Prices are cheap for a plate. 2 plates, 1soup, and 2 drinks were around $40. The dining area is clean, lots of seats inside and outside. The lobster bisque was tasty! I liked the stuffed eggplant. Hospital food has the reputation for being tasteless and boring, but this dining area at Queen's is much better than ordinary hospital food I came here for breakfast and lunch on multiple occasions as my mom was admitted, and I was pleasantly surprised. I got things such as pizza flatbreads (cheese, spinach, and mushrooms), garlic chicken, pastele stew, steak Caesar salad, Teri burger and fries, sweet potato fries, and of course standard breakfasts of egg, Portuguese sausage, and rice. Everything I ate was flavorful and good! I'd honestly come back here if I was in the area, just for the food . The workers were friendly, and I loved how even if you didn't want anything they were serving that day for meals, they have a grill on the side that always serves fries, garlic butter fries, sweet potato fries, burgers, grilled cheese, and even loco moco! I finished an EKG this morning and had time to run over to Harkness for a takeout breakfast, but sat down to sneak some spoonfuls before my pre-op exam. I I've when they are generous with Portuguese sausage that's a little charred and carmilized...very tasty. Too my surprise, the fried rice had chunks of breakfast sausage and portage sausages. You can just ask the serve for that alone besides bits of eggs. But of course, the eggs were fluffy and plentiful. The lady and cashier were friendly and helpful to me. The Harkness Dining Room at the Queens Medical Center has a wide variety of food options. It's very convenient if you're in the area. As there aren't many other food places within walking distances away from the hospital. Prices have increased over the years to cover cost and inflation, which is understandable. All of the staff I've encountered are very polite, friendly and helpful :) Things are clean, organized and fully stocked. You enter the food area on the left side, and when you're ready to pay, you wait in line by the registers on the right side. Utensils, napkins and condiments are located pass the registers and before the doors. During lunch time (12pm) it can get pretty busy. There are different bottled drinks (kombucha, smoothies, soda, coffee, water, teas, sports drinks, energy drinks), soups, produce, weighted salad bar, flat bread pizzas, packed sushi, pre-made sandwiches, packed salads, pre-made desserts, ice cream, snacks (cookies, marshmallow bar, protein bar, chips, pastries), entrees, breakfast foods in the morning (scrambled eggs, fried rice, spam, Portuguese sausage, corned beef, potatoes), grill short order/ made upon order items (fries, burgers), showcase specials (weekdays, until sold out), and more. The entrees and showcase specials menus are rotating and are posted towards the entrance exit of the dining room. For the grill short order/ made upon order items, you order at the register and pay. Then wait by the grill window on the side with your receipt. Recommended items: The fried rice available during breakfast time is super flavorful and delicious. Like an oasis in the middle of a dessert, the hospital dining room provides sustenance and a diversion for one's visit to the hospital. Most of the hospital visitor offerings are meh, and some are down right awful. The Harkness Dining Room is really not bad, and actually quite good. Take my latest foray into the world of hospital dining: I had roast pork with gravy over mash potato. No need for add-ons, just that and a bottle of ice tea. When I ordered it from the server, she said she guaranteed the meat was tender and tasty, and you know what? It was! The selections are decent, they have a salad bar, and the employees are pleasant. It's been a whirlwind since moving back home to Oahu. If you dine here, you either A) Work at Queen's. B) Are visiting a family member or friend in the hospital. C) Are curious to try every single eating establishment on yelp. :) I am part of Party B. I am grateful for Harkness, as I had to wait 7 hours (we were informed the procedure would take 2 hours, thus I stayed and waited). The menu changes daily and is posted at the entrance. Hot food options for the day included Korean chicken and pastele stew. There was a third option that I didn't commit to memory. I had the pastele stew that came with a side of white rice that was about $11. It was salty, savory, yummy (a little overly fatty for my liking but I removed the excess fat). I was a little disappointed that it didn't come with a side of fresh salad. They do have a salad bar which you can pay extra for. I appreciate the outdoor (and indoor) dining. We dined outside, which was nice to get fresh air and sunshine. There are umbrellas to provide shade and shield from rain. It was lovely being surrounded by tropical plants that are well taken care of. I found it quite cumbersome that there were no trays available, as I was pushing a wheelchair and the plate was burning my arm. A thoughtful cashier saw me struggle and overheard me searching for trays and provided me with a cardboard box. Mahalo nui! Tip: Harkness is on the 1st Floor (not Lobby). Let me start by saying the food directly from the dining room is awesome, hot and tasty is winners. And now they have carts being pushed by the nicest and most friendliest workers that go to the different floors and wings around breakfast and lunch time ringing their bell to alert you to their presence. Now the reason for only fours stars is that the food that comes from the cart that should be hot actually ends up room temperature or cold like the miso soup which was cold (but there are microwaves around, you just need to ask where). That being said I highly recommend things like the somen salad or the salmon lox bagel with cream cheese and capers which was really good. Also the carts sell drinks too. read more

