What a hidden gem. I'm not sure why the place is rated relatively low. Food was delicious, staff attentive, portions great. I love the statues that add to their decor. You are greeted by a big sumo wrestler statue sitting on the counter. That type of decor is throughout the restaurant. I just wish I could take one of them little hefty boys home with me! We did the all you could eat for $35. I do like that they had different price options for the all you can eat. However I came with my 2 year old as well. French fries were not on the menu, which I was surprised most Asian spots do have french fries for the kids. I also have an extremely picky eater. So After our meal I had to go get him dinner as well. Being that we were out of town. Our server was nice, and attentive. I'd go back. I wasn't a fan of the sauce for the beef bulgogi, but really enjoyed the spring rolls! read more

Exceptional in every way! This is our 3rd hibachi experience here and all have been great. The soup and salad are both perfect. I've had the chicken every time and it's always tender and the sauce it's cooked in is amazing. Wife has done filet all 3 times and been super happy every time. Service is adequate, nobody seems in a hurry which is fine with us. Definitely the best hibachi we've had in this area read more

I'd you'd like to pay an 18% MANDATORY TIP, in order to pay for their makeover, this is your place. Food is just okay, staff is just okay, decor is just ok. 3 "just ok's" aren't enough to compensate for an 18% price increase though mandatory tipping. If they're willing to force you to tip, where else are they skimping or cutting corners to maximize their profit? I and my office colleagues won't be back. read more

Still great sushi and excellent customer service! Tonight, I went with the following menu: Yellowtail, eel, fatty tuna, squid, and some dragon and super crunch rolls. We also ordered some spicy tuna rolls, and a spicy salmon roll as well as 3 California rolls. The Cali rolls aren't my preference, but for people who "don't like sushi", it seems to be the go-to staple. Everyone that ate them loved them. The super crunch and the dragon rolls were great- the squid had a nice pop and was scored wonderfully to accept that extra soy sauce. The eel was superb- always will be and always has been my favorite. So delicious- and that melt in your mouth feeling is sublime! The yellowtail was surprisingly melt in your mouth good too! Wow. It was topped with those freshly chopped green onions and they gave it a great, fresh, springtime flit to the flavor. The toro was so thick, yet so easy to eat, and had an excellently fresh flavor all on its own. I was very happy that it was not frozen in any way when I ate it. The staff here are always friendly and the retired sushi chef, who's been working here for the past 6 years has NEVER disappointed me. His background in Korean dishes as well as his knowledge of sushi shine and he always brings his satisfied personality into the conversation. I just learned he prefers houses to apartments and that he moved here from New York in 1993! Wow! I will always go back to Happy Sumo because I not only know the people, but I know their attention to detail in food quality is genuinely high end. I'm not sure why HS has a 3-star rating, but it has to be based on unsubstantiated claims or really specific personal preferences.... It's good sushi. Please visit and say hi the the sushi chef! If your going to eat sushi, great but if you there for the Hibachi your going to be disappointed because I absolutely was! We sat at a table, not the grill, we ordered shrimp and Chicken Hibachi and steak and Chicken Hibachi. The steak had no flavor was over cooked and tasted as if the meat was sour. My shrimp was over cooked, super chewy, rice was mushy, and i had to pay 2 dollars extra for fried rice, which should come with the meal, veggies all over cooked and our food was cold when it got to the table. The sever was nice but not attentive. The bill came and the auto added 18 percent to my bill for a Tip. I believe I should get to choose how much tip money I leave based on the service I get, it should be my choice. Our bill was 82 dollars for 2 Hibachi dinners 2 drinks, one California roll, which was the only thing we ate and was decent. I didn't complain because I didn't want to make a scene, but the server did notice we didn't eat any of our food, I didn't say anything I just packed our left overs for my dogs and left. After all we did pay almost 100 bucks for the food so something should enjoy it. read more

