This spot is definitely authentic. It is owned by a Japanese couple and they are the only 2 working there. So even though there were only 2 tables, there was quite a long wait for the food. I would rate it a 3 stars, but I value authenticity and fish quality so I bumped it up to 4. This is a small restaurant in a plaza. There's only a few tables and it's reservation only. The prices are quite high for such a humble place. But I understand it as it's just 2 staff and few tables. I like the sushi sets that come with rolls and nigiri. I just have a hard time with comparison because I did go to Japan earlier this year and had great sushi for incredibly cheap prices. I did enjoy the sushi here. But it's just hard for me to recommend it highly because there are other sushi spots I like more and I have experienced sushi in Japan recently. The fish is good quality and I love to support small family owned businesses. This spot is exactly that. So if you are looking for that, then make a reservation here and try it for yourself. I read through very positive reviews of this Japanese restaurant online and was determined to try it. As other reviewers suggested, we called ahead of time, arrived on time, and were seated right away. The restaurant is run by an elderly Japanese couple and offers a traditional menu- so expect that style of service. The assorted tempura was decent and the nigiri set was good. But the whole restaurant experience was off. It was incredibly hot and stuffy with no AC running. It was also eerily quiet as we were the only guests with no background music playing in the small venue, so it wasn't comfortable to chat over dinner. Overall, the sushi was decent, but I would recommend other sushi spots in the area instead. But if I ever do go back, I would be eyeing the chirashi. read more

My husband and I tried Tokyo Shokudo as our date night and we were so happy we did! The restaurant is reservation only because the staff is only two people--a husband and wife who are very dedicated to their craft. I often look for Japanese-owned Japanese restaurants and it's tough to find one, this is the real deal. The wife was so pleasant and charming while taking our order, the restaurant was recently cleaned (and still smelled somewhat of cleanser, which didn't bother me but may bother some). The food was prepared quickly when we ordered and they served it accordingly. My Chirashi was great, quality cuts of fish over a nicely seasoned bed of rice. The skewers we ordered were delicious and I highly recommend the pork with the squeeze of lemon. My husband ordered rolls but, I wouldn't get those again--they were standard fare. Go with something more adventurous, and don't be like my husband. :) I will definitely return on a night when we're able to enjoy some hot sake! read more

Reservations Only. We went on a Sunday night. It was just an old Japanese couple working so service was a little slow. We were one of 3 tables and ordered the $7 fried oysters, $23 10 piece sushi dinner, the $30 premium 10 piece sushi dinner, and $22 beef bento box. My bf ordered a beer too. All the meals were great value. Quality was great overall but I've had better raw salmon. They put wasabi on the nigiri too. My sister and I weren't that hungry so we had leftovers to take home. I'm all for crazy extravagant fusion or hip sushi every now and then but honestly fresh fish just hits the spot. This place is very small with limited seating. I've only ordered pickup and to go. They are only allowing reservations and take out currently. This is a small restaurant with 4 social distancing tables. They even have plexiglass dividing the tables. We were greeted and handed dinner menus and also a sushi menu. We ordered a variety of everything from the menu including a sushi box, rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, shiitake skewers and salmon dinner. There's only one sushi chef and one server, so it did take a while for our food to come out. The dinners came with miso soup and house salad. The soup was piping hot and flavorful. The salad portion was small, but greens were fresh and the ginger dressing was good! The sushi and rolls were delicious. The salmon was also wonderful. A hidden gem, small mom and pop store with extremely high quality sushi for the price. We got a matsu dinner set (pine set) of nigiri and 1 tuna roll for $35. The pieces were huge and every piece was fresh and delicious. We also got some really premium pieces, guess we got lucky! We also got the fried chicken and octopus wasabi apps. The fried chicken was ok, the octopus looked like snot but was actually really crunchy and good so give it a try, don't be put off by the look. Apparently the sushi chef buys whole tunas and breaks them down himself, either way all their tuna nigiris and rolls were really good. There's only the two owners working so service is a little slow but we finished dinner in an hour so not that slow. Not only is it highly affordable, but the care put into every plate, and the insane portion sizes will really take you back to a time that you forgot existed. I've been to several Japanese/sushi restaurants that cater to affluent folks and boast Michelin stars, but the way you get treated by the two people who