I have to recommend the chicken katsu bento box lunch special! I came here around 1:00 pm (moderately busy time), and was given great service and a delicious filling meal. The interior of the restaurant is kinda funky and chaotic but also really cool and uniquely designed. The bento was $11.99, and came with a warm soup, rice, 4pc California roll, salad, tempura (veggies and shrimp), stir-fried veggies, and chicken katsu. I definitely could've shared with someone else, so I'd say the portion sizes for the price was pretty reasonable. Service is pretty quick as well. My favorite part was definitely the chicken katsu and shrimp tempura, so I'll definitely give those a try if I come again. One of my New Years resolution is to write more Yelp reviews and since my family and I had a great experience tonight at Flying Roll, I thought it would be a good time to get started. We came here for dinner at around 8:20pm, which is a bit later than I usually like to especially since they said they closed at 9pm when I called earlier (I know, I know, I hate being that person, but Flying Roll was one of the few places to to me that was still open on New Years );) I felt worse when we walked in the restaurant and seemed to have been the only people eating at that hour however, we were immediately greeted very warmly by the hostess who seemed happy to see us and sit us down. The restaurant itself is very cute and warmly decorated; specials were handwritten on chalkboards, black and white curtains spilled down on each sides of the booths, Christmas lights strung around the kitchen area, pictures of Japan/Japanese pictures covered the walls -- it was just a very comfortable environment to be. We ordered just a couple things, Spam musubi to start, Donkatsu for the brother, and a Sushi tempera platter to be shared between me and my momma. The appetizer came with two things of musubi both cut in half, making it easier for the three of us to eat. Donkatsu (dinner portion) came with a clear broth soup sprinkled with a few slices of mushrooms, salad with ginger dressing, a variety of veggies, fried rice, and two big cuts of fried pork. My brother was sooo excited to devour in all the fried and crunchy goodness. I just want to add, Flying Roll's presentation for everything is so nice. The sushi platter came some spinning wheel apparatus which was cool in case one was concerned of having to reach over all the food; instead you'd just have your food come to you in one swift turn. The platter came with a little bit of everything including: veggie tempera, niguri, sashimi, and a tuna sandwich. It doesn't sound like much, but it was the perfect amount to be shared between two people (or maybe a super hungry one). The hostess came back to let us know that the kitchen was closing soon (around 9pm) and asked if there was anything else we wanted, we didn't order anymore, but I think even if we did, the workers wouldn't have been unnerved (they were so nice). My brother kept saying how his friends were jealous that he was able to eat such good food, my mom loved how fresh the fish was, the workers there were all sweet and attentive, so all in all it was a very good meal and a good start to the new year. We visited on a Friday night, just two of us. It was so busy that we waited about and hour and a half for our meal! We ordered edamame (good), spring rolls (great), Fuji Volcano (great), Red Rose (the best--wish we'd gotten two of these), Oh My Flying (good), Double Shrimp (meh, could have subbed this one out), and Escolar Sashimi (pretty good, but was so cold it was almost frozen). The lady that took my order was really nice. The food, not so much. The roll looked like it had been thrown into the container. Or the container was dropped before being given to me. As for the taste... The fish was hard. The rice was hard. The filling was unappetizing. I am really annoyed that I spent $15.24 plus tip for this sloppy mess. There were three other rolls that was ordered, but I don't remember exactly which was which: spicy tuna, eel, and something I can't remember to save my life. Overall the sushi was aesthetically appealing and tasted good. Some choices had more flavor than others. I would definitely come by and re-do this experience. Next I ordered the Sushi Platter and it was surprisingly very fresh and had a good variety. I had Tuna, Salmon, White Tuna, and Albacore Sashimi. DISAPPOINTED! This has been my go to sushi place for a while whenever I am in Duluth. I decided to get take out tonight and it was LOW QUALITY TO PUT IT MILDLY. Soggy spring rolls and sloppy veg tempura sushi. The sushi is not even "tempura sushi" - which is sushi with fried tempura on the inside. The entire roll is deep fried. Its absolutely disgusting. Flying