Our second time eating here - and it still lives up. Among a growing list of katsu places (gotta catch em all), Kanpeki still makes a good meal! Nestled in the Johns Creek Regal plaza, the restaurant is small and unassuming, but has a good atmosphere; the kitchen is visible in the corner and the booths offer decent privacy. Bathrooms are single stall but large inside, manual sink and paper towels available. Only downside is the floor was quite slippery walking around so be careful. They now have a new menu with curry udon featured, where you will get a bowl of curry udon with tofu skin and ground pork, and also any of their various katsu options on the side. Their curry sauce is solid, decently flavourful, and pairs quite well with the katsu and either udon or rice. The cabbage salad with black sesame sauce that comes with each meal is a favourite! Tonkatsu has good meatiness to it, we have not tried the highest tier fattiest katsu. Cheese katsu has excellent cheese pull and also has a decent amount of pork to back it up as well. Chicken wings have a nice soysauce/black pepper coating but the meat is a little plain otherwise. Food overall comes out quite quickly and has always been fresh. Service is excellent, staff are very attentive and even with a fairly full restaurant, we felt they came by quite often and quickly. *MOST AUTHENTIC KATSU YOU'LL GET* This is the second time i've tried this place and it did not disappoint. The curry is so flavorful and the katsu was tender and juicy. I will say i liked the chicken thigh katsu more. It didn't feel too tiring when eating it. Compared to the pork katsu but that's just my preference. Both dishes were about $19-20 a plate and it came with the choice of a cabbage salad or potato salad. We tried both and I liked the potato salad more. The sauce one the cabbage salad was a sesame dressing it was on the creamer side. On the table you're served with matcha salt, Japanese chili oil, and a spicy seasoning for curry. I would definitely recommend trying the matcha salt as well as the curry seasoning if you want a small kick!! The service was great! They checked on you regularly and there's also a button to call for service. And all the workers (even the ones in the kitchen) greet you when you walk in! Inside had tables and booths. Very authentic and tasty, one of my top tonkatsu places now! The interior is casual, comfortable, and spacious. I got the katsu don because I like my rice to have the soy and eggy flavor added, and it was really savory and filling. The crust is nicely crispy without being too thick, and the pork itself was soft and juicy. The premium tonkatsu looked super tender and juicy. The unlimited cabbage salad is a nice addition but I didn't feel like I needed it. I'd definitely choose this spot over others whenever I want tonkatsu in the future! read more

It was around 8 PM on a Thursday night, and the place was pretty empty. There were only two occupied tables including us. The service was simple but friendly. Since it's a tonkatsu place, most of what we ordered was fried: - Mentai Cheese Stick: It was okay. I mostly tasted the cheese rather than the cod roe, and it was a bit salty. - Chicken Katsu - Shrimp Katsu - Pork Katsu Because most of our order consisted of katsu dishes, the flavors started to blend together a bit. There wasn't a huge difference in taste between the chicken and pork katsu. The restaurant itself is clean and has separate booth seating, which gives a nice sense of privacy. The food was good, but not quite as impressive as I hoped for from a tonkatsu-focused restaurant. Quality-wise, it felt more like a high-quality fast food chain rather than a traditional Japanese restaurant specializing in tonkatsu. This is the place my family enjoys to come to when we re craving some Tonkatsu and it never disappoints. The Karaage is also one of my favorites. This was a really random on the whim selection and I can't say it was worthwhile. I ordered the tonkatsu combo $19 (includes rice, miso soup, and cabbage salad). The batter on the pork was light and crispy due to the panko. The pork itself was on the fattier side making for a pretty heavy dish. I did not care for the cabbage salad dressing nor the sauces the accompanied the dish. I tried a different sauce that came with the curry and felt it better complemented the meat. The meal wasn't bad but also nothing to write home about. It was so heavy and even with different combinations it all felt like the same bite/one note. Service was almost nonexistent. I had to ask for utensils and napkins twice. When orders came out, foods were