So good we went twice on our 3 day quick trip to Austin. Made reservations Friday night and it was quite lively. Food and drinks were delicious, especially the bread pudding. We stopped back by Saturday after mediocre food at another establishment and got drinks and the bread pudding again. Friday our waitress was nice but Saturday the bartender was on it, he made the best cocktails. Didn't get his name, but he was a young black guy who made sure we were taken care of. Love the ambiance and decor at Haywire! We went for Saturday brunch for our anniversary and it was delicious. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly and gave us a few recommendations. Ordered an espresso martini and a blackberry whiskey drink. Both were good, nothing to write home about but solid drinks nonetheless. We were pleasantly surprised by the portions of our meal- especially for a restaurant in Austin. I appreciated that on the crab cake Benedict, the biscuit wasn't too heavy or thick so you could really taste the crab cake and didn't get full on a biscuit. We started off with the appetizer sampler, which comes with an onion ring tower, fried green tomatoes, elk tacos and queso and chips. And wow they know how to with that deep fryer, cause everything was golden brown perfection. The dipping sauces were in point, whether it be the creamy green or the spicier mayo one. My favorite was the green tomatoes, followed by the giant onion ring. Definitely good to split with like 6 people. It's probably a great place to take someone who is visiting. We got the HH elk tacos ($7), half order of the onion rings ($5, thank you for the bartender telling us they were huge and to get a half order because we couldn't even finish all three), and a smoked whiskey. The elk tacos were not gamey at all, and were flavorful and salty. The onion rings were amazing - the breading was almost like a fried chicken batter. I highly recommend doing a reservation! My waitress was friendly. The ambiance is nice and this place is pretty busy. The upstairs area is nice as well. The bars on both floors were packed with no room to spare. The menu is just the right size and not too much going on . I ordered the lady bird drink and it was about bursting with flavor without the extra syrup. Got my entree I got the Texas Red fish. The Texas Red fish had shrimp with lump crab, a sauce, mashed potatoes, and a citrus salad. I asked the waitress could I switch my salad to brussel sprouts and he told me that I could. He came back to my table and said that I couldn't. If a dish is $35, I should be able to switch my side out with something I prefer. I got my dish and saw the mashed potatoes first. The salad was so tiny with 3.5 ingredients. The salad added nothing to the dish, that is why I wish I would've had my brussel sprouts. The lump crab was minimal and I had another 3 shrimp. For $35, this dish could've been prepared better. The taste wasn't bad. My issue is the quantity. If I can switch my side, please do better with your selection! Have been here a few times for sit down dinner and always a great experience. Food is always fresh and tasty. They know how to make a good cocktail. Had a birthday party most recently and the process couldn't have been better. Party was about 24 folks. We were able to upgrade rooms very close to the party date without any hassle. I picked Haywire for by better late than never birthday meal with my family. Reservations made; initial steps like being greeted and getting seated went fine. Alcohol ordered, and then we watch the bartender in the cowboy hat do nothing for about 10 minutes. We inquired and our server had to basically ask for our drinks. That's when he finally made them. We chose the Elk Tacos and the Pork Belly bites as our starters. The tacos beat out the belly unless you factor in the glaze on the bites. Entrees incoming; BTW our server has been keeping up with drink refills and even snagged another glass of wine for my mom. An expeditor has served us but has failed to ask if there was anything she could get for us. Another 10 minutes to get salt/pepper, butter, and jam to the table. I mean we're at brunch Haywire peeps. Not hard to think these items would be asked for especially when there's a biscuit and extra cornbread sitting on the table. The Crab Cake Benedict was artfully presented and packed good flavor. Decided to meet up with a friend for dinner and we decided on Haywire as this would be a new place to try for both of us. Honestly we were surprised by how great the food was. Our server and the experience went well. Our server was prompt, made sure to ask about any allergy info and checked on dishes for us because of my nut allergy. I was really impressed and appreciated the effort to make sure there wasn't cross contamination. We skipped apps and went straight for entres and wine. The wine pour was fair. For entrees, I had the blackened catfish and shrimp. My friend got the stroganoff and was a big fan. Both entrees were generously portioned and came out well seasoned. We ordered a bunch of appetizers. I tried the elk tacos and it was delicious. Also, probably one of the biggest onion rings I've ever had. The pork burnt ends were really good too. I think you can walk in and the staff is very accommodating but you may have to wait. Luckily, my friend made a reservation and we were promptly sat. Our server was top notch from start to finish. She was attentive and checked on us frequently. Our group ordered the Chef's "Favorite 4" which consisted of onion rings, queso blanco and chips, mini elk tacos, and friend green tomatoes. Everything was delicious with exception to the tacos because I didn't eat them. I had to leave a little room for my ribs platter which was a good call because they almost covered my entire plate. The ribs were delicious once I went around a thick dry chunk. I swapped the mac and cheese side with tallow fries which felt dry like they'd been sitting around for a minute. We took our parents here for Christmas Eve and it couldn't have been more perfect. The smell of beef tallow in the air starts making your tummy grumble as soon as you