This sushi spot is nestled in a strip of other business, but deserves it's OWN standalone location! I've had sushi from many establishments. Yet, there is something special about Flying Roll. Anything from it's cozy, quiet atmosphere to the flavor-forward rolls, I'd go so far as to say, there's nothing that would disappoint. We dined on Shumai and Rangoon with our hot green tea. The rolls arrived in very good time following - The Triple X, Lobster Love and Snow Mountain rolls. The Shumai was very tasty, but the Rangoon had with more crab than cream cheese - a first, much to our pleasure. For the rolls, each was enough for one person. The standout was the Lobster Lover, followed very closely by the Triple X. The snow mountain roll was a bit heavy with the tempura flakes ( the Snow? ) but decent overall. Recapping, the service, flavors and vibe all warrant future visits for certain, if for no other reason than to try their other offerings, which are plentiful! I went to flying roll yesterday. It is one of my favorite sushi spots in Duluth. The food is ALWAYS fresh and on point. The service is always spot on as well. I love the ambiance. Perfect lunch spot for reliable sushi and bento combos! Their roll and bento specials are a great deal and hit the spot every time. The ginger salad is crisp and refreshing with one of my favorite addictive dressings. Salmon teriyaki is well cooked and flavored, and you can't go wrong with their veggie and shrimp tempura that comes with the box combo. Our food took a minute to arrive but everything was delicious and our servers were kind and accommodating. Flying roll is a great spot for sushi either tons of options. Out of everything I've tried here, the one I liked most is the inari roll. It's a unique vegetarian sushi and tastes great with soy sauce, spicy mayo, and eel sauce. The green tea here is also great and there are tons of options like fried rice if you aren't in the mood for sushi. The food comes out relatively fast and everyone was very helpful. How this place have 4.5 stars is beyond me. The food is painfully obvious that it's low quality. The best thing in their sushi was the seaweed wrap. Everything has cucumber and fake crab meat. Had to return the volcano roll as it was drowning in sauce and was just inedible and had fake crab meat even after I asked to not have it. Beef yakisoba weren't very good as well . Short way to sum it up: everything we ate here tasted like American mall food quality at $40 (one beef yakisoba, one black and white roll, and one regular salmon roll - so NOT worth it). Sigh* We were better off eating at the food court inside Hmart. The server was very sweet though, and the restaurant looked clean, so 2 stars, but I really can't give it more than that. Went here for the first time, and was immediately greeted with friendly service. The restaurant was cozy, and the decorations were pretty. We were even given a ballon, which the family enjoyed playing with. The food was incredible, and you could tell it was fresh because of the smell and sound of the kitchen. The soup, salad, teriyaki chicken, rice, and vegetables were so flavorful and filling. This place is cozy and yummy! Presentation of food is always lovely. The Pink Lady roll was delicious and the tempura appetizer was the right size to split between two people. The Fuji Volcano roll was pretty good but also a bit overwhelming- there was too much of the sauce on top. Can't remember if mayo is listed in the ingredients, but there was something in the sauce that made it overwhelming - I ended up scraping some off of my last couple pieces. We have flirted with other sushi restaurants, but always seem to find our way back to Flying Roll. One of the things I enjoy most is the cute, intimate atmosphere of the booth seating. We always end up in a booth, and it feels private. The restaurant is filled with color and ambient light, which makes for a funky and comfortable space. They write the specials on the backs of the booth seats, which is a fun way to learn about their unique offerings. We have always had great and attentive service. And we haven't ordered a dish that we didn't like. We are particular fans of the various rolls that they offer and almost always try one of their specials. Prices are reasonable. read more

They have curtains in each booth so you can enjoy privacy. This place is well decorated! You can definitely tell from the ambience that's giving off that you can almost feel like you were in Japan itself lots of random, colorful, beautiful decor lines the entire restaurant and it's actually not overbearing at all. OK so I already know that pricewise this place is not the best but they do offer a very extensive menu and what I sampled was not bad so, if you're looking for a place that can give you many different combinations of rolls and also offer some authentic Japanese side dishes this might be the place for you. I definitely say that I was disappointed by their miso soup because it looks like chicken broth with mushrooms in it. I can here a few weeks ago after trying to kill some time on this side of town. I love the feel of the place, but didn't particular care for the smell when I first walked in. I was their first customer and had a seat in one of their booths. The first thing I noticed was the head of the booth with all of their "Best 3 Flying Roll" items which I thought was unique and extremely helpful. I ordered the spring roll for my appetizer and a shrimp tempura and avocado roll. My spring rolls came out a little cold in the center, so those of course were sent back. The waitress was good about getting me another ordered fairly quickly. My rolls were good, but not a place I'd place on the "some of my favorite sushi spots" list, but I'm glad that I can say I've tried it. read more

We finally back for and after a long time. We were greeted immediately and seated in one of the booths. We ordered a beef teriyaki bento box, a salmon teriyaki bento box, and a Genghis Khan roll. Each bento box came with a bowl of mushroom soup. You can choose either fried or steamed rice. Be aware that each portion of steamed rice had some black rice in it - don't worry. Each bento box has 4 pcs Cali rolls with ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce, teriyaki meats with stir-fried veggies, 3 pcs tempura (shrimp, squash, onion), and salad. Bento box is $11.99. Definitely recommend this. The Genghis Khan roll (what a catchy name) is classic roll topped with teriyaki chickens, tempura flakes, and hot sauce. It was very messy but delicious . Roll is $13.49.
