There was a point in time where Gold Spoon was the hottest Korean restaurant in Carrollton and certainly one of the most revered in the state of Texas. It was the epitome of small but mighty, serving up classic high quality Korean dishes in what felt like a pocha style establishment with excellent service. Now that word has gotten out, there are numerous visitors from all over and they've made some slight adjustments that have taken it a notch down for me and others. This includes the hiking of prices (#1) and the introduction of non-Korean staff to appease many non-Korean patrons. The latter has had more mishaps than the previous wait staff, but the mistakes are quickly remedied with swift adjustments. They even updated their awning with a much bolder "금수저" (golden spoon) awning. Food wise, it also feels like there has been a change as well. The soondubu went up a solid $3 and the mandoo fillings have been skimpy as of late. I also feel the banchan has been more limited than the past with only a handful of dishes than the variety from before. I also wish they kept their old late night hours before as well, but that's only reserved for Friday and Saturday. Went with a friend for the first time for lunch on a weekday. Parking super easy. Restaurant not crowded. Service was friendly, helpful, and attentive. It's a cute place with a nice casual vibe. Comfortable seating. Food was excellent. This place is now one of my top 2 fave Korean places in DFW. Their banchan selection was the best. We also ordered soft tofu soup with seafood (generous amounts of both and a slight kick, not too spicy at all) - a great comfort dish, bulgogi japchae - excellent flavors - tons of shitake mushrooms - would've like a a tad more beef, and the seafood pancake which was perfectly crispy and tasty. Food: Ordered the Beef Short Rib and Soon Tofu soups, both of which were amazing--the Beef Short Rib had a clean, light, rich flavor and was adequately salted, while the Soon Tofu had deeper flavors that were well balanced and kind of umami. Situated in a revamped KFC location, Gold Spoon is small but mighty-- we were surprised how the tiny kitchen could cook for all the tables (and handle washing so many plates). It was solid meal in a casual setting :) ** Chive pancake-- really liked this one! Crispy edges with a hot almost gooey interior. The chives add a little brightness and almost sweetness. I didn't even need the dipping sauce, which MT said just tasted like soy sauce. ** Boiled sliced pork / bossam-- the medium size is big enough to share for two and beautifully presented. Wrap a slice up in lettuce, add some of the soybean sauce and kimchi or veggies, and you got yourself a delicious bite! I'm not a bossam expert, but this was really tender for lean pork. There's a strip of fat/skin that makes it melt-in-your mouth, but it still tender even if you separate that part off. ** LA short ribs / kalbi-- marinated well and flavorful. I thought it was a little too salty, and MT thought it was a little too glazed/sweet. The meat quality was good but not LA level. Tasty nonetheless! Service was friendly and helpful, coming often to replace the water pitcher or ask if we wanted refills for the side dishes. Come earlier or make a reservation, since the space is small. I'm always on the look out for some good Korean food, and this spot was a hit! The interior is small and cozy, and there was no wait on a Sunday during lunchtime. The seafood scallion pancake was a must, and I will say that I've had better seafood pancakes at other Korean spots, but this was still solid (I'd give it a 4 out of 5-the batter was slightly slightly underdone in my opinion.) The banchan was fresh and flavorful, and there are free refills on everything besides the tofu. The beef intestine soup was so delicious! I haven't had hearty Korean soup in a while, so this was perfect on a cooler day. There was a good amount of intestines and tripe, and I loved that it was kept hot and bubbling on the gas burner. The flavor was great, and it was the perfect amount of spiciness to enhance all the meaty flavors of the soup. (Also a 4 out of 5 for the dish--I thought it was just missing something that I couldn't put my finger on.) I do think it was a bit on the pricier end too, with tax and tip, those two items ended up being about $100. But I will say the experience was great :) read more

I have been craving bibimbap for a month and finally decided to find a korean restaurant near by. We walked into a space that looked to have previously been used as a fast food restaurant and was seated. They provided water, and all the ute sils required already at the booth. For food, I got bibimbap and my partner ordered the Galbi, and we got the seafood pancake to share. When they started bringing out the sides, we took a bite of the kimchi and immediately knew, this was going to be excellent. The food was fantastic, service immaculate. We ordered the spicy cold noodles, beef galbi, and the seafood pancake, and every single dish hit so hard The spicy cold noodles were refreshing, perfectly chewy, and had that addictive balance of sweet, tangy, and spicy that keeps you going back for another bite. It honestly reminded me of the naengmyeon I had in Korea and the beef galbi was incredibly tender and flavorful, grilled perfectly with that smoky, slightly sweet marinade. I ate at Gold Spoon recently and was very pleased. The ambiance is clean and decor is nice. The dining area is small but did not feel cramped. I ordered the beef bulgogi and asked them to make it spicy. They served banchan first, as is expected. The small dishes were good, but not exceptional, although I particularly enjoyed pickled peppers (top left dish in my picture). The bulgogi was served hot and fresh, and was full of flavor. That flavor became increasingly spicy (per my request) as I ate. I was not disappointed. The service was quick, efficient, and polite. No issues whatsoever. Gold Spoon didn't disappoint but it did not stand much above other Korean spots. I'll need to visit again to get a better sense of what makes them standout. read more

This place can be a little pricey but the food is good and the portions are large. We got the budae jjigae, seafood pajeon, and grilled pork belly. The army stew came in a large pot and was boiled on a portable stove at the table. It was incredibly filling, spicy, and flavorful. It comes with two types of noodles, rice cakes, sausage, spam, tofu, and some vegetables--very hearty! The samgyeopsal came out sizzling and went very well with the sauce they prepared. The seafood pancake was thick, but still crispy on the edges. They also gave lots of banchan and were very generous with refilling. Gold Spoon is my new favorite Korean restaurant! We arrived around 6pm on a Thursday and were greeted by the host and seated very quickly. When we arrived, there were not a lot of people yet but everyone arrived later. The side dishes came out quickly after we were seated and they were delicious. My favorite side dishes were the potato and the fish cakes! This place has the best side dishes in DFW. We ordered the Beef Soft Tofu Soup and the Bibimbap. All the portions were great for the price we paid. They were very generous with their portions and the Bibimbap was very large. The Beef Soft Tofu Soup came with the Korean purple rice but it was slightly salty for my liking. Eating it with rice takes away some of the saltiness. The servers were very attentive and gave us a second round of side dishes. To finish our meal, we were given the cinnamon drink as a dessert. We were seated promptly with a smile and the order was taken. The host offered helpful suggestions with our order as well. This restaurant is well known for their hot pots and the booths have burners for family style eating. Service was really quick with the salads / small eats arriving first. Each of the small bowls were unique in flavor and tasted amazing. You can ask for refills and they are provided with a smile. The dumplings and Bulgogi with rice were excellent. The Bulgogi is definitely spicy but it hit the right spot where you wanted to continue eating more. Be cautious when you place your order and specify spice levels if you cannot handle the heat.