Went here by accident. A friend had suggested a place in same plaza but I didn't see the recommended place till after I had sat down and ordered. Got Tempura and an order of Freshwater eel nigiri. The tempura comes with miso soup and lettuce salad. The tempura order was ok. The dipping sauce did not have shaved daikon on the side for me to add. The wait staff did not come back after they delivered the food, so I couldn't ask for it. The eel was flaky and falling off the rice. The miso soup kept separating. The salad was basically just lettuce with dressing poured on it. It was noon and there was only one other table occupied. No one els came in while I was there. There is a teppanyaki area on two sides of the restaurant but neither side was occupied. I should have tried to find the place I had originally thought of going to. I did end up finding it and got my dessert there. They automatically add 18% gratuity. read more

Food was good but no real show with the hibachi, he just cooked. The food was ok not great or bad. They give you a crap ton of fried rice which is all that it is, rice with one egg for 8 portions. The most prominent flavor was oil for the cooked food. The salad while small was crisp cold and the dressing flavorful. The service from the waitress was slow and she disappeared for extended periods of time to the point our cook even mentioned it without being prompted. read more

I'm usually not the kind of person that goes "crazy for Sushi", but Happy Sumo is slowly making me a Sushi feen ! I've had take out from them before but this was the first time I've actually dine in and there were a few concerns. Me and my wife was seated and it took a while for us to be greeted to order (maybe 8-10mins). Although, we used that extra time to explore the menu in depth and we decided to go with that dinner special (see pics for more information) My wife ordered the Volcano Church roll paired with a California roll and a sweet tea. I ended up getting the Jalapeño roll with a side of fried rice. Again it took about another 10mins to get the food. But once it finally came smh it was on and popping ! Both the Volcano and Jalapeño roll was really tasted and had a nice kick to it. The rice was a tad bit bland but once I topped it with yum yum sauce it was delicious. We also had salad with ginger dressing and soup and that was great too. Overall the food was A1 but the service is what caused me to give them 2 stars. It was a Friday night and super busy so I can imagine that's why service was behind. But outside of that I would recommend it to any regular or newer sushi lovers ! read more

Unfortunately they have a new owner and with that: New menus Much higher prices Smaller portions and To top it off: 18% gratitude for parties of 1 or more. Not sure we are going back. This used to be our go-to for good, reasonably priced sushi, but now it feels like you're paying for more than it's worth $52 for some sushi and a roll with two waters. read more

We have been coming to Happy Sumo for the last 25+ years. It was our go-to for sushi or hibochi. After the renovation it's gone way down hill as far as we are concerned. The sushi isn't as good, the prices have gone thru the roof, no more separate sushi room and it's too loud. You sit right near the door and get a cold breeze every time someone opens the door in the winter. They automatically include the tip so they took that away too. It's a shame but we won't be back. read more

Happy Sumo is one of many Japanese hibachi restaurants in the area. They offer hibachi and sushi items on the menu. They have a large restaurant layout with a different seating arrangements. The hibachi grills are at the center of most the tables. You sit around them as is tradition at most hibachi establishments. They will give you a decent show at lunch time. Nothing too fancy. The hibachi chef will cook all the usuals and provide you with dipping sauces of your choice. It can get a bit pricey but that sort of comes with eating hibachi almost anywhere these days. Food wise, it was okay. Most hibachi restaurants if you order any of the basics like the fried rice, the ginger salad, the hibachi steak, it's going to end up tasting about the same. Overall it still tasted pretty good. Hard not to to be honest when it comes to hibachi. I guess left Happy Sumo happy or at least satisfied. read more

My husband and I came here for a nice midday date. The service was attentive but not overbearing. Husband got a combo and I ordered two rolls. Everything was made fresh and delivered as soon as the chef was done. The chef also kindly gave us a small free tempura Kani and it was delicious (melted in our mouths). We did not feel rushed and the restaurant was quiet and clean. Really a much enjoyed lunch in an unassuming strip mall location. read more

I always order take out here. The sushi is actually good. However, there's a strong, stale smell, almost like mildew in the carpet that hits your nose as soon as you walk in the door. The staff is never engaging and my last visit is what did it for me. I walked in and the attendant behind the desk never once looked up to make eye contact with me. I asked her for a menu and she pointed to the side without looking up. The menu I was reading had no prices so when I asked the price of a specific roll she handed me a takeout menu with prices, still never looking up. She walked back and forth past me several times and never asked if I was ready to order. I just left. Order takeout if you want but if it's good service you want this probably isn't your place. read more