not properly mentioned so huge mix up in food. No one came to check up on us after the food came. Plenty of parking in plaza where it's located. They have a mix of booths and tables with a call button at each. The menu is pretty straight forward, they offer different types of tonkatsu in a variety of sets. Each table also has a container for chili oil (not spicy, but more garlic flavored. Reminded me of the chili crisp), matcha salt, and spicy red pepper for the curry. We got: - shrimp head appetizer ($4) for like 12 pieces of fried shrimp heads. I love fried shrimp heads so this was an easy decision - chicken thigh tonkatsu set with extra side of curry: the curry was $3 extra and comes on the side. The set itself comes with miso soup and cabbage salad with a sesame dressing (you can sub it with potato salad). The salad is unlimited refills but the potato salad is not. The dressing needed salt so after adding some of the matcha salt, it was perfect. The curry was solid. The chicken thigh was super crispy and moist, it was the best cut of meat at the table (even among the premium tonkatsu). Would def get that again!! The set comes with 2 sauces, a standard sweet ish katsu sauce with a sliver of wasabi (?) that was perfect when mixed and yum yum sauce. - pork katsu don: the rice was great underneath. I was surprised when I came here on a whim and saw it had changed from the ramen place I visited a while back! Once I wrapped my brain around the different menu, I decided in the chicken breast katsu combo with a little salad and miso soup. The chicken was crisp and juicy with the panko breading and rice and egg. Could have used more flavor so I added chili oil which was the right decision. Very impressive! I've recently been disappointed by a few katsu places in the area, so I didn't have much expectations for this place. But this place was surprising. Ordered the premium tonkatsu combo and the chicken thigh don. Tonkatsu was more fatty and it did get a bit oily at the end as it cooled down, but first bite when it was hot was heavenly. Chicken thigh don was delicious! The rice especially was my favorite part but the chicken thigh was also so soft I forgot it was chicken as I was eating it. Service was great. All the waiters were so friendly and so quick! Space was pretty large but it filled up very quickly probably since it was Saturday night. We'll be visiting again as I think this is one of the best katsu places we've visited in the area. read more

I came here with friends and well, it wasn't bad. Kanpeki took the place of another ramen restaurant and I think the difference was noticeable enough that it's a nice refreshing change. I wasn't a big fan of the previous ramen spot, so I welcomed the change here. The food was good and the service was good. I got the takoyaki as an appetizer, and sadly I ate my main so quick I forgot to take a picture. But, I ordered the cheese Katsu combo. They were both great, it came with a simplistic salad which was refreshing. Overall, definitely recommend to come and get a Katsu dish, or if you want ramen I think thats a route you can explore as well. Located in the Medlock Plaza off Pleasant Hill (State Bridge) and Medlock Bridge Rd across the way from the Starbucks, its this place that I discovered while perusing social media. Most of the tonkatsu places are Korean so for this place to be authentically Japanese style is a rather breath of fresh air. So upon entering in, it's a moderately sized, ambiently lit, with room for roughly 90-110 people. Yet it's not cramp where you're not on top of each other which made for a pleasant experience to sit at even if the bench section was wood. It's like eating at a pew. It's also clean as it seems like it just opened. The food itself is another level. I ordered the premium tonkatsu which in my opinion is pretty fatty and then the deep fried panko adds to the overall greasiness. This will have the capacity to fatigue the pallette. Luckily they do serve some pickles which brings the acidity that cuts the fattiness to the meat which makes it palatable. To be honest, I didn't enjoy the premium as much as I thought I would so I'll have to try their basic tonkatsu. I do appreciate their rice, miso soup, the cabbage salad as it adds different textures to the entree. The miso soup I thoroughly enjoyed as it had a deep miso flavor but wasn't overpowering. The cabbage salad was a mayo based but it looked like it has black pepper mixed into it. I will say that the tonkatsu sauce is unlike the one you get at the store. Bulldog Tonkatsu sauce is my go to but this one here at Kanpei is radically