Due to a family member becoming a patient at Queens, I had dined at the Harkness Dining Hall numerous times. It is a good idea to get here at or before 1130 because the lunch crowd starts at 1145 and the place really fills up. The salad bar looks terrific and I did enjoy my first meal here. I grabbed a tuna sandwich before noticing that the hot food line was offering pastele stew so I switched my lunch to the pastele stew. I thought it was delicious but the white cubes in the stew were not potatoes but pork fat. I went for breakfast one morning and had the fried rice with scrambled eggs, Portuguese sausage and pork links. I would not eat the breakfast here again. Some of the rice was so hard that I had to spit it out. The Portuguese sausage was tough, the eggs were soft scrambled and the pork links lacked some flavor. The last time I went for lunch I grabbed that tuna sandwich that I didn't buy the first time. It wasn't good, it was tasteless and I added a little more mayo because the tuna was pretty dry. So I am pretty much over it and will only return to buy beverages. read more

This hospital cafeteria is pretty close to my office so I check out it's daily specials online. They have some pretty good specials! I love the steak and potato salad and the taco salad. It's definitely not what you expect for hospital cafeteria food - really quite tasty! The prices aren't cheap but are in line with what you'd expect. They also have a salad bar (but not during COVID) and an assortment of grab and go items. I think the grill might be closed during COVID as well. You do need to get temperature checked before entering. It's a hospital, after all, but you gotta appreciate the precautions! read more

I can say that only if you're starving and have no other food choices does one come here. The breakfast was bad. My fried rice was dry (however they did add a lot of ingredients like the frozen veggies and chopped up sausage links), the Portuguese sausage is just sausage and you cannot mess up on that but the egg is the really bad egg that hotels use that come in big bags and are just fried up and scrambled into this hard yellow mounds of tasteless watery junk. There is no flavor to it and I am guessing because it's sold in a hospital so people with health restrictions can eat it and the rest can add seasonings. It was just tasteless and pretty bland even with seasoning put on after. The price for a small container is a bit over $5 so I guess no complaining but I say my peace. The only thing that had me excited was the coffee that they roast are from Starbucks. I am enjoying that because the rest went in the trash can! The staff works hard even to make this but I feel that some flavor can be put in this breakfast. I had the oatmeal before and it was decent but I felt like eggs and rice. Next time, I need to remember to make it myself at home and save my money. Another interesting fact is that they sell fresh produce at harkness cafeteria. Harkness Dining Room is located on the Queen's Medical Center property. Cafeteria can be accessed from the hospital as well as near the driveway on the side of the hospital building. My most recent visit to Harkness Dining Room was on a Saturday around lunch time. I had accessed the cafeteria through the driveway. I walked through the entrance and noticed tables with chairs on the left side. Another entrance door on the right side. More tables and chairs straight ahead. I walked in front of the second entrance door and turned left. Straight ahead were the registers as well as the food area. Approaching the food area I noticed the hot items on the right hand side, cold deli items in front, turning left in a U shape will be the cold beverages, fountain drinks, coffee, salad bar and soup station. I opted to get a small fountain drink. Not much to choose from the salad bar. Not interested in the soup. I settled for hot items. There was chicken, fish, rice, and broccoli in the hot section. I asked for rice, fish, and broccoli. After receiving my plate I made my way to the register and paid for my meal. Cash and credit card accepted here. I grabbed my plastic utensils from the condiment counter and proceeded to one of the tables. I noticed on each table there were extra napkin holders as well salt and pepper shakers. The cafeteria gets busy with the hospital employees on their lunch break as well as the general public. Cafeteria was pretty clean when I was there. Employees were friendly. Outside dining area is available as well. Rice and broccoli was cooked just right. Fish was overcooked a bit...to dry in my opinion. I usually go to Koi's Lunch Wagon just outside of Queen's Medical Center for lunch or bring a home lunch. I didn't have a home lunch and the line at Koi's was too long. So I went to Harkness cafe located at Queen's. I have been struggling a lot on trying to eat healthier. So I decided to get a lunch plate no rice just potatoes and zucchinis with lemongrass grilled pork. Along with chicken corn chowder. It was yummy. The pork was a little hard to chew on but otherwise ok. I didn't have a good dinner last night so today I sorta pigged out and ate everything. Lol. Tasted pretty good. Hospital food had been one of my worst enemies and greatest fears for many years. (The media, especially television, does not portray hospital food in an amicable way...) Thursday is your best bet - they have made to order omelet specials at breakfast special, which occasionally rotates with Eggs Benedict or Bananas Foster Waffles. Thursday is also when they feature a made to order pasta stir fry lunch special. Both the omelets and the stir-fries are big enough to share if you aren't a huge eater. They also have daily fresh made sushi and other showcase specials, including personal sized pizzas and occasionally panini. Also, the salad bar is extensive and includes items like poke and roasted vegetables plus composed salads. I go to the Queen's cafe nearly everyday. It's not terrible, considering hospital food is supposed to be bland. I was pleasantly surprised. I rated a 3 instead of 4 because the food isn't that as compared to a 4 star restaurant. The service is quite good. The lines move fast, and the staff are usually friendly. They have a large selection of dishes every day. I look forward to the lunch specials in the innovations section of the cafe near the open salad bar. They have a specialty item every lunch hour, but you have to go quickly otherwise they run out.
