Breakfast in Moanalua, Honolulu, Hawai'i... I was really excited about "the view", but it wasn't that great in my opinion. I guess it depends on what you prefer. Moanalua Valley is just okay to me... Anyway - the parking at Kaiser Permanente isn't the best. I wanted to turn around and leave, but I was stuck. There's nowhere to turn around! I thought: Well, I'm here... Let's just finish Plan A. Haha! I kept going around and around... lower and lower in the parking structure... I don't remember this. I guess I was here a long time ago for classes, and we parked in the Employee Parking Lot! Bottom line: $3 to park here for 3 hours. Sunrise Cafe is the cafeteria on the second floor of this hospital. For breakfast, I had a choice of Breakfast Burrito or Breakfast Special. I got the Breakfast Special and chose scrambled eggs, grilled veggies (for my starch), and bacon. I must not have had scrambled eggs in a while because they tasted great with ketchup! The grilled veggies were okay and the bacon was crispy, not oily, and delicious!! It was relatively quiet, very clean, spacious, and bright! The server and the cashier were friendly and welcoming! While waiting for my hubby's procedure to get done yesterday, I popped into the Sunrise Cafe to get a quick bite. The cafe is located on the 2nd floor of the hospital & there are signs that will point you in the right direction when you come out of the elevator. It was late afternoon, around 4:30PM when I got there & it was pretty much empty. I've been here a couple times but it's been awhile. They have a huge dining area that I'm sure gets filled up during the day when the majority of the staff are working. The cafe has great views of Moanalua Valley & Tripler Hospital. They serve a variety of foods for just about everyone's tastes. There are 2 hot entrees daily, one of which is vegetarian, a small salad bar, a hot food warmer with burgers & hot dogs, a cooler display that holds an assortment of freshly made sandwiches, & yummy desserts, healthy fruit cups, yogurt, bottled drinks, & other grab & go food. There's a beverage bar serving hot & cold items, and by the cashier, a chest freezer filled with ice cream. In the dining area, there is also an assortment of vending machines including one that had spam musubi. There were 2 ladies working, one a cashier & the other serving the hot entrees. I think I've seen them before. They've been working there a long time. Both nice & friendly, as well as efficient. Prices are very reasonable, you won't break your wallet. I had ordered only 3 items - a cheeseburger, sandwich, & dessert. The total came to only $13.40. CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH - premade in-house from the display case. ONO! Best chicken salad I've ever had or made. I've had this sandwich before & was glad they still made it. It had walnuts, cranberries, a hint of cream cheese, lettuce on whole wheat bread. The only thing about it was the lettuce was soggy but since they have to make a big batch ahead of time, & it sits for a couple of days, I'll give them that. It was still so good! 5* for sure CHEESEBURGER - I would rate this burger a 3*. Because it sits in the warmer for hours, the bun was wrinkly probably from the foil it was wrapped in. The burger itself is good sized - quarter lb on a hamburger bun with American cheese. It was a little on the dry side so I only ate half & saved the rest for later. But, you really can't beat the price of only $3.25 for a quarter lb cheeseburger, cheaper that McDonald's. HAULOLO - dessert - 5*, excellent! This is brought in from a vendor called Pomai Kulolo out of Kailua. It's a pudding with coconut/haupia pudding on top & a taro dessert on the bottom, which is kulolo. Thus the name of the dessert haulolo. Sunrise Cafe is a hidden gem. Good food, reasonably priced, a variety of items to choose from, friendly workers, spacious dining area with gorgeous views of the valley & mountains. It's worth a stop. read more

A run-of-the-mill hospital cafeteria with some surprisingly tasty food! I stopped by here for breakfast and lunch as I was working in the hospital and was pleasantly surprised by the offerings. It's cafeteria style with specials for the day, standard menu items like sandwiches and burgers, and a salad bar. Very friendly staff and good food. Cafe is inside hospital and for hospital food it's good and healthy. The portions are smaller than your average L&L plate but it is a more healthier serving. We got the teriyaki chicken and loco moco. The chicken was good and came with two pieces, your side of vegetables and starch. I wished they put more gravy on the loco moco but it was still pretty good. There are alot of seats in the cafe as well as vending machines on the sides. You can also enjoy the view. May get crowded at lunch as employees come there to eat as well. read more

we were sitting and waiting for the menu and the guy server said we had to wait for 45 minutes after making us wait for 15 min just for the menu. he was extremely rude and arrogant. Plus i never seen a single restaurant not accepting a card but only cash. Want to ask the owner: do you actually pay taxes for your business? Very fishy restaurant. read more

Food was great, menu is simple and straightforward. They do stagger order pickups for covid safety. Okinawa Pork bittermelon (has eggs) is very different than chinese style (black bean). Soba and sushi was flavorful and fish fresh. Tempura was not crunchy but crisp and fresh. No tempura sauce only katsu sauce provided. Came with my whole family once or twice a week around 2015 for a few months during my grandfather's hospital stay. We always enjoyed our time there, and the cook was very nice. The food was good, and they had a very pleasant staff. Most likely isn't the same today, but this place is special to me because it was a little solace in the middle of a crazy situation. read more