run this place, it just doesn't compare. They remember your orders and serve you only their best fish. Right now, they are reservation and take out only. I have to wonder about some of the reviews on here. Sandy S.T. says she stopped in for lunch? They are NEVER open for lunch and only take reservations, so anyone saying they "stopped" in for lunch is lying. They are definitely not a typical restaurant in America and are not trying to be. They do not take online reservations, do not have a website, etc. They are an authentic older Japanese family restaurant who only serves what they can handle and nothing more. If you want spontaneous or fast go somewhere else. I understand they will come across as odd to most and maybe a little rude. I doubt they will ever read these comments. They appear to be very conscientious and proud of their food preparation so I am skeptical of some of the comments on poor quality fish or worms, But I guess even a good place can have a bad day. The vast majority of people seem to have the experience we have had, which is a very meticulous and careful, but not overly customer service oriented experience. Tokyo Shokudo gets 3 out of 5 Yelp stars from me ("A-OK"). This is a small, humble mom and pop sushi restaurant. There's not much to this place. It's located in one of many strip malls along Peachtree Industrial Blvd near Pleasant Hill Rd, close to Gwinnett Medical Center and restaurants like Duluth Diner and Oh! My Samgyupsal (Korean BBQ). This is a casual, authentic joint with a sushi bar and tables (no booths). I like that they play Japanese pop music. We visited for dinner where appetizers include interesting items like soft shell crab karaage (fried soft shell crab, $10), harumaki (Japanese spring rolls, $3.75-4.75), eringi mushroom butter yaki with bacon (grilled king oyster mushroom with a butter sauce, $5), hamachi kama (grilled yellowtail collar, $12), hotaru ika okizuke (marinated baby squid, $5.25), ika natto (squid with traditional Japanese fermented soybeans, $6.25), and sushi tataki, yamakake (ground taro), and carpaccio ($9.75-15). Other foods offered include tempura ($6.50-9.25), kushiyaki (two skewers, pork belly, chicken gizzards, shrimp & scallop, etc. for $3.25-7.50), assorted sashimi ($20-30), assorted nigiri ($18-30), chirashi (assorted sashimi over rice, $18-25), and bento boxes ($21-23). Bento boxes are essentially Japanese combo plates with a variety of selections. Here, that means stuff like miso soup, salad, rice, teriyaki, grilled fish, tempura, and veggies. Outside of the regular menu, they have specials such as ramen and udon noodles. Our group ordered a nice assortment of items including chirashi bowls, nigiri platters, bento boxes, rolls, and ramen and udon noodle soups. Presentation-wise, everything looked great. I went with the "Matsu" (pine tree) sushi dinner for $30. This is a chef's choice sushi dinner. It comes with miso soup and a salad. I told the server about my allergies (crustaceans) and was given a circular wooden sushi plate of tekka maki (tuna roll, 6 pieces) and 10 pieces of nigiri: maguro (bluefin tuna), hirame (flounder), sake (salmon), ika (squid), kampachi (amberjack), ahi (yellowfin tuna), ikura (salmon roe), uni (sea urchin), toro (fatty tuna belly), hamachi (yellowtail). Overall, I enjoyed the sushi. However, some slices of fish weren't as fresh and flavorful as I was hoping they'd be given some of the rave reviews this place has gotten over the years. I was expecting better quality, but it may have just been the night I went. The uni was disappointing. I love buttery, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth uni, but this was not that. Instead, it was thick, almost pasty, and did not taste very good. The toro was OK; very rich. The other pieces were fine and I'd order them again. I also tried the ramen. It was good. The best thing about it was that it wasn't too salty. The soup came with noodles, a couple slices of chashu (braised pork belly), half a soft-boiled egg, seaweed, wood ear fungus, seaweed, beni shoga (red pickled ginger), and chopped green onion. I think the broth was tonkotsu (pork-based) because of its full, savory flavor and cloudy off-white/brown color. Service was great. I'll lead with the fact that, as a guy with a bigger appetite, I'm not typically interested in sushi because it can be expensive and leave me feeling hungry but this place. DANG. I ordered 3 rolls because they were so cheap and they're about 2-3 pieces more than a usual sushi roll. I'm busting at the seams right now. I'm so full and I only spent $30. The quality of the fish here seems really great so this feels like a place I could explore with sushi, something I haven't done in the past because of the price point. I would say most of the items on the menu are raw and fresh, so if you are more into the raw stuff, this would be for you. My boyfriend loves the raw assortment of seafood he ordered and would rank them above Sushi Mito and Sushi & Co. My favorite were the Spicy Tuna Roll, tofu, and temporas. We also ordered skewers, but they were a little too tough for me. Most of the sushi rolls on the menu have cream cheese in there, which I don't preferred. Family dinner on a Tuesday night, we were the