The Big Hat burger is just about perfect. It's the kind of burger with two thin patties, well-done and crispy. You can get a wheat bun and real cheese if you ask. I also love the lettuce "buns", which work surprisingly well, and the "Hat" sauce. Lettuce, tomatoes, and onions are fresh and crisp. The fries are disappointing; "fresh" is not actually good in a french fry. Frozen, or parboiled, or otherwise precooked potatoes give you the crisp-on-the-outside, soft-inside fries that I love. These are more limp and greasy, not my thing. But the burgers are excellent, especially for the reasonable prices. read more

This place never fails to disappoint...people are nice and it's convenient but they just can't seem to get the food right. Every time I decide maybe I should give it another shot I prove myself wrong. They have a really great gluten free burger bun. The fries were over seasoned but overall my meal was very yummy. The staff was extremely friendly. I had a burger, fries, and a soda and it was $15, which seemed a little pricey for fast food (but you take what you can get when you have celiac). 3 stars because there was a hair in my burger. Have stopped a few times as I'm driving up Burnet, to pick up a burger and fries. I keep wanting Hat Creek to be a good place to pick up a burger and fries. The fries are best described as limp greasy potato shrapnel in a paper cone. With a little salt they're fairly tasty, but with the limp and the grease, they make me feel disgusted at myself for eating fries. When I (rarely) eat fries, I want it to feel like a treat and a blissful experience and that's not Hat Creek. I have to give them kudos on having fresh buns, and quality toppings, and a clearly in house ground patty, and I think that's why, after time passes, I'll do their drive by again. But the flavor is just not there; it's missing something to make it a truly delicious burger. An open grill, perhaps, charcoal, or a dash of special seasoning or of special sauce, something. I don't understand the hype over the turkey burger. It was over cooked and dry. There was little to no taste. I added S&P then added one of there specialty sauces. Did not help the lack of flavor. I understand the turkey should be cooked. But over cooked, dry,hard and cool! Saving grace was the tater tots. My wife had a burger. Nothing to write home about or recommend. All they had back then was ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc. Went back in more recently and they had more sauce options than you could imagine...and they're all housemade mustards and special sauces. I've eaten here twice and it's pretty good. The fries are the very thin style, not very crispy, a little greasy for my taste, but not bad overall. The burger is pretty good, you can get jalepenos or grilled onions for free. Patty was pretty fresh seeming, soft, not super flavorful but pretty good. cherry lime drink was pretty good, very limey, would be great with gin, vodka or tequila. The service is a little slow but that's likely because they're making the burger right then. freshness seems to be their big selling point. I'd really rather have a players burger, and cover 3 is the best in the city, but hat creek will do well in a pinch. my friend said it's her favorite burger and she's in culinary school, so i guess that's cool. read more

Literally the WORST food I have tasted in a long time. My company ordered lunch from here and when it was brought back, nearly everyone's order was messed up. We also didn't get the 2 milkshakes that we had ordered! Even simple things like remembering to put the BBQ sauce and ranch sauce in the bags was forgotten! Seriously people, get it together. Words cannot explain how amazing the service that my friend and I received from Jacob and Wesley (I believe that was his name?) was. I tried to tip both of these gentleman multiple times for the exemplary service that they provided on $1 drink night, but both followed company policy and politely said that they could not accept, whether it be via credit card or via cash. Given that these guys are absolutely acting as bartenders, they deserve to be tipped accordingly. You can tip at Five Guys or Chipotle, so why not here? These guys definitely deserve it. read more

