Omelette and a wonderful biscuit
Dana A.

What a fun place for breakfast! We enjoyed the omelette, Benedict, and eggs and bacon with biscuits and jelly. The jelly was fresh and delicious. We had cappuccino, chai and a mocha, they were a bit strong but I guess it's what we needed! We would definitely return!!!

Cobb salad, loaded potatoes on waffle fries, Howard's Smash Burger and Berry Smoothie.

I live in Occidental and I have frequented this place on and off for 10 years. Covid was tough but it seems they have pulled through and are back to making really good food. I hear there is an ownership change but I hope they hold onto their wonderful staff. Occidental never disappoints with its comfy vintage ambiance.

Lavender Oatmilk Latte

We visited Howard's while staying with family who highly recommended it--and it did not disappoint! The menu is extensive, offering a wide range of breakfast and lunch options, a full smoothie menu, and even a special menu for your pup if they're tagging along. The menu offers lots of customizable options be vegan or vegetarian based on preferences. We started with lavender oat milk lattes, which were absolute perfection--so smooth and delicious! I'll be grabbing one every day while I'm in town. For breakfast, I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, and they were hands down the best I've ever had. I loved the presentation with rolled tortillas on the side and a few underneath--perfect for assembling your own breakfast tacos. The flavors were spot-on. My husband got the Salmon Benedict and loved that it featured fresh, not smoked, salmon. The seasoned potatoes on the side were packed with a unique flavor. All the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. Although you order at the counter, they bring the food to your table and checked in with us a couple of times during the meal to see if we needed anything or how things were tasting--wonderful service! The space itself is charming and cozy, with a small covered patio and a few outdoor tables on the side. Inside, there's plenty of air-conditioned seating and cute decor that adds to the overall fun, relaxed vibe. We loved everything about this place. I'm already planning to go back tomorrow--and definitely again the next time we're in town--to try more of the delicious-looking menu items!

Veggie omelet

Made the short drive into Occidental for breakfast. The small downtown is nice and quaint. Received a friendly greeting and were seated immediately even though the place was pretty busy. Started with a nice cup of coffee. Ordered the corned beef hash and the rest of our party had the Benedict and veggie omelets. I should have noticed that everyone has the giant heart shaped biscuit but I got my go-to English muffin. The hash was good, now awesome. The Benedict was good too but the potatoes were too herby for our taste. The veggie omelets were chock full of veggies and were nice sized. Good service... good spot for a local breakfast.

An empty plate, residual pulp on the orange juice glass, and a cappuccino cup with the stained foam lingering.

I came in here hoping to have a half-way decent waffle, tolerable orange juice, and a semi strong cappuccino and I was shown how terribly I had underestimated this place. The waffle special featured a carmelized apple so of course I ordered it and it was the best decision I have made in weeks. From the texture of the waffle to the homemade whipped cream and the perfectly cooked apples, I was grateful for every bite. When I was given my orange juice, I was joyfully surpised at the tempture being tempid since fresh orange juice is best served that way and not ice cold. Delicious, pulpy, real. Finally the cappuccino was exactly what I needed to feel human again today. Served at a drinkable temperature with an unpolished foam and sharpness I was craving. The team is so patient and focused while achieving this amazing experience and I cannot emphasize enough that the wait in line was worth every item as this has satisfied my yearning for a great waffle, fresh orange juice, and a lovely cappuccino. Keep up the amazing job!

Beans, greens, & dreams with all the additions.

Most delicious breakfast today! I had beans greens n dreams plus splurged on bacon Ama avocado, putting the price up to just below $20 for the dish, but omg was it worth it. So yummy with the pesto sauce n bacon yet felt healthy with perfectly done greens, fresh avocado and yummy white beans. I asked for my eggs to be done fried over medium and it was done to perfection for me; no runny whites, Yellow still soft and a little runny. Highly recommended, especially If your trying to not to do the classic greasy dinner thing; and the bacon was so good; obviously a high quality brand, as it was perfectly tasty and smoky and thick not too salty and not burned too a crisp, etc. My husband got the smoked salmon Benedict which i tasted; delicious! Yummy "truly smoked" salmon, NOT the lox type; and the hollandaise was the real deal made from scratch, (ie made with real butter n egg). My son got eggs n bacon n potatoes, all made perfectly. He also got a side of biscuits n gravy because we are all connisoures in that dept, similar to the hollandaise dept, it passed the test made with a bit of sausage, creamy n!). Coffee good too! Sorry, we were so hungry i forgot to take pics first showing presentation. By the time i remembered, only my bean dish looked ok and not demolished. In the end we got to meet the cool owner Val who said he was originally from Roma Gypsy people in Romania. He said most all their ingredients is sourced local and organic! The place is adorable too, an old Victorian themed after a railway station of yesteryear. It was also a pleasure to hear one of the waitresses singing along full of heart to the recorded piped music.

