's Counter, which was delightful. It was a pleasure to watch the chef and pizza oven master. The menu is small but well thought out, with items to suit all special diets. Portions are generous. Our starter course was Fried Brussels Sprouts topped with bacon and parmesan cheese. Excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed my Roasted Chicken entree. I make a mean roast chicken, but this was even more tender and flavorful than mine. My husband enjoyed his Pork Schnitzel, served with red cabbage and mashed potatoes. Don't miss out on the house made bread, sliced to order and served warm, accompanied by locally produced Olive Queen Olive. Dessert was a decadent ice cream sundae. We had a fabulous meal at Hazel last night. Such great care taken with the food, very generous portions, and excellent service - the server was a fun but attentive professional. My husband and I loved our salad starters. I got the Baby Mixed Lettuce salad, and it had a lovely combination of buttery greens with crisp apple and thinly sliced fennel, dolloped with creamy fromage Blanc. My husband was very pleased with his Little Gems salad. My entree was a beautiful gigantic bowl of Seafood Stew, which had generous portions of mussels, clams, shrimp, and fish, in a wonderfully flavored broth. My husband had the Mushroom Pizza - the pizza had a nice smoky crust and had delicious toppings. We ended our evening sharing a decadent sundae. It was the perfect end to a perfect meal. My husband and I had dinner here while staying in an ADORABLE air bnb up the road in Occidental. The food was quite good, I got a sausage and egg pizza and my husband got a beef stew (I believe?). We both loved our dinner- I especially loved the pizza crust as it was thin and crispy. I was a bit disappointed with our seating, having made a reservation well in advance, we were seated right near the entrance at a very small table that felt cramped and in the way of a lot of walking traffic. I was distracted by the door opening and closing, as well as customers coming in for pickup of takeout or sitting at the bar.