They have the grain burger back in stock . Woo! I got to try it and I have to say it is really good. It has lots of flavor which can sometimes be lacking in vegan burgers. It also didn't crumble apart!!! Which is honestly amazing for vegan burgers especially. It comes with pickles and mustard on the bun so you don't have to worry about asking for no mayo or whatever. And got to say those were some of the best pickles I have had. Now I understand why they sell them by the jar. The bun was also toasted which was super yummy. Really gives a new depth of flavor somehow. Lost a star just because I found a piece of fried chicken in my fry bag telling me they don't have dedicated vegan fryers which for me trace ingredients aren't a huge deal but is an easy thing they could add. Also all their special sauces are mayo based which again is fine, I can just use ketchup but would be an extra something that would make this place a home run. All that said it is amazing and definitely will come again. I guess this location's bathrooms use to be gross because it's all over the tip section on this page but since they have upgraded and it is super nice. Small but definitely not "gas station quality" and said previously. Only thing that would be nice if you could open the door without a handle since the sink and paper towel thing is hands free. Don't come hungry! The food is expensive, and you don't get much. 10$ for a handful of lettuce with a spoonful of bacon and a few wedges of avocado... it's an expensive snack. Nothing comes with fries, no sides for anything including kids food. The one attraction this place has aside from the milkshakes is the play ground parents who are the main clientele readily make the food sacrifice to use. It's cool. A little pricier than I feel is justified, considering the burgers are still fast food quality and not gourmet-whatever, just with the occasional touch like free grilled onions, but fine overall. The internal screen door is ridiculous. It's the classic "quirky" place cashing in on the suburban New Austinite that wants some kind of character but none of the grime of the old places. But it's got a playground and my wife likes the food better than Phil's a few blocks up the road, which I prefer. Getting into admittedly pretty territory, they inexplicably do not have any Austin Beerworks, Live Oak, or Hops and Grain beer available, which I feel like is a pretty drastic oversight. They're known quantities around town and you can get at least one brewery's stuff practically everywhere else with a liquor license. read more

Best fast burger in Austin, hands down (even better than in-and-out). P Terry's held that spot in my heart for years. But the burger patties on Hat Creek burgers are so much better, the sauces are delicious, they have sweet potato fries (GF) and good wine and beer. They also offer chicken flashers, which are kind of like chicken nuggets but actual chicken meat cut and fried in GF breading. If you haven't tried this place lately I whole heartedly recommend it. Excellent spot to bring kids as well. Good company that gives back to the community as well. UPDATE: this place is so underrated. Their food is delicious and quite clean for "fast food". I just tried their breakfast platter and it was delicious and huge for $5! They also do Tuesday half off burgers and $1 draft beers in Thursday's. Don't forget to try their special sauces too! Also I just want to acknowledge that the folks who work here are so happy and helpful. They must be treated well, and I understand the company does good work giving back to the community through food donations. Y'all if you haven't tried it, please do. They also didn't have mustard which is the only condiment by husband likes on his burgers. For the price - I was expecting much more. I relax, knowing contentment is coming soon, waiting.... She makes me wait. I knew she would. The hint of scent wafts, closing my eyes as my patience is tested. My resolve redoubles, even as my mind is drawing up the images of what lies ahead behind my eyelids. I hear her approach, leaning over towards me. Her hand extends. Salvation comes towards me. Shifting to a more secluded location, my nostrils flare at the potent assault they receive. Slowly, I caution no one in particular. Enjoy this. I cup the red and white checkered pattern, letting my hand explore it, feeling the firm suppleness beneath. An edge reveals itself, and my finger gently lifts it enjoying the warmth it brings. I bend my head down to tease, inhaling and letting my sense be engulfed. Sliding my hand down around the curves underneath I draw back the patterns revealing those perfectly rounded, agonizingly attractive buns. My instincts strain against every brain cell not letting my assault continue. Stopping, just for a minute, to admire the beauty, before I let my hands forcefully strip away any protection and let my mouth delight in what is before me. The sweet, fluffiness of buns. The juicy, just pink-in-the-middle bit of heaven. My jaw works, slowly, savoring each taste, forcing an excruciatingly measured pace that belies my desires inside. I've been intrigued by Hat Creek ever since they took over for Barfys (Arbys). Seems like every Sunday when I'm sitting outside at Ginnys, i forget to check them out. So today, instead of going to the usual, I drove through that 103939 gallon hat drive through. And frankly, I'm wavering between three and four. Three because eh, its a decent, whataburger type burger but four because they've got fries that seem like they actually came from a potato, free grilled onions and jalapenos, fresh veggies on the burger and (allegedly) veggie fed beef. Also the price is right. A small combo meal at $5. If you've got the choice between Mickey Ds or Sonic, check out Hat Creek. It's local (even though it doesnt look like it) and probably healthier than the others while still tasting like its oh so bad for you. read more