only ones there. However, this did not take away from the quality of the sashimi omakase. Ignore the rolls and maybe the nigiri too and go straight for the sashimi omakase. The platter came with all the best fishes and other seafood the chef keeps behind the counter. The reason I say skip the rolls and nigiri is the fact this restaurant only has omakase for sashimi. I'm from Snellville and my favorite sushi place was sold due to the owner retiring; then I was trying to look for an authentic Japanese Sushi Restaurant and I found Tokyo Shokudo. I went by the reviews and they did not disappoint. I was very impressed about the quality of the sushi; you have earned a customer. Reservation strongly recommended (You have to call more that once to get somebody on the phone) The owners are a mom and pop so please be patience as they are an elder couple taking care of the entire restaurant, but the food is worth waiting. Always driven past this place pre-Pandemic and have been stalking the Yelp site to check the legitness; finally tried it last week and I was dead on right - it's a Japanese-ran restaurant with some quality sushi work backing that you seldom find in this region. Had the deluxe chirashi don, "okay" portion of fish facing the hyper-inflation these days; shari (the rice) was as thin as a fobby Asian ass and didn't fill up nothing making you crave more of that sweet carbos, but tolerable for a light dinner option when you are on a diet (I am not). Had to reason with myself knowing that every price is going up and why not the rice, so why not. Sweet, nice mama-san with a thick Japanglish accent was one-star plus. One of my favorite sushi place ever! I really love their sashimi and their service. Although the food come out slow but they taste really good and worth for the wait. Their fish are fresh and you can tell just by that fish head and shrimp heads they put as a decoration. Only sushi place with fresh food will put the head of a seafood on their plate and serve to customer. The owner also like to talk about the uni they use and the difference between the taste of each uni they have. I'm always down for trying new sushi restaurants in and around Atlanta. Tokyo Shokudo has been on my radar for a while, but for some reason I haven't been by. We were driving to Duluth for some tasty Korean BBQ, but since we weren't very hungry, we switched tactics to something lighter - sushi! It's always a relief when your server's English has a foreign accent. They're definitely Japanese (at least, our server was). I think she was working the entire restaurant, as I saw no other server in sight. There weren't very many tables to serve, though, as seating is limited, but there also wasn't really a wait, either. Service was a little slow, but that was most likely due to the one server... My friends and I decided to split a small bottle of cold sake. It came out in the bottle, but our server poured it into a really cool carafe, which separated the ice from the alcohol. I also ordered a small portion Chirashi don (plum) with scallop nigiri. The Chirashi wasn't bad. I've seen better displays but this was definitely a good start. It was a rare sight to see uni on the lower level Chirashi. The uni was a little fishy but also better than other uni that I have experienced. The scallop was pretty sweet, which was indicative of its freshness! Overall, Tokyo Shokudo isn't a bad spot at all. I've had much better in Atlanta, but there is definitely much worse. If I were craving sushi again while in the Duluth area, I may have to stop by again, although with Sushi House Hayakawa only a brief drive away, it would be hard to say no to that. With the slightly lower prices at Tokyo Shokudo, that may be the only advantage it has over Hayakawa. read more

I came here with my family because of the yelp review we saw. It looked really good! It's located in a shopping center. It's small, but homey on the inside. There were only two workers, which I believe are husband and wife. They were very sweet. Their service was amazing! I admit, it was a little warm for my liking, but it was still bearable. We came during lunch ours and they honestly have great prices for their lunch special!! Was really impressed. For some reason, I wanted ramen. So I ordered their tonkatsu ramen. It was ohkays, but I honestly was disappointed when I only received one piece of meat with all the noodles I had. Their noodles weren't the noodles I was hoping for. The noodles were from an instant packet. I've had those noodles at home. But for the price I paid, I guess I really can't complain too much. We did order a volcano roll. That I actually liked! It came way later than our entrees, so I didn't get to picture it. The food came out quick overall though. If you need somewhere cheap and quick, this is the place for that. Hasn't been super packed the last two times I've been, so I'm definitely not complaining. I like small restaurants. We went in an wanted some quick sushi, so me and the wife ordered some Spicy Tuna Rolls, another specialty roll and our classic Volcano roll. WOW! Hands down best raw tuna I have had in my life. I ordered the moon nigiri plate, and every piece of nigiri was delicious! Clean, bright flavor in every piece of fish.
