Unlike Geno Smith and all the mid hawks fans who think hes good, Hard8 is better then mid. 3.5 Stars. From the parking lot, the BBQ smells let you know you're in for a treat. Line out the door that moved at a decent speed, it was fun to watch people in front of you order and then take your turn. The chicken was surprisingly good amongst the normal BBQ selections (none of the norms stood out great but certainly was enjoyed). The actual service, the cooks, the cashier, the crew in the dining room are 4+ stars no doubt, very friendly, accommodating and just overall gave a great vibe. While visiting family in Dallas, my cousin brought me to Hard Eight BBQ. This was my first experience at a real bbq joint. Walking in you pass the selection of meats on the grill and then you are able to choose your sides. I chose ribs, jalapeño poppers, jalapeño sausage, mac and cheese and sweet potato fries. The service was great and the ambiance definitely gave authentic bbq restaurant. The dining area was way too cold and I found that my meat got cold before I could enjoy it. You won't leave hungry, that's a promise. All the locals recommended this place, so I know I had to make a visit. Meats here are sold by the pound (or half). They only list a few sides outside, but it doesn't stop there. They have a multitude of different side options inside (macaroni and cheese, salad, French fries, etc.). I was able to enjoy the pulled pork and ribs. Both meats were delicious. The pulled pork was juicy, but the ribs required a bit of their sauce. Loved the bbq! It was really cool watching the meat grill outdoor and we ordered way more than we could finish. Everything looked heavenly for a meat lover! This place was a pleasant surprise. There was a guy outside directing patrons on how to go about ordering. He was polite and patient. There's a grill out in front with different meats, corn, potatoes, etc. I decided on brisket and ribs. They weighed my tray and off I went. Let me start by saying that my BBQ standard has been set high for many years now by my heavenly visit to Freedman's (RIP) in Austin Texas. That standard was not even close to being met at Hard Eight. I was excited to try Hard Eight after several locals recommended it. The long line to get in should have been a warning to me. Long lines to me doesn't always mean quality, but simply an overly hyped tourist trap. Very few places live up to this hype and often the large crowds makes it extremely hard to serve consistent great food. This was the case, at least for me and for the person who sat next to me. I decided to try multiple items. lets rank them from best to worst not including sides and dessert which were all just OK. #1 - By far the best item on the plate was the sausage. I got the regular, but they also offer a jalapeño version as well. It was excellent and I could eat that all day. #2 - Right behind the sausage was the tasty chicken popper. #3 - A large drop to the sirloin. I had 2 slices. One slice had a pink center but the outer ring and the entire second piece was a horrible dry medium well with almost no flavor. #4 - Smoked bologna. Not bad, but not something I would order again. Rather have had more of the sausage or poppers. #5 - Ribs. The meat came right off the bone with a simple bite, but that is where the good ends. Both ribs were almost bone dry. They had a slight smoke flavor which was nice, but the rub was flavorless and I had to drench them in sauce. #6 - Brisket. How do you get brisket this wrong in TEXAS. Part of it is my fault. A fresh brisket came out just as I arrived at the cutting station. They wrap their brisket in foil. I know there is a gret debate between foil or butcher paper. Put me in the butcher paper category because foil can ruin the bark and that is exactly what happened to this brisket. When he unwrapped it the whole bark just slid off. What was left looked like pulled brisket. No clean perfect slices of brisket were headed my way, so I said please cut me a section with bark. That was a mistake,. He preceded to cut me the driest section of an already clearly overcooked brisket. In addition to being dry, it was off the radar salty. I LOVE salt. In fact my GF always thinks I iuse too much salt. And this brisket was too salty for even me. Why 3 stars instead of 1? The sausage raised it a star. The coolness of the place raised it another. If I only ate the brisket. Definitely 1 star. Maybe i got a bad batch of almost everything and after all many on here give it great reviews including some friends who went two nights ago. But let's be honest, probably 90% of the 5 star reviews are from people who think great BBQ is Sonny's or uncle Bob's weber in the backyard. These people have not known the delight of Freedman's or places like it. It is tough to live in a world where Freedman's no longer exists, but BBQ like this has a line out the door. We truly are living in the end times. It is a Hard NO for Hard Eight. read more

Hard Eight is a very unique BBQ restaurant. You start outside in a covered area and order your meats right from the pit. It was a bit smoky, but also a magical experience. I ended up trying several different things. Then you go inside and there is a cold bar with packaged sides like coleslaw, and then a hot bar with packaged sides like the corn. Finally you visit the cashier to see what the damage is. I thought the food was excellent. I got brisket, jalapeno sausage, and pulled pork. I've had other pit BBQ like Salt Lick, and compared to that I would say this meat has less smoke flavor. It is still delicious, but just a slightly different style from low and slow with hardwood using an offset smoker. For my sides, I got the coleslaw and the jalapeno corn. Both were delicious. Hard Eight is definitely a place that would be in my rotation if I lived closer, and I look forward to trying it again next time I'm in the Dallas area. read more

On this trip to the Dallas area, we made it to Hard Eight three times. If you want excellent Texas pit BBQ, this is where you should go. Service is cafeteria-style and you choose the meats when you get to the pit master. Your sides are chosen on the way to the cashier. We went here with family over the weekend as we were in the area. We liked how big the place is, and how many food options were offered. We went right when they opened at 10:30am and we didn't have to wait in line. We ordered brisket, sausage, a ribeye, corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, and some slices of white and wheat bread. We may have over-ordered as we were too full to try the sweet potatoes. The brisket and sausage were cooked to perfection. Neither was too dry and we appreciated the sauce dispensers which made it easy to get more. The ribeye was also tasty and cooked to how we wanted it. When served, the portion size seemed to be on the smaller end, and the included side was small as well. The flavors are on point but not sure if it was worth the price of $20+tax. The corn on the cob was good but it wasn't salted or buttered. I wish they would have put more thought into their corn but it tasted plain. The corn wasn't sweet; I think an opportunity was missed here. I enjoyed their free beans soup that's added to fat rendering and jalapeños. That said, the soup is a bit spicy but it was good to include fiber in our meal. We sat outside and it wasn't too loud. We saw that they have patio heaters and fans they could turn on if needed. Don't get the steak. Go for the Disney like line of anticipation. Most of the meats are priced at the same price per lb, and you don't need to go at set amts (like 1/4, 1/2), just point and say I want a little or a lot. Is this the best bbq in Dallas? I have to say this is an experience. We got to order straight from the grill. That made it easy to order instead of looking at a menu because the meats are laid out right before you: the ribs, brisket, jalapeno sausages, turkey breast, ham, beef bologna, chicken, and shrimp popper ( I got both) and the baked potato. I order most of the meats, the baked potato, okra, and potato salad. I know some of you would say why order the baked potato and potato salad. Well, because they are each made differently. Plus, I'm a sampler when it comes to dining at places I've never been, and taking a friend makes it even easier to try out the whole menu. So, once you order your meats, you go inside and order your sides. It's the same concept as you order your meat; the sides are laid before you. Also, the BBQ sauce is on the side; some people like sauce on their BBQ, and others don't. Now, I go between adding sauce and not. This time, I did both, but mainly without because the meat had such a flavor that my tastebuds were loving; I didnt want to take away from the taste. My friend order drinks from the bar, which is a full bar. We decided to sit communal style at one of the long tables, talking to our neighbors while music, (a nice playlist) played in the background.