different than the sweet tangy flavor. There is a smoky depth to it that I can't put my finger on but it accentuated the panko coated meat. Between the greasy oil of the fried panko and the smoky flavor of the tonkatsu adds a depth to the dish which I found very different. The other sauce had a very ginger/garlic bite to it that again cut through the greasiness of the fried panko and especially the fattiness of the premium meat. The premium tonkatsu combo sits at a pricey $25 a plate plus tip and tax makes for a pricey dinner especially when the premium pork cutlet as fatty and not as tender as you'd think. Either way... it's worth coming here for an authentic appeal to Japanese style tonkatsu compared the Korean counterpart and don't get me wrong, I love how Koreans do tonkatsu but the Japanese version (the OG version) is thicker, crunchier, and leans heavier on the actual meat than the size of the meat (which is how Koreans do it). Plus the tonkatsu sauce here isn't sweet which is how Koreans also do it and while it is different, Kanpei's direction is more authentic to it's root. read more

This tonkatsu place has been open a few months and while the service was excellent and the restaurant looking extremely clean, I'm still on the fence about the appetizers and entrees we ordered. We ordered the chicken karaage and fries, and I was a bit disappointed with the fries. They didn't have that crisp crunch you expect from a Japanese restaurant. The karaage was good but didn't come with enough of the sauce. We ordered the tonkatsu entree (not the combo) and the premium tonkatsu entree (not the combo), but did order a bowl of rice. The premium tonkatsu was a little more fatty, and while I feel it did taste better than the regular tonkatsu, I'm not sure it was worth the premium charge of $6-7 more. If you ask for the entree without the combo, it's $5 less. Honestly, I feel the prices are a bit high for what we received. While the taste of the food was generally well above average, I can't help but feel a little shorted on the value we received. Willing to try this place again though. 3.5 stars read more

I grew up in Japan and my mother is Japanese. I know good Tonkatsu and this was so authentic. We used to drive from Tokyo to Kawasaki to eat Tonkatsu and I was taken back to Japan from eating here. This is a new tonkatsu place that replaced rakken ramen. The first impression of this place was that it was clean and the server was really nice. We ordered the appetizer wings which had a teriyaki and black pepper sauce. This was just okay. Nothing special. I decided to order the premium tonkatsu because why not, and I also tried the chicken katsu. Guess which one was better? The chicken katsu. It was perfectly crispy and juicy on the inside. On the other hand, the premium tonkatsu wasn't that great. It had a strong porky smell to it, so I asked an older gentleman who seemed to be the owner or manager for some ginger to balance the taste of the strong pork smell - iykyk, but he said they didn't carry any. I didn't want to wait on another order of something else so I just ate it. I think kisoya still has better tonkatsu because of how porky this one was. This is a new spot for katsu lovers! It's Japanese-owned and honestly the closest I've had to the katsu I tried in Japan. We tried a little bit of everything -- takoyaki, cucumber salad, avocado salad, wings, and a bunch of katsu dishes like curry, cheese katsu, fish katsu don, and shrimp katsu don. This place used to be a Ramen franchise, but the owners completely changed the restaurant into a Japanese Tonkatsu place instead. We actually been to both and enjoyed this concept and food a lot better. It was very clean and still looked very new. They have been open since February 2025. The service was superb! The staff waited on us right away and were very friendly and accommodating. The food was really good. We loved the complementary chili oil that they had at the table and Matcha salt, it was different and added a nice touch to the seasoning. The Tonkatsu was better than most places we've had. It stayed Crispy and the meat still remained moist and not dry. Didn't taste oily at all. It helps that they place the fried meat on a rack while serving to keep it crispy and not oily. I like how you can order your meal and it comes in a combo. Very fulfilling portion. You can add more rice for $.50 or extra side items to share. The ground pork was a little dry to me but when you add the garlic chili and made it taste a lot better. Miso soup was also very tasty, it had more substance than other Japanese restaurants.