walk in. The atmosphere is classy and Texan all wrapped into one. Wear you boots and hats if you dine here and you will fit right in! ALL of the staff we encountered were super helpful and friendly and after dinner we went on a tour of all the different rooms. This restaurant is much bigger than it seems, so it was fun to explore. The appetizer we chose to start with was fried green tomatoes, and they were the perfect amount of crunchiness- the tomatoe its self was thick and juicy! Between our guests we ate steaks, chicken fried steak, some cocktails and finished with their bread pudding. I for one have never actually gone out to dinner on Christmas Eve, but needed a break from cooking this year. I think this may be a new tradition for us as we were all treated so kindly and the food was 10/10! Must love meat as their fry oil is beef tallow, which I can appreciate for eating healthier. We visited Haywire around 5:15 on a Friday before catching a concert. I highly recommend making a Rez a few days in advance because they are booking up quickly. We ordered the haywire old fashioned, the caramel rye old fashioned, and we split the chicken fried chicken. Everything was really good. Service was kind of slow, but they were really busy. My big issue with the burger was the bun. It was too thick for the beef, untoasted and unseasoned. Cold and tasted almost stale. I ended up just eating the burger out of the bun. My boyfriend and I both loved the mac and cheese- soooo filling. Overall food was good and portions were on point, For dessert we had the whiskey bread pudding - DELICIOUS. The best part of the night was our amazing server. I forget her name, but she had red hair and is dating another server there. She was one of the best waitresses I have ever had in my life, and I'd go back just to sit in her section again. The chairs are made from cowhides, heads of cattle on the walls, and glamorous lighting fixtures. Perfect for business lunches, anniversaries, or to just great cuisine. They have a nice bar scene stocked full of high-end liquor, and recommend one of their Old Fashioneds. All house ingredients are sourced from the great state of Texas. I ordered the Chicken Club and my wife ordered the Smoked Fried Chicken (Wednesday only Daily Plate). It truly had that Texan ambiance and seated near the kitchen. The service was top notch. Both plates looked very presentable and the chicken club tasted very good and had many ingredients all perfected fit well. It was a pretty big sandwich and included tasty Tallow Fries. I tried the fired chicken and the crust was superbly mouthwatering and the chicken had that great smokey flavor. I wished I could eat it all. Best chicken I had in a long while. It came with mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans. The mashed potatoes were PHENOMENAL. Absolutely perfect in texture and flavor. The chicken fried steak was good, but could have been warmer. Personally I love spots that have daily specials. The prime rib steak sandwich was divine. I am still reeling from the most fantastical dinner we've had in celebration of my husband's birthday tonight. I snagged reservations for the highly anticipated opening of Haywire and they exceeded all expectations in making our night such a fun and fantastic fanfare with celebrating us and taking such good care of us. From the moment we walked in, the hosts were easy in getting us checked in, sat down and we easily got taken care of by Summer, she was such a sweetheart in attending to us and our little one. Got his drink order in, food order in and just knew from the get go how to keep the hustle going without making us feel rushed once, she was such a good wealth of knowledge of the menu, the recommendations and explanation of dishes was also highly appreciated as she explained to us a lot of the dishes origins and backstory which made for such a rewarding meal as we were soaking in how tasty the food was and also, how breathtaking the interior decor of the restaurant experience was. You'll note the main floor is bustling and you can also peek at the open kitchen, we were welcomed to explore the hidden bookshelf room nook along with exploring the second floor to see the panoramic views of rock rose on this rainy day, and we so look forward to returning to dine in the fantastical Texas space that haywire has called home in Austin. Food highlight: Hubs ordered the low and slow chicken entree, and I went with the Texas Redfish, both were excellent in their delivery and presentation, along with portion size. The Texas four as our appetizer start was a huge portion, and our little one with his mac and cheese with fries for a kids menu option along with coloring was a very welcome addition to keep him entertained in this upscale dining where everyone was welcoming and so kind to our dinner affair. We also had a warm howdy from Hondo, part of the management team here at Haywire Austin, and he was so sweet in sharing his story and welcoming us into their first few days of operation, and generous offered a lovely bread pudding for husband's birthday celebration festivities which my little family all indulged on. This has been under construction in the Domain for the longest time and it's awesome to finally go inside. Sadly, I didn't have enough time for more than a drink this time, but the staff offered me a tour while I was there which was so nice of them, and everything looks great. While the upstairs is still closed to finish construction, the ground floor has an attractive bar on one end, plenty of table seating in the middle, a semi-open kitchen on the left side, and a few smaller rooms and dining areas including the coolest private room with a round table hidden behind built-in bookshelves for the ultimate in exclusivity. The upscale decor and materials are gorgeous and do a good job of expressing their Texas cattle baron aesthetic with stone and leather and wood, with some bold style choices as well. The menu is definitely on the pricey side, but they have some very intriguing options like elk in addition to less exotic Texas fare. I can't wait to come back and explore. read more