Roll has been my favorite restaurant for the past couple of years. Not only is the food amazing, but so is the staff. I used to work a little less than 15 minutes from here and would go a couple of times a week. The owner is so sweet that he would give me a free meal every month since I would order from here almost every day. I have not had even one bad experience here. It's a relatively small restaurant but feels welcoming and cozy. Everything that I have ordered here has been consistently amazing (I didn't notice a huge difference when Sunny left, but it could be because I've only ordered a few different items from the menu). So far, I have had the lunch chicken teriyaki bento box, Yaki Udon, Cloud 9 Roll, & Udon and roll lunch Combo and I have thoroughly enjoyed everything. I would say that the rolls are a bit small for the price compared to other restaurants that I have been to. My favorite is the bento box that they have for lunch ($8.99). I have tried bento boxes from other restaurants but I always end up wishing I had gone to Flying Roll instead. For me, it's the right amount of food. (Note: I've only been here during lunch time. I can't comment on how the portion sizes are for dinner and if it's reasonable for the price.) There are days when it's super busy at lunch time. Since I used to only order to-go, for me this wasn't an issue but I would say that on those days, the parking was pretty bad. The nearby establishments have reserved parking so you have to go even further to get a spot. I would suggest calling ahead of time if you want to avoid this. I came here based on yelp reviews and the fact that my best friend loved sushi. We are celebrating his birthday today, he would've been 33 years old today. The health score here is a 95. Customer service was great. This place is cozy, small and the decor is magical. The sushi chef is in sight from the dining room. They feature pictures, very colorful accurate pictures of what the rolls look like. The bathrooms were spotless. Our sushi was perfect. Out hot saki was stout!!! My Husband's udon broth was so flavorful, lots of umami. The broth, our teriyaki chicken, even the soup and salad were all crafted with love, I tasted the love. Came here on a Monday night at 7:30. We were a bit surprised that we were the only people in the establishment, seeing as how it's rated so high! But everything was absolutely amazing here. I was surprised to see that they had spam musabi on the menu! We order that and shrimp tempura (love the batter they used!) as our appetizers. We ordered a shrimp tempura roll, the pursuit of happiness, crazy 8 and the red velvet. While I was waiting one of the servers came up to me and asked, "what do you want?" I said, "I'm waiting for a table". She just nodded and walked away. It was strange! I came around 5:30 and it wasn't busy. Environment was nice and cozy. We had the Shrimp tempura as an appetizer. Udon for the kids and wife and I had the Sushi deluxe and spider roll. Service was good nothing to complain about. Food came out as normal. Portions were a bit small especially the spider roll. Ive order else where and the really give you a nice sized crab. Here I was a bit disappointed. For $11.99 didn't think it was worth it. Udon was good. Soup was nice with lots of veggies. Could use more noodles though. Sushi deluxe had a nice presentation. Atlanta needs more of these... closer to the city! I've had so much trouble finding this type of spot inside the perimeter. This is a small sushi spot in a strip mall. The staff we interacted with were Chinese and Korean (rather than Japanese), but not a problem. They were friendly, although the waitress was not particularly knowledgeable about sushi or sake. We ordered the lower-priced cold sake, which was VERY sweet. They brought the bottle and two glass shot glasses. They might consider getting sake containers and cups. We also ordered 6 pieces of nigiri, seaweed salad, and 4 rolls. The prices were fairly reasonable and the rolls were tasty. They had two large lists of rolls and lots of variety (both raw and cooked), which is awesome. We really liked the roll with sliced jalapeno on top. The rolls did not have too much rice and the fish was fresh, which made for good nigiri. They were generous with ginger and spicy mayo. This is a great go-to sushi spot or place for a weeknight date. It doesn't compare to spots in great sushi cities, but Atlanta unfortunately isn't one of those cities. I will absolutely be back to satisfy my sushi cravings in the future. The best part of this place is the location. I work less than 5 minutes away, so its great for getting a quick lunch. The waitresses are friendly. The restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere.