I ordered the vegetable spring rolls , sea weed salad and sushi . Seaweed salad was fine , vegetable spring rolls were ok the sauce is dressed on the spring rolls I prefer to have them dry and dip them in sauce. I did have a "japanese sprite" which was a $4 strawberry Ramuné. The sushi were soft and lost its shape while picking them up with chop sticks . I like my sushi to be firm . Sushi was bland . Me , my brother and daughter went to the restaurant and our check had an automatic 18% gratuity add to my check ....the waitress didn't wait on us during our meal if we needed refill on drinks or if we needed anything .. I cannot understand why their rating is low.. We celebrated a birthday there tonight and it was fantastic! They said they were short handed but our service was prompt, courteous and we never lacked for anything. The Chef put on a great show. We decided to dine in for once and everything was going great until my boyfriend noticed a fly on his piece of sushi when we told the lady at the front she just started laughing and he tried to look past it and still wanted to come here but I kept saying no.. now time to pay and THEY TIP THEMSELVES 18% for a party for 2 like what the hell I was going to tip her good too when I asked her she said 'yes I tip myself' you don't do that. Ordered steak and shrimp hibachi (2 separate meals) and some sushi to go, and everything tasted old or off. The shrimp had a mealy taste to it, and the steak was dry. The fried rice had a weird aftertaste, and all of the sushi tasted fishy. The best part of the entire experience was seeing the menu added to our bags and reading "To go orders are non-refundable" on the front. Not sure if there's new ownership or something, but if you order from here for to go, be confident or beware! read more

My boyfriend and I came in on Christmas Eve. We understood they were gonna be a little busier than usual because this place was literally one of the very few restaurants open past 6pm. We stood and waited for nearly 15 min to be at least acknowledged but we were never acknowledged. 3 people behind the counter and no one said anything to us. Granted, they were quickly trying to help a huge party ahead of us which they sat, then were helping the 2 ladies in front. My issue was that we weren't acknowledged at all. Maybe because we were black? Maybe because the larger group was giving them issues? I wasn't sure.... but we left after standing there with no acknowledgement for 15 min. I work in retail services and we ALWAYS acknowledge any customers who walk up, no matter how busy we are. ‍ I may try this place again, maybe not, who knows. My daughter and I went here for lunch. The people were nice. Yes, we got a lunch special but the portion was very small. The rice was very good. The rest was trash! No flavor, the teriyaki was light brown so it just gave off the "something must be wrong" vibes. Also, the sauces tasted like mayonnaise The steak was tender but lacked flavor. The service is trash, very terrible. We waited nearly an hour before they started cooking. They were also short staffed and decided to cook my party of two's food on another grill with a larger party that sat at another table. This party came in after us and the cook went directly to them instead of cooking for us. The whole point of hibachi is the cook performing & cooking in front of you and they cheated us out of the experience. They definitely lost us as customers, I do not recommend and don't plan to visit again. read more

Food is very well priced properly, as well as the quality is very well nice. I attended for a lunch special for their sushi in which I ordered a spicy tuna roll. Upon eating about half of the roll I noticed a fly was dead on ONE of the sushi pieces, not the whole roll. I notified the manager and she removed the roll. I explained to her I no longer want that one roll as I had eaten only 1-2 pieces of the roll and I wouldn't mind paying for the rest of my lunch. Upon paying for my check I noticed that there was a gratuity tip for $6 which was the price of the roll. When you walk in the establishment you'll notice for HIBACHI ONLY that parties of 5+ will be charged a gratuity tip. For sushi there is nothing stating this. I explained to the manager that I was a party of 2 and that there's nothing on either the front counter or menu that states a gratuity tip will be added for parties of 2+ for sushi. She replied that parties of 1+ will be charged a gratuity tip. I avoided further confrontation and made the payment. I would be mindful of the "gratuity tip" you may be charged here. For take out it's a great establishment, however double check exactly what you're being charged for before placing your order. read more