Look, it's not the Ritz, but the food is really excellent for hospital food, and for 'fast food', it is very nice as well. The large coffee urns pour Lion brand - no specialty coffees but regular house pour: very good. The scrambled eggs were much better than i would have thought - not rubbery as would be expected coming out of the steam - serving-dish: the croissant, although small was actually excellent. So, no complaint whatsoever and the price is very reasonable. It's a nice place to sit and wait for patients or appointments as well even between their serving hours. So, for those reasons, I am giving Sunrise Cafe five stars --- five stars for this category of restaurant! read more

The food is pretty good here, considering the entrees tend to be less salty and lower in fat than most fast food joints. There's usually "Local Fav", "Healthy Choice" & vegetarian selections that change daily, costing less than $7. If you don't plan on eating in the dining room & prefer a clam shell takeout container (vs. a plate), a 30¢ fee is added. There's also a "weigh & pay" salad bar, burgers (beef, cheese, veggie, crab-like), hot dogs & baked fries in a food warmer, assorted drinks & desserts. For breakfast they usually offer brioche and muffin sandwiches. I've never been there for breakfast so I don't know if they serve the usual eggs, meat & starch fare. The only thing I didn't like was the Spam musubi, probably because they used a "healthier" luncheon meat. This food service area is open 7 days a week, 6:30 - 10:00 for breakfast, 11:00 - 2:00 for lunch & 4:30 - 7:00 for dinner. The dining room is open 24 hours with access to water/ice dispensers, vending machines & microwave ovens (convenient for visitors of patients with extended stays). You don't have to be visiting a patient as a reason to try the food here. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes, enough time to park, get your food & leave. This hospital cafeteria has really reasonable prices. A mini plate (which is basically a regular sizes plate filled with 2 sides and an entree) is only $4.00 or you can opt out for a Healthy Choice meal for a little more than $5.00. Has a different array of stations: Salad Bar, Pastries (my favorite), drinks, Soup bar, etc. The staff is extremely helpful and nice. I like their Ice Cream machine which I thought was a nice touch. What I enjoy most about this cafe in Kaiser Moanalua Hospital is the views from the window seats. Lots of mountains and green trees. I have come here many times when family members were in the hospital for various procedures. The food? Well, it is hit or miss from the hot bar. A lot of times it is local favorites, but most times it is some sort of meat with gravy and brown rice. My favorite part of the food is the salad bar, which is charged by weight. They have gone healthier over the years so finding something to satisfy a sweet tooth is challenging. But, this cafe is a nice place to get away when the other choice is a waiting or hospital room. We have been in Honolulu for 11 days while a family member is in the hospital here. We have eaten at the Sunrise Cafe for either breakfast or lunch for 11 days, and eaten the other meals at different local restaurants, some local hole in the walls and some fancy restaurants and a few breweries. Surprisingly the Sunrise Cafe has consistently had better food than any of the other places we have eaten, that's saying a lot for cafeteria style food. They have 3 choices a day, a local favorite, a vegetarian option and something else. They also have a hot sandwich or wrap choice every day. I would Recommend eating here! read more

The cafe is pretty small, but the smells of the food does draw you in. Came here for breakfast, and it had some pretty good options that you serve yourself. All the food looked delicious, but some of the condiments for fruits and toppings were in interesting places. Fruits and toppings were in an area where you have to bend down to add them, which seems unsanitary because little kids can reach them. Not to mention there is no sneeze guard or coverings for any of the fruits or toppings. I had the oatmeal which was pretty decent and standard. No thrills about it. The only reason why I gave this place 2 stars is because they penny pinch. Usually at other places that serve oatmeal allow you to add toppings for free, or at least up to a certain number. But I added some toppings like granola and chopped almonds, and the cashier got angry because you're supposed to put the toppings/fruit in a separate container to weigh them, pay for both, and then add it to your oatmeal. There was no sign that said to have them separated anywhere. Another example of their penny pinching is that if you want fried rice, you add them to another separate container so they can weigh it and you pay it separately rather than a set price like everything else. After this experience, probably would drive down the road to some diner or restaurant rather than eating here. They might have terrific food, but with the penny pinching you might want to explore different options. read more

First time here and cafeteria staff (especially the older Filipino lady worked at the cashier) was extremely rude. Went into the cafe to grab some coffee. I seen a coffee vending machine, which I thought was pretty cool so I went for that. I looked around for a cover and some cream & sugar but it was no where to be found. I asked a staff where I can get a lid for my coffee and she directed to the other side of the room. There I seen all the necessities for my coffee. As I began to walk out, that rude lady walked towards me and stared me down. Right away I told her I got my coffee at the vending machine and that I already paid for it. She then asked "so what did u get here!?" I said "just cream and sugar, did you want me to pay for it????" I thought she'd say no it's ok but she said in a stinky voice "YES! It's $0.50 and I'm already giving you a discount. That coffee vending machine is NOT ours and its separate so you are not to grab things for your coffee here." I recently had the misfortune of being in the the Kaiser Moanalua Hospital for two weeks. Myself and my family purchased food from the Sunrise Cafe. How impressed we all were with the quality and flavor of the food. We especially loved the beef stew dishes we had. In fact, my wife is now trying to find out what the secret to the recipe is. Never thought we would discover one of the best dishes we have ever had (and we dine out alot) at a hospital. Kudos to the Chef. read more