On the wall was a chalkboard with the list of local farmers and vendors that they used to supply their restaurant. I loved how fresh and flavorful all the food was, but I loved their collaboration with small local business owners to provide them with things like eggs and dairy. I had an omelette with spinach, caramelized, tomatoes, chicken sausage, and goat cheese. This was one of the most delicious bites I've had at a breakfast spot in a long time. We also shared an order of beignets that came with some fresh apple butter, which was to die for! It felt like taking a bit off fall weather if that makes sense. My boyfriend had some biscuits and country gravy with a side of sausage and fried eggs. He loved everything that he ate as well. He also had a bloody Mary, which was made with Soju. The flavor and quality was top notch and you hardly missed the vodka from the drink. Our server was very friendly, and he offered some insight into the quality of the Soju and the vendors that they work with. I just really loved the care that this restaurant put into not only service but the food that they're producing.

We ordered huevos rancheros with orange juice, and a caprese sandwich with a side of soup. The eggs were tasty, but it wasn't very hearty. I was hungry again within an hour. Lots of colorful sauce arranged around the dish, most of it wasted. The sandwich had the aoli, even though The Wife asked for it without. The sandwich was hearty, but kind of a mess. Assembled like someone wanted to leave. The space is attractive, with interesting local art on the walls, but frankly the prices ($20 for the eggs, $27 for the sandwich, $7 for a small juice) were out of line.

Now let's get to the best part: the FOOD!! The fries are so crispy and delicious because they are fried in tallow instead of toxic soybean oil! We both got the Philly cheesesteak sandwiches, and everything about them was delicious. The meat was tender and not fatty, the cheese was melty and generous, and the produce was fresh! The presentation of the sandwiches were great and looked appetizing. However, my son didn't find the smash burger a bit compared to those he tried in other places. The fries were not really a big deal here. The clam chowder had other ingredients like ham and corn. I prefer the cream heavy type of chowder than theirs which was more the soupy type. It seemed it needed more flavor. The view of the Russian River was so pretty. It was a long and winding road drive to the restaurant from Santa Rosa, better to stop here after coming from Bodega bay to avoid the winding roads. Menu item prices should be adjusted lower due.

Everything we ordered was well-prepared and delicious, but the standout dishes were the beet salad and the shrimp & grits. The beet salad had a perfect mix of textures; chopped pistachios, tender beets, and crunchy radishes over a pillowy ricotta. I finished the salad wishing there was more. The shrimp & grits featured a potlikker sauce that absolutely lived up to the hype; it made the dish. I wish the shrimp & grits were served in a bowl rather than a shallow dish. I found myself chasing the sauce and polenta around the plate, trying not to push it over the edge. That said, if it were in a bowl, I might have just drank the sauce, so perhaps this is the restaurant's way of preserving a bit of dignity for its guests. We hit happy hour, and wow--it's a good one. Tons of interesting bites and a solid drink lineup. I went with a whiskey sour, my friend had the ginger beer on draft (very refreshing), and we shared the prawns, Brussels sprouts, and creamy mac & cheese. Everything was seriously delicious. Shoutout to our server, Melanie--friendly, attentive, and totally on it, even with the place packed. A couple things to note: it does get loud, so maybe not your spot if you're after a quiet, intimate dinner. Also, the happy hour menu listed Brussels sprouts but didn't mention bacon--I'm vegetarian, so that was a bit of a surprise. (It is noted on the regular dinner menu, which I admittedly didn't check.)