I'm cautious of abusing the "one hand vs other hand" formula, but right offhand, I can't think of another way of doing this Hat Creek review. So on one hand, I enjoyed the burger: I did the #1 Combo with cheddar for $7.89, and it was juicy, delicious, and mommy-bear sized, with perfectly melted cheese and plenty of "ooze factor," as Gary K. likes to say. The fries were decent enough and I like Diet Dr. Pepper. On the other hand, eating inside Hat Creek had all the charm of dining in a modern correctional facility. I'm all for efficient austerity in business, but not when the client feels like a guest at County. The combined sentence of grey metal chairs, the floor slab, and the waiting in lines for the cashier, the soda fountain, and the unisex bathroom really felt like the aftermath of a burger-bust gone bad. So I'll split the difference for now and use the drive-thru because I like supporting local dudes doing food I enjoy. The irony was seeing their colorful catering vehicles parked and sparkling outside their looking glass--hey, have that artist come in for a night and go nuts, what's the worst that could happen? It was obvious my single patty turkey burger was hand-formed due to the creative shape it took when presented to me wrapped in iceberg lettuce. How great to find another burger joint that honors those of us who choose not to eat gluten! The half a jar of mustard slathered on my meat reduced my excitement a bit for my choice. Even with the extra mustard (that I scraped off), it had a great flavor and was surprisingly juicy. My son had a "Big Hat" bacon cheese burger with just the bun. He has great disdain for onions and typically looks through his food to check it for tiny white squares of evilness, which he found, by the way, between the two meat patties. One little fleck of an onion gives him personal satisfaction and justification for continuing this obsessive task in the future. Onion fleck gone, he enjoyed the burger but mentioned the grease several times. Uh, bacon does come with grease, dude. Hubby's "Big Hat" pepper jack cheese burger disappeared as did his fries (and mine). I did manage to eat a few handfuls before they were gone. Just a note about the fries: thin cut with a tiny bit of crispness in a generous amount. We all enjoyed them and my son ate more than usual. This was an a-okay experience but I have bumped it up a star for the turkey burger/lettuce wrap option. It's a great use for iceberg lettuce. The owner, local entrepreneur, Drew Gressett, fancies an atmosphere of "fellowship" in his burger joints. Hat Creek does not convey that type of ambiance so he has missed the boat completely on this good idea. Let me first say that I love Arby's. I mean LOVE Arby's. My dream date would be Natalie Portman Taking me to Arby's and allowing me to choose any 5 items on the 5 for 5 menu, then we would head over to her place where we would dress up in her Star Wars stuff and get dirty. Unfortunately, my dream will no longer be realized with this location as it has closed down and has become Hat Creek Burger Co. I must say though it has been replaced by something just as delicious. I ordered the Big Hat Burger and wanted a big burger so I added 2 more patties. Little did I know that means I was about to consume a 4 patty burger. I sat down with the mystery brand "Rootbeer" I had selected as my beverage and began attempting to defeat the monster burger. One of the things I was not to happy about was the burntness. The meats ends were kinda hard because they were burnt and the buns attempt to become toasted seemed to have been over done. Overall I was able to complete the sandwich because although it had 4 patties on it they were 4 very skinny patties. I was also able to finish the fries which I could not help but feel a lack in the amount given to you. Overall the food was good. It would match Mighty Fines in my book. This is a review of the fries, which are to my _exact taste_. Ordering some place's fries for the first time is no less than a blind date. I take chances, so am used to disappointment: I've conducted countless courtesy dates for woeful waffle fries (complicated baggage), sickeningly seasoned fries (high maintenance, superficial), salaciously squishy ones (sorry, antique bed), and, most disappointing of all, bland & banal. The resulting low expectations left me totally unprepared for Hat Creek's lithe, up-to-no-good pile of salty, steamy starch clad in no more than a filmy twist of paper. So light, yet bountiful. For some reason, every time time I visit Hat Creek I am in a frantic state. Whether it's dealing with a fussy baby or a ton of family members trying to coordinate dinner - it's always nuts. Albeit always a coincidence, Hat Creek never fails on making every thing come together. And for a second, all is calm while we enjoy our burgers and fries. It could be due to their always accommodating and friendly staff or the speediness (but not too fast, like it had been sitting under a heat lamp) of which the food is prepared and delivered fresh. Nevertheless, every aspect of my collective experiences with Hat Creek have been enjoyable. My favorite has to be the fries - regular and sweet potato - with a myriad of their specialty sauces. I usually go for the grilled chicken sandwich and it's always a winner, but that Signature burger with the sauerkraut gets points for creativity for sure. However, if you're going for a burger, I suggest the more classic burger. Always juicy, always tasty. Plus, they have the good ice! For a quick bite or a rendezvous with friends and family (particularly those with rambunctious small humans) it's an all around great burger joint! read more

Hat Creek burgers are fine. The patties are thin-- on more than one occasion I could actually see light through them, they were so insubstantial. But you'll pay as much as you'd expect to pay for a decent and substantial burger. The breakfast tacos are decent, basic, nothing to write home about, but fairly large which is nice. Do yourself a favor and drive through instead of dining in. We dropped by to use our Groupon ($10 worth of food for $5) tonight... I came to the Arby's that used to be here once or twice, but it has been so long that I can't really remember what the interior was like. Regardless, I don't think Hat Creek has done much to improve it. It pretty much feels like the food court at Costco, sans churros. Slab floors, big open spaces (normally good, but see below) and very stark. Basically, nothing to ease the mind in this place - pretty uncomfortable... When we walked in, I was surprised to see that there were more people working here than dining, probably 8 or 9 guys in the kitchen. This would normally be a good thing, but all of them were standing around looking like they were at a casting call for Jersey Shore. No one said hello or welcomed us to Hat Creek when we walked in. Several guys must have been in a furious Words with Friends match on their phones, or they were texting their chicas. Pretty ridiculous. A nice wall behind the register would resolve this problem, or some management on site...An open kitchen really isn't an influencing factor at a fast food burger joint, is it? Once we decided between the two combo options (double meat or single), we stepped up to the counter and were greeted with a less than enthusiastic effort. Orders in, paid another five bucks for the two #1 combos (double meat burger, fries and a drink). We sat down in one of the booth areas and waited. (Note to management - that crevice between the seat and back pad does need to be cleaned once in a while. Yours obviously hasn't been cleaned since you opened - nasty...) The burgers took about 10 minutes to come out and were quite tasty. Not as good (IMO) as Elevation or Mighty Fine, but still up there. Meat patties are really small (maybe 2.5 or 3 ounces each), so get the double unless you are on the Twiggy diet plan. Slightly greasy, but not falling apart. Great taste, even though the patties are really thin and are probably machine formed somewhere else/possibly frozen. Fries were a bit overcooked but were good, although not world class. Overall, a good burger, but a shitty experience. Do yourself a favor and hit the drive thru to avoid the goon squad inside. I'm not really a burger guy, but when I decide to indulge in some greasy meat on a bun it better be good... it was not. My burger was cold, falling apart, and lacking in any real flavor. The fries were quite good and crispy and the only reason it gets more than 1 star. The place has the dirty cold feel of any run down chain like McDonald's or Burger King. Delicious burgers made fresh every day? My taste buds were already dancing with anticipation when I enjoyed my first bite of the Little Hat cheeseburger combo (Little Hat = one patty, Big Hat = two patties). There are two locations in Austin, and my boyfriend and I actually opted for the Burnet location with the strangely familiar giant neon hat sign... The burgers are a reasonable size, so I did not walk out of Hat Creek ready to take a seven hour meat nap--excellent! I think it would also be safe to say that Hat Creek's milkshakes bring all the boys to the yard. Delicious Blue Bell Ice Cream in Chocolate, Vanilla, and Cookies and Cream.
